A plane was soaring in the sky as it was traveling to its destination when the pilots swerved out of the way of an upcoming spacecraft that nearly collided with them. Another spacecraft appeared and started to fire on the first one.
The spacecraft that was being fired upon was the Starjammer, which was trying to avoid being shot down by a Shi'ar ship.
The Starjammer passed a cruise ship and then an airport as it attempted to outrun the Shi'ar starcruiser. It wasn't until the Starjammer passed over a city that it finally got hit.
Back at the institute, Cyclops was up early as he was dressed in uniform and ready for a morning danger room session. But first, he needed some coffee. Arriving at the kitchen, he was greeted by Danny, who had already made some.
"Coffee?" Danny offered his friend.
Scott nodded as he poured himself some. He smirked as he noticed Danny's face. It had been covered in lipstick marks.
Cyclops chuckled. "Looks like you had some fun."
Danny grinned. "Yeah, Rogue's been very affectionate since the Dark Phantom Phoenix incident."
"And I'm sure you have no complaints about that." Scott said.
Danny smirked. "Nope."
The two enjoyed their coffee and the quiet air before Scott turned to leave.
"I'm going to have an early Danger Room session. Did you want to join?"
Danny shrugged. "Sure. I've got nothing better to do."
The two were in the underground corridors when they heard a call ringing in the War Room.
"Wonder who that could be?" Danny asked as they went to answer it.
"Well, it can't be an X-Man." Scott said. "They don't get up this early."
"Maybe it's Gambit who's come back from a long night." Danny suggested.
"It wouldn't be the first time." Scott acknowledged.
"Good morning." Scott greeted as the screen showed a Shi'ar.
"X-Men, do you read me?" The Shi'ar asked.
Danny sighed, thinking that the Shi'ar still weren't over his little rampage as the Dark Phantom Phoenix. "Look, man, I repaired the solar system, ok? What more do you want?"
"It has nothing to do with that." The Shi'ar replied. "I am Commander Raknar of the Shi'ar Intergalactic Patrol, under the authority of Empress Lilandra." He showed a badge to prove his claim.
"What brings you to our planet, commander?" Scott asked.
"Pursuit of a criminal vessel." Raknar said. "We do not know why the criminal vessel fled across half the galaxy to this spot. Be forewarned: its crew is..."
"Heavily armed and dangerous?" Danny finished.
Raknar raised an eyebrow. "How did you know?"
"It's one of the biggest cliché sayings." Danny said as the communication ended.
"Let's go!" Scott as he raced out of the room.
"Just let me leave a note for Rogue." Danny said. "Don't want her to wake up worrying about where I am."
Corsair was piloting the damaged Starjammer to the institute.
"Give me some attitude, old girl." He urged as he tried to avoid crashing into the mansion. "Blowing up their house is no way to say hello."
He managed to crash-land it in the river behind the mansion.
Danny and Cyclops made their way over when Scott heard Raknar over his communicator.
"X-Men, stay back!" Raknar ordered. "Let us deal with the survivors!"
"If we don't get to them fast, there won't be any survivors." Cyclops replied.
Danny flew to the ship and picked up Corsair before bringing him back to land.
Cyclops made his way to Corsair. "Are you all right? I..." He stopped as he realized who this was.
"Corsair?" Scott exclaimed in shock and anger. "You're the Shi'ar criminal?"
Corsair coughed. "You've been talking to Raknar. Sorry to drop my problems on your doorstep, but I need your help."
"Typical deadbeat dad." Danny whispered to Cyclops. "They only come to visit you when their ass is in trouble."
Scott narrowed his eyes at Corsair. "I doubt Lilandra would look kindly on our harboring a fugitive from her Shi'ar officers."
"We just got through a trial of combat. We don't want to go through another."
"Fine. Don't help." Corsair said. "But give me back my dog tags. They're all that's left of my family."
Danny was about to hand them back when Scott snatched them out of his hand. "Family?" Scott said bitterly. "What family? You mean me and my brother. Let's not forget my mother. Were you really shaken up by her death, or were you just happy that you had no other responsibilities tying you down?"
"Your mother?" Corsair repeated quietly. He stared at Scott in disbelief. "Scott? This can't be."
Scott wasn't as excited as his father. "Where have you been all my life? How come you're not dead? Why did you leave me?"
"You might want to explain that and fast." Danny said as he saw the arrival of a Shi'ar ship. "Your pursuers are here."
"Cyclops, you have done well." Raknar praised over Scott's communicator. "Thank you. We will take over from here."
"Hold your troopers." Cyclops demanded. "I need a moment first."
