Ch12
"Yay we are all brothers," Tyson said with joy as he rolled in his bed.
"For the last time Tyson I'm not actually a son of Poseidon," Magnus said with a sigh. Tyson had taken the bed next to his while Percy was across from them in his bed getting ready for the day.
"Magnus do you want to play with the ponies?" Tyson asked with a big smile on his face.
"Maybe later right now we have to get ready for the day," he said trying not to sound irritated. Tyson was a nice guy and all but he liked to talk more than he cared for.
"Ok, I want to be with my brothers," Tyson said with a big smile.
He sighed as he grabbed his equipment, "Are you ready Percy?" He asked his friend who was getting ready and looked kind of depressed.
"Yeah I am," Percy grumbled as he got up and walked with him. The three of them walked around the camp while people gave Tyson some bad looks.
"Um Percy don't mind them Tyson is a nice guy if they don't like him that's their problem," he said trying to cheer Percy up. Yeah he found Tyson a little annoying he was a good guy deep down and knew that he wanted to just be friends with him and Percy.
They went to practice riding pegasi which wasn't easy since they were scared of Tyson. Magnus was trying to calm his down while Tyson was crying because they wouldn't let him near them. "Gosh what a monster," some passersby girls from Aphrodite Cabin said as they laughed and gave Tyson the skank eye.
"Hey mind your own damn business," he snapped angrily glaring at the girls who just laughed and walked away. He looked at Percy who was arguing with the horses unsuccessfully and sighed as the horses would not let Tyson ride them.
So they ended up flying their horses alone in the sky while Tyson tried to play with the horses on the ground (they were scared to death of him to go near him). "Hey Percy are you ok?" He asked as they were up in the air flying. He noticed that lately that Percy had been wanting to hang out with him alone, and he felt it was more than just to get away from Tyson or the problems with Grover.
"Magnus why would my father do this to me?" Percy said as he watched Tyson scare a bunch of horses and cry. "It so frustrating trying to get people to not see me as the brother of a monster."
Magnus looked at Percy and felt sorry for his friend, "Well I don't know why. Maybe he is important to your dad and he knows that you can take care of him. Oh about that message from Grover what was about?" Last night Percy was explaining something about a dream he had about Grover through their empathy link.
"Oh yeah, he sounded like he needs help, we should leave as soon as we can," Percy said as he explained the dream to him. When he was done Magnus had a bad feeling inside of him as he thought of Grover.
"Don't worry we will help him, he will be ok when we save him," he said trying to reassure Percy even though he was also worried, Grover would only send that kind of message if he were in trouble.
"Yeah I hope so too," Percy said with a dark look on his face. "Oh do you still want to do that chariot thing with me or Annabeth?"
"Oh um I haven't thought much about it, lets go ask her later. If anything we can split up since Tyson is with us," he said as he watched Tyson grab a Pegasus and play with it roughly causing it to neigh loudly as if in pain and kick around as if it were in some kind of trap. "We should stop that."
"Yeah its in pain," Percy said as they landed their pegasi on the ground. They managed to convince Tyson to let the horse go and that they will play a different game. Tyson reluctantly let the poor horse go and Percy had to make sure that it was ok before they left to do their other daily activities.
However, when they talked to Annabeth a fight soon broke out between her and Percy over Tyson. "Stop calling him a monster he saved my life for goodness sakes," Percy said.
"Well he technically is and I wouldn't trust one of them, they are deceitful liars," She said angrily.
"No he isn't stop treating him like that. What do you have against him anyways outside of him being a cyclops," Percy yelled back. "You are treating him like he is such a horrible thing. Magnus doesn't mind him."
Crap he thought as he felt his cousin's eyes on him. "Oh really?" she said coolly staring at him with her hard gaze. "Magnus what do you think about cyclops?"
"I um …" he looked at both of them who were glaring at him and at each other trying to prove a point come on guys don't make me choose sides. "I actually don't have a problem with Tyson he is a nice guy."
Annabeth sighed and stared at him in disbelief, "Figures. You know what if you guys love him so much why don't you three work on the chariot yourself," she said as she stormed off.
"Oh come on Annabeth don't be like that," he protested but his cousin only glared at both of them as she turned around and left.
"Fine maybe we will," Percy yelled back at her.
Crap she is angry at me again he thought as he watched his cousin storm off.
Their one relief was with Beckendorf who loved Tyson and was patient with him. "Hey Magnus why does your cousin hate cyclops so much," he asked they helped reforge some weapons for Beckendorf.
