Chapter 2: Neo Domino City
Yasuko's eyes snapped open.
The moment she wakes up, Yasuko is lying on a soft bed with a blanket sheet over her body. Her mind was pondering what she had gone through. The dream of two dragons fighting each other destroyed the landscape. And then, the next thing she recalled was finding herself awake in bed.
She looks around, noting the bedroom full of luxury. She was confused. What did she go through after entering through the dimension's teleporter? Oddly, she felt something heavy on her chest. Yasuko peeks her head over, coming into eye contact with a cat who looked familiar to Koko. Its gray fur brushes against the blanket, with its dark eyes bearing down on her blue ones.
The cat purred at her as Yasuko moved upwards. The cat moved away and hopped down from the bed. She can finally see the room in full view. Apparently, it is different. She doesn't remember being in an apartment; everything in the apartment looked expensive.
She does not recall owning a large stuffed animal beside her pillow, a bed twice the size as her other bed, and certainly not a set of drawers or a huge closet. The windows and curtains are decorated with many expensive details. Yasuko pulls the blanket out and notices that she has no boots on, just her socks. She found her black vest jacket hung on the chair. Even the keychain with the crystal pendant she carried all her life is set on a table. She pulls the jacket over her shoulders and checks the room.
Everything looked very expensive, maybe even too expensive for Chloe, and she's a photographer. There was no way Chloe or Diana could even afford a place this expensive. Unless she isn't in Diana's or Chloe's home. She found a computer on a table, and Yasuko comes forward to check on something. Apparently, whoever lives in the place has the Internet. She clicks the mouse, only for a wallpaper to come popping up before her with a password.
Yasuko was even more confused. The wallpaper picture is a digital photo of what appears to be two identical twins. She is sure they are twins because, if she can guess, the one wearing a blue shirt with gold markings under a white jacket is the brother, and the other one with a red shirt with gold markings under the light pink jacket is the sister.
Besides their outfits, the twins all have gray-gold eyes and blue-green hair. The only difference was that the brother had his tied in a single ponytail with two bangs on the side. In contrast, the sister had hers done in two high ponytails with two shoulder bangs on the side, each reaching down to her shoulders.
They all looked so happy together. Yasuko wonders where they are right now, although she wonders if they're home. Yasuko felt her legs rubbed, and she looked down at the cat she woke up with.
When it comes to cats, they always tend to bite her. To see if she is in a different dimension, she leans over to give the cat a rub on the head. When her hand was close to the cat, it leaped up and bit her fingers.
"Ow!" Yasuo wretched her hand back from the cat. "Even across this dimension, cats still bite me," she retorted.
The feline creature meowed and then started walking out. The cat paused, turned its head, and looked at her as if it was telling her to follow it.
Yasuko gets off the chair and then follows the cat. The door was slightly opened, which the cat squeezed through quickly. She opened the door and entered the hallways. Yasuko doesn't know how rich these kids are, considering that the hallway is virtually decorated with many expensive kinds of stuff.
The cat leads Yasuko through the hallways as the girl looks around, impressed by how the parents of those two kids she saw in the photo could afford anything she saw. As Yasuko entered the hallways, she heard a commotion from what may seem to be the living room. She can't be sure who's down there or who's home. The only thing she can do is find out for herself.
Yasuko strides to the living room, listening to the voices get clearer. That's when she realized that the voices could be the twins from the photos. She enters the second floor's clearing, spotting the twins on the sofa with her duel disk holster and her duel disk.
"Lua," the sister called to her brother, Lua. "I don't think you shouldn't be looking at those cards. Those don't belong to you."
"Oh, c'mon, Luna," Lua responded, checking the cards in his small hand. "I've gotta know how this girl got her hands on these cards." He checked the different ones, and one of them was holding Odd-Eyes Phantom and Dark Anthelion.
"Look at 'em," Lua said. "Did you see any of them looked like this?" he asked, holding Odd-Eyes Phantom to her sister.