"Yeah, nobody wants to visit their father in prison." Danny muttered.
"The pirate Corsair is wanted for kidnapping and attempted murder." Raknar stated.
"I understand, but I must have a few minutes with him." Scott requested.
"And anyone who helps him resist arrest will be treated as a criminal as well." Raknar threatened.
"Where are the rest of the X-Men?" Corsair asked, thinking they could help him out.
"They're off helping someone who isn't wanted throughout the galaxy." Cyclops retorted.
"Also, Rogue is sleeping." Danny revealed. "And I don't feel like waking her up just to help bail you out of jail."
Why are you here?" Scott interrogated.
"I'm being set up!" Corsair explained. "I thought the X-Men would help me prove it! Looks like I was wrong."
"Hey, don't talk like we're in the wrong, Mr. I'd rather be a space pirate than raise my kids."
The soldiers came down from the ship on hovercrafts and fired at them as they made a run for it.
"Danny, buy me some time." Scott ordered.
"I'll meet you at the monorail." Danny flew up and engaged the soldiers in an aerial battle as he fired ecto-blasts at them.
Scott pulled out a switch and pressed a button, activating the monorail. He then jumped down a secret hatch that opened, with Corsair following. Danny then phased through to join the father-son duo as they all got on the monorail.
"What are they up to?" Raknar demanded from his ship. He turned to his subordinates. "Initiate a full spectrum scan of the area. Now!"
"Where are we going?" Corsair asked as they rode the monorail.
"To a mini-jet." Scott answered. "If you're telling the truth, we'll use it to get out of here."
"The truth?" Corsair was hurt by his son's doubt in his innocence. "Son, how can you be..."
"Don't ever call me that!" Cyclops interrupted. "For twenty years I dreamed about my father, a man to look up to, a hero who sacrificed his life to save his family! It was your family you sacrificed! You threw us away so you could go knock around the galaxy!"
"That's not what happened!" Corsair argued.
"No?" Scott retorted. "Did I imagine the orphanage? The foster homes where nobody wanted me? Tell me, Dad, am I making this up?"
Danny sighed. "This is going to be a long day."
"We have them, commander." One of Raknar's subordinates reported as they scanned the surroundings. "An underground facility extending from the residence."
"Blow it open!" Raknar commanded. "All units, bring him to me, dead or alive!"
The ship fired on the ground above the monorail, prompting the heroes to stop it and get off.
They made their way to where the jets were located, only for three robots to drop through the ceiling.
Corsair and Scott opened fire on them, but their attacks did nothing as the robots blasted them.
Danny destroyed the three with a ghost-ray disc and phased himself and the other two into one of the jets.
The ghost hybrid then went to the pilot's seat and took off.
"Thank you, Danny." Scott said as he took control. "If we stay low, it'll take their sensors a while to find us."
"I could make us all and the jet invisible." Danny offered.
Scott shook his head. "No. I think it's best that you conserve your energy for now, just in case."
"I'd better take the stick." Corsair said. "You might not like everything I'm gonna tell you."
Corsair explained his story to Scott.
"Twenty years ago, we were flying home from a camping trip in Alaska. You, your brother, your mother, and I. I was flying our old De Havilland Mosquito, when a starcraft began shadowing us from above. It opened fire. We only had seconds before the fuel tanks were gonna blow! The flames had destroyed all our parachutes but one. I strapped you into that chute, and we tied little Alex into your arms."
Scott listened on as he heard his father explain. He was honestly surprised to hear emotion in his voice. Maybe he really did care.
"Your mother and I said what we thought would be our last goodbyes to you." Corsair continued. "We pushed you to safety, watching after you, praying you'd make it down all right. But as your parachute began to burn, we had little hope. Just as our fuel tanks went, your mother and I were transported into the attacker's ship. Imprisoned, collected as biological specimens for the Shi'ar. It looked hopeless. Until the Starjammer crew sprung us loose."
Scott took in this information. He felt several emotions at once. Sadness at the reminder of that tragic incident. Rage at the individuals who tore apart his family and a bit of happiness at the knowledge that his father hadn't abandoned him. But there was still one question that he had.
"What happened to my mother?"
"Destroyed before my eyes by the Shi'ar tyrant D'Ken." Corsair said, holding his rage back. "The monster you X-Men helped me defeat.
Scott now held even more anger towards D'Ken. Not just for almost destroying the galaxy and killing his friends, but for taking away his mother.
"As far as I knew, my entire family was gone." Corsair said. "I had no reason to go home."
Scott looked at the dog tags in his hand before handing them to his father. "I think these belong to you."
The Shi'ar ship was scanning the remains of the Starjammer.
