Chapter 3: The First Meeting
Tonks stumbled over the crooked cobblestones of Grimmauld Place, with Mad Eye Moody in tow. Tonks took extra care while navigating over the uneven ground, not wanting to face plant in front of her mentor. Moody would certainly never let her live it down if she did.
They were a bit early for the meeting but figured that they should just come straight there from the ministry. Tonks didn't mind, it would give her time to chat and catch up with Sirius.
After being viciously accosted by Walburga Black, Moody and Tonks made their way to find Sirius in the kitchen. Tonks surveyed the kitchen, she was t sure why, but she immediately noted that Remus was not there with Sirius.
"Wotcher, Sirius!" Tonks greeted him.
"Hey, how are you guys?" Sirius asked, kindly.
In response, Moody grumbled on about new ministry sanctions, while Tonks animatedly discussed the weekly highlights in the auror department.
Soon, other members of the order began to show up as well.
Tonks was talking with Molly Weasley, when she saw Remus and Sirius talking in the corner. Eventually, She made her way over to them. Tripping over one of the tables in the large kitchen.
"Are you okay?" Sirius asked, while laughing.
"I think I'll live!" Tonks told him.
"How are you Remus?" Tonks turn to him.
"Ah- Good, good." He replied curtly.
Tonks nodded kindly, but couldn't shake the feeling that he didn't want to be near her.
Sirius and Tonks talked for several more minutes until Moody announced that it was time to start the meeting. Moody wasted no time, jumping straight into discussing the most recent updates about Voldemort and his movements.
Eventually, Moody asked Snape for an update. "The dark lord is convinced that knowing the second half of the prophecy will help him beat Harry Potter. It appears he's very determined to get it, I suspect he has already handpicked death eaters to help him with this." Snape Explained.
Moody continued. Explaining to everyone what the next few weeks would entail.
Several other people spoke, giving updates to the group.
Soon, Moody pasted the assignments out to the order members. Tonks could see Sirius seething in his chair. He hated not being able to do anything to help. Tonks looked at her assignment. Her two main assignments were the department of mysteries and the McNair residence. She looked at her partner, it was Remus. She instantly worried it would bother him. He seemed kinda cold towards her earlier and she wondered if she had done something to upset him.
Tonks sighed, tucking the parchment in her hand into her pocket. soon, the meeting started to wrap up.
"Cousin! Stay, have a drink with me" Sirius exclaimed, as people started to make their way out of the kitchen.
Tonks smiled at him, she couldn't say no.
"Okay, I'll stay!" Tonks told him.
Tonks, Remus, and Sirius made their way up to the back parlor above the kitchen.
Sirius poured each of them a drink before settling down.
"So, Tonks. You get a good assignment?" Sirius asked, vicariously.
"Ah, I got department of mysteries, and the McNair home. It's actually, with Remus." Tonks said.
Remus nodded in agreement.
Sirius smiled. He wouldn't tell them, but he had actually been the one to suggest the pairing to Mad Eye.
"The department of mysteries and the McNair' aught to be good." Sirius responded.
Tonks looked over at remus, she hoped he was okay with the pairing, see as he had barely spoken two words to her all night. but yet he could talk just fine with everyone else. She thought.
"Don't you think Moony?" Sirius asked his friend.
"Mhhhmmm." Remus murmured, as he sipped his drink.
'Why does he call him Moony? The names they had for each other were so odd', she thought.
Tonks watched as Sirius and Remus played chess for awhile, but, she was pretty sure that Remus had let Sirius win.
Eventually, Tonks had to say goodnight to them. Leaving for her flat, waving over her shoulder as she left.
After she left, Sirius turned to Remus.
"Well, looks like you have some dates coming up." Sirius said, laughing at himself.
"It's work." Remus replied, slightly annoyed. 'Why, does he always have to be this way?!?' Remus thought to himself.
"Ask her on a real date then." Sirius continued.
Remus was so annoyed with him. He pressed his lips together, trying not to snap at his friend.
"No" Remus said, coldly.
"So, you don't think she's attractive?" Sirius questioned him.
For a second Remus just stared at him, his friend was clearly enjoying himself.
Finally, Remus spoke.
"What- what does that have to do with anything." Remus murmured.
"Okay, so that's a yes." Sirius said, chuckling.
Remus rolled his eyes.
Deep down he knew Sirius was right. He sighed in defeat, knowing it didn't matter.
