Chapter 4: The Fall

The two boys stopped circling each other and just stood there, not moving so much as a single muscle. Then, out of nowhere, Orys suddenly strafed towards Jon and brought his sword down on his head. Jon, surprised at the sudden attack, just barely managed to step back and block Orys' sword. But the prince gave him no time to think, he immediately started hacking and hammering at Jon, not giving him a moments rest and forcing him to go on the defensive. Jon kept stepping back and blocking the attacks, looking for an opening to strike. He found it when Orys reared his sword back to hit him from the side, Jon instantly parried his strike and went hit him with a jab. Orys clutched his side out of pain from being hit, he feinted slashing at Jon from the right. Jon fell for it and lifted his sword to block, Orys dropped to one knee and spun around, hitting Jon's calf and forcing to knell. Orys quickly got back on his feet and pointed his sword Jon's neck, while Jon pointed his at Orys' thigh, right where the artery was. The two boys were both panting heavily, tired from their fight, which wasn't that long but still managed to exhaust them both. They both smiled at each other and started laughing. They drew away their blades and Orys helped Jon back up "Not bad. You're a pretty good fighter Orys." Jon Said. "Not so bad yourself Snow. For a bastard that is." Orys replied jokingly. "You're definitely better than Joffrey, that's for sure. Whenever we spar, it never lasts to long, on account of him being a horrid fighter, so it was nice to finally fight someone who can fight back." Orys said while gesturing to Joffrey, who had stomped off angrily half way through the conversation . "You're not to bad with a sword. Though there is room for improvement." Jon said. "yeah, if you think I'm good with a sword, you should see me with a hammer, a mace, or a spear." Orys said while catching his breath. "Who's knows? Maybe I will someday" Jon said, equally out of breath. "I'm going to go find my father. See if when it is we're going back to King's Landing." said Orys. After giving a slight bow and setting the sparring sword back on the rack, he walked away in search of the king. "He's an interesting lad, that's for sure" Said Ser Rodrik, as they watched the retreating form of the young prince. "That he is" said Robb "He seems like a good person, if a little strange" he continued. "he's definitely a good fighter. If he is that skilled with a sword, then I shudder to think how skilled he is with a hammer or a spear." Ser Rodrik said. "Let's hope we never have to find that out the hard way" Jon said with a slight bit of worry. Robb and Ser Rodrik both nodded in agreement. "I'm going to go too. It's been a while since I've talked to Bran, I'll go see what he's up to." Jon said while setting the sparring sword down and walking of to find his younger brother. Jon went to Bran's room, but he wasn't there. He looked in the Godswood, but struck out there too. Jon saw Maester Luwin and asked him "Maester Luwin, have you seen Bran? I can't seem to find him" "No, I haven't. But knowing the boy, he's probably out climbing something impossibly tall as always." the maester replied. Jon threw his hands in the air, having completely forgotten one of Bran's favorite pastimes, right next to riding and archery. He made his way to the First Keep, knowing that whenever Bran went climbing, he would climb the tallest structure he could possibly find. Jon was proven right when he saw the boy halfway up the tower from the stables. He made his way there as quickly as he could, he turned a corner and saw Bran at the very top. Jon was about to call for him to get down, when suddenly he saw Bran falling.

