Alex3600: hey! Welcome to the first actual chapter of Ellentine! Alex is my OC, and they are full of sass. Please enjoy this chapter! Also, sorry it took so long, I wrote out the first 2 chapters (this one and the next one) and am working on the 3rd one, however, typing it up takes a while, so I don't have a schedule. And now, with all that aside, enjoy chapter one of Ellentine!
Shouta Aizawa enjoyed patrolling, away from Present Mic, away from the UA students. He didn't expect anything to be happening, after all, who does anything illegal in a back alleyway? This is why when he saw the flashing lights coming from far away, he got over there quickly. He hopped across the buildings with ease, barely stopping to take a breath. When he got there, his eyes widened as he saw an adult with jewelry, most likely stolen, place it near an apparent campsite of some sort. The man tried to walk away, but something grabbed him. Shouta heard a voice snarl
"I don't tolerate people framing me for crimes I didn't commit" and with that, the speaker appeared behind the guy. The next thing Shouta knew, the man was wrapped in vines, unable to get out.
:::::::
Alex learned at a very young age about death. Their parents had died about a year after they manifested their quirk. They got put into a foster care system. When they turned 10, they got kicked out because "nobody will want a 10-year-old." They grew aloof from society, thanks to living on the streets, where, any sign of fear, could mean death.
When a burglar tried to frame them for theft, Alex lept into action. They grabbed their dead mother's locket around their neck and set to work. Once the man thought he was safe, he started to head to the road. Alex called on the wind to sweep him up. They hid themself using the light and snuck up behind the man.
"I don't tolerate people framing me for crimes I didn't commit" they growled as they appeared behind the man.
They started to grow some vines around the man, trapping him in place. Alex grabbed their duct tape and an old sock and gagged the man. They created some fire on their pointer finger. They bent down to ignite the vines, making sure the fire spread slowly. Alex ungagged the man just enough to ask him where the jewelry came from, searching his mind with shadows.
"Where did this jewelry come from?"
"The store in Hosu City"
Alex knew he lied, he blinked too much and his mind pulled out the image of the store, inside and out.
"I also don't tolerate liars," Alex said as they sent the jewelry back to the store.
They tightened the man's gag before sending him to jail using the shadows. They started to pack up their camp when they were wrapped up in something.
"What in hell?"
they inquired before seeing red eyes
"ah, I assume you are Eraserhead? This must be your capture scarf" they said, grinning.
Eraserhead looked taken aback by the comment. Alex looked around before asking
"What do you want from me?"
"You know what you did was vigilantism, I could arrest you for that," said Eraserhead
"But you wouldn't," Alex said back matter-of-factly.
They started to struggle to get out, but couldn't get out. Eraserhead pulled the scarf, carrying Alex, along as he hopped across the rooftops.
:::::::
Shouta's mind was racing, who was this kid?
"Kid, why are you alone on the streets?" he asked, not expecting an answer
"Because the dumb foster care system I was put in kicked me out" the kid answered, sounding annoyed.
'What is up with this kid?' Shouta wondered, the kid didn't seem to be any older than his students.
"Kid, how old are you?"
"My name is Alex, not 'Kid' and I'm 16" Alex responded, a grunting sound followed it, most likely Alex trying to get out of the scarf.
Shouta grinned, Alex was a lot like him, stubborn as all get out. As he leaped across the rooftops, his mind started to wonder towards UA
'I could probably ask Nedzu if Alex can come and train at the school, maybe even become a student there' and as he thought this, he heard a loud grunt from behind him
"Hell no, I'm not going to some fancy school for heroes," said Alex, clearly mad. Shouta stopped in his tracks and looked confused, how had Alex known what he was thinking about?
"ki-Alex, how did you know what I was thinking?" Shouta asked. Alex laughed
"Wow Eraserhead, never thought anyone would ask me that aloud, much less a pro-hero who teaches kids my age"
Shota was speechless, how had Alex known that?
