Chapter 1: Left Behind
Waking up in a holding cell surrounded by scientists on the other side of the glass was not the greatest wake up call Rogue has ever gotten. Some other scientists were working on getting Blob out, sedating him once he was halfway out so they could get him into his own holding cell.
Rogue felt like time went by fast as she spent her time in the unfamiliar area. One by one she watched her friends and brotherhood member being taken out and brought back hours later all beaten up. It was her turn to be brought out, the blinding lights making her eyes shut as she was dragged out of her holding cell. Her knees hit hard flooring as she was tossed into a room, the dim lights making it easier to see.
Looking around at her surroundings, Rogue tries to look for an exit, then a hanger door starts to slowly open. Going towards it, her heart fluttered with hope, but it soon sank as a sentinel stomps out into the open room. Her body froze in place, eyes wide with fear. Rogue forces herself to run, but the sentinel had her locked on its target. "Mutant identified." The sentinel says as it walked towards her and raised an arm.
Rogue dodges out of the way as the robot fired missiles, yelping as she landed on her right ankle wrong after dodging another missile. The sentinel starts to fire other weapons, Trask watching from a room above. "Why isn't she using her powers?!" He growls.
"Well, sir, from what our data can tell us, she only has absorbing abilities so if she has no other mutant to absorb she is rendered useless." A scientist pipes up.
"Absorbing abilities? That could be useful for a future sentinel project…" Trask rubs his chin.
They let the struggle continue for longer than it should have gone- twenty minutes total, until Rogue collapses and the Sentinel grabs her body. She was bruised up from being flung or dodging obstacles. Trask powers down the robot, having his men go in and retrieve her. She gets taken to room where medical equipment was laid out, several doctors assessing her condition. Trask walks in, hands behind his back. "How damaged is she?" He eyes her.
"She has sustained a broken leg, multiple bruises including bruised ribs and arm. I suggest keeping this one in a holding cell away from others to recover." One doctor says. "Any longer and your robot could've killed her."
"Very well. The metal clawed mutant is being moved out tonight to a different facility. The other three show promising results in their skills but this one is useless to me unless she absorbs other powers. I want her powers to be part of the next sentinel, if you could get a blood sample today." Trask says as he starts to exit the room.
"Uh, yes sir." The doctor nods, then they get a vial ready.
Rogue gasps awake later in a new holding cell, wincing and crying out as she sits up. She looks down to see a cast on her right leg and multiple bruises on her body. Her hand goes to her head, looking around. She gets up, but falls to the floor as she didn't have crutches. Suddenly, she hears the alarms going off in the base, but she couldn't hear any movement in her area.
It took an hour for the alarm to be disarmed, Rogue sitting on the floor in a corner with her arms around her knees. A door opens, footsteps walking towards her holding cell and Trask appearing in front of it seconds later. "Your friends were just rescued, but they left you behind. I guess your not seen as a valued member on your team after all. They won't get far as I have sent a Sentinel out after them."
Rogue's eyes widen, then she looks down in shock as Trask leaves the room, the door shutting behind him, leaving her alone yet again. "No… they couldn't have…." Rogue's voice shakes.
"Rogue is back there somewhere!" Logan yells in Scott's face. "We need to go back!"
"We can't. As soon as we left, the x-jet alerted us that a Sentinel was sent out to find us. We need to lay low for now." Scott glares at Logan.
Logan growls. "Fine, if you won't go then I will."
He starts to leave but stops when a woman with a walking stick appears. "Is Rogue with you?" She asks.
"Why do you want to know, lady?" Logan growls.
"Because I need to know. Is she with you?"
"No."
"I knew this was a possibility… Please, you have to trust me, I mean no harm. My name is Irene, I took care of Rogue as she grew up." Irene looks at the X-men group.
"What brings you here if you knew Rogue wasn't?" Logan asks with his arms folded.
"Her future, I saw it. You left her behind, now her future will be changed. She is in danger if she stays there but she will be in even graver danger with you."
"Are you suggesting we killed Rogue by leaving her there?" Scott asks.
"It's another possible future. Lately I have been getting multiple futures of Rogue, some good, others not so good. I fear if she isn't rescued, she will become their guinea pig. But another vision told me she will be rescued and safe. You must keep her away from Bayville. Trask will want her but in time if she stays with you, she will wake up the most powerful mutant in the whole world." Irene explains.
"So how do we get her out?" Jean asks.
"I am afraid you won't like this but you must ask Magneto for help. I know what he has done isn't ideal to get you to work alongside him, but if you don't ask for his help then Rogue's life will be but a memory. Please, you must trust-"
Irene didn't have time to finish as a Sentinel was inbound in their direction. Logan grabs her and tells the others to run. For now they had to find someplace safe before they can devise a plan to rescue their teammate.
Rogue was moved to another holding facility yet again in an unknown location, but luckily they gave her a few accommodations to her holding cell as her broken leg was still healing. But that didn't stop Trask's team from pushing her to her limits-mostly mentally for the time being. Rogue shakes as she sits in her cell, curled up in a ball. She couldn't believe the X-men would leave her behind. She thought they were her family. People she could trust. But in the end she gets left behind and tossed aside, used by them like others have.