"I never saw them in my life," Luna replied, pushing Lua's hand away from her face. "And like I said, you shouldn't be touching someone's stuff." She sounds more concerned about her brother prying into Yasuko's stuff. "They don't belong to you."
"Aw, c'mon," Lua sneered. "You know she's been asleep since for two days. She probably crashed herself into our garbage cans that other night. Took a hit in the head. She won't mind if I look at 'em."
Yasuko decides to reveal herself to the twins. "Actually, she does mind if you ever touch her stuff," she cautioned. Yasuko finds her voice to be very frail and weak. Regardless, she caught the twins' attention, the other brother flinching in shock and fear, with the sister being calm but surprised.
The older girl strolls down the stairs to come to see her stuff intact and nothing stolen or lost. Yasuko saw Lua putting down the cards from his small hands and backed away. She would've been angry if the kids stole something, but she isn't since these kids are younger than her. She sits on the sofa and checks the deck; the cards are spread out.
"Uh…I'm sorry if my brother pried into your stuff, miss," Luna apologized. "But my brother…he's just curious because he wants to be a turbo duelist one day." Now, Yasuko's even more confused than before. Turbo duelist. What are they talking about? Yasuko feels like she's back into her past when she first moved to Tokyo out of Wangkou. If memories serve, she starts to realize why she came to the house in the first place.
Apparently, she was in the middle of teleporting to the Synchro Dimension. However, someone obviously didn't set the proper coordinates, stranding her in an utterly foreign place.
Yasuko clears her throat before she gets up and heads to the kitchen.
"Uh, where are you going?" Lua asked.
"To find some water," Yasuko spoke, her throat dry for some reason. She was able to find the kitchen by the sink and the refrigerator. She grabs a glass cup and turns on the nob, filling the cup with clear water. She drinks it, only to choke on the water and then spit it out. She coughs roughly as the twins come into the kitchen to check on her.
"Are you alright?" Luna asked, concerned.
"That's the sink water, ma'am," Lua informed.
Yasuko holds a hand to stop any more talking until she gets herself composed. She turned to the brother and asked, "Then which one's the drinking water?"
Luna took the glass cup from Yasuko and pressed a button on the refrigerator. Yasuko didn't notice the small metal door opening to reveal a water and ice dispenser. Luna places it in the fridge. As she puts it, the water pours down from the dispenser before Luna offers it back to Yasuko.
She takes it with one eyebrow raised. "Thanks," said Yasuko.
Yasuko felt relieved to drink some cool water after one bizarre and dizzy teleportation from her other dimension. "I'd take it you two are twins?" she asked.
"Yep," Lua confirmed. "My name is Lua, and this is my younger sister, Luna." He introduces himself and his sister. "We're identical twins."
"Uh, where am I, exactly?" Yasuko inquired, looking around the kitchen, which is just as expensive as the living room.
"You're in our apartment," Lua answered. "We live on the twenty-second floor of—"
"No, no, no, no," Yasuko interrupted, pausing Lua from giving her too much information. "As in…where am I, exactly?" She has to know where she is. Yasuko distinctively recalls being teleported to the Synchro Dimension, but where is the question she needs to know. She was unsure if she had landed in a foreign country or a different city. Does she have to travel very far just to find the Lancers?
The twins looked at each other with confusion written on their faces. Apparently, they think she's either delusional or just confused.
"Uh…The Tops," Luna answered.
Yasuko scrutinized her eyebrows, perplexed about what Luna meant by Tops. "The Tops?" she repeated. "What tops? You mean the rooftop?"
Lua shakes his head, bewildered by Yasuko's reaction. "No, the Tops. As in… the Tops in Neo Domino City?" he inquired, wondering if Yasuko was delusional.
"Neo Domino City?" Yasuko repeated the name of the city she was in. The girl had never heard of a city called Neo Domino City before; maybe, she didn't know what or where Neo Domino City was. She knows this is Earth, and the twins speak her language, but she doesn't know where she is exactly. "Uh…where's the window?" Yasuko takes the glass cup of water to the living room table and places it. She didn't hear the footsteps following behind her.
