Ch15
Magnus' body felt as if he had been running a marathon and hit a wall. He looked around and saw that he was in the infirmary of the camp and that it was dark.
"Oh good you are up," Mr. D said from the corner.
Magnus turned and saw Mr. D standing in the corner staring at him with a cool look. "You have been out for a few days now; Clarisse had just finished her quest and has brought the fleece back.
"That's good so there haven't been any more attacks?" He asked his voice feeling raspy and dry.
"They are decreasing in number. Thanks for saving my sons by the way, they have been coming every day to see how you are doing. Your other friends too," Mr. D said as he sipped some coke.
"Ah ok, I hope they are well," He said as he sat up.
"Don't overexert yourself, and yes they are both ok," Mr. D said as he got up. "Rest well Mango Cheese, don't worry I doubt those wolves will come again.
Magnus was going to ask what he meant but Mr. D quickly disappeared. He usually calls me barbarian for some reason, I guess now I have a nickname with him too. Well at least they are safe he thought as he fell to his pillow and rested. He looked up at the ceiling and slowly felt himself go back to sleep.
When he awoke he found Michael Yew and Will Solace replacing the bandages on his arm. "Oh thank Gods you are up," Will said when he noticed he was up. Magnus barely had time to react as Will wrapped his arms around him.
"Hey Will nice to see you too you are squeezing me too tight," Magnus said as he felt Will loosen his grip on him and smiled at him.
"You had us really worried," Will said looking at him with his bright eyes. "You collapsed and you had all these broken bones and you passed out."
"Its ok Will thanks for the help can I have something to drink?" He asked his throat was really dry.
Michael gave him a glass of water along with some nectar and as soon as he drank them he was feeling slightly better. "You will rest for a bit longer, your body was exhausted," Michael said in a serious tone.
"Ok I won't worry," he said with a small laugh. Michael sighed as Will smiled at him. "Oh is it true Clarisse came back?"
Will nodded, "Yeah she came back about a day ago and brought the fleece with her. She placed it on Thalia's tree and it has been getting better. The barrier has been returning to full strength and the monsters are coming less frequently."
"That's good, have those wolves come back yet?" He asked trying not to hide the worry in his voice.
Will shook his head as Michael went off to do some other task. "We haven't seen them since, it was weird I wonder where they were from. I haven't seen any type of monster like that before, no one else has been able to figure out their identity yet either. Not even anyone from the Athena cabin and Mr. D refuses to talk about it and says it was probably some old creature."
Magnus nodded, I doubt it something about them made me feel uneasy he thought, he didn't want to admit it but those wolves were after him.
"Anyway, I'll let the others know that you are awake. Castor and Pollux would want to see you, they felt really bad," Will said.
"Ah ok, well I'll see them if they come," he said Will nodded and hugged him before leaving him in peace.
The rest of the day he spent it in bed as he recovered his strength. Beckendorf came to visit him and the two chatted before the Dionysus twins came. They were both apologetic but he reassured them that they were not at fault. He was bored out of his mind in bed and was glad that Beckendorf quickly got him his books to read since he was pretty bored sitting in the hospital all alone.
However, while he was reading someone else came in, "So it is true you can read unlike the rest of us." Magnus looked up and saw Clarisse walk into the room.
"Hey how did the quest go?" He asked as he set his book down. Clarisse looked tired though her face was still as strong-willed as ever.
Clarisse pulled up a chair and sat next to his bed. "It was crazy but I did it," she sighed. "Your cousin and Percy are alright," she said as she told him about the quest and about how she got the fleece. "Well that is all my side of it your cousin and Percy probably have their own story," she said with a sigh. "Thanks by the way."
Magnus looked up at her. "For what?"
"For staying and defending the camp," Clarisse said looking at him with a neutral look. "I mean I know you would've wanted to go and protect your cousin and be with Percy, but you chose and stayed and because of that you were able to help defend the camp."
"Thanks, yeah it wasn't easy and I wanted to go but well I just felt it wasn't my quest. But I don't regret it, I enjoyed my time here in camp."
Clarisse nodded, "Yeah I would've left too if one of my friends was kept captive," she sighed as she got up. "Thanks for defending this camp, you being here helped people stay motivated. Now that things are getting serious we need all the help we can get for whatever the future throws at us. Rest well Chase," she said as she headed out of the room.
"You too," he said as he rested back in his bed and went back to reading his book. I wonder what will happen in the future? What are the meaning of those wolves his mind hurt when he thought about the wolves, he didn't know what they were but he would not let his fear of them get in the way of him protecting those he loves.
