The United States is gone, and in it's place is a wasteland, created by nuclear fallout during the Great War. 234 years later, A Wasteland Survivor escorts a girl to new Charleston to reunite her with her uncle. will the Wasteland Survivor keep the little girl alive long enough to get to New Charleston, or will they succumb to the creatures that the nuclear fallout created?

6. Chapter 6

In New Charleston's prison cells the next day, John and Harold looked at the two Brotherhood of Steel scouts in the Jail cells. John recognized them and said, "Hello Billy, Nathan, surprised to see you two here." Billy was the first to speak and he said, "Whatever traitor, Elder Torres will deal with you all when reinforcements come." John smiled and said, "By Reinforcements, do you mean from the Commonwealth?" Nathan shook his head and said, "No, The reinforcements will be coming from the western brotherhood factions." John looked at Harold and told him, "Go let Mason know about the info we just got." Harold nodded his head and left. John then looked back at Nathan and Billy and said, "Why do you blindly follow Elder Torres? He's corrupt, he's an asshole, and a dumb piece of shit that can never tell the truth from lies if the facts bit him in the fucking ASS!"

"You won't be saying that when the Reinforcements arrive and we overwhelm the defenses of New Charleston." Billy told John, who looked back at Billy and said, "Just you watch us." John then left the jail cells to go talk to mason. In Mason's Office, John saw Piper, Harold, and Mason looking over a map of New Charleston. Mason then said, "Ah John, Harold just told us about the western factions of the Brotherhood coming here to reinforce Elder Torres." John nodded his head and asked Piper, "How long until Elder Maxson arrives?" Piper said, "Not that long, my husband told Maxson to get here as quickly as he can with Knights, Vertibirds, and the Airship." John nodded his head as Mason said, "I also sent Runners to the list of towns your group visited and to ask them to join our cause." Then Harold said, "I got in contact with some of the Rebels against Elder Torres and they're recruiting from the town's population to help us get inside the city. Not to mention that some of the rebels will come and aid in the defense." John nodded his head and said, "Good. Piper, does Elder Maxson have more authority than Elder Torres?"

"I highly doubt it, since Elder Torres is older than Maxson. But if Elder Maxson uses Parley, we might be able to win the other elders to our side." replied Piper. John chuckled before he said, "Ah Parley, haven't had to use that, doubt it will mean anything when it comes from me." Then Harold said, "Same here, but with Elder Maxson it might just work." Piper and John nodded their heads before John said, "But in case Parley doesn't work, let's get the AAA guns ready." Mason nodded his head and said, "I've had them ready when I heard about the incoming airships." John nodded his head and said, "We can also use the missiles from the cruisers and take the airships down."

"But they're not ready for land yet, we just need a bit more time." said Mason. John then said, "They can stay in the water, we just need them ready to launch their missiles. If Elder Maxson can't get the other Elders to side with us, then we'll launch the missiles and bring the Airships down and limit the number of Vertibirds the enemy can use." Mason nodded his head and said, "Okay, and we can use the captured Vertibirds we fixed up as Air support." Piper was then approached by one of Mason's men and said, "Mrs. Kingston, Elder Maxson contacted us and said that he is almost here, The Prydwen is moving at full speed so he can get here to commence Parley with the other two elders coming to assist Elder Torres." Piper nodded her head and said, "Thank you." Then Harold got handed a piece of paper from another Guard and he said, "We've also received word from Divine, Shakespearia, Paradise City, and some other settlements sympathetic with our cause, they'll send some of their forces here to join us."

"Good, we'll need all the help we can get." Mason said to Harold. That was when John said, "I'm going to do a patrol along the wall to see if there are areas that need fixing up." Mason nodded his head and said, "Good Idea, I'll join you." John nodded his head and the two went out of Mason's Office. Outside, John and Mason saw Claire playing with some other kids. Claire saw them and ran up to her uncle, who knelt down and picked his niece up. Mason then said, "Hey Claire Bear, you having a good time?" Claire nodded her head and said, "Yup, so much fun Uncle Mason. I'm really happy to be with family again." Mason and John smiled as John reached down and picked a flower. John then placed the flower behind Claire's left ear.

