Well, that what she would call a sight for sore eyes, Lily thought to herself.
With her mouth open, she stared at the creature in front of her.
Tiny diamonds reflected the sunlight and she had to narrow her eyes to keep looking at the brightness. It was breathtaking. Lily was sure that she had never seen anything so beautiful.
He cocked his head and waited. On his delicately shaped jawbones and cheeks glittered thousands of ...stars that apparently made up his whole skin and his hair shone in a light blonde. He looked unreal. Like Apollo. She felt like a mortal who was granted a look and she felt terribly unworthy to be a witness of this beauty.
"Well?"
Lily only realized now that she still hadn't said anything and swallowed.
"You look like an angel."
Inwardly she winced at the lame comparison, but it was so fitting. The corner of his mouth twitched but his eyes got sad. The look did nothing to diminish his beauty, on the contrary, he even got more beautiful.
"I'm more of the opposite."
His voice was serious and joyless.
Lily heard the hatred he felt for himself and it broke her heart. How could someone like him think of himself that way?
"Carlisle, you are an angel."
He wanted to roll his eyes, she could feel that, but instead he stared at her. The sad expression on his face was a tragic sight in combination with his glittering skin and reminded her of one of the statues in cemetries. Sad angels, beautiful and yet so heartbreaking.
She could see that he didn't believe her.
"Seriously. That was the first thing I thought when I saw you."
"Yes, because of the 10 milligrams of morphine, the shock and the concussion."
Lily shook her head and took a step towards him. The sun's rays now reached her skin and her gaze flickered briefly to the unspectacular sight. Her hand gently touched his forearms. In the shadow, the skin was only pale and Lily played with the sparkling prisms on his skin for a moment.
"No. You're doing good. Maybe not right now, but you help people. You save them."
He didn't seem convinced and Lily stepped even closer to him. His eyes automatically moved to her and she noticed how they were getting darker.
His arm wrapped around her body and he pulled her closer, which was almost impossible. She felt her heart beat faster and she inhaled the familiar scent.
Victoria would show up here tomorrow with an army of super soldiers and Lily was scared. Well that was not true, she was panicking.
She did not fear for herself but for his sake. She didn't doubt that he could fight, he was certainly old enough, but she worried that his good heart would be his downfall. Perhaps he would hesitate, perhaps he would show mercy to an enemy who would not do him this favor.
He pressed his forehead to hers and she closed her eyes for a second.
"A penny for your thoughts?"
His voice was deep and soft and Lily immediately felt the goosebumps running down her back. The weather got cold fast, but strangely enough it felt warm with him.
"They may be worth more."
He sighed and grinned.
"Of course they are."
He knew of course that she was worried about tomorrow and no matter how much he assured her, it didn't help.
"Everything will be fine. You have to trust Alice, she is usually right."
"Usually? Bella and the cliff?"
She raised an eyebrow and eyed him defiantly. He grinned cautiously and it was so attractive that she wanted to kiss him immediately.
"Well that was because of the wolves, she can't help it."
"What about me?"
Now he snorted.
"Good. There may have been a couple of ... suprises. But this time it will work. Trust me."
His voice sounded so certain and she envied his positivity. Whether it was people or situations, Carlisle always tended to see the good in them. In contrast to her. She generally was suspicious and was rarely wrong.
She shook her head slightly and he pressed his nose to her throat.
She felt the cool breath and shuddered.
The thought that he might not be here anymore was so painful that she had to throw it away immediately. In addition, it was also the plan that bothered her.
She would wait out on a mountain somewhere with Edward, Jacob and Bella while the rest of them fought.
What made her even more angry was that Carlisle had only agreed to leave her side because Edward refused to leave Bella alone. So they would be safe and Carlisle had to fight.
Worst of all, the reason Victoria became the public enemy in the first place was actually Edward and Bella.
Lily had to pay for something she had neither done nor known back then.
Like Edward's visit to Volterra. Now Aro knew about her, about her mortality and he knew Carlisle well enough to know, that he would most likely refuse to changer her.
Anger arose inside her.
Edward's selfishness not only endangered her, now his entire family was in danger as well. But nobody minded, well except Rosalie. Carlisle didn't even flinch when Alice announced the fight. There was never a question if they going to fight. Just how.
Lily wanted nothing more than to just disappear with Carlisle.