Since he was a fast healer he stayed only a few days in the hospital. By then he had received the news that Tantalus had been sent back to where he came from and that Chiron was on his way to return to his former post.
Apparently, the fleece was working its magic and the patrols were getting less and less as Thalia's tree kept on getting better by the day. As the days passed by Percy and Annabeth also returned along with Tyson and Grover.
"Magnus!" Percy called as he ran up to him. The two embraced each other, "How have you been man?" He asked with a bright smiled on his face.
"Good, its been hectic but good. How was your quest?" He asked as he then turned to Annabeth. Annabeth walked up to him and punched him rather hard in the arm. "Ouch what was that for?"
"Malcolm told me you were in the hospital again," she said with a serious look in her eyes. "What did I tell you about getting into trouble? Malcolm told me you would help patrol and help out at the hospital like every day."
"Sorry it was an accident," he said raising his hands in defeat.
"Magnus I am back!" Tyson said waving at him with a big grin on his face.
"Hey Tyson it's nice to see you too," he said as Percy and Annabeth recounted their journey in the Poseidon Cabin. When Percy and Annabeth finished talking it was already night. "Wow sounds like you guys had a great time," he said as they headed off to lunch together.
"Yeah it was great," Percy said when they both sat at the Poseidon table. "Oh thanks for letting Annabeth go by the way. We had a good time together and it worked out well in the end."
"No problem man, I wanted to save Grover too and I am glad everyone is safe," he said as he ate his food.
Percy sighed, "Yeah I was really nervous to be honest when Hermes said I could only take two people, he was really insistent like really insistent," he said with a sigh. "I honestly didn't know who to choose and I could tell right away that both of you wanted to go. Then there was Tyson and I couldn't leave him behind you know."
"Yeah I understand that also my cousin is really determined and will not let something go," he said as they got up and made their sacrifices. "But don't worry I am sure we can do other quests together in the future."
Percy grinned at him as he nodded, "Sure man, and if you want you can come and visit me. I'll ask my mom, won't worry my mom wont mind. You are going to school in the city too right?"
"Um sure sounds fun and yeah I am," he said he didn't know why but felt a little nervous, he had never really been to another person's house to hang out before. The thought both intrigued and frightened him at the same time.
"Cool sounds fun, I don't have any friends outside of camp so I am usually bored when I am not helping my mom out," Percy said grinning while looking to the side in embarrassment.
"Don't worry I don't either," he said as they both laughed.
He continued to catch up with Percy and his cousin throughout the night though he did not tell them about his dreams or the wolves since he did not want to worry them He and Percy then found out that Tyson would be leaving to do an internship with his father Poseidon down in the ocean and wont be returning back to the camp. Magnus and Percy both felt a bit sad since they both came to like Tyson who was a good guy deep down.
About a day later Chiron called him into his office alone. When he arrived he saw the centaur sitting at his desk reading a book. "Hello Chiron did you want to see me?" He asked though he had a good idea of what they were about to talk about.
Chiron looked up at him and smiled, "Hello Magnus have a seat yes we have some things we need to discuss," he said with a serious look on his face.
Magnus gulped as if he were a child being punished by a teacher at school as he sat across Chiron and looked at him. "I heard you helped out a lot these past few weeks," Chiron said getting to the point. Magnus only nodded as he looked up at the centaur, his eyes were calm and he saw no ill intent in them. Chiron sighed, "Magnus I also heard about the white wolves, do you know what they are?"
He shook his head, "No though I've had dreams about them and they did kill my mom," he said as he explained the story of his mom's death and the various dreams he had about the wolves. When he finished he swore he saw a dark look spread across Chiron's face but the centaur quickly hid it. "Do you know what it means? What were those wolves?"
Chiron shifted in his seat. "Magnus I don't know if I can say. I swore an oath on the River Styx to not talk about it. But I will say this, you will face many different and distinct challenges in your life." The centaur who looked at him with a sympathetic look. "Nevertheless though, know that you are always welcome here at came and I will always teach you if you wish."
Magnus didn't say anything and he only nodded as Chiron smiled at him. "Whatever the fates have in store for you I am sure you will accomplish great things. You are a talented boy and you will accomplish many great things I know it," he said in a reassuring tone. "I also recommend you stay at camp as much as you can, it may be safer for you here."
"Thanks Chiron," he said as they were interrupted by a knock at the door. Chiron answered it and was told that something was wrong with Thalia's tree.
