DISCLAIMER: I refer to what Americans call soccer as football in this chapter cuz it's a long time later with a new culture so I'm saying they adopted the term in Panem

When I was reaped, I panicked. Inside of course. A girl had some composure to keep. My mind raced with all the different strategies I could use, ones I had seen work on TV. I had to get home, to Vida and the kids. They needed me. On the outside, I casually walked up to the stage, whistling as I went. It was one of the hardest things I have ever done. When I got up, I leaned against the wall and inspected my nails. I was going for the carefree angle of course. I would seem to have something up my sleeve that might get me allies, but I wouldn't stand out as a threat. It worked well in the past and I didn't see too many flaws. When the boy was reaped, I hardly looked up, but when I did, I was shocked. They can't send him in like that!

I loved sports. I played them all the time, of course. Basketball, stickball, football, etc. You name it, I played it. Football was a great way to destress before the reaping. I dribbled the ball down the field and pulled my leg back to kick just as Felix went for the ball and I heard the loudest noise I'd ever heard, a sharp CRACK that I felt in my bones as a wave of absolute agony washed over me. I fell to the ground and wailed in pain.
"Oh crap!"
"CONNOR!" I heard Sabrina shout and rush over to me. I was in and out, but I remember waking up in a splint. Sabrina had set my leg.

"Your leg is broken Connor. It'll be alright if you don't strain it."

Darn it. No sports for me for a bit. Wait. The reaping. I reminded my friends and they helped me hobble to the town center. A girl with thick brown hair strolled onto stage. Then my name was called and all my blood rushed from my face. Lucas fainted, which would have been hilarious if it was some other reason. Felix began to stammer about volunteering but I cut him off.

"I'll get treated in the Capitol I bet, and you really don't stand a chance in there. I'll be back guys."

Sabrina burst into tears, but gathered herself and dried her face. But it was too late. Now I was crying.

I've done a lot of shifty things. Mostly to get out of situations I got myself into. If I got out of it then that was good, but if not, no big deal. Then there was one time where both kinda happened. So, as a valet, I get trusted with rich people's cars. It's pretty boring, but I make time pass. I like to drive down to the casinos and show off my new ride. They know it's not mine, but we pretend. Well, I pretend that they pretend. They like the cars, though. Which brings me to my next point. I gamble. I love the thrill of winning, yeah, but there's also something about losing, about knowing you can't pay and have to figure something out. Sometimes I don't even try. Sometimes I do. This was one of those times. I was being hounded by some particularly annoying loan sharks. I may have called them some names. But I gave them one of my cars instead. No big deal. My boss even let me off the hook. Until the real owner learned what I did and hired some goons to go after me. Now I have a limp that just makes it that much harder to get away. Not that I care. The pain makes me feel more alive than the roll of the dice.

I never liked the Peacekeepers. They thought they were so cool and tough. Some kids even wanted to grow up to be like them. I didn't like that at all. They were nothing but bullies. Of course they were strong and able to keep the Districts under control; they were the only ones with weapons. They had guns while the Districts had nothing but their fists. All we could do was complain about them, and even that was dangerous. They could just beat us into silence.

"He's just like Nero," I whispered to Tyra. I had to talk quietly to make sure the Peacekeeper didn't hear me. Some didn't care but some would shoot me on sight, and I wasn't about to take that risk.

"I wouldn't go that far. Snow doesn't kill everyone who follows a certain religion," Tyra responded. She was lying through her teeth, naturally. The Peacekeeper had noticed us and she was making sure we were saying good things about Snow.

"Yeah, you're right. Snow's actually a pretty good leader. We all get annoyed at leaders sometimes but they can still be good leaders overall. Even if we had an absolutely perfect leader who had never done anything wrong we'd still find something to complain about." I hated lying. It went against my moral code and just sounded stupid. I also hated getting shot, so I was willing to lie now and then.