"Also, just so you know, I am non-binary" he heard Alex say as he started to leap.
When he got to the school, Shuota made sure that Alex was unable to escape his scarf before heading into Principal Nedzu's office.
"Aizawa, is that you? Can you help me? I'm a bit stuck" a small voice said, Shouta looked around until he found the rodent
"I have a kid I'm interested in joining UA," said Shouta while pulling Nedzu out of where he got stuck.
"Well, they would need a parent or guardian to approve them coming here," said Nedzu, pulling up the form.
"How old are they?"
"16"
"Name?"
"Alex"
Nedzu sat there filling in that information before asking
"Birthday?" as he said that, Alex came bursting in
"October 7th," they said, Nedzu smiled
"And who are your parents?"
"Dead. I've been on the streets for 6 years, an orphan for 10"
Shouta walked out to see his capture scarf tangled up in vines. He cut away the vines and put it back on.
"Well, we need a guardian to sign off on this," said Nedzu as Shouta walked in
"Ah, Aizawa! You could sign off on Alex going here." as he heard that, he sighed but signed it nothing less.
"Okay, so for now, Alex can stay in class 1A's dorms while they are all gone for a small break, the test will be tomorrow, get some rest and good luck," said Nedzu
:::::::
Alex grinned as they set up camp in the forest behind the UA dorms for class 1A. They were used to the streets, so the forest was a great change in scenery. They used some grape vines to make a hammock for the night and grew some raspberries and blackberries for dinner. Alex heard their name being called and climbed up a tree, waiting for it to stop. Then someone else joined in the hunt for Alex, the second voice was louder than the first. Alex covered their ears, staying still. They were no strangers to hiding, they did it a lot before getting kicked out of foster care. Something caught Alex's eye, they looked and saw who was making the loud noise. A man in bright yellow was walking around, his quirk was probably something to do with amplifying his voice. The man asked the person behind him
"Are you sure the little listener went this way?"
"Yes," The reply was instant. Alex saw Eraserhead and knew, chances were, they were looking for them. Alex hid using light and snuck up behind the 2 men
"Looking for me?" they asked, and while the men were distracted, they wrapped them up in vines. Eraserhead activated his quirk, looking around.
"Damn Shota, you said the listener's quirk was powerful, but I didn't expect this!" said the yellow man. Alex grinned at the compliment
"Thanks" they grinned. After a little while, they choose to let the 2 men down and show themself.
"I would say sorry, but I'm not sorry about wrapping you 2 up in vines, because, for all I knew, you could have come to hurt me" Alex shrugged as they said that like it was just a way of life. They popped a raspberry in their mouth, splitting it open with their teeth, letting the juice coat their mouth and throat. Alex gestured to the berries as if to ask if they wanted one, the yellow man nodded, so they tossed him 4 berries, 2 blackberries, and 2 raspberries. They searched Eraserheads mind to find out what the yellow man's name was, all they got was his hero name: Present Mic, and his quirk: Voice, meaning he can amplify his voice to a certain extent. They looked at Present Mic and said
"So, Present Mic, what brings you to my stretch of the woods?"
"How do you know my hero name?" Alex didn't say anything, knowing that one way or another, he would find out eventually, but not now, Alex was sure of that.
"We thought you were going to stay in the dorms, they are nice and warm, as well as commutable," Eraserhead said
"Well, old habits die hard, I guess," Alex replied, popping another berry in their mouth. The 2 adults looked at them, Present Mic smiled while Eraserhead shook his head.
"That sounds like something you would say Sho" Present Mic said with a grin. Alex could normally notice people when they had sadness going on inside from a loved one dying, after all, they had a little bit inside them, but the one in the 2 adults was big as if they had missed someone for years. Alex decided to find out what, but not right then, for now, it's time to rest. Alex climbed up to their hammock and fell asleep.
