Author's Note: Hello again, welcome back everyone! So uh...this chapter got really out of hand LOL! It's 17K words raw...I had a lot to explore here. I could've cut the intro scene but I didn't really want to - we haven't had some good Zel and Link alone time since Chapter 1 really so it felt nice to keep it in, even if the word count kept rising as a result.

On that note, if you've read the original Chapter 4 before, the first scene is mostly identical, save a few word changes. You'll also recognize a few smaller points of conversation throughout the chapter, but the vast majority of it is brand new stuff involving the star of the show (whom I won't spoil in case you haven't read this before). From here, the story will continue on as originally intended and every chapter will be new for everyone again!

Thanks for coming along for the rewrite and I'll see you again at the end of the chapter! For now though, I hope you enjoy!

"I feel like I've become a crybaby lately," Zelda huffed, her messy hair flopping listlessly across her face.

"Why do you think that?" Link's gentle voice washed over her. It never took any effort for him to draw her attention. Even if the room weren't completely silent, she'd have heard him as clear as day for how easily her ears always keyed into his words.

She and Link had returned from Gerudo Desert with her other self about an hour ago. It had been hard to say goodbye to Urbosa, but she had promised Zelda she would be there to see her off before they returned home. For now, that was enough.

They had taken turns bathing, Link insisting she go first again so she would be comfortable and relaxed sooner. He was always looking out for her, whether it was in big ways or small ones. And after she returned to the room, she had done a lot of thinking about her father while Link had been in the bath himself.

Urbosa had given her a lot to consider. She didn't have to forgive him just because he was trying to be a better man? It was entirely her decision, whatever that may be? It was the first time she'd ever really been told things like that with regards to him. What did she really feel towards her father?

The most she was able to come up with so far was that she was still very hurt and very angry with him for her childhood and teenage years. Even now, she wasn't sure if she actually wanted to talk to him about her feelings or not. She would probably give in and speak with him before she and Link returned home; this was an opportunity that would be next to impossible to come across again. But she didn't want to do it until she had figured out exactly what she hoped to gain from the interaction. Did she want him to accept her? Did she want him to apologize to her? Or did she just want to unleash all her pent-up anger on him? She wasn't even close to sure yet.

Zelda sighed as Link sat down beside her on the bed, bringing her back to reality. The disparity between them would have been enough to make her laugh if she weren't so lost in her own head. While his slightly damp hair was neatly brushed back out of his face, her own created a curtain across her eyes. He sat upright next to her, his hand now holding hers, while she was splayed out on her back, one arm tossed carelessly above her head while she stared through strands of golden hair towards the stone ceiling. His sonorous voice broke through her thoughts, as steady and supportive as ever.

"You're not a crybaby, Zel." She blew some air up at her face in a halfhearted attempt to clear her vision. It caused her hair to flutter lightly, but it was stubborn and refused to move. She couldn't even be frustrated with it – she was being the same way.

"I used to be so much more put together, though. Until recently, you were really the only person who'd ever seen me cry. But now I've gone to pieces in front of the Sages and Purah when Mineru-sama left us, Impa and Paya when we discussed what happened when I fell through time, and now Urbosa all day today. I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing to be more open about my feelings but…it just seems like I'm less in control of my emotions lately, I suppose."

The hair obscuring Zelda's vision disappeared in an instant as Link brushed it from her face, his azure eyes gazing at her, gentle and inviting. He tucked a few loose strands behind her ear as he loved to do before letting his hand trail down and rest against her cheek. The delicacy of the motion made her shiver.

"There's nothing wrong with crying sometimes, my love. I've done it too. I don't think you're losing control of anything; you've gone through a lot the last few months. I think anyone would be a bit overwhelmed if they'd survived the things you have."

"You're so sweet to me, Link. I just don't know what I'd do without you." Link leaned in and placed a soft kiss on her forehead.

"You'll never have to find out."

"How is it that you always know how to make me feel better? I'll try not to beat myself up too much."

"If that was you beating yourself up, I'd hate to see what you'd do if you were really angry." She giggled at last, bringing her forgotten arm back to her side and placing her hand atop Link's. The gold bracelet Urbosa had given her pressed against each of their wrists as she aligned her fingers with his.