"Wait," Luna called. "Ma'am, listen. We found you in an alleyway next to our apartment by our garbage cans. You were out cold, and you bumped your head really hard. I think you should take it easy."
"I don't have time to take it easy," Yasuko rebuked. "I need to know where am I." She comes up to the curtains of the large window and then pulls it. However, when she pulled the curtain, it didn't budge. The curtains were stuck. She tried even harder, but the curtain stuck to the wall.
"Hey! Wait!" Lua comes forward and tries to pull Yasuko away from the curtains. "You can't just pull the curtains like that! You have to—" Lua and Yasuko ended up ripping the fabric down just before Lua could explain how to use the curtains properly. They both ended up falling over, taking the ripped curtains with them.
"Oh no!" Luna checks up on the brother, who is on top of Yasuko. "Lua, uh…miss, are you okay?"
Lua props up with a torn curtain in his hands. "Okay?! This lady just destroyed mom's favorite curtain!" he exclaimed. "Oh man, she's gonna be so mad when she finds out." He moans with despair as Lua walks back and forth, thinking of what to do with the rest of the curtain.
Luna, on the other hand, was more concerned about Yasuko. The older girl got up and looked at the fabric, wondering if the curtains could be replaced. "Uh…sorry, it's just…I need to see where am I," she apologized.
The twin sister sighed. "It's automatic," she clarified. "The curtains can only be activated if you come here." Luna walked over to a console on the wall and pressed a button. The curtains started to reel themselves back, temporarily allowing bright sunlight to blind Yasuko. The moment Yasuko saw the outside, she was astonished to find herself in a different world than Maiami City
Neo Domino City is a very different city compared to Maiami or Tokyo. It is like Yasuko had traveled to the future instead of teleporting to a different dimension. The ocean horizon makes a crystal blue glow from the sun as tall skyscraper structures tower over the smaller ones that also stand on top of suburbs and urban areas below. There's even an extended network of highway roads connecting to the other tall structures throughout the city.
Seeing the city from the top of a structure was breathtaking, making her wonder how high she was in this Neo Domino City. Then, she realized what it could mean for her. Based on the width of the city limits from the ocean, Yasuko understands the task she needs to do. The whole city is three times bigger than Maiami City, and if that means the Lancers are all in Neo Domino City, then it will be bad for her.
They don't know where she is. They could be out there looking for her. On second thought, she thinks they are all over the city because Declan didn't put down the right coordinates on their devices. She can be sure Yuya is somewhere out there, probably alone and worried sick about her.
There is no doubt about it herself. Yasuko is alone here in this metropolitan dimension with no backup, no home, and no way to communicate with others. She doesn't even know if the duel disk could contact Yuya from this dimension if she can get a line. Nonetheless, she needs to find out more about the Synchro Dimension.
"Pretty, isn't it?" Lua inquired. "This is Neo Domino City. We just got lucky because our parents are—" Lua didn't notice until now that Yasuko had left his side. "Uh, hey, where are you going?"
"I need to get out there," Yasuko answered. "I have to find someone, and I bet he's still here somewhere." She gathers all her cards and then inserts them into her duel disk. She placed the duel disk in her holster and looped it around her waist before grabbing her gym bag. Yasuko picked it up, only to realize that the weight of the gym bag was lighter than the last time she brought it with her. She zips it open, discovering that some of the food she brought was not as much as she had.
Turning to the kids, Yasuko suspects one of them had eaten her stash, and she can guess it was the brother. "Hey, kid brother, did you eat my stuff when I was asleep?" she interrogated.
Lua finds her accusation of being absurd, crossing his arms. "What makes you think I ate any of them?" he inquired.
Yasuko narrowed her eyes, concluding that the brother was lying since he was the one prying on her stuff while she was asleep. She comes over and grabs his hand, sniffing it like a dog. "Your hand smells like curry and crispy shrimp," she pointed out. "And your mouth still has sugar coating all over."