"Commander, no one is on board, living or dead." One robot informed Raknar.
"Only Corsair exited the Starjammer at this location." Raknar said before ordering the ship to continue moving.
Scott turned to his father. "If you'd known Alex and I were still alive..."
"Not even the Shi'ar slave pens could have stopped me from finding you!" Corsair assured him.
Danny pointed to the radar. "Hey, I hate to ruin the touching moment, but there's the Shi'ar starcruiser!"
"It's closing fast!" Corsair said as he prepared to land the jet. "Check out your old man!"
They managed to land the jet with only the wing taking damage from colliding with a tree.
"Clear the area, fast!" Corsair ordered as they exited the jet.
On Raknar's ship, one of his subordinates locked on to the trio's location. "We've achieved target lock."
"Fire!" Raknar shouted.
The shot missed them, but the resulting explosion knocked them off their feet.
More robots in hovercrafts came in to apprehend the three.
"If that's the way they want to play it." Scott said as they started to fight back.
"X-Men, I do not know what Corsair told you to gain your support." Raknar said over the intercom. "The witness he abducted knows the location of the Lord Chamberlain's horded fortune."
"Big mouth!" Corsair fired his gun at the machines.
"Corsair wants the girl so she can lead him to the money." Raknar informed them. "Anything else he told you is a self-serving lie."
Scott turned to Corsair. "Is this true?"
Corsair pushed Scott out of the way of an incoming laser. "I saved Jandra because I care about her. But I also have a starship to maintain, and fusion fuel doesn't come cheap!"
"You know, if you wanted us to believe you, you should've left out that last sentence." Danny replied.
"You mean we're out here fighting the Shi'ar police so you can get rich?" Scott shouted. He couldn't believe that his father had put them through all this just to make a couple bucks.
Corsair tried to reason with his son. "Scott, you're not listening to me!"
"Some father!" Scott insulted. "For all I know, the Lord Chamberlain hired you to kill the witness!"
"Guys, can we continue this argument later? Not right now when they're still shooting at us!" Danny asked, as they were still avoiding lasers.
"Danny, find Jandra and keep her safe." Scott ordered. "Corsair took us to this location for a reason, so she should be somewhere around here. I have to find the truth."
Scott raised his hand towards the Shi'ar patrol. "Shi'ar patrol, hold your fire!" Corsair was about to fire at Scott when Scott swiped the gun and pointed it at his father. "Corsair is my prisoner. I'm turning him in."
"Haven't you understood anything I've told you?" Corsair criticized. "The Starjammers are protecting Jandra from these Shi'ar police. They're in with Lord Chamberlain. They're bad cops."
"We'll see Dad." Scott pushed Corsair into the transport. "Get in and shut up. We'll find Jandra, and then we'll talk."
The transport then flew up to the ship.
"The galaxy is in your debt, Cyclops." Raknar praised as the two were in the control room.
"I have agreed to nothing." Scott said. "When we get the girl, we'll see who's lying." The X-Man then activated his communicator. "This is Cyclops. Danny, come in."
"Danny, here." Danny answered. "So far, I haven't found anything. How's it going with your Dad?"
"I handed him over to the Shi'ar. I'm with them now. I'm going to get to the bottom of this. How's the search for Jandra coming?"
"I haven't found any trace yet." Danny replied when a net was thrown on him and he was tackled by Hepzibah. "I found the Starjammers. They're attacking me."
"Surrender now, flying one!" Hepzibah cried before Danny phased out of the net and blasted her into a tree branch.
He then turned to Ch'od and Raza threateningly, his hands glowing with energy.
"There!" Raknar's subordinate said as she tracked the X-Men's communications to find the Starjammers location. "I've got a fix on their location."
Scott was about to leave when he was trapped in a force field.
I apologize, Cyclops, but I can't allow you to interfere." Raknar said before turning to his female subordinate. "Navigator, I leave our guest in your care."
Raknar then entered the room where Corsair was being held prisoner. "Corsair, what a pleasure to see you looking so well. I need to know how you learned that I am the one the Lord Chamberlain hired to dispose of the witness."
"I don't betray friends to murderers like you." Corsair replied.
Raknar smirked. "That's what I was hoping you would say."
Danny was still fighting the Starjammers.
He was confused about their hostility. "What's with you guys? I thought we were cool. We fought together against D'Ken. Remember that?"
"True, though we have maintained communications silence, Corsair's open communicator allowed us to hear everything." Raza said.
"Including Cyclops-son betraying Corsair-father to evil commander! X-Men the ones who act like enemy, not Starjammers!" Hepzibah mentioned.
