Remus woke with a start, the sunlight was streaming through the curtains, illuminating the smallest bedroom in his fathers house. He hadn't grown up in this house so it wasn't as familiar to him. And, for some reason he had always felt like he was in a strange place whenever he stayed there.
His parents had moved to this house after he had graduated Hogwarts so he had spent limited time there.
He still hated the house though. His mother had died here shortly after they had moved in.
Remus groaned and rolled over cautiously, not wanting to hurt his arm again. But, his arm still wasn't in great shape even after 10 days of rest.
Remus made his way down stairs after a few minutes. His father was already up.
"Hey, how are you doing?" his father asked.
"I'm alright. hopefully I can ditch this soon." He indicated to the sling on his arm.
his father nodded in agreement.
"I'm going to visit with the Weasleys later, you're welcome to come." Remus offered. It was Sirius' birthday and he was happy for the distraction the visit would bring.
"I'm visiting with the neighbors later on, they are making some pies for the book club and I'm helping." Lyall told him.
Remus smiled, his father loved his book club. and he was happy he'd found something he loved to do so much.
But, this gave Remus a thought. "Do we have stuff to make a pie, here? Id like to bring something for dinner tonight." he said, thinking perhaps he could give it to Tonks as a thank you for saving his life, or to Molly who had always welcomed him into her home kindly. He liked to give back when he could.
Molly had mentioned that Tonks might come to dinner. He secretly hoped shed be there, Perhaps he could use the pie as a peace offering he thought.
"yeah, we should I believe." his father told him casually.
Remus nodded, formulating his plan.
About an hour later, Remus found himself in his fathers little kitchen, busying himself with making a pumpkin pie.
He was so lost in thought though, that he almost messed up a few times. His thoughts were split between Tonks, and Alfie
He sighed loudly as he thought of the boy. He had been too ill to go back to try and find or locate him at all up to this point, but he couldn't stop worrying about the boy.
He couldn't help but feel as though he kept letting down the people in his life.
Remus went through the steps to complete his pumpkin pie, as he sadly remembered the last time he'd made one. It had been with Tonks on Sirius' birthday the year before.
Remus chuckled to himself, Sirius would certainly approve of his choice in pie. Sirius had dated an American girl for a few months just after they'd left Hogwarts and had been obsessed with the thanksgiving tradition since despite the fact that upwards of 95% of the UK didn't observe the holiday. But, he didn't care. Usually throwing himself a birthday party each year on the exact date to have an excuse to celebrate.
He silently hoped that wherever Sirius was, he was celebrating his birthday in typical Sirius fashion.
within a few hours, Remus had finished up his pumpkin pie and was satisfied with how it had turned out. He had even had time to take a nap before he had to leave to go to the Burrow.
When it was time for him to leave, he got up, and carefully showered and dressed as to not hurt his already injured arm, which was no easy task.
It took him twice as long as it normally would of to get ready.
But, he hurried downstairs once ready and grabbed the pumpkin pie he had made on the way out of the door. He walked down the stone pathway to the road. And, with a 'pop' he was gone in a blink of an eye, in fact if you had blinked you'd probably have missed it.
The air whipped around him as he materialized out of thin air, just beyond the boundaries to the Burrow. He naturally checked his arm once he had gotten his bearings, he wasn't use to apperating with such a severe injury.
The kids were still at school and wouldn't be back home for several more weeks, so it would just be himself, Kingsley, Molly and Arthur, as well as Bill and Fleur. 'And, Hopefully Tonks' he thought.
He felt badly that he even wanted to see her so much. Hadn't he just told her she should move on and find someone else to be happy with. And here he was, hoping that she'd be at dinner. He kept trying to convince himself that he only wanted to thank her for saving his life, but deep down he knew it was more than that.
The Burrow kitchen was alight with sounds and smells when Remus entered the house.
"Oh, Remus!" Molly Exclaimed. "Hello." she greeted him kindly.
Remus greeted her kindly in return, before looking around the kitchen covertly. The person he had wanted to see the most wasn't there.