The nightmares weren't as bad, just a bit of poking here, prodding there, and a bit of the knife they had grown to despise for years, a white knife, coated in their blood. Alex always had carried a knife on them, but a black one with red flame patterns, courtesy of an old friend. They woke up and noted the time, it was about 3 A.M. They grabbed their locket, holding the cold metal until their heart stopped beating so much. Alex scrambled down the tree and started to walk, but saw the 2 adults, no, there was a 3rd, a spirit. Alex knew 3 AM was the best time to find spirits. They smiled, knowing the spirit was watching the adults. It came over to Alex and said in a silvery voice only they could hear
"Hello, Alex. I hope you don't mind my friends, they got worried about you, so they decided to stay. Honestly, though, I don't blame them. Normally I enjoy watching them, but tonight, I noticed something. You. When you went to sleep, you started to shake, muttering something about, well, I don't remember exactly what. But they decided to stay the night, to keep you safe."
Alex nodded, knowing that the ghost was speaking the truth, for some reason, when someone was speaking the truth, Alex could normally tell by their heartbeat, but with ghosts, it was the air, if they lied, it got slightly colder. Of course, not many people knew that. Nor were people as prone to temperature change as they were.
"But, they have never been able to see me. Some nights, I would go with Shota or Hizashi to make sure they were safe, and I would help him with some intuition of sorts. They never knew it was me. I miss them a lot, but I don't want to see them die."
Alex felt bad for the spirit, so they asked
"Do you have a message for them that I could give to them?" the spirit shook his head
"No" Alex nodded
"Well, it was nice to meet you. What should I call you?"
"Just call me, a friend" Alex nodded their thanks and headed over to a pile of sticks they set up the night before. They grabbed a rock, a squirrel, gutted and cleaned of course, and lit the sticks on fire, keeping the smoking to a minimum. They shaped the rock into a pot, then pulled some condensation out of the air to put in the pot. They then started to skin the squirrel before putting it in the pot. They planned on pulling the bones out in a couple of minutes when it got warm, to put in it for some broth. It was around 5 AM and the adults were still sleeping, not that Alex minded. They added some spices after taking the bones out of the squirrel, well, using the water to get them out. They started to make some bowls when Eraserhead woke up. He looked around and saw Present Mic and blushed before seeing Alex making bowls and spoons.
"What are you doing?"
"Making breakfast, it's not much, but it should hold me over until noon" Eraserhead looked confused, so Alex said
"I normally eat some sunflower seeds that I roast in the morning then, to get my energy up." They offered some of the stew/soup to Eraserhead, who took it and tried it. The next thing Alex and Eraserhead knew, Present Mic woke up and walked over
"Morning little listener, whatcha got there?" Alex handed him a bowl before he said
"I thought you would be confused as to why we stayed?" Alex shrugged
"A Friend told me why, you didn't have to stay you know, I was fine" That's when Eraserhead shook his head
"Some of my students have trouble sleeping, so I normally make sure they are okay. I did the same to you because you were in a new environment" Alex thanked him, then told them to help themselves to the stew/soup. Alex walked over to a sunlit area and grew a big sunflower, it started to grow seeds, and Alex pulled off the ripe ones to start roasting, which they did in their hand. Their internal clock said it was about 9 AM.
"Shouldn't you two be headed up to the school? I mean, what is this, the Hunger Games?" the 2 adults looked at them
"Damn, never read the hunger games before?" Present Mic nodded
"I just so happen to teach English at the school, and that book happened to be on my list of reads for some of my classes." Eraserhead looked annoyed before saying
"I have not though, not that it interests me to read a book titled the hunger games" Alex gave him a stare
"I will drag you to the library and force you to read it" Present Mic took Eraserhead by the shoulder and started to walk him back to the dorms. Alex sighed, looking at the embers from the fire they had made for breakfast.
They quenched the last of the fire before turning to see if anyone was there. When they decided it was safe, they activated their shapeshifting and watched as their arms turned back into the mess of flesh that it had become. Alex couldn't even tell anymore whether the marks were from the foster-care experiments, or from the ever-changing bruises they kept on getting. They activated shape-shift again and watched as the skin cells became recognizable flesh. They decided to clean up camp and get ready for the day.
