Chapter 5: MOONY?
Remus sat waiting for Tonks in the department of mysteries. He had his journal spread across his lap, he was finishing up an entry.
'I enjoy her presence. And, it scares me. I have tried to ignore how I feel about her, as our pairing wouldn't be appropriate at all, and it would never work. yet, I still find myself thinking about her. I promised Sirius I would make more of an attempt to be friendly with Tonks, I definitely don't want to offend her. After all, it's not her fault that I think she's fit or something. And, there is no reason I can't still be friends with Tonks, and be polite to her.'
Finished, Remus closed his journal, and sighed as he leaned back again he marble stone wall behind him.
Just then, Like clockwork, Tonks emerged from the lift, walking across the marble floor.
"Hey Remus." She greeted him kindly.
"Hi Tonks, how are you?" Remus responded.
"I'm pretty good. Thank you." She responded.
Remus smiled and nodded.
Tonks came over to sit next to Remus, putting her traveling cloak on the floor as a cushion.
Tonks sighed as she sat down, taking out a copy of the daily prophet.
"Did you see?" She asked. Turning the page so Remus could see it.
The headline read: Dumbledore's Tower Of Lies. Will It All Come Crumbling Down?
Remus Scoffed.
"Yes, Sirius and I saw that earlier. Utterly Rubbish if you ask me." He responded.
The Prophet had clearly wasted no time, and were already attacking anyone who claimed that Voldemort had returned.
"I guess, I just don't understand why they say this. because the story was told from a 14-year-old that somehow makes it less valid? what reason would Harry or Dumbledore have to lie about this?" Tonks questioned.
"Well, I think it's probably much easier for people to convince themselves that Dumbledore and Harry are just lying, or simply incorrect, than it is to actually except what's going on. It's just easier to think that Dumbledore is lying. Because, the alternative is too ghastly to consider. A lot of people lost a lot the last time Voldemort was in power, and I just don't think people are ready to except that he's back again." Remus explained.
Tonks couldn't help but admire his insight. 'He's a very profound person.' Tonks thought.
"I suppose your right, Remus. It's a hard truth to except." Tonks added, sadly.
together they skimmed the rest of the paper, commenting on topics they found interesting.
" I can't believe they forced Dumbledore from the Wizengamot, that's so wrong! Tonks exclaimed.
"I don't think there's much thats right about the ministry right now." Remus added.
'See, this is nice. Chatting with Remus was easy." Tonks thought to herself.
Just then, Remus scoffed, looking at a picture of Percy Weasley and the minister of magic.
"Did you hear what happened between him and his dad, Remus? She asked him.
"Yeah Arthur told me, it's such a shame." Remus replied.
Tonks just shook her head. Percy had completely abandoned his family to side with the ministry, all over a fancy new promotion. Tonks thought it was so disloyal of him.
The whole idea of it really really bothered her.
After finishing looking through the paper the pair sat quietly, making sure that no one else was coming or going from the department.
Eventually, Tonks broke the silence. "Does it feel the same way as last time Remus? Do you think that we are going to war again?" She asked, concerned.
She had been too young to remember much of the first war and didn't know what to expect this time around. She could read about the last war all day, but she was sure she wasn't really prepared...
"Mmmm, yeah. It feels very familiar. like last time." Remus said solemnly.
Tonks sighed.
Trying to change the subject Tonks decided to talk about something else.
"You know, I was wondering. Sirius and you have nicknames for each other, did James have one too?"
Remus smiled thinking about his late friend.
"Yeah, he was Prongs. He was an Animagus too." Remus said, fondly.
"Was he a stag?" She asked, interested.
Remus nodded. "Yeah he was."
"Wait, are you one too? What does Moony mean? She laughed a little. "What do you turn into a werewolf or something? She added, chuckling.
Remus gasped a little, in shock that she had just said that.
"Yes" he said, quietly.
Tonks cursed herself. "Oh shit Remus. I'm so sorry, I wouldn't have made a joke about it if I had known. I'm a complete tosser."
"No, it's okay. I should have told you before we started working together."
Tonks smiled. "Well, it was your business, so it's fine."
"Don't feel like you have to be so accommodating. It's okay if it bothers you. It kinda bothers me." Remus said.
"It doesn't bother me. I mean, I feel really badly for you, but it doesn't bother me."
Tonks explained.
Remus nodded. 'Great! She Pity's you! That's just great.' He thought.
After a little longer sitting in awkward silence, Tonks pulled out her MP3 player to listen to music.
"Want to listen?" She asked him, handing him a small headphone. He agreed, nodding.
Tonks moves closer to him so the headphones could reach.
"What singer is this?" Remus asked her.
"This is a muggle band, it's called Nirvana."
"Never heard of them." He explained.
"They are very popular right now! I can't believe you've never heard of them, Remus."
She added.
Remus chuckled.
The pair continued listening to music for another hour or so.
Remus tried to adjust himself against the wall, trying to get more comfortable. The full moon was in a few days and he was definitely starting to feel the effects of it.
Remus looked at his watch, it was past 3am, meaning it was almost time to leave.
Tonks sighed, looking over at Remus.
"It's about time to leave" Tonks said, looking at her own watch.
Remus looked at her. He figured she wanted to leave as soon as possible. He didn't blame her, he'd want to leave too.
"You know. If your uncomfortable working with me because of what I am, I'd understand." He said, sadly.
Tonks looked at him oddly. "Mmm, no I'm fine. I told you that. It's okay." She said, with a small smile.
'She's too kind' Remus thought to himself.
"I can talk to Mad Eye, he could change your partner" Remus explained.
Tonks didn't know why, but the thought of not being partners with Remus made her feel really sad.
"I don't want that. And Mad Eye is far less accommodating than you think he is. And, like I said I'm perfectly fine with being your partner, Remus" Tonks said, looking at him oddly., trying to understand why she had to tell him the same thing so many times.
Remus nodded, but was still unconvinced.
Tonks looked at him, wondering how the evening had taken such a bizarre turn.
