Author's Note: This is the last chapter of the month. I am going to take an extended break from the story to work on my original Danish novels, in hopes of making them publishable to the near future. I hope you guys enjoy this chapter. And yes, Bright will finally learn the truth of why he was adopted (in the next chapter).
Guest: Here's the new chapter. Enjoy!
Chapter 19: Dragon Tales
While Bright was telling the Berkians of his story, Flashwing was beginning to tell the dragons how he found his adoptive son. "And while the raid was happening around me, I stumbled upon what humans called a cradle, and in it was Bright, small and only a newborn then."
Toothless listened intently to Flashwing's story. No dragon said a word while the Light Fury continued.
"And while I was near the newborn hatchling, his mother appeared before me, telling to go away from her child. Of course, I didn't, and unfortunately scarred Bright's chin with my claw," continued Flashwing. "After I shouted at her, Bright understood me from every word I spoke."
"Was that strange?" asked Stormfly, the Deadly Nadder of Astrid's.
"At first, yes," Flashwing confirmed with a nod. "However, I knew that I couldn't let him be raised by those humans and, by my decision, took him away from his birth parents for protection."
Lightwing nuzzled his face with affection. "And it was a good thing you did," she cooed.
"What happened afterward?" Barf asked, one of the Hideous Zippleback's two heads.
"After I took Bright from his parents, I flew to Dragon Nest to keep him safe," Flashwing said. "And at first, the dragons of the Nest were skeptical of having a human living amongst us, but they soon accepted him as part of the nest while Alpha Scales came to the decision to let the boy stay."
Scales hummed in agreement. "Although it was strange for me to accept a human into our home, I let it aside as I knew the boy would be able to stop the war between human and dragon. All he needed was to learn Dragonese and Norse to be able to achieve such a feat."
The dragons murmured between themselves before Toothless asked, "And what of this Arne human? How did you let him in the Nest?"
Scales smiled. "I discovered that he meant us no harm, and that he was watching over Bright, and so I chose to let him stay and continue watching over the boy. Arne was from the human village which Flashwing was in. When he first arrived, the dragons were again skeptical of another human, but they let it aside if he meant no harm to us."
Toothless seemed satisfied with the answer.
Flashwing looked over to the humans, and saw how Bright was explaining his childhood with them and how he was captured by a man named Eret. The Berkians were all quiet and listened, deeply interested to hear his story.
"Looks like they're having fun over there," Luna pointed out.
"Yes," Flashwing agreed.
"So, Flashwing, what about the humans of that village?" Meatlug, the female Gronckle and Fishlegs's dragon, asked. "Why haven't they tried to search for their missing baby? Do they even know he is alive all this time?"
Flashwing closed his eyes, taking a deep breath before answering, "To be honest, Meatlug. I'm not even sure myself. I know for a fact they must be looking for him, but how can they find their child if they do not know where to begin?" he asked in return.
"Wouldn't it be wise to go to them and let them know their child is alive?" Meatlug asked.
Flashwing blinked. "I…haven't thought of that."
Meatlug smiled gently. "Imagine if they find out Bright is alive and well, they could still change their opinions of dragons—just like the Berkians did—and we will all live happily together."
Flashwing hummed, putting a claw on his chin in thought. "You do have a point, Meatlug. I myself haven't thought of taking him back to the village, if I am honest. All I wanted for him is to be happy and healthy while still under our care."
"Wouldn't he be like that if he found out his true heritage?" Meatlug asked.
Toothless nodded in agreement. "I agree. He shouldn't be left out where he is from. It would hurt him from the inside more. We noticed it earlier today. He was sad about someone he didn't know he had with him."
Flashwing blinked.
"We've been with him ever since he arrived here on Berk, that's why we're close enough to him and know how he feels," Toothless added quickly.
"I see," Flashwing hummed, closing his eyes for a moment. "Then when should I tell him?"
"Probably later," Toothless suggested. "If he knew it now, he would be restless and not be able to sleep during the night."
Flashwing agreed.
After they heard no more talking at the humans' table, the Vikings dispersed from the Great Hall and returned back to their homes, ready to continue the day with their routines.
Bright stretched his arms and stood with Hiccup and Stoick, who smiled at Bright.
"I thank you for telling us more about yourself, Bright," Stoick said. "Now we know a bit more of how you are able to do things like you do."
"It was my pleasure, chief," Bright said before he yawned. "Boy, after such a long explanation, I feel tired."
"Get some rest, then," Stoick suggested, placing a fatherly hand on his shoulder. "You should be ready for tomorrow's upcoming daily activity."
Bright agreed with Stoick, and he saw his adoptive parents and sister walk over to him. "All right, time for me to show you our residence in Berk, Mom, Dad."
Flashwing and Lightwing didn't blink, but smiled as they followed him out of the Great Hall and to a hill that was a little further from the Haddock residence. The building was built like all of the other houses, and it had its charms for its dragon-like head object above the door.
Bright went to the door and opened it, gesturing to his family inside. Luna went in first, followed by Lightwing, Flashwing and Scales.
"This seems like a home of comfort," Scales commented.
"It was built once the war ended," Bright explained. "Chief Stoick knew I needed my own residence, as I couldn't keep being within their own house. I was that at first, when Luna and I arrived here."
Lightwing noticed a dragon-sized bed as Luna took her spot on it, settling down. "Is it really that comfortable, dear?"
"Oh yes," Luna nodded. "Hiccup made this for me, and he also made one for Toothless at his house."
Lightwing hummed.
Bright began to cook some food in the pot at the small kitchen on the first floor while his family inspected his room on the second floor. Flashwing came down to his adoptive son, who was cooking some meat while keeping a basket of raw fish nearby.
"What's with the fish?" Flashwing asked.
"Those are for you four…I know you don't eat cooked food, so I decided to have this basket ready when you showed up," Bright replied, finishing the cooked meal.
Flashwing smiled. "You know us too well, son."
"I am your son, after all," Bright chuckled.
Flashwing's smile vanished, but Bright didn't notice when the boy sat at the table while Lightwing, Scales and Luna joined them downstairs. Once they began to eat, Flashwing looked at Bright for a moment, while Bright was done eating, he began to stand. "Bright, there's something you and I need to talk about. Come outside with me, please."
Bright blinked, then nodded and stood before going out with his adoptive father. Once they were outside the house, the starry night sky was seen overhead. The stars were out and shining brightly. "What is it you'd like to talk about, Dad?"
Flashwing took a deep breath, looking at his son's eyes, then said, "That's just it. I am not really your father."
