Thank you so much for keeping up with my story, I am so glad about the support I get from you!
Now, what did you think about the name reveal?
As an information, this chapter kind of covers the episode "Who you really are", but from another perspective.
Disclaimer: I still only own Alexandra (and Janet).
Disclaimer 2: Yes, he calls a grown woman "girl". Yes, admittedly that is difficult and seems out of character for her to accept this power relationship. However, I imagine a kind of paternal energy here (in a very non-sexual, innocent way) and since everything else has changed so drastically for her, these established patterns are something that she wants to hold on to in this moment.
Chapter 27: Safe House
... Lawson... Xandra pondered for a moment. It sounded slightly familiar. Maybe. But not really.
What was she like? What was her real name? And why the fuck did you put in my file that she was Greek?
"I don't know what her name really was, I knew her as Janet. Janet Lawson. Obviously she used another name towards your father, this is what we put in your file and on everything else when we faked the birth certificate and all other documents. No clue where the Greek nationality came from. There must have been a mistake in communication, because you definitely look not Southern European, and neither did she. She looked quite young when I met her but she might have been centuries old, who knows, being Kree and all that. She was on the run with a baby, the father lost. Pretty, long hair, big puppy dog eyes. Snarky, even a bit mean maybe, and smart as a whip. A spitfire and she would have been utterly wasted on the man who raised you as a father, I tell you that."
But she just handed me over? To you? A kinda shady guy who could look smart but makes every effort to look like a homeless pirate?
"Don't get cheeky with me girl," he growled, "but no, she did not. It was kind of a... tricky situation she found herself in. And she always intended to pick you up when the situation got better, when it would be safe for the two of you. Well...She would likely have killed him, slowly, and me afterwards for letting you stay with that man. I liked her. And she loved you very very much. Her only aim was to protect you. So was mine, by the way. That's the only thing you really need to know."
Xandra swallowed.
So what now?
"Well, there has been some social media footage been going around. About an Asgardian. Lady Sif, you won't have met her, but maybe you have heard about her. This will keep at least a part of the team busy since they will have to deal with her for a time. I don't know what she wants, but Asgardians always cause trouble. Still, they will keep on searching for you. For several reasons. I am certain they consider you to be A danger and IN danger. Unfortunatedly, I don't have much information what they are up to at the moment, only a couple of people around the area who will keep their eyes open. Now, you should lay low here for a day or two, you might not feel like it but you need rest. Even alien bodies do. I hope you contacted your boyfriend?"
She rolled her eyes but nodded.
"Since you are here, you might as well run some calculations and codes. Might stop you from doing stupid shit."
Xandra nodded again, the plan sounded as good as any.
"There is a bedroom on the right. You can take that one and sleep, I'll wake you up when there is food."
Sleep sounded quite good, especially sleeping in a flat which she new would be protected. Very well protected. The mattress was cloudy soft and she giggled (well, up to the point where she realized she could not make a sound, that sobered her quickly). It still felt heavenly. Even more heavenly was the food eight hours later. It was frozen pizza that had been prepared in the microwave, not luxurious, and something she would have usually turned her nose up to. She had expensive taste after all. However, now, it was at least something warm and she wolfed it down in superspeed. Afterwards, they decided to switch so he could sleep, while Xandra started to run some calculations, apparently to be able to break into yet another server. Obviously shady, one could never know what her companion would use the information for, but she mostly trusted him.
An agent or whatever her companion had now (gangsters?) reported a bit later that members of the team had been seen around Chaves in Portugal. When he casually mentioned a small earthquake, Xandra looked up. That must have been Daisy, so apparently she was out and about. Fitz was likely still covering for her, but for how long would that work?
It's Skye
She wrote down. The older man seemed rather unaffected.
"Shit happens. Sucks for her. And for Coulson, he babies her so much."
You know that how?
"Met them together once or twice. That's enough to know."
