Chapter 5: So Close

Rogue sits in a room as a doctor checked her leg and arm. They had done x-rays and said her breaks have healed but to take things slow and easy. Rogue nods and shakily walks out of the room after her casts were removed. Remy was waiting in the waiting room of the ER, then looks up when he sees her coming out. "Take it y' all healed up?" He smiles.

"Yeah but ah gotta take it easy and work on some physical therapy." Rogue nods.

Remy holds his hand out for her, to which she takes it. They were in Lafayette, Louisiana, having stopped there to have Rogue's injuries looked at. Remy was also helping her control her powers during their time between Houston and Lafayette, Rogue having made some progress as they practiced. The two walk out of the ER, getting in the car and driving off to some tourist destinations to look around.

Rogue sits on a bench to rest for a moment and give her leg a break after they go to a park near their motel. "Finally, ah don't hafta use those damn crutches anymo'." She lets out a sigh as she leans back on the bench.

"Well, now y' got t' work on physical therapy fo' y' arm and leg but dat won' be hard t' do. An' now y' can also practice controllin' y' powers more wit' both hands." Remy sits next to her and leans back with her.

The two southerners sit for a couple minutes, enjoying the warm, clouded day. Remy was letting Rogue come to him when she felt comfortable to initiate small intimate touches, such as holding hands. He didn't want to make her feel pressured and had let her do everything at her own pace. Rogue slowly inches her hand to his that was on the bench, her gloved fingers lightly brushing onto his as she went to grab for his hand. Rogue has only ever had one crush but felt like it wasn't like how she was feeling now. With Remy it was different and she felt she can be herself when with him and he always made her heart race or her cheeks blush which thinking back in her memories has never happened in the past.

Remy gives her hand a light squeeze, knowing how she was feeling with his empathic abilities he had. The two were alerted when the clouds got darker and rain start to come down in small drops, turning into a downpour in seconds. Everyone was heading inside or to their cars, so Remy held her hand tighter and they ran through the rain, Rogue doing a bit of a half jog so she takes it easy on her healing leg. Their motel was close as they had gone to a small park nearby to get some fresh air. Once under the canopy of the motel, the two exchange looks then laugh, their clothes soaked and hair wet. Their laughter gets cut off by a boom of thunder, the winds slightly picking up as it stormed on. "I think we should get inside." Rogue shouts over the downpour and thunder.

"What, don' wanna go dancin' in de rain?" Remy jokes.

"Not in this rain." Rogue laughs.

Remy takes her inside, going to their room so they could get changed, shutting the door behind her. Rogue rubs her arms as her drenched clothing made her a bit cold, plus the air conditioning was on, but she turns it off so that the room could warm up a bit. Remy peers outside the window, noticing how much was coming down and how much the winds had picked up. "Man it's realleh comin' down…" Rogue comments as she stands next to Remy.

"Guess we're staying in fo' de rest of our evenin'." Remy shuts the blinds then turns on the two lamps that were on both sides of the bed.

"Hopefully it calms down latah." Rogue crosses her arms.

Storms had always made her worry a bit, evening growing up. Sure she liked it when it rained but being in a storm like this was far from the light rainstorms she was used to. She watched from the window, then decided she was going to change into her pjs to get out of her damp clothing. Remy quickly changes into his while Rogue was in the bathroom, laying on the bed and trying to act normal. Rogue walks out with a towel in her hands to pat her hair dry. She pauses when she noticed Remy was trying to get comfortable. She stifles a chuckle. "What are ya doin'?"

Remy looks up, giving a sheepish smile. "Heh, tryin' t' get comfortable."

Rogue chuckles lightly, rolling her eyes as she walks over to the bed. She sighs as she flops down on her back, the towel landing on the floor. Her hair had partially dried and it started to curl in places. Remy smiles and plays with a strand. "Didn' know y' hair curled."

"Hm? Oh, yeah ah just been straightening it fer yeahs, ah guess since middle school and since ah cut mah hair."

"Y' should jus' let it be natural instead of straightenin' it. I like it."

