Chapter 28:

Reviews please?

To pankajsureka17: Greyback mentioned that „Today's victory has come at a high cost" and I truly tried to write it like that. Both sides lost a lot of fighters so while it is technically a death eater win it is pretty much only a phyrric victory. Most aurors behaved like cowards? Well you can certainly put it like that but from 12 aurors coming into the Courthouse to help, how many survived? If I am recounting correctly 6: Christopher Weasley, Rufus Scrimgeour, Andres Shellford, Hector Dagworth-Granger, Jordan Pyke and Taramyn Orpington. Scrimgeour and Weasley faced impossible odds at the time of their escape, you might call it cowardly I call it smart. Taramyn Orpington is an unexperienced auror who has neither the stomach nor the necessary state of mind to fight in a war as she realises in the end. Where can I agree with you are Shellford, Pyke and Dagworth-Granger. The thing is Jordan Pyke is pretty much in the same position as Orpington and Hector Dagworth-Granger needs to think of his family who is close to extinction. So 4 aurors were cowards and 3 of those had excuses for that. Also keep in mind that there is extreme nepotism in the Ministry already before Fudge even thinks of becoming Minister one day, the auror corps isn't as affected by this as other departments but there will still be aurors who didn't become one because they were competent but because they had good connections. It is true though that I left the order completely out of this particular battle but that's because the war has escalated only like half a year before the battle took place so the order isn't as organised yet as Dumbledore might want it to be. Also remember that the only order picture we see (or I atleast remember) is from 1980! From the list I can gather online it is safe to assume that at this point in time there are only around a dozen order members. They were able to react fast at the Battle of Hogsmeade because Hogsmeade is so close to Hogwarts, the Pyrites family is not part of the Order and neither were any of the aurors who came for help so who would notify the Order that the family had been attacked? Apart from the ministry that is which you will see in this chapter.

Notes: I just realised that I used the American way of counting floors. To everyone british: Since I know I am not gonna instinctively use the british way of counting floors please assume that the first floor is the ground floor, the second one the first and so on. I hope it doesn't cause too much confusion and/or ruin the fight scenes.

Patch Notes:

I changed Lord Prewett in chapter 21 from Gideon to his uncle Ignatius. Gideon is in his late 20s maybe in his early 30s at this point in the timeline so the possibility of him already being Lord Prewett is pretty slim.

4th October 1976, England, Burke Manor:

Bisonis Burke looked worriedly at the letter sent by one Alastor Moody, apparently the Pyrites, his sister's family, were in that very moment being attacked by death eaters. He was glad the auror response had been very quick this time. Sure Blossom and him had been closer once but their relationship was still good and they tended to visit eachother from time to time. Should he send additional help? Surely the DMLE would send enough aurors to deal with the death eaters? It was in this very moment that Bisonis felt the wards being attacked by someone rather powerful. Whoever it was, they weren't trying to be sneaky, they were announcing their presence with brute force. And there weren't many in Magical Britain who knew they could get away with it. Atticus Sayre, Albus Dumbledore and... You-Know-Who.

„Merlin's balls, is the bastard coming after everyone with Burke blood now or what? Mimpy!" he called after his old house elf who appeared within seconds.

„What is Master be wishing of Mimpy?" his ever so loyal elf said. Bisonis looked at with a resigned expression.

„Tell all family members currently in the Manor to gather in the top floor of the library and then notify our allies in the Wizengamot of an attack by You-Know-Who. Tell them that he is most likely personally here and to send their homes into lockdown status if they can." he told his elf who disappeared with a crack and without another word. Not even a minute later and the family had gathered in the library.

„What's happening gramps?" asked his great granddaughter Bianca, a question many apparently had as all the younger family members nodded at her question.

„We are under attack, aren't we father?" asked his eldest son Bovis. This made everyone very nervous especially when Bisonis nodded.

„Everyone except Bianca and Barrow are to prepare the library for battle. Make the traps you can, I already activated those our family created over the centuries. If we are to go down, we'll go with wands blazing." the elder Burke said.