"Thanks John." Claire said with a smile on her face. John chuckled as he ruffled Claire's head and said, "You're welcome kiddo." John then said, "Wanna come with us as we check out the wall?" But Mason said, "Sorry John, but rules say no kids on the wall." John nodded his head and said, "Sorry Claire." but Claire said, "It's okay, can I hang out with you and Hyra later today though?" John smiled and said, "I don't see why not, I'll let Hyra know and we can hang out by the beach." Claire smiled as Mason placed her down and she ran off. Mason looked at John and said, "You would be perfect to watch over her when I'm gone."

"There has to be a way to get the Cancer out of you, did you really try everything?" John asked Mason, who nodded his head and said, "Everything, it's everywhere in my body John, there won't be much of me left to save."John looked at the ground and said, "You may have been a asshole to me Mason, but you were a hell of a shot when it came to Raiders and hunting." Mason smiled and the two buried the hatchet. Later that day, John, Hyra, and Claire were having fun on the beach as a few of Mason's men and Harold stood watch. Hyra then said to John, "So Mason asked you to be Claire's guardian when he passes?" John nodded his head and said, "Yeah, but the thing is… what if I'm not ready to be a father figure for her yet?"

"From what she told me and from what I've seen, you're more than ready to help her survive in the wasteland." Hyra told John, trying to raise his spirits. John smiled and as he was about to kiss Hyra, Claire called John to play with him in the surf. John smiled and said, "Alright, but you're going to get tickled when I catch you." John then waded in the water, and never realized how cold the ocean would be, but it was still radioactive so he brought some rad-away with them just to play it safe. In the water, John got splashed by Claire as she splashed it in his direction. John chuckled before he said, "Oh you're gonna get it now, come here you little scamp." John then chased Claire around before scooping her up and splashing water on both of them. Soon Mason came out and shouted, "John! He's here."

"Elder Torres?!" John shouted back, but Mason shook his head and said, "No, Elder Maxson, and President Kingston." John was speechless, but managed to get a few words to Claire and he said, "Go play with Hyra for a bit, I'll be right back." Claire nodded her head and played in the sand with Hyra as John and Mason went to greet the newcomers, along with Harold. On the Aircraft Carrier, John and Harold were in their Power Armor as Mason and his council stood next to John on his right, Piper, Codsworth, and Dogmeat stood on the left of Harold, and they all watched as a Brotherhood of Steel Airship flew over New Charleston and stopped facing inland. Afterwhich, a Vertibird detached and flew towards the Aircraft Carrier. John looked at his Power Armor and asked Harold, "How do I look?" Harold said, "You look fine John, now can you relax." John looked at Harold and said, "I'll try."

After the Vertibird landed, out walked two men. One man had a beard and wore a black Brotherhood of Steel officer uniform underneath a heavy padded leather coat with the Brotherhood insignia displayed on the right shoulder. His hair was in the form of a Military Haircut. The other man wore a vault suit, a Pipboy on one arm, and there was a Laser Rifle slung over his shoulder. The two men walked up as Piper walked up to the man in the Vault suit and said, "Still wearing this old thing honey? Why don't you wear a proper suit." the man she spoke to chuckled before he said, "Well what can I say, I like it." Piper rolled her eyes before she and the man in the vault suit, revealed to be President Kingston, kissed each other on their lips before President Kingston said, "Which one of you is Mayor Brown?"

"I am Mr. President." said Mason as he stepped forward. President Kingston stepped forward, extended his hand and said, "President Nate Kingston of the Commonwealth Republic, this is Elder Maxson." The other man stepped forward and slightly bowed his head. Then Mason said as he pointed to John, "Former Brotherhood of Steel Paladin John Bertrand, Former Brotherhood of Steel Sentinel Harold Moore, Ayana "Zoe" Batchelder, and Lee, a Former Raider turned good." Nate walked up to John and said, "I heard a lot about you from my wife, I'm glad you escorted her here." Nate extended his head, and John smiled, gladly shook it and said, "It's an honor to meet you sir, Mr. President." Nate Chuckled before he said, "Just call me Nate, I'm not into this whole sir but, I'm not that old."

