Don't You Remember – Chapter 11

Zoey asked and talked about 'Dr. Mo' every day. She was driving Jane a little crazy. Jane found Maura fascinating and it seemed as though her daughter did as well. Jane thought she might need to set up a playdate for Maura and Zoey. She laughed at the thought of her daughter having a play date with her coworker.

"Mama, when are we going to see Dr. Mo again?" Zoey asked, she liked Dr. Mo and wanted to spend time with her again.

"I don't know baby, I see her every day at work but I'm not sure when you will get to see her." Jane saw the disappointed look on her little girl's face and added, "we will figure something out, okay?"

"Okay mama, I hope it will be soon." Jane didn't know if seeing Maura would help Zoey or make her infatuation with her worse.

"Matter of fact, I better get going or I will be late for work. Are you ready to go? I need to drop you off at nonna's." Jane informed Zoey.

"I'm ready mama." Zoey told her mother as she grabbed her backpack and jacket. They arrived at Angela's fifteen minutes later. Zoey didn't have to be at school until 9 AM while Jane had to be at work at 8 AM. Jane took Zoey to her nonna's every morning. If her mama was called into work, Angela would drive over to Jane's to watch Zoey.

Everything was fine until Angela had to leave suddenly as her older sister was involved in a car accident. Her sister's condition was listed as critical with a bleak outlook. The doctor was not sure if she would survive the accident.

Angela was beside herself so Frankie drove her to the hospital in Revere. Nothing else mattered to Angela except for her sister. She was worried that she would never be able to speak to her sister again. The thought scared her. She was happy that Frankie was there with her.

Later that afternoon, Jane realized she had a problem, her mother was picking Zoey up from her after school program. Jane and Frost had to follow a lead to locate and hopefully capture their main suspect in their current case. The informant that provided the lead was reliable and they feared if they didn't follow it up on the lead that afternoon, they may lose the suspect. They had waited all day for the late afternoon to arrive so that they could follow up on that particular lead. Now Jane didn't have anyone to pick up Zoey. Frankie was her backup and he was not available. Jane had not experienced this problem before. She would have gone to Korsak next but he was out of town.

Jane took a chance and asked Maura if she would be willing to pick up Zoey from school. Zoey loved Maura and she figured Zoey would be okay with Maura picking her up from school. Maura agreed without any hesitation. Jane called the preschool after school program and let them know that Maura would be picking Zoey up from school. They stated that she needed to fax over written authorization and after obtaining the fax number, Jane quickly sent a signed authorization letter.

Jane sent a text to Maura letting her know that her appointment was running late. The suspect was apparently running late for work and thus causing Jane to be late. Maura fed Zoey and then sent Jane a text.

Maura: Jane, why don't I keep Zoey overnight and then we don't have to worry about what time you are finished with your appointment.

Jane was reluctant at first but she knew how much Zoey loved her new BFF, Maura, and agreed. Zoey was eager to spend more time with Maura so how could she refuse her daughter's wishes. She loved that Zoey had made a connection with Maura. She also wondered why Maura sent text messages with complete sentences.

Jane: Thanks, Maur. Do u want to bring Z to work and then I can take her to preschool?

Maura: That sounds great. Could you please bring her a change of clothes for her?

Jane: Yes, thank you again Maur. I will call later before her bed time. I truly appreciate you looking after her.

Zoey had a great night with Maura and Tony. She and Tony had become fast friends as well. She was so excited and telling her mama all about her time with Maura. She had so much more to tell her mama, but she was running out of time. She wanted to tell her mama all about her new friend, Tony. Jane told her that she had brought a change of clothes for her and she needed to change. Jane didn't want to be late dropping Zoey off as she needed to get back to work.

Zoey had so much fun at Maura's and wanted to spend the night again. Jane dropped Zoey off at school and then went back to work. She needed to talk to Maura. Jane went down to the morgue and knocked softly on Maura's open office door. Maura looked up and smiled when she saw Jane leaning against the door jam. "Hello, Jane."

Jane didn't notice that someone else was in the room. Maura stood up from the couch and Jane's eyes never left Maura. Suddenly Maura's guest rose and walked towards Jane, "My, aren't you tall, dark and oh so beautiful. Maura, you didn't tell me you had such great looking beauties here."

"Addison this is my friend and coworker, Detective Jane Rizzoli. Jane, this is my friend, Dr. Addison Montgomery." Maura didn't want to say former girlfriend.

Jane and Addison just looked at each other, as if they were sizing each other up. Each of them extending a hand to shake but both missing each other's hand. They both were looking at Maura. When Addison broke her stare of Maura, she found Jane's hand and shook it. "Such a firm handshake, detective. Are you married or seeing anyone?"

"Addison," Maura quickly shouted. She was embarrassed at how forward Addison was being. She definitely wasn't shy when she saw something that she liked and right now Addison's eyes were on a certain detective and Maura didn't like it. She didn't like it one bit. She knew Addison's reputation and she didn't want Jane to become another notch on Addison's belt. 'Wait,' she thought to herself, 'does Jane even like women?'