To leave everything behind and to sail somewhere safe and hide out for eternity. But Carlisle would never abandon his family, and they would never abandon him. So she was stuck right in the middle.
"We should head back."
His voice was right next to her ear and her anger suddelny disappeared. He could always manage that. Somehow his presence alone calmed her.
In one fluid movement he already had her in his arms and she saw the flash of colors go by. His body was colder than usual or it just felt like that, but regardless did she press herself against him as tightly as she could.
Her craving for him was answered and she could hear the tearing of her clothes. The mattress sagged under her weight and he was just everywhere. Breathlessly she tried to touch as much of him as possible and memorize everything, which was probably quite unnecessary - as if she could ever forget him.
She got lost and when she fell asleep, it was his murmurmed words she heard. "I love you."
"Good morning."
Carlisle's voice was soft and delicate and Lily immediately pressed closer to him. To be woken up by his voice was probably the greatest thing there was and Lily couldn't even mourn her sleep, not when her dream was right next to her. She glanced at him sleepily, his blond locks, though disheveled, laid still perfect. The pale light that shone in from the window made him look even more unreal.
"Morning, angel."
He chuckled and she grinned into his armpit.
"You mean demon."
She felt his lips on her forehead and sighed. How could he be a demon.
"Fallen angel. This is my last offer."
"Good. I'll take it then."
He kissed her deeply and she groaned. Her desire never diminished, she was satisfied for a short time, but he was able to wake it again without difficulty.
She devoured him one last time with all she had and apparently she wasn't the only one with this plan. Carlisle hands never left her body, his lips never left her skin. Again and again he whispered declarations of love in an accent that sounded older than he was in her ear and she was again tempted to persuade him to just run away with her.
Even when she shouldn't, she compared her love for him to the love she felt for Alex. It was the same and yet so different. With Alex it was a friendly love, she just liked his character and his humor. Maybe it wouldn't have survived everything, but Lily was happy to have lived with him in the here and now.
Carlisle on the other hand was a whole different chapter.
There was something final about her feelings, something that would never change. It was more primitive, almost feral and went much deeper.
It was an urge, an addiction, an addiction that completely absorbed her. She needed him, not because he took care of her or she didn't want to be alone, she needed him because she had the feeling that she could never be happy again without him.
The rest of the family were already waiting for her on the field that alice saw and she looked into Carlisle's now dark eyes.
"Everything OK?"
He grinned at her and her heart stumbled as always. Except that this time everyone could hear it. She heard Emmett laugh.
"I should ask you that."
Carlisle nudged her nose with his larger one and she almost giggled like a schoolgirl.
The wolves appeared and Carlisle hugged her even closer. Altough it wasn't like him, she feld the ppssessiv manner. Her eyes wandered and automatically her gaze stopped at a huge gray wolf. His eyes sparkled and she recognized him immediately.
Paul.
"Are you ready?"
Edward appeared next to them and Jacob trudged out of the woods. His bronze skin was just starting to glow and Lily noticed the sheer amount of muscle he'd gained. Like Paul. Speaking of the devil.
Paul appeared behind him, also only wearing pants, he proudly carried his head and grinned at her cheekily in his usual way. She felt Carlisle stiffen and could have sworn he growled when Paul winked at her.
"The taxi is here!"
Jake's voice was expectant and Lily could see the joy in his eyes as he walked over to Bella.
During a heated discussion it was decided that Jacob would carry Bella to the hiding place and Paul would carry Lily. Carlisle and Edward were immediately against it, but couldn't argue against logic. If Victoria smelled Edward and Bella's scent together, she would immediately follow the trail. It would probably not be any different with Lily and Carlilse altough she did not know of the connection. Also it seems that the scent of the wolves was more of a stench and covered her and Bellas scent.
Lily knew that Carlisle had narrowed his eyes and was staring at Paul. The mood was tense and as if by magic everyone seemed to relax at once. A quick glance at Jasper was enough to find the source of the sudden change.
Paul walked up to Carlisle and she felt his fingers dig into her flesh. Jasper's ability obviously had its limits.
"Well?"
The triumph that could be seen on Paul's face was too much even for Lily and she rolled her eyes. Carlisle tore his gaze from Paul and looked at her, suddenly he seemed much older and his look was sorrowfull She knew how much he wanted to be with her and how much it did cost him to leave her.