"I hate to rush matters, but we have a battle plan to discuss." Said Elder Maxson. Nate nodded his head and said, "Right, of course, Mayor Brown, is there a place we can discuss our strategy?" Mason nodded his head and said, "Yes, there's a planning room next to my office, if you would follow me please." Mason then led Nate, Elder Maxson, John, Harold, Piper, Dogmeat, Zoe, Lee, and Mason Council to the Planning Room. In the planning Room, Mason listed off all the defensive locations, what they had and how much Ammo they had. Then Harold said, "I did an inspection of the wall, it can handle a few punches." John nodded his head and said, "Yeah, when I was still a part of Elder Torres and his followers, several Knights fired Missile Launchers at the wall and it held firm. Can't believe that I'm going to help defend the City I once tried to attack with Elder Torres and the Brotherhood of Steel under his command. Seems like a lifetime ago."

"Okay, so once the other two elders get here, I'll request a Parley with them and Elder Torres to try and get them to abandon Elder Torres's cause and join our Cause." Said Elder Maxson. John looked at Maxson and said, "Let's just hope that they do. I hate to have to take on three Brotherhood of Steel Elders with one on our side." Elder Maxson nodded his head and they began preparing the defenses. By the time it was Noon, volunteers from all the Settlements across the wasteland in South Carolina came to assist in the defense of New Charleston. Old friends joined as well such as Richard, Frank, Virginia, Tommy, and Frances. Even Rebecca and B.o.S Rebels answered the call.

By the time the defenses were Ready, two Airships were spotted, along with Vertibirds and ground Forces. Elder Maxson stood on the wall with Mason, Nate, John, Harold, Rebecca, and the defenders of New Charleston. John and Mason asked Hyra to take Claire and hide with her. Elder Maxson then pressed a button that was connected to loud speakers and said into the Mic for said loudspeakers, "This is Elder Maxson, Supreme leader of the East Coast chapter of the Brotherhood of Steel and commander of Air forces for the Commonwealth Republic, requesting a Parley with the Elders in command of all Brotherhood of Steel forces." A Few minutes later, Elder Maxson, Mason, Nate, and John waited in the middle of the field as a Vertibird landed and Elder Torres, along with two other Elders, got out and walked up to them.

When the three Elders got to Elder Maxson and the other, Elder Torres said, "Meet Elder Lemen of the Brotherhood of Steel's Plains Commonwealth chapter, and Elder Alexanderson of the Brotherhood of Steel's Gulf Commonwealth chapter." Elder Maxson then said, "Greetings, I assume you three know why I asked for Parley?" and Elder Alexanderson said, "My guess is that you want us to join your side and fight against Elder Torres here." Then Elder Torres said, "Why are you defending this city when you should be securing the Technology within it!" Elder Maxson told Torres, "I Follow the orders of my commander, President Kingston has told me not to ransack the City and to help defend it from you Elder Torres. I was also asked to convince the two Elders that you called to join us, so you are correct Elder Alexanderson." That was when Elder Alexanderson stepped over to Elder Maxson and said to him, "If the President of the Commonwealth Republic has taken a stand to protect a city, then I respect his choice and wish to join."

'One down, one to go' thought John as Elder Torres was shocked and called Elder Alexanderson a traitor. John then stepped forward and said as Elder Alexanderson's airship and men walked and flew by us to join the defense of New Charleston, "You're one to talk Elder Torres, you betrayed the Order after command told you to stop looking for Technology and help the people of the wasteland. Instead you chose to defy those orders and continue with taking Technology for yourself. Then when it came for the framing of me, you believed George after I specifically said what I saw, along with Rebecca, she said the exact same thing. But you didn't believe a word we said, and condemned me to be killed." Elder Torres smiled and said, "Did you really think I was that Idiotic, I knew George's men were taking those supplies, because I ordered him to tell them to do it."

