And now story time.
Late in the afternoon, 'The Asami' pulls into Republic City harbor. After the yacht is docked, Chief Beifong, oversees Water Tribe criminals being loaded into trucks before noticing Team Avatar departing the luxury ship.
Beifong walks up to Korra, Ichiro and Mako, "Welcome home, Avatar." she said before adding sarcastically, "Thanks for starting a war."
"I didn't start a war." Korra said defensively.
"You did, honey." Ichiro whispered.
"Okay, maybe I did." Korra protested, "But it's more complicated than you're making it seem."
"No, it's not!" Genji said with a grin as he comes walking up, "Civil war baby!"
"Your way too excited for that." Ichiro said before turning to his mother, "What's the plan chief?"
"I need both you back on the beat." Beifong said, "There's going to be a Southern Water Tribe peace march tonight. I need you there to make sure things don't get out of hand."
"Me and Mako are on the case." Ichiro said with a two finger salute.
"I'll go too." Korra added, "The people of the South need to see that the Avatar is on their side in the fight against the Northern invaders."
"Great." Beifong said sarcastically, "That should calm them down."
"Oh, sounds like fun." Genji said with a manic grin, "I'm in!"
"You will come within an inch of that rally if I want a bloodbath." Beifong said immediately, "And no I don't want one." she then walks away.
"Maybe you should sit this out." Mako said once Beifong was out of earshot, "I just think having you there blatantly supporting one side will only make things worse. You could at least try to seem neutral."
"I'm not neutral! The North invaded my home." Korra protested, "The only reason I'm here is to get the Republic to send troops to help the South."
"Yeah, fuck the North like how I fucked their princess!" Genji said proudly, "I'll go ahead and arrange a meeting for us with President Raiko for you. Then I'll get something to eat, something to drink and something to fuck. And not in that particular order."
That evening at the Southern Water Tribe Cultural Center, with a statue of Sokka overlooking the compound. A huge number of people have congregated, while police riot vehicles have been employed to control the crowd.
The Southerners are being led by Korra riding atop Naga. Some of them are holding lit candles on paper lotuses, while others are holding signs, but the Northerners have come out in droves in support of their leader.
Overlooking these events from the crowd was Ichiro. The detective's attention was drawn away from the march when he heard a familiar voice shout, "Hey! Stop! Republic City Police!"
It was Mako, pursuing two suspects, a man presses a remote controller. Ichiro was about to join him in the pursuit but is stopped by a sudden explosion.
The center, which explodes as well, leaves everyone looking on in fear and shock.
Jumping into action kicking one down who was attempting to strike Mako from behind. Mako was surprised but quickly composed himself, throwing multiple fire blasts and kicks, but one of them retaliates with firebending sending Mako to the ground.
Making a quick decision, Ichiro used a airblast to send the attacker back, making him drop the remote, but giving them time to get into the getaway Satomobile.
"You alright?" Ichiro said, kneeling down next Mako, giving him a quick glance.
"Yeah, I'm alright." Mako said as he was pulled to his feet.
The two cops walks over to the remote and picks it up. The eyes narrowing when he saw it, "They were firebender's." he said, "The North might not be responsible for this."
The next day, Korra walks with Genji towards the office of the Republic President.
"I hope President Raiko listens to us." Korra said, a bit nervous.
"Don't worry about it my young apprentice." Genji said with hands in his pockets, "Even if he doesn't, we have options."
The presidents secretary let them into the office where President Raiko is waiting for them.
"Hello, Mr. President." Korra said, shaking hands with Raiko, "Sir, the Southern Water Tribe..."
"Just a second. Keep smiling." Raiko said, she flinch awkwardly as the photo's the secretary is taking, "Now, how can I help the Avatar and the prince of Republic City?"
"Unalaq's troops have invaded the South." Korra said, "We need you to send the United Forces to help."
"I'm very concerned by what's happening down there." Raiko said, "But I don't think it's the Republic's place to interfere with internal Water Tribe matters."
"Unalaq isn't even the rightful ruler of the Water Tribe." Korra argued, "He lied his way onto the Northern throne."
"But the Republic might already be involved in this conflict." Genji said, "The North might have attacked our cultural center last night."
"Might?" Korra said, turning to her teacher, "Who else would it be but the Northerners?"
"The Fire Sages, nobody would expect them." Genji said putting his fist in his open palm, "A lot of people can profit from this war..."
"Now, now." Raiko said quickly, "I know that when you're young or get to a certain age, it's hard to keep perspective..."
"You're the one who's lost perspective." Korra said accusingly, "I'm trying to save my tribe, and you're taking pictures."