Rogue turns her head and looks at him, her eyes locking onto his. Remy had a soft smile on his lips, his eyes showing affection as he looked at her. Rogue could feel her heartbeat start to beat faster as she got lost into his eyes. She inches a bit towards him, him doing the same, but pausing to make sure she wanted to go forward. Rogue had made progress in controlling her powers, lasting a whole 5 minutes before her powers kicked in. She inches closer, inciting Remy he could do the same. Slowly, she brought her hand up to his face, her lips hovering over his, then gently places a kiss. Remy's hands go to her waist, kissing her back gently, letting her initiate if she wanted more. He didn't want to overwhelm her if he had done it, but told her it was okay to take things at her own pace.

Rogue kisses him deeply, lightly tugging him towards her, feeling one of his hands go on the bed as his body moved to slightly hover over hers. She pulls away to catch her breath, noticing the look in Remy's eyes as he stared down at her. He could tell how she was feeling, her hands tugging him back down to her while he crashed his lips into hers to kiss her deeply and passionately. Rogue's hands go into his hair as his hands went to her waist, his body completely hovering over her smaller one.

She didn't want to stop kissing him, it felt good to feel normal. Remy let her tug on him, knowing how long she can last without her powers activating, after-all he was training her. Her hands tugged on his shirt, bringing him closer and receiving a small grunt from him. Rogue pulls back, not wanting to risk hurting him, both of them out of breath. "Wow…" Rogue's voice was very soft as they stared at each other, her cheeks flushed.

Remy gives her a grin, trying to catch his breath. "'Ll let y' do dat anytime."

"Fer a minute, ah felt normal. And if ah'm bein' honest, that was mah first kiss…" Rogue blushes and smiles lightly.

"Well, maybe 'll be y' first an' last?" Remy tilts his head with a grin.

Rogue chuckles. "Ah realleh lahked it though."

"If y' want more, all y' gotta do is ask." Remy gets close to her again.

"Ah'm worried ah'm gonna hurt ya." Rogue says softly, her gloved right hand going to his face.

"Y' trust me?" He lowers his voice down, almost husky.

Rogue felt her heart race and a shiver run down her spine. "Ah do."

Remy lowers his head down, pausing and waits for her permission. Rogue gives him a small nod and he kisses her again, feeling one of her legs hike up on him. His hand keeps her leg there as he deepens the kiss, Rogue opening her mouth for him, feeling his body press against hers which causes a soft sound escape her lips. She pulls back for air, both panting. "We should stop…" Rogue says softly.

"Only if y' want t'." Remy's own voice just as soft.

"Ah just wanna be careful."

"Dat's okay." Remy gives her a reassuring smile.

He places a light kiss on her forehead, then he rolls over with her and lays back against the bed. Rogue lets out a squeak, clinging to him. Remy lets out a laugh then pulls the sheets over them, his arms wrapping around her body. Rogue lets out a content sigh, then a yawn. The clock on the wall told them it was now eleven at night, both noticing the storm was still roaring outside. "Ah hope that storm stops soon. Ah don't think ah'd sleep well if it continued." Rogue yawns.

"'M sure it'll stop." Remy says as he nuzzles her, his body relaxed into the bed.

He was gonna ask her something but looked down to notice she had fallen asleep on him, making him smile. "G'night chère." He whispers then he reached over gently and turned off the lamps and fell asleep.

Her night was filled night terrors, but Remy held her tight against him and murmured in his sleep, his face nuzzling into hers and his lips placing a soft kiss on her cheek. Rogue settled down and was able to get back into a calm and peaceful rest for the rest of the night. Her nightmares would now only occur every other night or every two nights, all depending, and every time Remy would be there to help get her into a peaceful rest so she wasn't losing anymore sleep like she was previous.

Morning comes, the storm had died down during the night, only a light sprinkle coming down outside. They decided to go exploring and do some shopping as Rogue wanted to find a few other clothing items for herself. They exit the store, Rogue content with finding a cropped brown jacket for herself, which she rolled up the sleeves a bit since it was quite warm with the drizzle, and a few other things she had bought-technically Remy bought since she did not have her wallet.