"Ah, no and no." Jane answered Addison's question. "I'm a widow and I am raising our three-year old daughter." Maura frowned, she didn't know this about her friend. She had to admit that although they got along great, they hadn't discussed anything about their private lives. They mainly talked about work. She felt that was okay though as they were still getting to know each other.

Addison planted a big kiss on a surprised Maura's lips and then attempted and failed to plant a kiss on Jane's lips as she left the office telling Maura, "I will see you tonight, let's say 8 PM at that Dirty Robber place you were telling me about. Ta da for now."

Maura tried telling Addison, "But, Addison, I don't have …" Maura didn't get to finish as Addison was out the door. She was trying to tell Addison that she didn't have a sitter for Tony tonight as Tina had plans.

Jane and Maura were both stunned as they watched Addison leave the office. When Addison cleared the morgue and was no longer in eye sight, Jane asked, "what just happened here?"

Maura laughed and just told Jane, "Addison Montgomery, that is what just happened here."

"Is she your girlfriend or something?" Jane asked not sure what to make of the situation. Maura led Jane to the couch and they sat down to have this conversation. Maura didn't know why but she wanted to make sure that Jane knew that there was nothing going on with her and Addison, especially after that kiss.

"She was my girlfriend during college but now she is simply just a friend. A friend that I think would like to get to know you better." Maura replied with a straight face, no smile as she wished that Jane hadn't seen Addison. She wasn't ashamed of Addison, she just didn't want Addison interfering in her budding friendship with Jane. Maura was attracted to Jane and she didn't know if Jane was into women or not.

Jane thought to herself, 'oh, I didn't know Maura liked women. I wonder how she feels about me, because I can't seem to get her out of my mind.' She knew that Maura liked her as a friend but wasn't sure about anything else. Jane had never really been attracted to women, until she met Maura. There was just something special about Maura.

"Jane, I hope Addison didn't offend you in any manner. She can be quite … well, I don't know how to say it, forward, I guess. She seems to have sunk her eyes on you and well, she has quite the reputation for loving and leaving women. She travels for her job and she seems to have a different woman in every town she visits."

"Well, she is quite beautiful but she is not my type." Jane stated and shocked Maura. "Redheads really aren't my cup of tea, now beautiful blondes like you that is a different story." Jane knew she was flirting but figured it couldn't hurt anything. She now knew that Maura was into women, so she thought she would throw that little fact out there.

"Oh," was all that Maura managed to say before someone knocked on her door. Maura was actually grateful for the interruption as this was not the time or place for this conversation with Jane. Maura replied to the knock by saying, "Come in."

Susie was the person at the door and she was just notifying Maura, "the lab results that you have been waiting for are in." Maura took the results and quickly looked them over. "Susie, can you please deliver these results to Detective Crowe?"

"Sure, Dr. Isles." Susie left the room being sure to close the office door and then Maura sighed a sigh of relief as Jane didn't pick up their previous conversation. Instead, she thanked Maura for watching Zoey.

"Hey, Maur, thanks again for watching Zoey. Frost and I had an appointment with a prospective suspect in our case. We needed to follow up on the lead and it paid off. We arrested our suspect. I am going to question him now. The evidence that we had collected leans heavily to him so I think we will be able to close this case. If he confesses it will be that much easier to close the case."

"That is great. I am so proud of you." And she was. Maura loved how great Jane was at her job. She had worked with detectives before but Jane was by far the best detective she had ever encountered. The team of Jane, Frost and Korsak were simply the best team ever. They played off of each's others strengths and the combination worked well.

Jane blushed a little and turned her head towards the floor. "Thanks, Maur. I wouldn't have been able to grab the suspect if you hadn't watch Zoey for me. Normally my ma watches her but with her sister being in the hospital, she wasn't available."

"How is your Aunt doing?" Maura asked. She was concerned. She knew how much Jane's family meant to her.

"Not good, I'm afraid. The priest is performing last rights. I am going to go see her as soon as I finish questioning our suspect. If he confesses like I think he will, we will have this case closed later today."

Jane paused and then continued, "Frost said he would tackle any paperwork after the interrogation so I can go be with my family. I would skip the interrogation but that is what I am best at and I want to get this guy and close this case." Jane was a little sad, Maura walked over and gave her a hug. They had become more tactile with each other in recent weeks and Jane hugged Maura back, almost on the verge of tears.

Maura broke the hug because she knew that Jane had to get upstairs and interrogate the suspect. But she didn't move away from Jane. With her hands grasping Jane's forearms she told her, "Jane, you know that I am here for you and if you need anything, please don't hesitate to ask. I will do anything to help you through this difficult time."

"Thanks, Maur. I really must get upstairs. I truly appreciate you and your friendship. You are more my type than your friend Addison so please don't worry about her trying to hook up with me, it will not happen, ever. As long as you and I are friends, no one like her will come between us and our friendship. You mean too much to me." With that said Jane quickly left the office so she could finish the interrogation and hopefully close the case. She didn't notice the huge smile on Maura's face as she left.