„Shouldn't we try to preserve the family library?" asked a concerned Bertram though he tried not to show his worry too much. The death eater was afraid that he'd be punished severely if the Burke library was destroyed during the battle.

„The library won't matter if we all are killed besides... I'd prefer it if it went down with us should it come to that, don't want our enemy to give more ammunition to use against his enemies, do we?" Bisonis asked grinning. His grin disappeared when he felt the wards strain against a particularly strong onslaught „Alright, enough chit chat. They're gonna be through the wards soon so start your preperations as soon as the matter of Bianca and Barrow is finished. Bilomo, I'm sorry but your skills in battle are needed here so I need someone else to apparate to the basement with the children once the wards fall. Anyone volunteering? Ahh Philomena I should have guessed I wouldn't be able to keep you from your children" Bisonis told the young woman who nodded at him. He realised she had just stared ahead the entire time she had been in the library. Bisonis shuddered, Mothers could be scary when their children were in danger.

„Anyone else?" he asked his family.

„I'd rather stay here with you father" said his youngest son „And I think Juliana and Mercy will also want to fight our foes" Bartholomeus continued and Bisonis saw the mentioned women nodding along.

„I will go with Philomena" said Bertram and Bisonis nodded approvingly. Bertram would be missed during in battle but he wasn't quite as skilled as the others of the family so he was the perfect one to apparate with Philomena and the children into the basement. Not a minute later the wards fell and Bisonis simply said „The wards are gone. It's almost time. Let's make them feel like they were kissed by a Dementor". Nothing more needed to be said. Either they survived or they didn't and they would give their all to make sure everyone of them came out of this alive. They knew though that this was unlikely. You-Know-Who managed to battle Albus Dumbledore to a standstill and if he indeed was there at Burke Manor that day then there wasn't much they could do.

**Scene Break**

Voldemort entered the glamorous Manor of the Burkes and sniffed disdainfully. Such an ancient pureblood family, such a magnificant history, just why did Lord Burke have to make a stand against him? So much potential would be lost here. But it was necessary, he couldn't allow any opposition. No, not when he was trying to rule Magical Britain with an iron fist. Luckily most of his followers were not even questioning their somewhat frequent attacks on purebloods. Voldemort knew that questions on why they were doing so were quite valid, there weren't too many pureblood families to begin with, so why would they not focus on the mudbloods?

Too bad for his followers but he didn't really care too much about the cause. Sure he hated muggles but he didn't have anything against the mudbloods per se. He didn't necessarily like them but his vision didn't require all of them dead. What he wanted though was power and for that he needed the purebloods' money and influence. And if he got that by sacrificing every single mudblood in Britain he would do so without a second thought. He kept those opinions to himself of course. No need to alienate his followers just yet, he could do so when he had ultimate power. One of his followers tried to gain his attention and Voldemort brought himself back to the here and now.

„My Lord noone is on the first floor and there seems to be no basement" one the woman whose name he didn't know (or remember who knows, it didn't really matter anyway) told him.

„Hmmm no basement? Strange but perhaps the Burkes saw no need for one. Very well then. Bellatrix lead me and the others to the second floor and leave a couple of our lower ranks behind to get anything useful for our cause." he told Bellatrix who was one of his lieutenants. The woman had taken the pregnancy and birth well and was back to her usual playful craziness. He hoped Delphini, their daughter, hadn't inherited too much of the Black craziness but he knew it would manifest atleast in some way. He realised he had sunk back into his thoughts and he was climbing the stairs behind some of his followers when a scream occured behind him. More screams followed as he whirled around and saw that his followers had turned with him towards the chaos that had suddenly been caused behind them. Panthers, wolves and even a couple hippogryphs were battling and chasing his followers through the hallway. One of his followers had a dagger stuck in her throat and was sinking to her knees as she gasped for air. Another's head and body had been seperated and his blood was staining the carpet. Multiple had arrows that gave off a sickly feeling in their backs, stomachs, legs etc. Another two had been partially transfigured and were screaming in distress, another's chest was littered with holes. One was crawling on the floor, probably blinded by whatever happened to her and another was convulsing on the floor.