"If you really did hear everything, you would know that Scott wasn't going to betray Corsair, but find out if he was lying or not." Danny replied. "He didn't know who to believe, the police or the father, who possibly abandoned him. How was he supposed to know who was telling the truth? He needed to see it for himself."
The Starjammers stopped as they considered this.
"This whole thing was caused by a lack of communication." Danny reasoned. "So I suggest we stop fighting and work together."
The Starjammers looked at each other and silently agreed before motioning for Danny to follow them.
They made their way to a temple, where inside was a young Shi'ar girl.
"I am glad you're back." Jandra said before noticing Danny. "Who's this?"
"An ally, here to help us." Ch'od said.
Now, with nobody watching, the navigator turned off the force field as she went up to Scott.
"Is it true you are Corsair's son?" She asked.
Scott shook his head. "Not by choice!"
"Watch and learn." The navigator showed Scott the ship's log. "What you are going to see is the ship's log for three days in the future."
Cyclops was doubtful. "But that's impossible!"
The screen then showed a video of a crew transporting Jandra as the ship crashed.
A voice was narrating the events. "One thousand eight hundred twenty-one hours. Encountered magnetic storm of force of ten intensity. Life support temporarily failed. Six crew injured."
It showed Jandra's dead body on a stretcher.
"The witness, Jandra, lost." The narrator finished.
Scott realized what the navigator meant about this footage being from the future. "This faked sequence was programmed in advance to cover up what was really going to be a murder!"
"Exactly." The navigator said. "I went to your father for help because he was the one man I knew with the guts to rescue Jandra and see that justice was done."
"Until I ruined it." Scott said, ashamed of what he'd done. "My mistake could cost all of you your lives."
"We'll see." The navigator replied. "For now, just try to have a little faith in your father."
Raknar was interrogating Corsair when he heard the doors open. "I gave orders that I wasn't to be..."
"Disturbed?" Scott finished as he ran in with the navigator.
Scott opened fire on the robots with his optic blast, while the navigator pulled out a gun.
Raknar was then knocked unconscious by one of the blasts.
"That's the Scott Summers I gave my last parachute to!" Corsair praised as he was let out of his restraints. "Took you long enough!"
"Plan the family picnic later." The navigator said as more robots entered the room. "Let's go!"
The three then got onto hovercrafts and left the ship.
"Follow me!" Corsair urged as they flew through the jungle with Raknar's ship chasing them.
"Corsair, sorry to break communications silence, but I strongly suggest you alter your course thirteen degrees to the north." Ch'od advised over his communicator.
Raknar and his crew were listening in on this conversation.
"Fools!" Raknar cried. "We have them now."
The navigator's and Scott's hovercrafts were shot down, prompting them both to jump into Corsair's.
They were then shot down as Corsair started to run.
"Fire!" Raknar ordered as the ship fired on Corsair, only for Danny to appear and bring up a ghost shield that reflected the blast back at the ship, making it crash as the crew fled. Only to be knocked unconscious by Danny's ecto-blasts.
Ch'od then went up to Scott and Corsair and brought them both into a hug.
"You'll have to forgive Ch'od." Corsair excused. "He gets carried away."
Scott smiled. "That's okay, Dad. I think I understand how he's feeling."
"Get up here, everyone!" Ch'od said as the Starjammers got on the newly repaired Starjammer that was stationed on the institute's lawn. "We have a trial to get to!"
"And a renegade cop to turn over to Shi'ar justice." The navigator added.
"What made you change your mind?" Corsair asked Scott.
"Let's just say I like long odds." Scott replied. "Seems to run in the family." He then spoke in a more serious tone. "Our talk got interrupted. There's so much I want to know."
"We'll get to it." Corsair promised. "All of it. I've got a question or two myself."
"Then stay!" Cyclops offered.
"What?" Corsair replied.
"I don't mean forever." Scott clarified. "Just a few hours. You're not telling me your hot spacecraft can't make up a few hours flying across a whole galaxy!"
Corsair smiled. "Well I..." He paused a bit before continuing. "I guess we could spend a little extra time in hyperdrive."
"Oh, no." Ch'od said in a mock disappointed voice. "Break out the cards!"
"Better save your fuel." The navigator said. "Looks like we're going to be here for a while."
"So you're gonna marry that redhead lady?" Corsair said as he and Scott walked to the institute.
"Yeah." Scott said proudly.
"Reminds me a lot of your mother." Corsair added.
Cyclops was curious. "How?"
Corsair chuckled. "Maybe I should wait to tell you until after you're married."
Danny smiled and watched. "Man, Scott, your family is complicated. What's next? You find out that you have another brother?"
