"And whats your super power?"

A grin spread across his red lips and Lily felt her pulse quicken.

He glanced down and his eyes sparkled with amusement.

They were a bright yellow after he had been hunting at night.

It was ridiculous but Lily knew exactly when he was leaving, although he made sure that she was sound asleep when he did. He made no noise or touched her but instinctively she felt colder, restless, alone.

It wasn't that he woke her up, it was the dream she was having. She still felt the fear deep inside her when she thought of the images that flitted through her subconscious.

He seemed to notice her discomfort and pulled her closer to him.

After she got better he firmly believed that some fresh air would be good for her and they went for a walk. Well Carlisle went for a walk, she was more of a weight.

After he had persuaded her not to put more weight on her knee than necessary, he had lifted her with ease and carried her in his arms. At first she resisted the idea but now she was more than happy. Besides, he was actually right - the forest was really good for her. Even if she wouldn't mind staying in the hut with him ... forever.

His cool, hard chest was perfectly placed against her cheek and she could feel the shallow breaths he took. The absence of his heartbeat was strange at first but it didn't took much time to get used to it. His scent helped too.

It was .. Lily could hardly describe it. It was a bit laundry detergent, rain, fresh cut grass, then just characteristic Carlisle. It was heaven.

"I have none."

His voice was neutral and she could feel that he didn't mind.

Still, she raised an eyebrow and looked at him skeptically. He caught her gaze and his eyes sparkled again. When she bit her lip, they suddenly darkened.

"Is something the matter?" As usual his smooth voice invaded her mind.

"You're a vampire who works as a doctor. I would say that counts as a gift."

His pearly white teeth flashed and her gaze wandered to his lips.

"I don't think so, but I don't need a gift. I have you. You are the best gift I can imagine."

Of course, she immediately flushed and hid her face in his chest. His laugh vibrated in his upper body. He knew exactly how badly she could handle compliments. Suddenly he nudged her with his head and she heard his voice in her ear.

"That color suits you well."

She looked up and stared into his black eyes. He leaned over her and her heart raced.

"Why do they do that?"

Carlisle stopped and looked puzzled.

"Your eyes."

He seemed to understand and as if she had known, his eyes brightened to a yellow tone again as he leaned away. Lily hadn't even noticed that they had stopped.

"Thirst or rather the desire."

"Is that why they turn black when you are with me? Because you ... desire my blood?"

Her voice was free from fear, she knew fully well that he would never harm her. It was one of the strange things that had to do with Carlisle. She just knew. She didn't know why but she was sure. He would not hurt her, even in his greatest rage, in his biggest thirst, he would never harm her.

He looked at her again and leaned towards her. His scent surrounded her and she breathed in greedingly. As if on cue, his eyes darkened again.

"No. Not your blood."

The tone in his voice was anything but innocent.

It was ... she couldn't put a better name on it ... it was want. He kissed her tenderly, but reacted in seconds when she groaned. The kiss became demanding and she clung to him as best she could, which was unnecessary as he would never let her fall.

Suddenly his body stiffened and he yanked his head away from her. His eyes were pitch black but she was sure it wasn't her fault this time. He stared at the dense forest and took a few deep breaths, as if trying to smell something.

Only when a light breeze came, a surprised expression spread on his face.

Lily also searched the forest with her eyes and even sniffed, but could not smell anything except the damp earth and the wonderful scent of Carlisle. Suddenly there was a rustle and Carlisle leaned forward slightly as if he were ready to attack.

"For us the pact ist sill intact. I do not want to cause andy troubles."

He spoke in a firm and determined voice and Lily could hear the experience and the wisdome in it. It was suddenly obvious that he was the leader of his family. There was a deep rumble coming from the forest and she was so startled that her fingers digged into the unyielding skin of Carlisle.

His eyes were fixed one point and Lily narrowed her eyes when suddenly a man appeared there.

"Sam?"

Her voice was incredulous.

What the hell was he going on here.

Why was Sam Uley standing in the middle of the woods, wearing nothing but shorts? It was freezing but he didn't even seem to notice.

Sam's posture changed suddenly.

Moments before, he was leaning forward, ready to attack, and his eyes were boisterous and wild.

Now he was rather surprised.

"Lily?"

He stared at her in horror.

"What are you doing here?"

Sam ignored her and gave Carlisle a hateful look.

"What do you want with her?"

His voice was ice cold and trembled and Lily suddenly felt the coldness of the surroundings creep into her. He took a threatening step towards her. Sam wouldn't attack just like that, Lily knew him, but every second she became more aware that something was going on that she had no idea about.

Carlisle immediately shook his head and took a step back.

"I won't hurt her."

"Sam what are you doing?"

"You ask me that ?!"

His voice grew loud and she felt Carlisle stiffen. It was obvious that he didn't like the fact that Sam raised his voice at her.

"Do you know what he is?"