"Outside of this morning, I don't think I remember how to feel angry. I've just been so impossibly happy these last six months. It's all thanks to you."

"I feel exactly the same way, Zel. You mean everything to me and to be with you like this every day? I don't know if it's even possible to be happier than I am." Zelda gave him a playful grin.

"Hmm, I don't know…I'd take a bet that I'm the happiest person in the world when I'm with you." Link chuckled.

"You know, normally I'd let you win in a heartbeat, but I just can't admit defeat on this one."

"Then perhaps we can settle for calling it a tie? If there's anyone I'd love to share being the happiest person in the world with, it's you."

"Deal."

Link lowered himself onto his side, leaning in close and pressing his lips to hers. Zelda felt her heart skip a beat and she melted into his arms as they slowly tightened around her. It had been a long few days and they'd barely had any time to themselves. Kissing him, holding him, it all felt so refreshing…so mesmerizing. Sometimes, it even felt like she was addicted to him, but in a decidedly good way. It was almost an oxymoron when she really thought about it, but she'd long since given up trying to verbalize the depths of her feelings for Link beyond telling him how much she loved him. Somehow, he understood the true nature of her boundless adoration without her putting it to words.

Link slowly pulled away, each of them catching their breath. She could feel the heat in her cheeks still as she gazed into his beautiful eyes. How was he so perfect? Link was truly everything she could ever want and then some. Not just as a romantic partner either. He was her strongest supporter, her most trusted confidant, her dauntless protector, and her very best friend in the entire world.

"Link…do you believe in soulmates?" His eyes seemed to shimmer.

"Two people who are fated to be together? Of course I do." She smiled up at him.

"You never struck me as the sentimental type before we became romantically involved, you know."

"I blame my stoic, quiet hero act," he told her with an amused grin.

"It wasn't just an act, my love. You've always been dependable and strong."

"I'm just glad it was enough to keep you by my side."

"I'll never be anywhere but. I was just thinking, though, that you are most certainly my soulmate." Link leaned in and pressed his nose to hers.

"I believe with all my heart that you're my soulmate too. But I don't think fate or destiny had to push us together for that to be true."

"You don't?"

"I would've found you no matter what, no matter when or where. Even if it wasn't as a knight or your sworn protector, I know in my heart there was no world that I didn't find you and fall in love with you."

"Link…"

"I mean it. When I think about my life without you, it just feels so…empty. Like nothing matters if you're not by my side. I know what it feels like to me missing part of myself; when I woke up without my memories eight years ago, every moment felt that way. And I felt the same way when I lost you six months ago. You're not just my soulmate – you make my life worth living, Zel."

Zelda couldn't respond; her throat had tightened significantly as he spoke. Tears welled in her eyes yet again. She knew he hadn't meant to make her cry but she couldn't help it. The unparalleled, unbelievable happiness she felt just from looking at him was already intense enough but to hear him say things like that to her? She could never respond in any other way but to cry tears of incredible happiness.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to overwhelm you," he whispered to her, brushing her tears away with a feathered touch. She shook her head and felt a wide smile steal her lips.

"Don't be. The fact that I'm so happy I can cry tears of joy like this is something I'll never feel ashamed of. I don't even care if it does make me a crybaby. I feel the same way, Link, and I'm not just saying that to echo you."

"I'd never think you were."

"You're the missing piece of a puzzle I never knew I hadn't completed. If my life were truly separated into small parts that all fit together, you would be the center piece that held everything in place and gave it meaning. There's an enormous hole in my life and my heart when I'm not with you. I learned that the hard way when I was lost in the past.

"I swear on all that I am, on all that I love and believe in, that I will never allow us to be separated again. And should a time come where something or someone tries to tear us apart, I will fight that cruelest of fates with everything I have, even if my opponent is a goddess or a demon. Nothing will ever stand between us again, my love, not even the divine."

Link was watching her with adoration shimmering in his eyes. She thought maybe they'd even become a little glassy. He blinked a few times before his hand returned to her cheek and stroked her skin with an intoxicating gentleness.

"I know I've said it before, but I love it when you speak so poetically like that. I swear I'll never allow us to be separated again either."