Jon froze in his tracks, his eyes widened and his heart skipped multiple beats. Time seemed to slow before him as he watched Bran fall. he snapped out of it when Bran hit the ground. "BRAN, NOOOO!" Jon screamed at the top of his lungs and to his brother so fast, he almost got whiplash. He kneeled down before Bran, his heart in his throat and his eyes on the verge of tears. Jon shook Bran a bit, hoping he would wake. When he didn't, Jon starting getting even more worried 'no no no, come on Bran, wake up' he thought panickily. He put two of his fingers against Bran's neck, searching for his pulse. He breathed a sigh of relief when he found Bran's heartbeat, but noticed that it was incredibly faint. He picked up as gently as he could and made his way to Maester Luwin's turret as fast as he could. "Hold on Bran, just hold on. Please" He said "GUARDS! MAESTER LUWIN! ANYBODY! HELP!" Jon yelled as he got to the courtyard. Robb and Ser Rodrik both looked at him confused, then they saw Bran unconscious in his arms and the confusion immediately turned in to worry and fear. "Jon, What's going on?! What happened to Bran?!" Robb asked, his face and voice covered in worry. Lord and Lady Stark had appeared as well, having heard the yelling. They both ran to see what was going on and their faces paled when they Bran. Lady Stark's face was a combination of worry for Bran and anger towards Jon. "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO MY SON?!" she screamed at Jon, already blaming him without even knowing what was going on. "Catelyn, calm down" Ned Stark said to his wife, trying to calm her down. "Jon, what happened?" Ned asked his son, visibly worried. Jon then explained what happened to everybody. How he went looking for Bran and saw him climbing a high tower, then saw him fall from the top and brought him here to get help. Once Jon had finished, Ned tenderly scooped Bran out of his arms and said "Jory, find Maester Luwin and tell him to come to Bran's room! NOW!" Lord Stark all but yelled at Jory Cassel, the captain of his house guard and Ser Rodrik's nephew. "At once my lord." Jory said, and bolted as fast as he could to find Maester Luwin. Lord Stark had started walking towards Bran's room, with everybody else in tow. On the way, they found Sansa, Arya, and Rickon who followed them and asked what happened. Robb quickly explained everything and Sansa and Arya both started crying when he was finished. Rickon looked worried but confused, being too young to fully understand the implications of such a fall. They all burst into Bran's room and Ned set him down gently on his bed. Lady Stark and Robb had gone to hugging and consoling Sansa and Arya while trying not to start crying themselves. Jory arrived with Maester Luwin in tow, who promptly went to examining Bran and doing everything he could to help him. All the while, Jon just stood there, frozen and unsure of what to do. The room quieted down around him, or at least the noise was no longer entering his ears. His mind seemed block out all the noise. His head started to sweat and his mouth became dry. The only thing his mind seemed to be able to focus on was Bran. Jon's head started spinning and his vision blurred. He backed up to a wall and slid down it until he was sitting on the floor. He put a hand on his brow, closed his eyes and started crying softly. Jon felt something nudge against him from both sides, he looked up to see Arya sitting to his right and Ghost, his white-furred, red-eyed direwolf to his left. He hugged Arya next to him and patted Ghost on his head. After what seemed like hours, Maester Luwin turned to the assembled group and sighed. Everyone's attention turned on him and they waited for his words. "Well, the good news is that Bran is alive" Everybody let out a sigh of relief. "But" the maester continued "He is in a coma, the fall hurt him badly" "When will he wake?" Lord Stark asked "I can not say for certain my lord." Maester Luwin answered "It could be days, weeks, months or even years. I will do everything I can to help him, but you might have to consider the possibilty that Bran might never wake." Ned put a hand on his mouth and sat down. "There is more my lord" Maester Luwin said. Ned's head jerked up quickly "More? What more could there possibly be?" he asked horrified. "Well, the fall badly damaged his spine spine and legs. Even if he were to wake up, we would be paralyzed from the waist down for the remainder of his days my lord." the maester said morosely. "You mean...the boy will never walk again?" Lord Stark asked tearfully "Yes, I am afraid so my lord" Luwin anwsered. That was the final straw. Ned starting crying and Catelyn began outright sobbing. Jon couldn't believe what he was hearing. Paralyzed? For the rest of his life? He'll be a cripple, never able to ride, climb or even shoot a bow ever again. the gods were cruel. And yet, it seemed Bran's life was in their hands. Only one thought ran through Jon's mind in that moment, 'Please wake up Bran. Please'.

And there we go! Bran has fallen and a question mark hangs on whether or not he will wake.