He pointed accusingly with his finger at Carlisle and Lily noticed for the first time what a huge man he had become. He was in no way inferior to Emmett, his muscles twitched nervously under his skin and he looked threatening.

"Carlisle!"

A rumbling voice rang out from behind them and the bear appeared, with the goddess in tow. The aggressive expression on her beautiful face made her look like a beast, a beautiful beast but still a beast.

Sam immediately took a few steps backwards and he started to tremble. What happened next shocked Lily so much that she almost fell out of Carlisle's arms.

Sam Uley, Leah's nice and funny friend, Paul's buddy, turned into a giant black wolf.

The wolf bared its teeth and apparently Lily was the only one who was surprised. Emmett and Rosalie immediately stood in front of Carlisle and crouched as if they might strike anytime. The wolf grew restless and stepped from one huge paw to the other. Dark growls escaped his throat and he bared his huge fangs at them.

"We are still no danger. I could never harm her, she is my mate."

Carlisle's voice was gentle and soothin and it did something that Lily hadn't expected.

The wolf's eyes widened and he stared at her. He still looked scary and she held onto Carlisle even tighter. Suddenly she saw something in the big dark eyes. It was an emotion she couldn't place. He threw his head back and howled. The howling went through her whole body and the creature looked so desperate it tore her heart apart. She could only stare after him as he disappeared into the forest.

"Damn."

Emmett's voice was so light, as if he hadn't just faced a giant beast. He turned and gave Lily a mischievous grin.

"Thank you."

Carlisle's voice was gentle, it no longer bore the authority it did before.

"Never mind."

The bear shrugged its massive shoulders and looked at Lily again with a playful expression. It seemed like he was a little disappointed that the situation had resolved so quickly.

Suddenly he moved his mouth but Lily couldn't hear anything. His movements were so fast that she almost missed them. Again she wondered what was happening and why she was apparently the only one who was not involved.

Finally she felt Carlisle's gaze on her. He looked at her expectantly, as if he had just said something to her. She raised an eyebrow questioningly.

"Emmett says there is something I should see. Would it be ... would it be okay if Rosalie stayed with you for a while?"

Confused, she looked around. When did Emmes say that? She could only nod and he pressed his forehead to hers. His gaze was determined, he stared right into her soul. She shivered, but not from being so vulnerable to him, but rather from the cold autumn air.

"I'll be back soon, I promise."

Emmett giggled as if Carlisle had said something incredibly funny. He kissed her on the forehead and suddenly she was in Rosalie's arms.

Her stature was much smaller than Carlisle's, but she seemed completely unimpressed by Lily's weight.

Her face was a stoic mask, like it had been when she first met her. Bored, she nodded to Carlisle and started off. Lily's head was pressed against Rosalie's stone hard body and her stomach was heavy. Suddenly she was in front of the hut and she felt sick.

"Are you throwing up now?"

"No!"

She continued meekly "Maybe."

Lily swallowed and tried to pull herself together. There was no way she could vomit in front of such a beauty, even now she felt like a piece of coal next to a diamond.

"Can you stand or should I carry you to bed?"

Rosalie's voice had a pungent undertone but she wasn't angry. Lily knew, she only asked for Carlisles sake.

"No, it's okay. I just need my-"

Suddenly she already had the crutch in her hands.

"-crutch. Thank you."

It was strange, Carlisle always seemed to adapt his speed in front of her. His movements were fluid and slow. Human. But the Rosalies were ... impatient. As if she saw no point in hiding what she was.

She went into the hut and noticed the cold. The fire had died a while ago and she shivered again. She turned to the stove and saw that it was already on fire again. The speed was slowly starting to get on her nerves. She let herself fall heavily on the bed and put her leg up. She could almost hear Carlisle's pleading voicer, and even the thought of it was enough to make her feel a sense of need.

Now that she experienced his absence for the first time while awake, she realized that it was absolutely not a good feeling. It was terrible. She missed him.

She saw Rosalie's gaze as she looked around the hut indifferent. It was something that immediately made her angry.

"You can also wait outside. You don't have to babysit me."

She knew she was being ungrateful.

After all, Rosalie had just carried her across the forest, but she couldn't help it.

The hut was ... she couldn't name it. But nobody was allowed to devalue the hut.

No one.

Rosalie looked at her in surprise and Lily wondered if she was the first person to talk to her like that.

But she did not seem impressed. Why should she? She could probably kill her faster than Lily would even realize.

"Carlisle asked me to take care of you."

She said this as if it was a perfect explanation for her presence and Lily could see that there was more to her statement than just a request from the head of the family.

"Well then."

She leaned against the end of the bed and stared at the ceiling. It was so quiet that Lily almost thought she had imagined it all. Suddenly Rosalie moved and Lily was startled.

"It was Edward's idea."

Lily looked surprised at the person who was still standing in the middle of the room and was now looking around almost indecisively.