"Sending troops is not something I can do at this time, but I promise I will work with Unalaq and the South for a diplomatic solution... Unless." the president said, a opportunistic glean in his eye.
"Your trying to profit from this situation as well, don't you?" Korra said angrily.
Korra was about to say something, but Genji held her back leading her out of the office.
"That's why I never bother with politics." Genji said shaking his head.
"Your too good of a person to be a politician." she said when they walked towards the entrance of City Hall.
"Now that is a good joke!" he said with a laugh, "We don't need the President to go to the South, we just need the troops. We're going with option two, let's go meet with Iroh, he can help us."
"And Asami can sell some of her mecha tanks. We only need Varrick to ship them South." Korra said, "She'll be making money for her company and she'll be helping to defeat Unalaq. I just don't understand why it's so hard to get Republic City to support the South."
"Eh, fuck people." Genji said casually as he looked at his watch, "Now if you excuse me, I got to plan something for tomorrow."
That afternoon, Korra is pacing through Ichiro's office inside the police station where the young man himself is sitting at his desk looking over a few files.
"I can't believe the President is doing nothing!" Korra said agitated, "H-He doesn't even care!"
"Maybe he doesn't or maybe he does." Ichiro said, trying to assure her, "But he can't just tell his people to go fight a battle at the South Pole that has nothing to do with them."
"How could you take his side?" Korra said exasperated, coming to a sudden stop.
"I'm not taking his side." Ichiro said looking up from his files.
"Well, you're not helping me!" Korra said frustrated, "I'm trying to get troops to the South. What are you doing?"
"I'm doing my job." Ichiro said gesturing to the papers.
"Well, excuse me, detective." Korra said, her sarcasm mixed with anger, "Don't let me stand in the way of you writing tickets. I'm just trying to save the world."
"...And you think I'm not trying to help?" Ichiro said with a raised eyebrow, "I'm investigating the attack on the Cultural Center."
"It was the North obviously." Korra said, "Who else?"
"Something doesn't make sense about this bombing. I just don't buy that the Northern Water Tribe was behind it." Ichiro said with a frown, "A lot of people can profit from this war..."
"Your sounding just like Genji!" Korra said throwing her arms up, "Next your going to claim it was the Fire Sages."
"...That one actually hurt." he muttered.
This seemed to snap Korra out of her anger, as her eyes looked at her boyfriend. "...Sorry." she muttered.
"It's okay." Ichiro said, standing up from his seat and walking over to her.
"No, it's not." Korra said shaking her head, "I shouldn't let out my frustrations on you..." she let out a gasp when she felt back being pressed against the wall and pinned there by Ichiro.
"And I already told you." he said, cupping her chin before placing a kiss on her lips, "It's okay."
The following morning, inside the police headquarters, where Raiko was angrily shouting at Ichiro in his office as he sat behind his desk.
"How did this Cultural Center attack happen right under your nose?" he said to Ichiro, "And why haven't you arrested the Northerners responsible?"
"We're working on it, sir." Ichiro said calmly.
"Well, work harder!" the president said, "If you don't get any results soon, I'm going to find someone who can."
"And there is your problem. There is no one else." Ichiro said confidently as suddenly the door opened and Mako comes in, holding a dossier in his hand, "Mako, what is it?", standing up from his seat.
"I got a break in the bombing case." Mako said walking up to his desk, "I I.D.'d the guy I saw at the scene."
"That's great, Mako." Ichiro said, "What did you find?"
"This is the guy I saw sneaking out of the building right before the explosions." Mako explained, taking a picture from the dossier, "He's a member of the Agni Kais. Someone must have hired him to make it look like Northerners attacked the Cultural Center."
"Okay, Okay." Ichiro nodded, "Did you learn anything about that remote control we found at the scene? That's gotta be the key to finding out who's really responsible."
"Not yet." Mako said, "But I'm working on it."
"Good, keep it up and you'll make detective by the end of the month." Ichiro said, "Also keep me posted."
"You got it commissioner!" Mako said with a salute to both Ichiro and the president before leaving the office.
"See?" Ichiro said smugly as he turned to the president, "See? We're working on it. Now if you'll excuse me."
Raiko frowned at him but continued, "...One more thing. You're dating the Avatar, right?"
"That I am." Ichiro said proudly looking at the picture on his desk of him and Korra, "Not sure why my dating life is of any concern."
"It isn't." President Raiko as he stood up, "I'm concerned that she might be getting some bad advice from Varrick."