Magnus sighed as he watched Beckendorf work with Tyson. "When we got here, on the way here we were trapped by a cyclops. We got away though Thalia was turned into a tree, I personally got over it but it appears that she did not. Well to be honest I never got along with Thalia so maybe her sacrifice doesn't affect me as much," he said as he looked up at the sky.
"Wow that's crazy," Percy said. "Why aren't you afraid of them?"
"Not sure, I just got over it I guess. Wolves still get to me though," He said. It was true he was still terrified of them, large dogs for the most part too.
After lunch, they had sword practice together and practiced for a while until it was their time to patrol the border again. Tantalus had discouraged them from patrolling but they still did it anyway, the Camp was their home and they would defend it until their last breaths. They did not see Annabeth for the rest of the day and for the next few days she pretty much ignored them.
So he and Percy continued to work on their chariot. Turns out they both didn't know much about making a chariot so they made one that was super basic and could be pulled by horses. Well this is the best we got he thought as he screwed in one of the wheels while Percy painted the sides. Tyson was busy playing with some sticks as they both worked in silence. I know he is worried about Grover; I am too I hope he is ok he thought as he made sure that the wheel was secured tightly.
As the day of the raise approached Annabeth still was ignoring both of them. He tried to talk to her once but she just walked away and said, "Just go ask Percy." Man what is her problem he sighed as he watched her walk away.
On the day of the chariot race, they realized that their chariot can only hold two people. "Don't worry Tyson just carry any supplies we might need," Percy said as Tyson looked really disappointed.
"Yeah Tyson that is an important job. Without our supplies we can't win," He added trying to make the big guy feel better.
Tyson's face lit up, "Ok! I will do it for my brothers."
They both nodded and thanked Tyson while they got ready for the race. "Oh Magnus I had another dream about Grover," Percy said as he explained what happened. "We should try to win this so that we can go on the quest to save him."
"Yeah I am worried about him too. Lets try and win this so we can go save him. Hopefully, Tantalus isn't a dick about it," He said he finished working on the wheels.
"Yeah I am getting tired of him. I want Chiron back," Percy said as he called Tyson over and had him check the wheels.
You and me both Percy he thought as they both did the finishing touches on the chariot.
Before the race started they tried to tell Annabeth about Percy's dreams about Grover but she paid them no mind and thought that they were just trying to make her distract her.
"What the hell is her problem," Percy said in frustration as they got into their chariot.
"I don't know man she is still pissed let's try talking to her later," he said as they got ready for the race to start.
When the race started Tyson kept up with their chariot as it ran. All was going well; they deflected some arrows and attempts to push them off the road. They were neck and neck with Annabeth when suddenly there was a loud screeching sound from above them.
All of them looked up and saw a bunch of large birds heading towards them. "Watch out those are Stymphalian birds!" Annabeth yelled.
"Crap," he swore as he activated his shield and blocked the claws of one of the birds. Percy took out the bird before it could fly off. "Thanks," he said as he and Percy stopped their carriage.
"Hey Tyson can you help us with those birds?" Percy asked as he swung his sword at the birds.
"Ok! I will help my brothers!" Tyson said with enthusiasm as he grabbed a big branch and started swinging it madly hitting various birds.
He drew his sword and he saw Annabeth grab her dagger. They both fended off the birds that tried to attack them. He looked over and saw the birds attacking other chariots with the other campers stopping and helping to defeat them. Magnus slashed at the birds while doing his best to avoid the attacks. "Annabeth look out," he said as a bird attempted to lunge at her from behind.
Annabeth turned around just in time and was able to avoid being attacked and stabbed it with her knife. "Thanks," she said. Percy and Tyson helped them clear up the last of the birds but by then someone had already won the race. The three of them watched as Tantalus declared Clarisse the winner much to their disappointment.
Percy and Annabeth tried to explain that the race had been interrupted by the birds. Yet Tantalus being the ass he is blamed it on all of them for disrupting the race. "Your horrible driving and that Cyclops must have provoked them," he said glaring at them. They protested buy he would hear none of it.
He then punished them by making them all clean the dishes. Good thing they had Tyson who could wash them in the lava without being burned. The rest of them had to wear protective gloves so that they didn't burn themselves. He and Percy made a temporary truce with Annabeth who agreed to listen to them, their dislike of Tantalus was a unifying factor for them.
"I really can't stand that man," he sighed as they washed the dishes.
"Me either," his cousin mumbled as she checked over some plates.
"We should be the ones going on that quest. We have to save Grover,' Percy said looking determined. They explained to Annabeth about the dreams and she seemed to believe and forgive them a bit more, though he could tell that his cousin was still distant about something.
"That will be easier said than done," Annabeth said as she rested against a table. "She doesn't really care for any of us and you know her pride."