"See you later." His voice was low but full of promises. She could only nodd and hope that he was right.
Reluctantly but carefully, Carlisle handed her over and stared the wolf into the ground. Paul didn't seem to mind the heated glance, he problalby even enjoyed it.
"You are heavier than you look."
"Thank you."
Her voice was flat and she shot Carlisle an apologetic look. His eyes brightened for a split second when his eyes met hers, but suddenly darkened again when he looked back at Paul.
With a jerk Paul trotted after Jacob and instinctively she wrapped her arms around him to get a grip. His skin was hot and altough it was not so smooth like Carlisle marble like skin, the warmth felt pleasant.
"Don't worry, I'm not going to drop you."
"I sure hope so."
He grinned and looked forward again. In front of them Jacob and Bella were chatting eagerly and Lily considered what to say. Apparently Jake had made a joke because Bella laughed out loud.
Paul snorted.
"What?"
"Jake. He still loves her." He huffed again and this time it sounded almost pitying.
"Well .. he'll get over it."
"I'm not so sure about that."
"Of course he will. Eventually."
His dark eyes found hers for a second. He looked so .. like Paul. Youthfull, daring. His eyes were always full of mischief and yet at the same time so open and friendly.
"What makes you so sure?"
Lily thought about it.
"She is not his imprint, is she?"
"So? Not everyone has one."
"But .. Jake is actually an alpha. His name is Black."
Paul nodded and didn't seem to be able to follow her train of thought.
"So?"
"Every alpha has a mate."
"Maybe. But even if he found his..."
"Then what?"
He seemed a little annoyed and Lily didn't know why.
She was shocked at how well she could still read him and how easy it was to talk to him.
Like old times. A dangerous thought.
"Even if he does imprint on someone, the feelings he has for Bella are ... really strong. Too strong. I have to listen to it often enough."
"And?"
He sighed and his broad shoulders shrugged slightly, as if he wasn't carrying her weight in his arms.
"And I wonder if his imprint will be enough."
She had never seen Paul so grown up, so mature and wise. His eyes were still fixed on Jake's back but in his eyes there was more. More than the easily riled young man, who tried to live up to everyones expectations.
"Why shouldn't it be enough? It's his soul mate, after all."
Lily tried to catch his gaze but he avoided her. She could see how he fought with himself. It was something that made others be drawn to him, sure he was a hothead, but at the same time he got his heart in the right spot. And he felt emotions deeply.
"Because .. even though I'm really happy, happier than I've ever been .. somehow .."
He broke off and she knew if she didn't dig deeper he would just change the subject and never talk about it again.
"Somehow?"
"I still sort of miss you."
Lily was speechless.
There was nothing she could say after that.
She also missed him in a way and she still felt the connection but telling him that wouldn't help him. Of course she didn't love him but he was her first love, she would never forget that. But telling him that wouldn't help him either.
Silence spread and both of them were caught up in their thoughts.
When they got to the tent, she tried to organize her thoughts as best she could. The last thing she needed now was Edward, who heard how she still had an indefinable feeling for Pau,l of all people.
Paul put her on her feet again and gave her a reassuring grin.
"Don't worry, I will come back to you."
She rolled her eyes at that but also felt worried. Paul would be the first to get into trouble ... just for the trouble sake. He and Emmett were problably a great fit.
The wolves disappeared into the forest, Jake would come back with Seth. Altough the young wolf was devastaded to not be able to fight with the rest, Sam would not risk him and she was glad. So he should be the link between them and the rest of the pack.
"It's all ready!"
Edward supported her and she slipped into the tent Alice had set up for them. Bella went out one more time and Edward's eyes followed her but he stayed inside. How comfortable, Lily thought.
"Lily."
She looked up in surprise.
She forgot his mind reading obviously. As soon as she opened her mouth, he interrupted her.
"I am sorry."
His voice was low, but it was honest. She could hear that he was serious and even if it didn't change the circumstances, it made a small difference to Lily.
"Its OK."
"No it is not."
"Right. It isn't."
He laughed out loud, his youthful features brimming with attractiveness.
He and Carlisle were as much alike as they were different. Edward had this boyish handsomeness while Carlisle looked more mature and more beautiful. His facial bones were more developed and more pronounced.
"Thank you."
Edward's toneless voice reminded her that he could hear every thought and she grinned at him, embarrassed.
Its going to be a long night.