"What?!" shouted John after hearing that. Elder Torres then said, "Yes, because you were a threat, that's why I sent you there, I knew you would run into them doing it and it would be a perfect way to finally kill you." Elder Lemen looked at Torres and said, "I see now that I should have never answered that call, you're just a power Hungry Tyrant." After which Elder Lemen joined Elder Maxson, Mason, Nate, John, and Elder Alexanderson. Elder Torres growled and shouted, "We have been betrayed, Kill the forces fighting for Elders Alexanderson and Lemen!" The Brotherhood of Steel forces Loyal to Elder Torres obeyed and opened fire at the Brotherhood of Steel forces loyal to Elders Alexanderson and Lemen. John, after seeing this trickery, tackled Elder Torres as Mason and Nate got the three Elders that were on their side to a safe place as the defenses of New Charleston were confused and didn't know who to shoot at.

John punched Elder Torres in the face before receiving a punch himself and getting knocked back as the Brotherhood of Steel forces loyal to Elder Lemen fell back to the wall, giving the Defenses on the Wall for New Charleston something to fire at and the Brotherhood of Steel forces loyal to Elder Torres were hit with small arms fire and rockets from the defenders. Mason saw that John was fighting Elder Torres and slowly losing. John was then on his back and just as Elder Torres was about to kill John, he got shot in the head and fell to the ground. John looked up and saw that Mason was standing there, holding a pistol with a smoking Barrel. Mason then ran to John and helped him up, but got hit in the chest by a Knight. John killed the knight and proceeded to carry Mason back to the wall where Nate and Harold were waiting for them. Then one of the Prewar Cruisers managed to drive onto the land and opened fire at the Assaulting Forces, forcing them to retreat, the battle was already over before it could drag on into a siege.

In the local Hospital, John was getting checked out when Claire and Hyra walked up to him and Claire asked, "Is my uncle okay?" Before John could answer, a doctor walked in. John saw him and asked, "How's Mason?" and the doctor said, "The shot from that knight you killed struck Mayor Brown in his heart, we couldn't bring him back even if we tried." John was speechless, Mason was gone. Claire then began to sob before John picked her up and held her in his arms as he let her cry, her only other family member was gone. John rubbed her back as he said, "I'm so sorry Claire." Claire wiped the tears away with a cloth that Hyra handed her. Just then, one of Mason's Advisors walked in and asked how he was doing, but was saddened when he was told the news of Mason's passing. The Advisor then said, "Then… I guess you're the new Mayor."

"What?" asked John, confused. The Advisor then told John, "It's a law that the Mayor of New Charleston choose the next Mayor before he dies. Mayor Brown chose you to be the next Mayor of New Charleston, and he said to tell you that you deserve the position." John was speechless again, but he managed to compose himself and said, "I accept the position." John then looked at Claire and said, "Your Uncle also asked me to be your Guardian if he was to pass away, that alright with you claire?" Claire smiled and hugged John and said, "Yae!" Hyra giggled as John gave Claire a hug and he shot her a look before saying, "Want to call me daddy Claire?" and Claire nodded her head vigorously. John smiled and said, "Okay, and what about you call Hyra mommy?" Hyra shot John a confused look as Claire nodded her head vigorously before John placed Claire on her feet.

John then got down on one knee, took out a Ring and said, "This Ring was given to me by my mother to ask the woman I love dearly to marry me. It was used by my dad to ask my mom, and now I'm asking you Hyra. Will you do this guy the honor of being your husband?" Hyra was speechless before she nodded her head and said, "YES!" John smiled and slid the Ring onto Hyra's finger before pulling her into a passionate kiss. Claire jumped for Joy before hugging her adopted parents.