Remy smiles at her contentment, her thanking him with a gracious smile. They walk around after leaving the bags in the hotel room, Rogue enjoying the southern air. The two pause when they hear rumbling and people panicking and running away, both southerners looking at each other wondering what was going on. A loud mechanical sound alerted them both, a sentinel moving a tree to scan the area. Rogue froze up in petrified fear, her heart racing, eyes widen and her body shaking. She couldn't hear anything as she stood frozen in place as the Sentinel yards away started walking towards them. Remy was shouting her name, then he rushes up to her and looks her in the eyes, noticing her terrified state. "Rogue!" He shouts. "We got t' go!"

Rogue gasps and snaps out of, Remy taking her hand and running. The Sentinel scans the area, its eyes targeting Remy and Rogue as they ran. "Mutant life, must be detained." The robot heads right for them.

Remy throws some charged cards back behind him at the Sentinel, hearing Rogue's breathing ragged. He knew he had to get them out of there, he wasn't going to let the Sentinel take Rogue. Suddenly, he jolts back as Rogue's legs gave out beneath her, her eyes distant as she stared at the ground while her shaking hands rested on the pavement. "Rogue! Chère, we got t' get movin'. We can make it back t' de hotel. We're gon' get out o' here." Remy cups her cheeks as he knelt down in front of her, his eyes showing concern.

"A-ah… ah can't move…" She whispers.

Remy throws more charged cards at the Sentinel, watching it stumble backwards a bit. He rushes forward and grabs some rocks, charging them up and throwing them at the giant robots vital parts. The Sentinel stumbles back more but manages to lift up its arm and fire a familiar green goop, aimed at Rogue. Remy's eyes widen, a gasp escaping him as he rushed forward and covers Rogue. The green sludge immobilizes them both, Remy's arms around Rogue who was shielding herself. The Sentinel had powered down right after firing, its circuits fried from the cards and rocks Remy had thrown.

"Mutants obtained. Bringing them back to the base." A armored man says as a group of them surround the area.

It took Remy a moment to recognize where he was, his eyes blinking open in confusion, then he sits up in panic. "Rogue?!" His head looks around at his surroundings.

She was no where to be found. He noticed he was in a small holding cell, a power dampening collar around his neck. Remy tries to pry it off but it was of no use. Cursing under his breath, he looks at the bars on his cell, noticing a lock. Grinning to himself, he pulls out a pin from his trench coat pocket, always keeping one on hand in situations like these. With a click, his door opens and he steps out cautiously, his red on black eyes scanning his surroundings and noticing no guards.

Remy quietly and stealthily prowls in the building, peering out a window and noticing they were still in Louisiana. A sigh of relief escapes him, then his blood ran cold as he thought about Rogue. He picks up his pace and comes across a room, putting his ear up to the door as he heard voices on the other side. "We have obtained two mutants sir. We have recaptured the one that escaped your base in California. What would you like us to do with her?" The man asks.

"Good, I want a doctor to see if her breaks have healed then I want her transported back to the base. I am dealing with my own shit right now in Bayville, but once she's back in my facility, I want to run her through the Sentinel testing again." Trask's voice answers back.

Remy clenches his fist, his eyes widen in anger.

"Understood. What about the other mutant we picked up?"

"I could make use of him. Send him too."

"Yes sir."

The call ends, Remy stepping away from the door, his hands feeling the power dampening collar on him for a way to pry it off. He finds a latch and decided to try that, the collar coming off with a click. Remy looks down at it, then used his powers and blows it up. He runs down the hall, finding another holding room, this time he found Rogue passed out on a cot in her own cell. Using the pin, he unlocks the door and rushes in, noticing a power dampening collar on her, too. "Rogue? Rogue," He says softly, his hands gently shaking her.

Rogue gasps and sits up, but relaxes when she notices Remy's own relaxed face looking at her. She throws her arms around him, him doing the same. He kisses her deeply, then buries his face in her hair as he held her. "Y' okay?" He asks.

"Yeah." Rogue nods shakily.

"Den let's get outta heah." Remy grabs her hand.

The two cautiously sneak around the base, hiding when they hear voices or footsteps. Rogue touches the collar on her neck, seeing how it turned off her powers. She starts to move when Remy guides her around again, finally sneaking out of the building. Remy tosses some cards to create a distraction, then leads her to a parked car. The alarms had went off just he got the car started and puts it in drive. Rogue lets out a sigh of relief as she leans back against her seat. "Glad we didn't get caught."