Ichiro's eyes widen a bit, glancing a bit uneasily, "You wouldn't happen to know if they're plotting anything that might compromise the security of Republic City, would you, head detective? Let me remind you that you've sworn an oath. You're a man of the law before anything else."
Meanwhile over at the Republic Docks, Korra and Genji walking over a United Forces ship, being meet half-way on the deck by General Iroh.
"Iroh Junior!" Genji said happily, giving him what he had called him a bro handshake before giving the general a side hug, "My man!"
"It has been a while, Grunkle Genji." Iroh said, nod respectfully before turning to Korra, "It's good to see the both of you again. What can I do?"
"The South needs military support before Unalaq wipes them out completely, but the President is refusing to give the order." Korra explained the situation, "So I decided to come to you directly."
"I see." Iroh said, stroking his wide chin, "Well, suppose I were to take the fleet South on some routine training maneuvers. And let's say we were to accidentally run into a hostile Northern blockade. We'd have no choice but to defend ourselves, wouldn't we?"
"I guess you wouldn't." Korra said with a smile, "Thank you!"
"That's why I love this boy." Genji said with a grin, punching him against the shoulder, "Now I owe you one."
"Actually, I believe that makes two you owe me." Iroh pointed out as he rubbed his shoulder, "We might need more back-up. You should talk to the Fire Lord. My mother and grandfather have always been good friends with the Avatar, and the Southern Water Tribe. I'm sure they'll be willing to help."
"More help would be great." Genji said before his eyes widen, "...I know another place where we can find help. They should have gathered there around this time of year."
"What are you talking about?" Korra said curiously.
"You'll see. But if all works out, it will be Unalaq and the North that will be completely wiped out." Genji said with a grin, "But you need to get to the Fire Nation. You can use my boat. No, not 'The Asami', won a speedboat last night."
That afternoon outside the Police Station, Korra up to the stairs to tell her boyfriend what she was planning to do. But before she could reach the doors, she saw her boyfriend at his car, putting a box with his work stuff in the backseat of his car.
"...Ichiro?" she said confused as she approached him, "What happened?"
"Had a talk with President Raiko. He knew I knew that you where up to something, but I wouldn't tell him." Ichiro explained, "He gave me an ultimatum, either tell or lose my job. I guess you can figure out what I chose."
"That does it." Korra said, turning around, "I'm going to have a very strong word with him."
"What? No, Korra." Ichiro said, grapping her wrist, "Don't. It's not worth it."
"Yes, it is!" Korra shouted trying to get out of his grasp, "He fired my man! So I'm going to set fire to his office."
He pulled her towards him, her hand coming to rest on his chest before he calmed her down by placing a kiss on her lips.
She melted into it, placing her now freed arm around his neck as his hands rested on her hips. When they finally parted they held onto each other.
"Korra, I appreciate the gesture, but we have more important things to do. We got to safe your family." Ichiro said, "So, what is the plan?"
"I am going to the Fire Nation." Korra said, "That's what I was coming to tell you."
"I'm coming with you." Ichiro said with a shrug, "Not like I got anything better to do."
At the end of that afternoon as evening was setting in, the elevator opens at the penthouse above Genji's club, and Beifong stepped into the darkened living room.
"Chirayus?" Beifong called out as she looked around the darkened living room, "Where are..."
But suddenly the light's switched on bathing the room in light and showing off decorations used in celebration of one's birth day. From behind a large stack of presents, one of them being a on scale stuffed baby sky bison plushie toy, came Genji wearing a celebration hat.
"Surprise!" Genji shouted before popping something in his hand to throw streamers all over the floor, "Happy birthday, Lin Beifong!"
"...It's not my birthday." Beifong said in her usual stoic tone as she crossed her arms.
"I know, I know. But I missed the first fifty, so I needed to catch up." Genji said with a smile before noticing her look, "Oh, I see you spotted the baby sky bison. That's what I would have given you when you turned one."
But his grin faded when he saw his unamused daughter glaring at him. "Right, maybe something for later in life." he said before he disappeared between the large stacks of presents. Before long he comes riding around the presents on a red tricycle, "This is what I would have given you for your third birthday!" he said with a smile.
But while Genji had a big smile on his face, the look Beifong was giving him would have even over taxed his healing factor under the amped up effect of a Shashou Elixir.
"You think..." Beifong said in a low whisper, "That showering me with presents. That that would make everything alright? That we would be father and daughter? A happy little family? You think you can buy me!?"
"No, but I thought it would be a good first..." Genji began looking dejected when an angry Beifong turned around and back to the elevator.
Without another word, Beifong gave him one last glare before the doors closed, leaving Genji all alone in his apartment.