The suspect confessed to the crime and Jane and Frost were able to quickly complete the paperwork. Jane went to spend time with her family before she had to pick Zoey up from her afterschool program. Jane hated having her in the afterschool program but Zoey was enjoying it. Her friends were there and she was able to play with them after school.

Jane was sad, she knew that might be the last time she saw her aunt. Her aunt didn't even recognize the people in the room with her. For most of Jane's stay her aunt was unconscious. Jane stood with her mother in her arms. Her mother was devastated, she knew she was losing her older sister.

Angela prayed that they caught the guy that hit her sister. He had left the scene of the accident. The cameras in the area had caught the accident on tape so it was just a matter of time before they caught the driver that fled the scene. Jane wanted to help but she knew it was not in her jurisdiction. She did keep in contact with the detective on the case.

Jane and Zoey had talked about her aunt as Zoey was wondering why her mama was so sad. Zoey said they needed to say extra prayers for their family. Jane loved how compassionate her daughter was to others and their feelings.

Zoey had only seen her great aunt a few times each year but she loved her and didn't want her to die. Jane explained that sometimes a person's injuries are too severe and that they cannot survive the injuries, even though their family isn't ready for them to pass away. Zoey understood but still didn't want her great aunt to pass away.

When Jane and Zoey got ready for bedtime that night, Jane asked her, "Okay little one time for bed, which story would you like me to read to you tonight?"

Zoey smiled and stated, "I want a mama original story."

"Oh, okay let me ask you a few questions. Are there people in the story?" Jane was pretty good at making up stories on the fly and Zoey loved her mama's original stories.

"Yes." Zoey replied and didn't provide any other details. She wanted her mama to interrogate her. She loved when her mama asked her questions and then made up the story.

"How many people?" the detective asked her daughter.

"Four, a detective and a doctor and a little girl and a little boy."

"Does the detective and doctor have any special skills?" Jane was curious to see what her daughter would say.

"Yes, the detective is a protector, you know like when the prince protects the princess."

"Oh, so is the doctor a princess?"

"I didn't say that but yes, she is a beautiful, smart princess with long blonde hair." Jane laughed as Zoey described the princess. The princess seemed to resemble Maura, Zoey's new BFF.

"How about the prince? Is he handsome and blonde haired?"

"No mama, the prince is handsome with long dark hair like you." Zoey explained as Jane formed a story for her daughter.

"Okay, how old is the little girl?"

"Almost four." Zoey replied with a huge smile.

"Sounds a lot like you, is it you?" Jane asked.

"Could be." Zoey laughed as she replied to her mama.

"Okay, how old is the little boy?" Jane asked, she loved making up stories with Zoey.

"Ten." Zoey quickly replied.

"Okay, let's get comfortable so I can start our story." Jane settled in next to Zoey and used her arm to pull Zoey in close to her.

"Thank you, mama." Zoey stated as she repositioned so that she was looking at her mother.

"You are welcome, baby." Jane told her daughter as she kissed her forehead.

Jane was telling the story and Zoey was adding details as they went. She told Jane that the little girl's name is Z and the little boy's name is Tony. Jane stopped telling the story as she realized what Zoey just told her. "Z, is Tony real?"

Zoey replied, "Of course, mama, he is Maura's son."

"Maura, has a son?" Jane questioned, she was surprised, she didn't know that Maura had a son.

"Didn't you know that mama?" Zoey asked her mother thinking she should have known that, she was Maura's friend.

"No baby, I didn't know that Maura had a ten-year old son, name Tony."

"He looks like he could be my brother." Zoey informed Jane.

"Zoey, get dressed we need to go." Jane said in a hurried voice.

Zoey was shocked and asked, "Where are we going?"

"To see Maura and Tony." Jane stated without showing any emotion, she was slightly dazed.

"Great!" Zoey jumped up off of her bed and immediately got dressed, she was excited to be going to Maura and Tony's house.

Jane picked up her phone and looked to make sure that she had Maura's address. Once she found out she did in fact have Maura's address, she grabbed her jacket and car keys and shouted upstairs, "Come on Z, we got to go."

"Okay, mama, I will be right down." Zoey informed her as she put on her remaining shoe. Jane was quite interested in getting to Maura's house. She wanted to find out if her suspicions were true. Was Tony the son that she gave up for adoption ten years ago? If so, was Maura Tony's adoptive mother? She needed to find out. She couldn't get to Maura's fast enough.

She had never been to Maura's house before and had never really looked up what part of town Maura lived in. She had added Maura's address to her contacts in her phone but had never checked out the address.

She remembered Bella telling her that Tony's adoptive mother was well off but until Zoey mentioned that Maura had a ten-year old son named Tony, Jane hadn't thought anything about it because she didn't know that Maura had a child. It had never come up in their conversations. Every time she was about to ask Maura, something came up and she never presumed the line of questioning again.

Fifteen minutes later they arrived at Maura's house. Jane was nervous, she and Zoey walked up to the front door and Jane knocked. After about half a minute the door opened and there stood Addison Montgomery. Jane was so disappointed, she didn't want to have to deal with Addison right now. She wanted to talk to Maura and meet Tony.