"When y' wit' me, 'll make sure y' never do." Remy grins. "After all, had t' make sure m' girlfriend was safe an' sound as y' were my number one priority."

Remy pauses after he said that, glancing to Rogue who was blushing but had a small smile on her lips. "So ah'm officially ya girlfriend?"

Remy clears his throat, feeling a bit flustered. "Well, s'long as y' want dis t'ief t' be y' boyfriend."

"Ah thought ya already were when we kissed." Rogue teases.

Remy grins. "Jus' makin' sure we're on de same page, chère."

Rogue smiles, feeling her heart fluttering, then she glances to Remy. "We leavin' Lafayette?"

Remy nods. "Gon' get our stuff den leave. Gotta keep as much distance between us and dose damn Sentinels."

Rogue nods, then her fingers touch the collar. "What about this collah?"

Remy glanced at her. "I can take it off y' when we're safe. Took me a minute t' get mine off."

They leave the car a block away from their motel, walking back the rest of the way, then grab their stuff quickly and pack up the car. Rogue sits in her passenger seat as they drove, her arms around herself. She was quiet, which Remy can tell she was not doing well. "What's wrong?" He asks as he drives.

"Ah just froze up…." Rogue says softly, her eyes looking out the window as her face showed a pained expression. "Ah couldn't do anythin' and ah made us get captured. Ah usually never freeze up in situations lahke that."

Remy gives her a sympathetic look. "'S okay, Rogue. We gotta outta dere. 'Sides, I wouldn' let dem take y' so easily. I damaged dere Sentinel right befo' we got captured."

"Ah know but… ah wish ah could've fought back or run or.. somethin'. Sometahmes ah feel so useless since mah powers rely on absorbin' othahs powahs."

Remy pulls the car over and puts it in park, surprising Rogue. He grabs her and looks her in her eyes, a serious look on his face that made a shiver run down Rogue's back. "Y' not useless. T' be honest, y' stronger dan y' t'ink y' are an' y' don' always need y' powers. Y' can still kick ass wit'out dem. 'Ve seen y' fight, Rogue, y' amazin'."

Rogue felt her breath hitch, her eyes wide. She was speechless. Satisfied with his response, Remy gives her a smile, placing a kiss on her lightly. "Trust me."

Rogue nods, her cheeks tinted pink. "Always."

Remy starts driving again, it wasn't long until they drove through Morgan city and headed right for New Orleans. His hands gripped the steering wheel a bit tighter, wanting to pass through his hometown without stopping, but the car needed gas, which was just their luck. They stop at a gas station, Remy telling Rogue to buy some snacks, to which she happily went inside to go pick out what she wanted. Remy fills the tank, his eyes scanning his surroundings. He knows they weren't in guild territory yet, but that didn't mean one of them could still be around outside of it. He just had to make sure to stay far from both territories and to keep on driving until they were out of New Orleans.

Rogue comes out with a few things in her hands, trying to fix her hold so nothing falls out of her grasp. Three men walk past her, one bumping into her, causing her to almost drop her drink. "Hey! Watch it!" She makes a face.

"Whaddya say?" One man turns and gives her a look.

"Ah said watch where ya goin'." Rogue bites back.

The leader of the trio steps between the other two men, a scowl on his face. "Y' don' want ta mess wit' us, girl."

"Ya don't want ta mess with meh either." Rogue scowls back.

The three men laugh, one taking out a knife from his pocket, Rogue feeling her stomach drop when she realized she was still wearing the power dampening collar. 'Crap' She mentally says.

She pauses and felt relieved when she felt Remy's presence behind her, but could feel he had a bit of dark energy around him. Remy on the other hand was glaring at the trio, his hand going to her waist. "Dere a problem?" He asks, his voice cold.

"Y' girl got a mouth an' temper. Best she keep it t' herself." The leader growls.

"Den maybe y' should watch where y' goin'." Remy growls back, then he guides Rogue back to the car.

The leader looks to his two friends with him, one asking if he recognized Remy. "Hey, Julian, dat guy looked like Jean Luc's adopted demon."