"What?"

"... to leave you."

She said it like it was so obvious.

Just the mention hurt and Lily could only nod. Why did she say that now of all times.

Rosalie's voice hardened immediately.

"So you don't have to blame him anymore."

Lily looked at her confused.

"I wasn't planning to."

Rosalie seemed relieved and crossed her arms over her body.

"What was that in the forest?"

Lily's curiosity won and she was surprised that Rosalie actually answered her. She didn't seem to mince words like Carlisle. It was problably because she did not care if she scared or opposed Lily.

"A wolf from the Quileutes tribe. We thought they would be all gone by now but apperently there is still one left."

"A wolf .. But Sam is only 20 years old?"

Rosalie's eyes lit up in surprise. It was the first expression she saw on the beautys face.

"You know the dog?"

Lily didn't like the way she pronounced the word, but she bit her tongue and nodded instead. She could see that she wanted to know more, but Lily stayed silent.

Her mind raced.

Sam Uley was kind of a werewolf. How? She said from the tribe, maybe its in his blood?

Did that mean Paul was one too? And why was he so aggressive towards Carlisle and her?

"They started to change to protect their tribe from us, I suppose."

The voice remained monotonous and bored, as if she didn't just had almost a fight with a huge black furred monster.

"But you do hunt animals?"

"That's why we're allowed to stay in this area. Carlisle made a pact with their leader back then. I am amazed that this Uley is the first wolf we see this time."

"Why?"

She rolled her eyes as if explaining something to a child.

"Because the chief back then was called Black. He didn't have black fur, though. Which made it even more ironic."

Lily thought about it. There were still Blacks in the reservate. She was friends with Rachel Black and remembered that she also had a younger brother, he couldn't be much younger than Lily. Were they wolves too? If so, why was Sam alone? How on earth could she not have noticed that?

"You know him."

She emphasized the question again and Lily could for the first time hear something like real interest in her voice.

"Yes, I am friends with him."

Rosalie laughed a clear, bright laugh. It sounded like a symphony.

"Well not anymore."

Lily looked up in surprise when the door opened.

Carlisle appeared and Lily felt instantly relieved. He had this effect on her, as if the world would only be all right again when she was with him. For a realist like Lily, it was even a little grueling.

She hated romance novels and now she lived in one of them herself.

With vampires and werewolves. And a crutch.

"Thank you, Rose."

He nodded to her and his eyes shone grateful.

"We get her something to eat."

She disappeared so fast, that Lilys eyes could not see her and before she knew it, Carlisle sat down next to her on the bed.

She couldn't tell what it was exactly, but he looked sad.

Almost heartbroken.

He searched the hut with his eyes and Lily carefully grabbed his hand. It was cold and it took her a moment to get used to it again. Carlisle sighed when he felt the contact and he relaxed suddenly.

Lily thought for a moment whether she had an effect on him like he did on her. Whether he also felt the feeling of security as soon as she was near him. Which, of course, would be ridiculous, as if she could protect him.

"What's up?"

Carlisle ran a hand through his damp blond locks and Lily's eyes followed the movement in fascination.

"Bella is... not feeling well."

Lily's stomach contracted.

Bella was a thought she was all too happy to ignore. The similarities were too obvious and the differences too tragic. She knew roughly how Bella was doing, and it was a state she wouldn't even want her worst enemy to be in.

"Did you talk to her?"

He shook his head and gently squeezed her hand.

"No. I was outside the house. Nobody saw me."

Lily nodded, even though she thought to herself that Bella might be better if she at least knew that someone was here. She would also have felt better if Alice had at least checked on her now and then. But well, she didn't want to compare the few hours of separation with the two weeks Bella had to go through now. The feeling of abandonment was unbearable.

She pulled on his hand close to her and he lay down next to her. Immediately she put her head on his shoulder and she felt his arms wrap around her. He held her tight, not so tight that it hurt but so tight that she could barely move. It was almost as if he had to confirm to himself that she was actually here.

Something was different.

She sensed his fear and wondered if the wolf had worried him or if there was more to it than that. His reaction didn't surprise her, Carlisle was the most compassionate .. person, man, vampire that she knew.

Still, he really should not put Bellas pain on his shoulders, after all, it was not his fault.

The rain got heavier and pattered evenly on the roof of the hut, the fire crackled and although the body on which she was lying was cold, she was comfortably warm. It was already dark, the days ended earlier and earlier and Lily felt her eyelids grow heavy. She didn't even hear Emmett putting a bag of food on the table. His deep giggle felt miles away from her.

She felt a cool hand brushing her cheek and sighed while half asleep.

Lily now knew what Carlisle's gift was.

No matter how bad the day went, how restless her thoughts were and how messed up her life seemed, he could make everything better with just being there. So maybe he was right after all, his gift was her. Or at least meant for her.

That night she dreamed of huge wolves and Bella.

And Carlisle.