After talking with Molly and Arthur for several minutes, Remus decided to ask about tonks, hoping he sounded casual enough.
"So, ah. Tonks wasn't planning on coming?" Remus asked, trying to remain generic and casual.
But Molly saw right through it. "Hm, no i don't think she'll be coming tonight. I tried to convince her but I think she's planning on spending the night alone." Molly told him with an unusual coldness in her voice.
Remus cursed himself internally. 'It wasn't really a holiday' he thought to himself. Trying to dissuade himself from thinking he had caused this new found isolation in Tonks. But, no matter how hard he tried,
In all honesty, Remus felt being yelled at would have been more preferable than the cold shoulder Molly was giving him. The worst part was he didn't particularly blame her for her anger with him. He had certainly made mistakes where Tonks was concerned and he didn't blame Molly for having sour feelings towards him over it. He never should of humored Tonks' advances to begin with. Then none of this would be happening.
He silently wished that Tonks would just move on and find someone else to be happy with, but deep down he knew he'd dread seeing her with someone else.
And, seeing Bill and Fleur so in love certainly didn't help. It made him miss Tonks, even though he wished he didn't.
Remus was quiet during dinner, and mostly only spoke when spoken to.
"So, es Dumbledore having ou go back to zee werewolves again. even thou you got so hurt?" Fleur asked concerned, in a heavy accent while she and Molly were cleaning up after dinner.
"No, no. Dumbledore and i agreed that unfortunately that would be too risky after everything that happened.
Fleur scoffed. " More like Fortunate!" She exclaimed.
Remus sighed. He couldn't help but wish he was going back, at least being away had been a nice distraction from everything else.
Remus was lost in thought, but it was broken by Molly.
"I would say so!" Mrs. Weasley exclaimed. "You almost lost your arm, for Merlin's sake." she said upset.
"Thankfully, I was able to get help. Otherwise I just might have." Remus said, indicating to his arm sling.
The rest of the night passed in a flash, and soon Remus was saying his goodbyes to the Weasleys and Kingsley in the kitchen of the Burrow.
"Would you like to take the last slice home Remus." Molly asked, presenting him with the last piece of pumpkin pie.
Remus almost told her to keep it, but thought better of it at the last second. "Ah yeah, ill take it back home with me. My dad will eat it."
Remus said.
But, deep down he wanted to bring it to Tonks. He felt horrible that she was seemingly missing out on spending time with people she cared about because of him.
Perhaps he still could use it as a peace offering.
Remus said his goodbyes and left the Burrow with his single piece of cake in his hand.
Suddenly, Remus reappeared across the street from Tonks' second floor flat. The lights were on, she was home.
But, he had no intention of staying to see her.
Remus walked up the stairs of the two floor walkup and gingerly set down the lone piece of pie. He looked at the single piece of pie sitting in it's dish and couldn't help but think it was missing something.
With a flourish of his wand, a small handwritten note appeared on top of the pie. He sighed, it was the best he could do.
He knocked on the door, and then disappeared into the darkness of the night.
Inside, Tonks heard the knock on her door, and went to go see who was there. She felt slightly weary at this as last time someone had knocked on her door, it had been Remus, and he had been dying. She looked out of the viewfinder but couldn't see anyone, and this made her even more nervous.
Tonks unhooked the latch of the door hesitantly, nd peered out of the door, opening it just a crack, with her wand ready, just in case.
But, no one was there. Tonks looked down and on her welcome mat there was a single piece of pumpkin pie sitting in a pan. She sighed heavily, leaning over to pick it up. There was a hand written note on it.
It read,
'Tonks,
Thanks for saving my life.
- R'
Tonks sighed again as she closed the door to her flat. Before wiping a single tear away from her face.
This was why it was so hard to move on from Remus. He cared more than the other guys. Tonks had been resolute in her choice to try to move on from Remus since their last encounter. But, that was easier said than done. Especially, since Remus was so kind and caring.
That was hard to find.
But, she had made her mind up. Ready or not, she was moving on...