Later, some of Mason's closest friends in New Charleston, John, Claire, Hyra, Lee, Zoe, Harold, Elder Maxson, Elder Alexanderson, Elder Lemen, Nate, Piper, Dogmeat, Codsworth, Richard, Frank, Virginia, Tommy, and Frances, Rebecca, and Henry attended the Burial of Mason in the Local Cemetery. Claire was on John's Lap as the Priest finished up and they placed his Body in the ground. As the Burial team shoveled the dirt into the hole, everyone slowly left the area, until only Claire, John, Hyra, Piper, and Nate remained. Nate stood next to John as he said, "The Commonwealth Republic sends its deepest Sympathies, and I hope we can work well together in the future." John nodded his head and said, "Of course, I would greatly appreciate that Nate, thank you." Nate nodded his head as he and Piper walked off.

That night, John and Hyra walked into the Room the Mayor of New Charleston resided in. Mason's effects were still there since he was killed so soon. John walked up to the window and stared out at New Charleston, the weight of protecting the city was on his shoulders now. Soon there was a knock on the Door and Hyra opened it to reveal Harold, Zoe, and Lee. John allowed them in and when Hyra closed the door, Zoe asked John, "What do we do now John?" John was still looking out the window and said, "For once in my life, I have no clue. I told Claire that I would get her here safely, which I did. I also promised Rebecca and the Rebels that we would free the city Elder Torres was using for the Brotherhood of Steel's F.O.B. while he was alive. Now that Torres is dead, they're practically leaderless. But they're still a threat without Torres Leading them." John was silent for a few moments before he said, "Get the advisors together and ask President Nate and Piper to join us if they're still here." Harold nodded his head and walked out. John then looked at Zoe and said, "Tell the Engineers to get the rest of those Pre-War Cruisers land ready as soon as possible."

"You got it." Said Zoe before leaving the room with Lee. Hyra looked over at John and said, "You want revenge for Mason?" John nodded his head and said, "Yes, but I also want the Brotherhood of Steel to be on our side as we take control of South Carolina and forge our Alliance with The Commonwealth Republic and we work westward to retame the Wastelands and bring an end to the Radiation hot spots." Hyra smiled as she wrapped her arms around John's Waist and the two looked at the City going about it's daily schedule.

It wasn't until around Dinner time when John met up with Mason's Council, President Nate and Piper, his companions that traveled with him to New Charleston, and Elder Maxson, Elder Alexanderson, and Elder Lemen were. John sat in the Mayor's seat as he said, "To start off, I would like to thank President Nate and The Commonwealth Republic in coming to our aid against Elder Torres and the attack he planned. I also would like to thank Elder Alexanderson, and Elder Lemen for joining our side against Elder Torres's insanity." Elder Alexanderson nodded his head as Elder Lemen said, "We're just sorry that Mayor Brown was lost during that battle."

"I agree with you, Elder Lemen. He was a good person in the end. He and I finally buried the Hatchet too. But on to business, Rachel and the Brotherhood of Steel Rebels are still fighting against the Brotherhood of Steel forces loyal to Elder Torres. Now that he's dead, there's a Power Vacuum, we need to assist Rachel and the Brotherhood of Steel Rebels win their Civil War." That was when one Advisor said, "We can have the three remaining Cruisers ready for land in a few days." John nodded his head and said, "Understood, tell them to make sure everything is perfect, we're going to need them for the assisting of the Brotherhood of Steel Rebels in the B.o.S.'s main base. This war was started at Elder Torres, and I will be the one who will finish it. Elder Alexanderson, Elder Lemen, if you two do not want to partake in this plan, you don't have too. You two can take your forces and go home."

Elder Alexanderson and Elder Lemen looked at each other, then back at John and Elder Lemen said, "We will help you free the town that Elder Torres's Loyalists have under occupation." John smiled as one of the Advisors for Mason stood up and said, "New Charleston also stands with you, Mayor Bertrand." Then Nate said, "You'll also have the support of The Commonwealth Republic." John nodded his head and said, "Okay everyone, let's create a plan of attack, we're going to war." (A.N.: Sorry for taking so long to update this story. Work and other stories have taken up most of my free time. I was also stuck on how to end this story. Luckily I came up with one. I will try my best to get all my old stories uploaded, if I can't think of any, I will have no choice but to discontinue them. For those who have waited for those stories to get Updated, I do apologize in advance if I have to discontinue them.