She didn't have a real sense of time in her prison, but months had gone by and her leg was partially healed up. That was when Trask decided to put her back in for Sentinel testing, but proved to be a bad idea when she broke her leg yet again and left arm. Rogue screams out in pain as the Sentinel held her in its grasp tight. And yet again she was put in a cast and onto medical leave from Sentinel testing. That didn't stop Trask from continuing to break her spirit though.
Rogue would wake up every night to nightmares plaguing her mind, her tears running down her face as she tried effortlessly to calm down. She just wished when it would all end. She can't even trust anyone anymore.
Trask tries to put her through several different tests, but gets frustrated after she collapses unconscious from exhaustion. "What is wrong with this mutant?!" Trask yells.
"She has been pushed through so much, sir. Perhaps we should just let the mutant rest until her arm and leg are fully healed?" A scientist answers timidly.
Trask growls. "Fine. But after her breaks have healed completely, I want to put her through Sentinel testing again."
Rogue gasps awake as she bolts sitting upward in her cot. Wincing, she rubs her cast on her arm, then lets out a sigh and lays back down. She covers her face with her good hand while letting out a small sob. The alarm suddenly goes off-Rogue yelping in surprise-indicating a break in or emergency.
She hears explosions ringing throughout the building, covering her ears and shutting her eyes. Her body shakes as she curls into a corner, hoping the explosions would stop soon. The door to the observing room of her cell explodes open, Rogue screaming. The click of her cell door alerts her as she sees a tall figure standing in the doorway. "Get away!" She yells.
"Whoa, easy dere. 'M gettin' y' outta heah." Says the figure.
Rogue looks up in shock as the figure slowly and cautiously approaches her. Her terrified emerald eyes meet calm red on black ones. Knowing she has seen them before, she tries backing up more into her corner. "De longah we stay heah, we'll both be trapped." He says.
"A-ah… how do ah know ah can.. trust ya?" Rogue's quivering voice asks. "You tried blowin' mah hand off!"
The Cajun winces. "In my defense, I was jus' doin' what I was told t'. Now dere ain' no sides. Dere are Sentinels running 'round tryin' t' get mutants. Trust me, y'll be safer wit' me than y' are heah."
Rogue shakes her head, hearing a sigh escape his lips. "Rogue, is it? I'm Gambit, but y' can call me, Remy. I promise 'm not gon' give y' a charged card o' do y' any harm, okay?" Remy knelt down in front of her and gazed into her eyes.
Rogue looks down to see his hand outstretched for her to take. She slowly and hesitantly takes it, Remy giving her a soft smile, like he did when she ran into him months prior. Remy stands up, helping her slowly up off her cot, then he noticed the casts on her. "Can y' walk?" He asks.
"N-no… they broke mah leg… twahce.. ah can't run." Rogue stutters.
Remy thinks, then turns his head when he hears shouts. Moving swiftly, he picks up Rogue and carries her out, running out into the halls and in the opposite direction from the shouting voices. Rogue felt her breathing hitch and her chest tighten as she takes in her surroundings as Remy ran.
Remy rounds a corner into a large opening in the building, halting in his steps as a Sentinel turns and makes it way towards them. Rogue grips Remy's coat as her eyes widen in fear. Remy turns back, running for the entrance he had come through earlier. The Sentinel fires green goop to immobilize them, but Remy was quick and agile. Hearing shouts again, he turns into a smaller hallway, then finds an air vent they could crawl through. "Y' gon' have t' crawl, chère." He says.
"What?!" Rogue looks up at him after he sets her down.
"Don' worry, 'll be behind y'. Now go!" Remy takes out several cards, charging them and throwing them down the hall.
Rogue scrambles in the vent the best she could, then Remy follows and closes it behind him. The two sit in the large air vent, hearing loud footsteps and mechanical ones come down the hall. Remy listens, then places a hand over Rogue's mouth, her breathing panicked. Once the footsteps are out of range, he lets go and sighs in relief, then looks at Rogue and noticed her shaking. This wasn't the same Rogue he ran into months ago, this one seemed broken by Trask doing whatever he did to break her. "Rogue? Y' okay?" He asks, his voice hushed.
Rogue was staring down at the metal flooring, trying to relax her breathing and calm her shaking. She jumps when she felt Remy's hand gently touch her, her eyes shooting up to meet his. "What happened? What'd dey do t' y'?" Remy asks, genuine concern in his voice.
"T-torture…" Rogue shakily responds.
Remy frowns, then looks down the air vent hall. "Let's get movin' so we can get y' outta heah."
Rogue nods, following Remy. He opens the others side of the vent, the fresh air from outside hitting them. Rogue breathes it in in a shaky breath. Her heart flutters with hope for a moment. Remy holds his hand out for her and helps her to her feet. She didn't know where they were, but she was relieved to be out of the prison she was kept in.