„I want a report immediately on what just happened" he ordered. Voldemort was furious and impressed at the same time. Furious because who dared to defy him with traps of all things? They should have just fought them like proper purebloods. He was also impressed however. Some of those traps were very creative and even outright cruel, he could appreciate that. Minutes later and all traps had been dealt with and a report had been created by Lucius Malfoy who swallowed.

„Uhm my Lord. We were taken by surprise by a series of traps when Mary Janeway tried to open a door to what we now know is the living room" Lucius told his Lord nervously.

„Hmpf where is the foolish woman?" Voldemort asked with a grimace. She would have to be punished severely for such foolishness.

„Dead my Lord. The moment she opened the door a dagger embedded itself in her throat, we couldn't save her from whatever curse was on it" Lucius said and Voldemort smiled but only for a second. He could settle for death in this case, there was nothing worse than death after all.

„I see. What other casualties did we take?" he continued trying to establish how high their losses were so far.

„Mary's brother Lenner and Javelin Broadstar were partially transfigured. They are alive but unable to go on with the assault. Joan Rivers has been blinded with the possibility that it is permanent and is being brought to our healers in Lestrange Manor. Ruben Conebush has been decapitated and something caused holes in Woodlan Riker's chest, both are dead. Olaifa Thicknesse was struck by a cruciatus from who knows where and is being delivered to St. Mungos. Maxwell Edison, Aaron and Anne-Marie Elderberry, Elias Trembley and Benevenia Fledgling were killed by either the panthers, wolves or hippogryphs. Finally, Liera Logg and Maximilian Max are nowhere to be found so it is safe to assume something happened to them." Lucius reported nervously as he half expected to be cursed. Nothing happened though as Voldemort was once again sinking into his own world.

So 14 had been taken out of the fight which was far more than Voldemort had hoped for. He didn't really care for them personally but he needed the fools. He mentally raised a glass to the Burkes in grudging respect. He had lost more death eaters in the past 10 minutes than in all previous raids this year. Seeing that Lucius and the others were waiting for a reaction he called for Macnair.

„Yes my Lord, what is thy bidding?" Walden Macnair asked as he sank to his knees. Moments later he fell to the floor screaming in pain as Voldemort held him under the cruciatus for a few seconds. When he stopped torturing the death eater Voldemort said „I expected better from you. With Rockwood gone you should have disabled the traps before they caused so much damage. I expected better of you Walden".

„Yes my Lord, I will do better next time" the admonished death eater promised his lord who merely said „See that you do" before walking back to the staircase.

„Oh and Mulciber, try to find out what happened to Logg and Max. Make sure to remind them of their duties if you do, it would be unfortunate if I found out they had deserted our cause".

**Scene Break**

By the time they finally reached the fifth floor of the Manor they had lost another few of their members. The traps they encountered on the second to fourth floor were by no means less vicious Walden Macnair redeemed himself in Voldemort's eyes as he disabled many of the traps before they caused any harm.

**Scene Break**

„Uncle Bertram how long do we have to remain here?" „Uncle Bertram do you think the battle has started yet?" „Uncle Bertram do you believe we will defeat You-Know-Who?" „Uncle Bertram..." „Uncle Bertram...".

Uncle Bertram this, Uncle Bertram that. Merlin if this continued for another hour he didn't know if he'd be able to restrain himself. And that bitch Philomena made no motion to admonish her spawns instead she resorted to glancing at Bertram with clear amusement in her eyes. Bertram slowly but surely started to regret the decision to hide away with the kids. He knew though that he couldn't get into the crossfire when the battle finally started and that would easily happen should he be in the library once his associates attacked.

**Scene Break**

Voldemort looked at the double door thoughtfully. Looking at one of his lieutenants he asked „Pontius what can we expect once we go through this door? Did Bertram Burke tell you anything about the fifth floor?"