"Yeah, I reckon that was. Looks like Remy Lebeau is back in town." Julian watches as the car drives off.

Rogue glances to Remy, chewing on her snack she had bought. She swallows and showed a bit of concern as she noticed the look in his eyes. "Are ya okay?" She asks.

Remy relaxed his posture a bit so he wasn't as tense, letting out a sigh. "We gotta be more careful around dis area. Probably won' be makin' anymore stops, but even if we aren't in guild territory yet it can still be dangerous."

Rogue blinks, then glances down. "Oh. We're those guys… from a guild?"

She can tell he was hesitant to tell her, but she waited. "De Assassin's Guild. Don' wanna go messin' 'round wit' dem. Dat was Julian with his two friends. 'M sure he recognized me but not till we left. If he had recognized me sooner we would have been in more trouble. 'S why 's best we drive out o' N'aw 'Leans befo' dey catch up t' us." Remy explains.

Rogue nods. Remy keeps on driving, having to go into the city to get out of it. He didn't like the idea of taking Rogue to New Orleans so soon, especially since he never told his father why he left, heck he doesn't even know he has sided with Magneto and Remy knows he can't get out of Magneto's team so easily. They were under contract, made up from blackmail. He tries to leave, Magneto will tell the Thieves AND the Assassin's Guild. It's bad enough that Rogue had a run in with Julian. Julian is relentless and with the power dampening collar still around Rogue's neck, her fighting skills wouldn't be a match for his expert assassin's skills-spending his whole life training under his father, the leader of the Assassin's Guild.

Remy stops the car when his eyes caught something in the road above. He knows his way in and out of the city like the back of his hand. Rogue looks at him and noticed his facial expression. "What's wrong?" She asks.

"Stay heah." He instructs.

"Lemme come with ya!" Rogue protests.

Remy turns to look at her. "I know y' jus' want t' help, but I know dis city like de back of my hand. 'D be best if y' stayed in de car. Don' know what we're dealin' wit'."

Rogue slumps back against her seat, watching him exit the car. He cautiously walks out, card ready incase of anything. As he gets closer, a foot kicks him in the side, sending him flying sideways to the ground. Remy grits his teeth, looking up and leaning on his elbow. Julian grins down at him. "Thought dat was y', Lebeau. Didn' know y' were back in town. Where y' been?"

"Jus' passin' through." Remy glares at Julian, then throws a card.

Julian gets taken aback by the card, groaning as he sits up from the ground. He glares back at Remy, noticing he was back up on his feet. "Y' t'ink I didn' bring company?" Julian laughs with a wicked grin.

The area was surrounded, Remy's hands holding more cards, but freezes when he hears Rogue's voice. "Don't touch meh!" She yells as she punches one guy.

He was distracted long enough to give Julian time to land a right hook on him, knocking him down onto his stomach. Remy grunts, then felt a couple of Julian's friends pin him down. His red on black eyes glare up at Julian. "Don' touch 'er." Remy growls.

Rogue kicks another guy, getting him in the groin, but one hits her from behind, causing her to yell out and fall to the ground. Rogue takes off her glove but freezes when she yet again realizes her powers were nullified. Another man grabs her arms and shove them behind her back as they shove her to the ground, Rogue crying out in pain as she hits the pavement face first. They pull her up so that she is on her knees and tie her hands behind her back, then the one she kicked in the groin holds a knife to her throat with one hand and her hair in another. Remy's eyes went wide as they looked at each other. "Let her go!" Remy yells to Julian.

Julian bends down and smirks. "Y' know what, I don' think so. She's involved now. 'D like t' see y' get yer way outta dis one. Be entertainin' t' watch what y' do when I start teachin' her to keep her mouth shut."

Remy growls, trying to get free, but grunts when one guy jams his boot in his back. Julian turns slowly and starts walking towards Rogue, Rogue trying now to make any sudden movements knowing the knife could slice her throat. Her eyes go to Remy, worry in them as his pleading eyes look back. Julian stops in front of Rogue, an evil grin on his lips. "Now den, what t' do wit' y'."

A/N: welll shit. Till next time though!