The brother flinched with fear, already caught by Yasuko. He felt like he was busted for eating some of her food. "I'm…I didn't know," he said. "It's just…I have never seen them before."
The girl drops Lua's hand and pinches her eyes, frustrated with her own situation. She groaned, feeling the urge to smack Lua in the head if not for the mission. The food was meant to last for about a couple of weeks, but now that Lua has eaten some of them, there are only two days of food before she goes broke.
She doesn't know the money in Neo Domino City or whatever country it is. In essence, Yasuko is broke. Any cash in her pocket is worthless compared to Neo Domino City's. She doesn't know how she will get money now that she's on her own. Usually, it's Chloe who sends her some allowance every three weeks when she was in Maiami City, but now it is different.
Yasuko turns to the twins, who are starting to feel uncomfortable with her in the apartment. She sighed, concluding that the only way she could get around the city was with the help of Lua and Luna.
"Alright," Yasuko began, finally speaking to the kids after so long. "First, let's get something to eat, cuz I am starving, and then we can talk. Sounds good?"
The twins looked at each other, pondering their decision. Yasuko can't be sure what the kids are thinking. She doesn't know what the "Tops" is.
"Uh…Are you sure we should do that?"
Yasuko shrugged. "Yeah, why? Don't you?"
"It's not that. It's just…" Luna has second thoughts about her idea to grab a bite outside of their apartment. "We aren't supposed to be with people like you?"
This was out of the ordinary. For the first time, Yasuko was taken aback by their reaction. Did they seem afraid of her? "People like me?" Yasuko didn't know how offended she is. "What the hell does that supposed to mean?" She can feel her brain already working on what the kids are referring her to. The kids discriminate against her as if she's a foreigner.
"You wouldn't happen to be from the Commons, aren't you?" Lua asked, which confused the girl even more.
"What the hell's the Commons?" Yasuko replied with a question of her own. In their eyes, the girl can see how the twins are staring at each other with the same perplexity as she is.
"Wait, so, you're not from the Commons?" Luna inquired.
"What would you say if I'm a foreigner?"
The girl tries to give the kids a better view of herself, being someone from outside their culture or city, and it finally dawns on the twins. They now understand that she is from outside of Neo Domino City.
"You're from out of the country?" Lua inquired, sounding surprised to hear her say.
"It's complicated," Yasuko answered. Twins as young as Sora don't seem to realize her purpose in being in the city. The Synchro Dimension is like the Standard Dimension in their peacetime before the Dimensions War became aware to the whole world. She figures that Academia could've targeted and invaded the Synchro Dimension anytime. She figures that Academia's so preoccupied with the Xyz Dimension that they are focusing on subjugating the residents over there and not here.
This was the golden opportunity to find some strong allies to aid the Lancers. Academia may have been stretched too thin to deal with the Synchro Dimension; however, that isn't the problem for Yasuko.
She's in trouble now that Yasuko's alone. All by herself. She had never been on her own before. She was used to living with her foster mother, Chloe, and her parents; now, it's a different experience for her. She wonders if this was like to be living on her own once she graduated from high school. She can think about it later.
"So, is anyone else home beside the two of you?" Yasuko asked.
Luna shakes her head and says, "No, it's usually just me, my brother, and me."
Out of all the things that could make Yasuko bewildered, this was one of them. She lived between Chloe and her parents, but the twins had everything to themselves. "What? You mean, you're parents aren't home?" she inquired. "Like ever?"
Lua shrugged as if it wasn't a big deal for him or his sister. "Nah, our parents often work overseas, so we usually take care of ourselves."
"But you kids are 10," Yasuko pointed out.
"11, actually," Luna corrected.
Her response only made Yasuko raise one eyebrow, perplexed by the kids and their parents. In her head, she can only think of a place where black and white are covered. The kid's parents are probably ridiculously wealthy, meaning they always buy and don't have enough time for their kids.