„Yes my Lord from what Bertram told me this is most likely the entrance to the Burke family library" Pontius Goldstein told him. Pontius' elder brother was an auror pretty high up in the hierarchy and would have been a useful pawn but the man refused to even think about joining him so Pontius would have to do. Voldemort felt his right eye twitching. Of course... the library. Lord Burke must have realised that Voldemort would most likely be after the library among other things and chose to make his family's last stand there. It wouldn't save the Burkes of course but Voldemort knew he and his followers would have to be very careful here, the destruction of the library could not be allowed to happen. Voldemort placed a silencing spell on the double door and turned around to look at his followers.

He waited for a bit before he had everyones' attention „My faithfuls, beyond these doors lays the Burke family library. I don't think I have to mention how useful it could prove itself to be to our cause if we manage to preserve it during the battle. In order for that to happen you are to restrict yourself to precise spells like killing, severing and cruciatus curses. Wide area spells like the bombarda are extremely prohibited. The only wide area spell that's gonna be used is the bombarda which I will use to get us into the library. Everything understood? Good let's take what was meant to be ours!"

**Scene Break**

Head Auror Alastor Moody felt like hitting his head on the table, why did he ever accept this damn position? He could be hunting the dark bastards right now but instead he needed to coordinate the auror responses to over a dozen attacks all over the damn country. It all felt manageable at first, in the late morning he had gotten reports by some of his aurors that muggle villages in Wales and Cornwall were being attacked. Werewolves, regular death eaters, vampires and even a few trolls rampaged more and more throughout the country. What started in Wales and Cornwall quickly spread to the whole country and by the early afternoon the auror corps was spread thin.

It was during that time that Auror Shellford had rushed into Alastor Moody's office.

„Sir Junior Auror Riker just came back from a check up on the Pyrites family home and reports atleast half a dozen death eaters in the entrance hall of the Courthouse" the panting man had said. He had sent Shellford, his partner and 4 additional Auror teams to the Pyrites Courthouse in order to help the family out. He couldn't spare anything more as the entire corps was busy. That was two hours ago. Since then he had gotten a resignation letter from Junior Auror Taramyn Orpington who had been on the reinforcement mission to the Pyrites Courthouse. Her final report showed a situation he really didn't like. The Pyrites Courthouse was apparently heavily damaged, there was an unknown number of casualties amongst the Pyrites family, many of Voldemort's followers had been killed but so had been atleast 5 aurors. It was a mess. Taramyn had apologised for her cowardice and explained that she didn't have the guts to fight a civil war, Alastor could appreciate that she herself was able to recognise that. Too many kids were playing war these days. He had sent a patronus to Albus (useful invention of Albus this patronus message thingy) and informed him of the situation. He got one back telling him Albus was gathering the order together but that it would take a while. Shortly after Senior Auror Rufus Scrimgeour came into his office to report that he and his partner had to retreat after they were the only ones left. Not too long ago and Shellford came into his office and gave him the resignation letter of Hector Dagworth-Granger who had apparently retreated with his family to their old family home. Jordan Pyke had atleast not resigned but was in St. Mungos and would stay there for a while. Someone knocked on the door. Alastor sighed, not again. „Come in, what is it again Auror Shellford?" he asked as he recognised a nervous expression on the man's face.

„Sir, letters from multiple families of the Ministry Faction just came in. Lord Burke sent a letter to all his allies informing them of an attack on Burke Manor which Lord Burke assumes is lead by You-Know-Who himself" Shellford said and Alastor shook his head. He really couldn't deal with another attack right now, they were spread thin as it was.

„Shellford, how many Aurors can we spare to send to Burke Manor?" he asked the auror who thought about that for a moment.

„Right now? Sir I don't think we can send a proper group there. We are still responding to over two dozen attacks simultaniously" Shellford responded and Alastor cursed when in that very moment Albus' head appeared in the fireplace.

„We are ready Alastor, how is the situation at the Pyrites Courthouse?" asked the headmaster of Hogwarts.

„Albus, you lot got ready just in time. The current situation at Pyrites Courthouse is unknown but from the last update it is safe to assume that the entire family is dead. Don't go just yet Albus. We have more pressing matters. Burke Manor is under attack and it is expected that Voldemort himself is leading the assault" Moody told his old friend whose eyes widened in surprise.

