Chapter 10: Lightning Strikes Twice

I stood in the training field tapping my foot lightly waiting for my temporary teacher to arrive, but he was very late. I had gotten out of the hospital a few days ago and was right away greeted by Reno and Hayner. I learned they were going on separate training family trips to get ready for the next time the Chunin exams came along. Leaving me alone and with Ren-sensei still in the hospital with his sister keeping him company this was my next best choice.

"Sorry I'm late, I got lost in a train of thought and ended up at another field." he said turning towards him with my arms crossed saying, "Ren-sensei always believed in time management… Kakashi are you usually late with your students?"

He rubbed the back of his head laughing nervously replying, "Never mind that, come on we have a long trek ahead."

I gripped the straps to my backpack nodding as we began our trek towards the mountains since it would be safer. For most of the walk he was quiet having his nose in a book while I looked ahead frowning lightly. Yesterday Sasuke was brought back by Guy learning he tried to attack his brother but got seriously hurt in the process. Naruto was still with the Sannin while their other teammate Sakura had been staying at Sasuke's side since he was brought back.

I felt sort of bad that all his Genin were in such disarray but at the same time Hayner had been wanting to train more and more with his father than us. Reno of course wanted to be with us but after not passing the preliminary round he was determined to get better. It seemed this whole fiasco made most teams move around to help one another which in a way made our teamwork stronger.

We reached the mountain seeing Kakashi start to climb up as I followed doing my best to focus my chakra on keeping me from falling. During the climb I started thinking about Shino, he was still so angry at me, and I wondered if he would ever forgive me. Suddenly a rock slipped making me scramble to grab another one seeing Kakashi look down towards me.

"It's best not to let your mind wander too much while climbing, one false move and you're dead." he said in a serious tone nodding.

He was right, I did nothing wrong with Shino, so he had no right to be angry… still why did I feel so guilty?

Finally reaching the top the sun was now at its highest peak breathing heavily while Kakashi looked like he didn't even break a sweat. He began explaining to me what the Chidori was and how he created it as I listened quietly taking all the information in, especially the side effects of using it.

"As of right now I can only preform it four times a day and no doubt you'll be able to do it less, so this is something only to be used in dire circumstances." he said watching him bring his hand down seeing the sparks first before it started making a noise.

"Unlike Sasuke and I you don't have the Sharingan, but I believe with your clans blood techniques it will help make the skin tearing less damageable." he said making me nod as he began telling me how to charge it.

I glared at my hand trying my best to concentrate my chakra to my palm feeling my body start to sweat from the sun beating down on us. He leaned against a rock reading his book, but I saw him look up occasionally, just to see I wasn't making much progress. Sighing aggravated I took my outer jacket off not able to stand the heat any longer feeling his eyes bore into my bare back and arms.

Closing my eyes for a moment I took a deep breath trying to relax my body before opening them again looking at my hand seeing a spark. Smiling I concentrated harder seeing a few more sparks before a sharp pain went up my arm. Waving my hand, I saw a small cut, but it wasn't bleeding knowing this was a lot more powerful than the lightning I was used to.

I went over to my pack grabbing some wraps to put around my hand while Kakashi watched me before going back to the book saying, "Not a bad idea but that won't stop the internal damage the jutsu inflicts."

Frowning I nodded going back to it until the sun began to set and most of my chakra was depleted from focusing so much. The most I could muster was some sparks, but they fizzled quicker than I wanted them too. I sat beside the fire Kakashi had made munching on some food staring at him wondering if he was going to take his mask off.

"So, Ren-sensei told me you used to be a part of the ANBU." I said seeing him stare at me for a moment before saying, "Yea I was but I decided to change directions and become a teacher instead."

"Do you regret leaving?" I asked while he smiled saying, "Not really, sure we have more fighting and action but getting to teach and shape new shinobi is in itself more rewarding."

"I hope to be a teacher one day, when I was younger, I wanted to be the Hokage but now..." I leaned back smiling as I said, "Teaching is more hands on, to show people you can be whatever you want and it's not by what someone else wants you to be."

"I can think of a lot of kids who need to hear that and would do well to follow that." he said while I looked over at him saying, "Like Sasuke when it comes to his brother?"

He was quiet for a moment before saying, "Get some rest, at dawn you start again."

Realizing he didn't want to talk about it I nodded easily falling asleep to the open sky above me.

I glared down at my hand this was the third day I'd been here, and it started pouring as if the weather was mocking me. I was able to get more sparks, but it kept leaving painful welts in my skin which irritated me since it was coming from the inside. I could hear the thunder in the distance as I looked down at my hand seeing the sparks stay longer than before but winced seeing my skin tear. Sucking in a breath I looked at the blood dripping down my hand watching it meld with the water pooling at my feet. Thinking for a moment I got an idea going back into my stance as the sparks started to build up stronger making me smile.

Kakashi was suddenly beside me saying, "Alright now make it all the way to that rock to hit it."

Nodding he backed away as I looked at the large rock formation in front of me tightening my fist hearing the faint sparks of my Chidori. Taking off in a sprint I held my wrist pulling it back before making contact with the rock hearing it break just as some lightning struck behind me. Panting I began feeling dizzy as I started to fall but Kakashi was right beside me keeping me up.

"Not bad…" he said as I gave him a weak thumb up ignoring the blood still on my hands saying, "I think I'm going to change the name for mine though."

"Oh?" he said curiously while I replied, "Not sure on the name yet, I'll think of something."

"Well, when you decide the name, I hope it lives up to it." he replied as I laid myself on the ground saying, "Trust me it will."