Suddenly, a post from a portuguese nurse working in a local hospital popped up on the monitors, making them pause. It mentioned a break-in in a hospital and some problems with nitrogen some time ago. And, even more concerning, a man with blue skin. The responses were mostly negative with people questioning her sanity or calling her out for trying to prank them, but both outlaws looked a bit worried.
"Seems the Kree have become concerned. The question is whether this is an official order from Hala, or just a lone ranger on a mission. And whether they know how many transformed. And whether they know about your parentage and have been monitoring all the time, or whether this is just a coincidence, a lucky shot. If you are lucky they only know people transformed and do not know about your parents. If they ever get you, you are very likely dead. You are the result of a forbidden union, for once. Additionally your grandmother, a remarkable woman who wanted to bring peace, was seen as a traitor and killed. This should make your situation worse."
Wonderful
It could have been weird, discussing these topics as casually as the weather, but that was just the way the two of them were. A little bit like family, a little bit like friends, a little bit enemies, ready to rat each other out, and yet...
The calmness had come back and it almost felt like this was happening to someone else. As if everything was a movie. In a way it was, since she spent the afternoon doing some work and watching the screens, it was like watching a very very boring documentary or live-stream. They could not be sure about any timeline, but apparently the problems at the hospital had occured before the events in Chaves which had resulted in the earthquake. No more tremors had been noticed, which led to the question what had happened to Skye. Had she been locked up? Hurt? Or simply brought her powers under control? Not knowing it made Xandra more uncomfortable than she would like to admit. Slight traces of worry and fear for Skye who had been changed just as herself, for Fitz who had been protecting her, for Hunter who was just so incredibly stupid and reckless and for May broke through the calm ocean that ahd been her mind.
"You shifted," the man next to her remarked, "you seem more like the girl I know now. Less like a warrior made from steel. Though, to be honest, you always had parts of that in you I guess."
It scares me. This weird feeling that overcomes me, like I analyse everything and could pull a trigger on a friend. It is horrible. And freeing at the same time. That is why it is horrible.
She admitted.
"Girl, it should scare you, you are right. Your mind is basically giving you a free pass for full destruction if rational analysis deems it necessary. Like a great general - these are abilities you already had, but subdued by conscience and ethical thinking. Apparently you have now the ability to turn this off and simply rationalize. know you can do it, you have hardened all your life and you are ready to make these calls. You can survive that, you can carry that weight. But it will cost you, each and every time. Just now you are already torn, since you WANT to be good, to be helpful. It will only become worse. OR you can make it your strength, but this would require you to learn how to control your analytical powers and when to use your feelings."
You seem to know an awful lot about that
"You know I make the hard calls, do things many find unethically."
Xandra looked at him skeptically.
"Alright girl, I have done a lot of things that ARE unethical. And also ordered others to do them. So what I know is that it takes something from you, each and every time. Even if you know it has to be done. And even though you will not believe me, despite all this shit, I actually want you to be happy."
If she was quite honest, Xandra had not expected a pep talk from the former senior officer, but nevertheless smiled gratefully.
"That said, in comparison to Agent Skye, I don't think you are an immediate danegr to people around you," he continued almost business like.
Would you have got me out if I were?
"Probably. I trust Coulson, but there is something else - I have the feeling there is something going on inside of S.H.I.E.L.D: and team members could be involved. I have heard some reports on suspicious activities. In any case, to answer your question, you know that I would have got any potential danger out of the way of any potential overtaking. Meaning: Even if I was scared you were to explode, I would have gotten you out, since dealing with danger would be better than potentially let others have you as a potential weapon."
I see a lot of potential in here
Xandra rolled her eyes.
Do you want to send me back?
"Not yet, I would like to send you to The Retreat, a facility built by Banner. Fairly secure, but it has the risk of Coulson knowing about it and he might send Skye there as well. However, it might still be a good idea to do this since Skye's loyalties will be shaken at this point, giving you an in to gain information, especially about what is going on on the inside."
Sooooooooooooo... you want me to report?
"Of course I do. Though I have no illusions that you will only report what you think won't fire back. You are a smart one after all."
She smiled, accepting the compliment.