Not again Magnus thought as they both raced to the tree. When they got there they saw that the tree was shining brightly and when the light disappeared a familiar black haired girl lay on the ground. "Thalia," he whispered as he saw the girl in front of him looking not a day older than when he last saw her.
Well things are definitely going to get more interesting around here he thought as he saw Annabeth go up and hug her former friend who was in shock. But just in case I may take Percy up on his offer to hang out at his place, just in case.
He went up to Thalia who looked at him in confusion, "Magnus? Is that you?" She asked in surprise.
"Yeah its me Thalia," he said as watched Thalia look him up and down in shock that the little boy she knew was bigger.
"You still look like a brat," she said she said with a smirk.
"And you still look like a punk," he said with a smile. Yeah I think I will take Percy up on his offer.
Meanwhile in Olympus Zeus was contemplating his next course of action. The news that Norse monsters attacked their camp did not sit well with him or the other Olympians. If we were in the Middle Ages I would have sent Asgard my lightning bolt for this insolence he thought as looked over his camp.
"Maybe it was an accident of some kind or some miscommunication, lets not summon the other Olympians now," his wife Hera said as she sat next to him. He had debated summoning the other Gods even Hades but a lot of things were happening and resources were spread thin and only a few of the Olympians were present now.
"I agree Lord Father," Athena said sitting on her throne. "It would be best that we just send Lord Hermes as a messenger and deliver a formal protest. It may just be some sort of misunderstanding."
Zeus looked at her and sighed, "Yes I was thinking the same thing. Hermes!" He called out loudly.
The messenger god appeared in front of him and bowed, "What is it Lord Zeus?"
"I want you to go to Asgard and convey our displeasure that their wolves were near our camp," he said in a serious tone. "If possible do an Iris message so that I can speak with Lord Odin personally." He had a history with Odin, the two were the heads of the strongest pantheons in the Western World and the two often clashed for the supremacy of their pantheons and the cultures that they represented. Though things have been calm now for a while between Asgard and Olympus, still though I cannot allow this insult to go ignored.
"Yes Lord Zeus I will do go immediately," Hermes said as he did a quick bow and left.
Zeus sighed as he rested on his throne, "With all of this the last thing we need is problems with Asgard."
He then turned to Athena, "Athena that boy who I viewed help kill the wolves he shares the same last name as your daughter. Is he another son of yours?"
Athena shook her head, "No, they are cousins."
"Who is his Godly parent?" He asked he noticed the Goddess look away slightly.
"He has not claimed him yet. Poseidon allows him to stay in his cabin with his son since they are close and he helped Percy Jackson on his quest," Athena said calmly. "I have met the boy father, do not worry he is loyal to Olympus," she said reassuringly.
Zeus looked at Athena, "Fine, something about him seems different though. But I could care less as long as he is loyal to Olympus I could care less about his parentage." He honestly did not care who the boy's parent was though thought something was off about him he did not care to think about it at the moment; after all he couldn't really tell the demigods apart half of the time.
Athena nodded as she kept a straight face, "We need every ally we can get in this upcoming war father. War will come to us whether we like it or not, we must not allow ourselves to get distracted."
Zeus nodded, "True but I cannot stand by while the honor of our pantheon and the safety of our children is jeopardized by the Norse. We haven't been at war with Asgard in ages but I will not allow such a brazen attack again."
Athena nodded, "I understand father but maybe it was unintentional we must not jump to conclusions yet."
"Yes dear let us wait until we have more information," Hera said from her throne. He noticed his wife was gripping her chair tightly, she did not like the Norse or at least the fact that he may have visited Valhalla and had some fun with Freya and some Valkyries as a part of a peace offer and his wife couldn't do much of anything. It was fun though I won't deny that he thought as he laughed in his head.
"Yes we have had peace with the Norse for a while. We should not jeopardize it yet until we have all the answers. In the meantime we should look out for anything suspicious," He said as he looked down at his realm. "But we should remember who our real threat is."
"True father we must see the bigger picture," Athena said. "And now that your daughter has come back we have to be even more careful."
Zeus noticed his wife's face twitch in anger as she glared at the mention of his daughter. He let out a sigh as he looked down at her, "True, that is true. Things are more complicated than ever now," he sighed. He cared about his daughter deeply but was unsettled by the fact that now there were two children of the big three. The fates are tricky just what do they have in store he thought as he watched his daughter settle into his cabin in the camp.
"We must be prepared for everything that comes to us," he said as he stood up. "The upcoming battles we will face will not be easy." Athena and Hera both nodded as he turned his back and disappeared.