„Indeed? Well then there is no other choice then to go to Burke Manor. I will send Dedalus and Mara over to you. They will go scout Pyrites Manor, send any trustworthy auror you can gather within a few minutes with them. If you will excuse me, I got a family to save" Albus said and vanished. Moments later a woman and a man came through the floo. They looked at him and waited for his motion to start their mission. Alastor turned to Shellford who had stayed silent during the entire interaction and grinned.

„Well Shellford wanna go back to the Pyrites Courthouse?" he asked the man who raised an eyebrow and said „I am not particularly thrilled to do so but I will if you give the order, sir. Who are these two however? They don't wear auror robes so are they Hit-Wizards? And why did they have to be sent by Headmaster Dumbledore of all people?" Shellford asked.

„No they are not Hit-Wizards, what you must know is that Dumbledore has a couple of friends who are willing to help us out in the fight against Voldemort. Enough chit chat, take these two and Aurors Weasley and Scrimgeour with you. Scout the Pyrites family home and if you deem it safe enter it, otherwise return and report to me directly." Alastor said, in the end addressing all three of them.

„Understood sir" said Shellford and the other two remained silent but nodded along. The man seemed very cheerful despite the situation for some reason. Odd but nothing he thought about for more than a moment as he and the others left the room to find Weasley and Scrimgeour.

**Scene Break**

The door exploded into pieces which flew into the library and the fight was on. The death eaters streamed into the library having forgotten the traps they had to get through to even get to the library. Atleast a dozen unmarked / lower ranked death eaters fell to various kinds of traps. Spikes shot through the floor and killed Aurora Dovetail, a newly marked death eater while another of her associates was immediately decapitated by a severing curse courtesy of Pia Burke nee Crouch, the Lady Burke. She had to duck and throw herself to the ground as 4 killing curses flew towards her. Seconds later they impacted the shelf behind her which exploded into many splinters hitting Mercy in several areas including the face. The injured witch went down whimpering in pain as her husband ran towards her. The battle hadn't even properly started yet when it stopped again as everyone looked surprised at the point where the now heavily damaged bookshelf stood just seconds ago.

„Hmmm I must admit I had forgotten the results of a killing curse hitting materials like wood" an amused voice could be heard throughout the room. Moments later a handsome man with black hair and red eyes entered the room. He looked like he could have been in his early 40s but you never knew with magicals. „Well now that our little battle has paused I will offer you an opportunity Lord Burke. Join me and your whole family's lifes will be spared. Think of what you could do with my guidance, think of what you can achieve. Your family's rightful place in Britain would be secured with me as the champion of the purebloods. Don't you see the rising threat of the increasing number of mudbloods in our country? Their the scum of society and more and more of them demand equal treatment. What's next? Equality between Wizards and Muggles? No I shall not let that happen. Lord Burke I ask you to stay true to your roots and join me. And if you don't want to place yourself in danger by fighting our common enemies directly aid our cause indirectly. You could provide monetary support, help us preserve our way of life in the Wizengamot and even offer vital knowledge of your beautiful library here. Think about it." Voldemort said charmingly with both sides hanging onto his every word. Every Burke in the room looked to Bisonis who thought about the points Voldemort made. They were afraid to die but they would follow their pater familias into death if they had to. The kids were safe after all.

„Very nice speech Voldemort and I agree with some of your points but you are a fool if you believed a Burke would ever bow down to you. You made an enemy of the Burkes the moment you attacked Hogsmeade. No we will never bow down to a maniac like you. You may wipe my family out today but someday there will be someone that causes you to fall. Dark Lords always do. It might be Dumbledore, Sayre, Black, Bones or someone else but you will fall someday mark my words" Bisonis Burke bravely said as he looked death in the eye. His family looked resigned but determined to put up a good fight and everyone of them edged closer together. Bartholomeus had healed his wife's injuries by now and both of them stood close together as they tried to enjoy what may very well be their final moments together. Voldemort looked at the group with a sad expression before he finally said „Very well then you have just doomed everyone of your family in this room. It's fortunate then I know one of you very well and that he's currently not in this room. Yes Bertram shall make a fine new Lord Burke". Those words shocked Bisonis so much he was nearly hit by a severing curse as the fight began anew. His grandson Bertram had betrayed him?