:::::::
Shouta waved Hizashi ahead of him and hid behind a tree. Alex seemed like they were hiding something, but he couldn't put his finger on it. Their arms seemed to ripple as they became, well, not arms
'what the hell is that?' Alex seemed to be studying it, pondering something. Shouta realized that, when he used his quirk on Alex, their arms didn't turn into what they looked like then. Secretly he was glad that their arms didn't turn into what he was witnessing. Alex seemed to be tired of seeing their arm-things, the flesh rippled and turned back into arms.
'So, they can shapeshift? Good to know, maybe I could ask them to help me prank Hizashi' He slowly started to leave, when a voice called out
"You know, if you were trying to be sneaky, don't hide upwind of me. Now, I have a hunch who you are, however, I don't care who you are, don't tell anybody what you saw. Alright coffee-man?" yup, definitely talking to Shouta.
He headed back up to the school, longing for his sleeping bag. When he got to the test-viewing room, he saw Hizashi holding his sleeping bag. As he slipped into it, he put his arms through the arm-holes. Hizashi giggled, Shouta blushed, before lightly smacking him on the arm. Nedzu came in with a police officer a couple of minutes later.
"Hello Eraserhead"
Shouta nodded his hello, but not saying anything.
"Alex should be here soon, yes?" the officer paused after saying Alex's name as if he didn't like it. Shouta was starting to dislike him.
"Yes," the caterpillar-like man said. The officer nodded his thanks, before turning to the screen. Alex walked into the frame, something in their ear. They pulled out a small blue box, clicked some buttons, then put it back in their pocket.
"So, she still has that atrocious music player" Shouta heard the officer muttered. He was really starting to regret being here. He was tired, but Hizashi caught his eye and signed. What the hell did the cop say?
Shouta signed back. Something about the blue thing being a music player, and Alex being female. He watched as Hizashi started to glare at the cop. He loved how protective Hizashi was, but sometimes it was unnecessary for that moment. That didn't mean Shouta wasn't glaring at the cop either. In fact, Shouta was silently shaking with rage but pretended to be cold
'Who the hell misgenders someone on purpose' Yes, he was sure it was intentional, after all, Nedzu would have told the cop Alex's pronouns before walking into the room. Shouta turned his attention back to Alex.
Nedzu explained the rules, before sending Alex out to complete the physical portion of the exams. Alex took a couple of steps before a black mass opened up underneath them. They didn't notice it until they stepped into it. They shrugged, not having a care in the world, and fell, looking at the camera while doing it.
:::::::
Alex took a deep breath before they fell too far into the portal, knowing that the farther down they went, the less oxygen they would get. They pulled up a light image of what was happening in the control room. Without sound, of course. The first thing they noticed was the police officer, looking smugly at the screen as Eraserhead shouted (assumed)
"NO, DAMN IT!" as he activated his quirk, Alex was a bit disappointed. They started to worry about the locket around their neck. They knew that Erasure only worked when looking at the quirk holder, which was behind Eraserhead.
"Come on dude, think about how his quirk works." Alex knew he couldn't hear them, but they still were trying to help their favorite hero. Alex knew what they had to do, after all, they couldn't get out of the void-like portal area with shadow jumping. This was a void, with no shadows, only darkness with a little light. Alex could use the light to their advantage though. They willed it to come into their hand, in a certain form, sharp enough to cut through shadows, and take them to where they needed to go.
The light pooled before turning into a sword, a red sword at that. Alex grinned
"Hell yeah, that bastard will not know what hit 'em." They slashed through the air, focusing on cutting through the darkness behind the cop. The cut appeared, big enough for Alex to slip through. They went through it quietly, then closed it with another cutting motion. They snuck up behind the man, and hit him, hard, on the head, with a closed fist. The man turned around and Alex punched his face.