She can't be sure if that's bad parenting or something rich people do. "Okay…" she said, uncertain. "What do you kids want to eat? Cuz I have no idea what to find."
"Do you want to order something?" Lua suggested.
"Do you have any money?" Yasuko asked.
"We have premium bank gift cards," Luna answered.
"Premium what cards?" Yasuko finds herself baffled by the system's currency or the city's money.
"Premium bank gift cards are only available for the Tops," Lua explained. "They're basically gift cards, but we use them to access credit bits and use them as money."
Yasuko doesn't understand how the money system works in the Synchro Dimension. She might've thought the money system would be like the one from the Standard Dimension, but it is different since there's the ultrarich and the mass of the poor.
"Uh…I don't get it," Yasuko said, scratching her head.
Lua and Luna seemed surprised of her reaction. They think Yasuko wasn't familiar with the Tops' money transactions or customs.
"You really don't know how to use the credits?" Luna asked.
Yasuko was familiar with payments, but how they do it in the Synchro Dimension is new. She even wonders how she will get money in the Synchro Dimension. "Well, cash seems to be going fine for me until now," she said.
She can think of a way to get some money later, but Yasuko has to get out there in the city. "I appreciate that you kids cared for me when I was asleep, but I have to get going." Yasuko takes her gym bag and starts heading to the door.
"Already?" Luna wasn't sure if Yasuko leaving their home was a good idea considering she woke up without being familiar with the city. "Wait, do you know where you are going?"
The older girl turns back to the twin sister. She may have a point. Neo Domino City is different from any other cities she's been to. If she is ever going to find Yuya, she must ask the twins for help with her, even if it means getting around the Tops.
"Do you know of a library around?" Yasuko responded with a question of her own.
"But do you know of a library?" Luna countered. "I mean, this is the Tops."
"Meaning?" Yasuko inquired.
Lua and Luna exchange worried looks, which tells Yasuko something different about the city than the ones back at her Standard Dimension.
"Is there something I'm missing?" Yasuko asked the twins.
"It's just…." Luna began.
"The Tops don't really like Commoners trespassing into their property," Lua finished.
Yasuko stared at the twins, taking it as a warning. Now, she is getting something off with Neo Domino City. "What do you mean?" she probed, facing the twins with suspicions.
"Uh, we have this strict law declaring anyone who isn't rich cannot be allowed here in Tops," Luna explained. "And since you are a foreigner, they will prosecute you for trespassing on private property."
Yasuko wasn't afraid of the law. She has done parkour in many areas that are off-limits before. Still, it's better to stay low and check whatever the city offers. "Perhaps you kids can be my tour guide," she suggested.
Lua and Luna didn't make a response. It was an easy guess for Yasuko to note their hesitation since they were from the Tops. "My thoughts exactly," said Yasuko. She comes up to the door, and before she can open it, a ringing tone echoes in the room.
The twin brother realizes who is calling and heads over to a computer on the other side of the living room to check who sent him a message. He logs in and reads the email. Upon reading, Lua seemed excited about the message.
"Hey, Luna! They're having a park event today!" Lua boomed. "We have to go!"
Luna seemed more concerned about Yasuko than attending a special park event. "Lua, we don't have time for that thing," she stated. "We have to help her," she declared.
"And you are," Yasuko announced. "By showing me this Central Park event you received."
The confusion came to the twin brother, bewildered by Yasuko's decision. "Wait, you want to come?" he inquired.
"I wanna see what kind of duels and duelists this city has in store." She opens the door. "Let's just make sure we keep this ordeal to ourselves." She leaves the kids to decide for themselves if they want to come, but as for Yasuko herself, she is going out to find out more about this Neo Domino City.
Alright readers, here is the second chapter of the day. Now, be aware, I may or may not cover a lot of the legacy characters from the 5ds era, but I will try and make sure they all fit within the Arc V. I hoped you like it, and if you do, feel free to give a comment and follow this story through. You folks take care now, and enjoy the rest of the day.