'Oh Merlin's balls he is with the kids. Bastard.' he thought before he had to focus on the battle as Voldemort personally began to attack him.

**Scene Break**

Bartemius Crouch Snr. walked out of the floo together with Amanda Brocklehurst, Robert and his son Lewis Dawlish and 6 others that had offered to be part of the relief team. As soon as they had gotten their respective letters from Bisonis they held an emergency meeting in Crouch Manor immediately and created a relief team to help out their allies while their families' prepared their respective houses for an assault in case You-Know-Who seeked to extinguish the entire alliance. They were surprised to find the floo intact and were prepared for an ambush as they walked through. This proved to be quite useful as they did indeed walk into an ambush the moment they entered Burke Manor. The lower ranked death eaters must have not expected such a formidable force however as they fell quickly to the relief team's wands.

„Secure the entrance hall next to this room and then search through the Manor floor by floor. The Burkes must be here somewhere. Let's go to the living room on the first floor first. I doubt they chose the location of the battle there but" Bartemius told the others as he was interrupted by Albus Dumbledore walking out of the floor. The relief team gaped as more and more people entered the entrance hall until the relief team found 7 people besides them in the room. The two groups regarded eachother with suspicion while Dumbledore smiled in amusement but stayed silent to give the others time to realise what was transpiring here. Bartemius was the first to regain his composure „Well well well if it isn't one Albus Dumbledore personally in Burke Manor. It is unlikely your and your friends appearence here right as the Burkes are attacked is a coincidence, isn't it?" Bartemius asked one of his rivals in the Ministry. Bartemius would never internally accept that if Dumbledore truly wished to be the ruler of Magical Britain he would have gained such a position decades ago. No his pride prevented that.

„I guess it isn't Bartemius but relax we are all on the same side here. You hopefully don't think I would ever work together with someone as vile as Voldemort?" Dumbledore said as he raised an eyebrow and Bartemius didn't have to think about his answer for more than a second.

„No I suppose you wouldn't, You-Know-Who's course of action isn't your style and he seems to go against everything you stand for. Very well then, lads we have just found ourselves allies in our relief effort and if I had to guess those allies might just be very capable ones" Bartemius told his friends who relaxed at those words, the atmosphere in the room generally improved considerably.

„Trust me Bartemius, I would never send somebody to fight if I didn't believe they were a capable witch or wizard" Dumbledore said with a reassuring smile.

„Then that is even better, any idea on where the Burkes might have chosen the location of the battle?" Bartemius asked knowing that Dumbledore might know the answer. It would save a lot of time and might save a life or two even as Bartemius was aware that the possibility of everyone of them and the Burkes surviving this was near null. But hope always dies last and that hope still remained in him.

„It has been some time since I happened to visit here last time but I am certain the layout has remained the same since 1969. From what I gathered the areas that they'd be able to defend the best would be the living room on this floor, the basement, Lord Burke's personal study on the fourth floor or the library on the fifth floor" Dumbledore said greatly surprising Bartemius.

„I guess it isn't a surprise you are familiar with the layout of Burke Manor but Merlin how do you know about the basement? It remains hidden at all times and the only way I know about it is because aunt Pia told me about it" conceded Bartemius.

„Bartemius I am 95 years old, you don't think I am able to see past those rather simple wards?" Dumbledore asked with a light grin reminding Bartemius that he had the defeater of Grindelwald in front of him and not just another old man.

„But we digress Bartemius and wasting precious time" Dumbledore continued and Bartemius felt slightly chastised, Dumbledore had that kind of effect on even the most mature man.

„You're right of course. The basement is probably not the location they'd choose, so the living room, then the study and finally the library?" Bartemius asked his newfound ally.

„By your lead Bartemius"