"Listener, what are you doing?" Alex kept punching him, hard. The man finally fell over in defeat. Alex grimaced
"Stay down on the ground, stay down on the ground you motherfucker" The man didn't get up. Alex went through his contacts on his phone and his memories.
"Damn, her, I would have thought she kicked the bucket by now." All 3 adults looked at them, surprised. It took a minute for the adults to register what just happened. Present Mic grinned, elbowing Eraserhead in the side
"Remind you of someone?" Eraserhead sank into his capture scarf, hiding his face, as Alex went to look around the dark room. Eraserhead looked at them
"Uh, what're you doing?" He asked, confused.
"Looking for some shadows and a trash can."
"Why?" All the adults asked. Present Mic looked around
"There are shadows everywhere in here, why do you need to look for one?" Alex grabbed a trash can from the corner, making a basket out of vines to hold it in.
"I want to find the biggest one," They said, gesturing to the body of the fake cop. Eraserhead looked at Alex, then the fake cop, then shook his head
"I'm coming with you" Alex started to protest, but before they could, he cut them off "You can't argue with me on this, I've made up my mind"
"Yeah, when Sho makes up his mind, it's made up, no changing it." Present Mic affectionately hugged Eraserhead, grinning. Eraserhead looked bored, but it wasn't hard to tell his caring nature, even if it was hidden under all the masks he had. Alex took his hand, causing Present Mic to beam happily, and took him over to the corner, with the trash-can and fake cop already over there.
"The way this works is you'll feel cold since we're going through shadows, but then, since I want to cause this fake cop pain, we'll be falling through the air, from the ceiling. I'll slow our fall, the fake cops, however, he'll be fine falling onto the floor from a couple of feet in the air." Alex looked at Eraserhead as he nodded. They closed their eyes, picturing the image from the man's mind. Then they willed the shadows in the corner of the ceiling to open as they willed the shadows they were in now to take the 3 people through.
They felt the cold air hit their face immediately after. Alex opened their eyes and slowed them and Eraserhead down. The fake cop hit the ground with a thud.
'Ahh, the sound of bodies hitting the floor' Alex stood still, taking in their surroundings, before grabbing the man by the hair and dragging him across the floor. Alex started to feel nauseous, before quickly grabbing the trash can they had brought, momentarily forgetting about the man, and vomited. When they stopped, they groaned in pain from the acid reflux vomiting sometimes caused them. They sat the bucket down, and grabbed the man's hair again, quickly going to the desk and pulling him upright.
"Hello, Ma'am? You lost an employee" It took all of Alex's willpower not to shake when the employee turned around. 'It was her' Alex shuddered internally as they remembered the knife sliding down their arm, blood pouring out, and- no, they're safe, they have been for about 6 years now. She can do anything to them especially since Eraserhead is behind them. The lady smiled at Alex
"Thank you so much for returning one of our beloved employees to us! Where did you find him, if I may ask?" Alex wanted to punch this woman in the face but calmed themself before saying
"He was on the streets, passed out, most likely from alcohol." Alex opted to lie to the woman. Eraserhead looked ready to interject, but Alex shot him a look that said 'I know what I'm doing' and he backed off, staying close though, just in case things got physical.
"Oh my! He really needs to lay off the alcohol, I'll be sure to tell him that, but working with kids, it just gets to some people's heads, you know?" Alex started seeing red, how dare this bitch make fun of working with kids, she never even cared about the kids she was told to keep an eye on! Alex could feel the anger radiating from Eraserhead, but he kept his cool. Alex smiled cooly before turning, looking at Eraserhead, and sighing.
"Can we leave?" Eraserhead looked at them, his gaze soft, but still firm, as he nodded. Alex grabbed the trash can and went to make the sword out of light, before stopping, turning around, and flipping the woman off. Eraserhead looked away from the scene. Alex went to make the sword again, this time cutting through the air with enough room for 2 people to get through. Alex took a step into the cut, motioning Eraserhead to follow, as they headed back to the room they had left Present Mic and the rodent in.