"Yeah those kids in Ares Cabin are full of it," he said with a sigh. His hands were already burning and his body was already sore from fighting those birds.
"Well it won't hurt to ask," Percy said with a determined look. "If worse comes to worst we will just think of something else to do." Both of them nodded at Percy, they would help their friend even if Tantalus doesn't allow them to.
Tantalus had thrown a big feast in Clarisse's honor. They tried their best to talk to him about them going on a quest but he couldn't hear it. This despite them having important information.
"I will not hear it," Tantalus snapped at them. "Clarisse will go on the quest and only she will decide who gets to go with her. Frankly, you lot don't deserve to go after your horrible performance today and your bad attitudes."
"Clarisse," Percy said as he tried to reason with her.
"I will go on this quest," She said with determination as her cabinmates cheered her. "You went on the last one let us have the glory for once," she said as she and Percy glared at each other.
"Come on Percy we will think of something else," Annabeth said calmly. Percy reluctantly nodded and they left the feast to go back to their cabins.
They tried to brainstorm things they could do to save Grover but no ideas came to their head. So reluctantly they went to sleep and decided to think of another way in the morning. Magnus felt himself fall asleep right away as he hit the pillow. However, during the middle of the night, his eyes shot open. "Help!" said a voice that sounded like Percy's.
He immediately sat up in bed and saw that Percy's bed was empty. He looked and saw that Tyson was also up. "Magnus Percy is gone," he said with a worried look. "I heard him calling for help."
"Me too lets go look for him," he said as he got dressed quickly. They both snuck out of the cabin and they hear the sound again. "It sounds like it is coming from the beach," he said as they both made their way to the beach as discreetly as possible.
"Magnus," said a voice that nearly made him jump. He turned and around and sighed in relief as he saw that it was Annabeth. "Did you hear Percy calling for help two?" She asked also dressed as if she were ready to go out.
"Yeah its sounds like it is coming from the beach. Lets go check it out," he said. Annabeth nodded and went to the beach and found Percy standing there.
"Percy are you ok? What are you doing here?" Annabeth asked as Percy turned to them in surprise.
"What? I was just jogging here when I ran into Hermes," he explained as he told them that Lord Hermes had visited him and told him to go save Grover. "The problem is," he said awkwardly avoiding their eyes. "He insisted only three go and said I can choose who goes," he said looking at the three duffel bags of supplies.
Magnus looked and Annabeth and then at Tyson and an awkward silence fell among them. He looked at his cousin and saw that she was very much determined to go and that Tyson was expecting to go already. Annabeth's eyes looked determined to go and he swore he saw fear in them too she wanted a quest and this was her chance to be in one.
Even though she was a tag along on their last quest he knew how much it meant to her to go on this quest. He then looked up at Tyson and knew that they couldn't leave him alone because most of the campers hated him. Well maybe I should let her have this one he thought as he looked at his cousin and then at Percy who very conflicted as if he were thinking about making a hard choice. We don't have much time, we could be spotted.
"I'll stay," he said softly causing Annabeth and Percy to look at him in shock.
"What? You don't have to. I mean I know you want to save Grover too," Annabeth said looking at the water to avoid his gaze. "I mean you two both did a good job in the last quest too so I don't see why you shouldn't go," she said trying to keep the emotion out of her voice. Percy stood in silence as he too seemed to be debating who to bring.
"It's alright Annabeth, you saved our asses a bunch of times too. If anything you will be needed on this quest. Besides if we leave Tyson he will suffer alone here. It is best if I stay," he said.
Annabeth and Percy looked at him in shock. For a moment there was silence before Percy spoke up. "Well we should get going if you want to stay that is your decision," he said with a sigh.
"It is," he said firmly. Percy smiled at him and he saw relief in his friend's eyes at not having to choose between the two of them again. He looked over at his cousin who looked surprised and happy that she was going on this quest.
"Well good luck you guys," he said. "Stay safe man," Percy said as he grabbed his duffel bag. The two fist bumped each other and he could tell that Percy was relieved at the choice he made. Percy smiled at him as if to thank him for making that choice and he smiled back to let him know that he was fine with it. He said goodbye to Tyson who appeared to be happy to go as well.
"Yeah Magnus stay safe," Annabeth said as she hugged him tightly. "Thank you," she whispered into his ear. Magnus only nodded before saying goodbye to Tyson who smiled at him. "You should go back so no one catches you," she said seriously.
"Yeah I should," he said with a sigh as he said one final goodbye before running into the trees back to the camp. He heard the sound of the harpies that patrolled the area crap I hope they get out of here safely he thought as he gripped his sword and ran as fast as he could back to camp.