"I know you won't. And with both of us working together, there's no chance we'll fail to keep our promise. We'll be together forever."

"Of course we will, my darling. Speaking of," Link began, smiling at her, "where would you like to go together tomorrow? Zelda said she'd be happy to take us anywhere."

"…it was strange to hear you call her 'Zelda.'" Link laughed lightly.

"I'm sorry; I figured it might be better than calling her 'the other you' the whole time we're here. But I won't do it if it makes you feel strange." Zelda shook her head and smiled.

"It's okay! I've called her that too. I just wasn't expecting it."

"Well no matter what timeline we're in, you're the only Zelda for me." She felt her face heat up again hearing her full name directed at her.

"I've been 'Zel' for so long now it actually catches me by surprise when you call me by name that way."

"Do you not like it?" She shook her head, her eyes sparkling.

"I love it. Any version of my name I get to hear in your voice will always make me happy. It does feel a little more…intimate to hear you call me 'Zelda' though. Perhaps that's why it always makes me blush so…"

"We can certainly arrange for a more intimate evening," Link whispered to her, his eyes shimmering as he met her gaze. Zelda felt her blush creep up her ears.

"L-Link! How scandalous of you; here, in the Castle?" Link's cheeks twitched as he tried not to grin. It didn't work.

"My love, I didn't say I'd arrange it tonight. It seems like you're the one who had something in mind."

If the heat in Zelda's face and ears had rivaled Gerudo Desert in temperature before, it now surpassed even that of Eldin Volcano. She raised her hands and covered her face, doing her best to sink into the bed beneath her and vanish from sight.

"I…rather, you…um…" Link gave a light laugh before leaning in and kissing her forehead.

"I'm sorry, Zel, I just couldn't resist. You okay?" Zelda took a few seconds to recover before finally peeking through her fingers and letting her eyes meet his again, her cheek puffing out.

"You've certainly gotten comfortable teasing me lately…" He leaned in again and gently nudged her hand aside, kissing her on the cheek this time.

"Only because I'm so relaxed with you compared to where we started." Zelda slowly sat up in bed, Link's curious eyes following her. She laughed just a bit before sighing, a grin on her lips.

"I can hardly be upset for that, can I? But you know…you're not the only one who knows how to get the response they want!"

Without warning, Zelda turned and grabbed Link's shoulders, pushing him down on the bed and throwing her leg across him. As she settled into his lap and gazed down at him, she delighted in the fiery blush that had exploded to life across his own cheeks and ears this time. She giggled before leaning down and kissing his nose.

"See? I know what being assertive like that does to you, my darling." Link was avoiding her eyes.

"Z-Zel…that wasn't…that…"

"Ooh, it's not often I get to be the one making you stammer! Perhaps I went a little too far though; I'm sorry, Link," she sang, her devious smile never fading. Link shook his head almost imperceptibly.

"N-no…don't be. I…don't mind."

"Well, perhaps for now I've proven my point." She moved towards her left, intent on lying down beside him and cuddling, but felt him catch her wrists gently. A bit surprised, she looked towards him and saw his bright, blue eyes locked onto her.

"Link? Are you okay?" Despite the heat that hadn't dissipated from his cheeks yet, a mischievous grin was what answered her as his grip vanished, quickly replaced by the strong embrace of his arms as he pulled her down atop him.

"Where do you think you're going, my love?" Zelda's own blush returned full force. For as much as she knew being assertive affected Link, it never failed to make her swoon when the shoe was on the other foot.

As their lips pressed together again, Zelda felt herself melt into his arms entirely, though perhaps the fire raging in her cheeks helped that along, too.

Zora's Domain was as pristine and welcoming as Link had ever seen it. He'd been here many times before and witnessed it under all manner of misfortune. Before the Calamity, a Lynel had appeared to terrorize the Zora as they ascended Ploymus Mountain. A century later, he had witnessed it all but drowning beneath Vah Ruta's relentless deluge. And most recently, a rain of sludge and slime had all but poisoned the beautiful home of the Zora before he and Sidon had rid the contamination from the Water Temple.

But today, there was no wayward Lynel, there was no rampaging Divine Beast, and there was certainly no Water Temple raining pollution from the skies. Zora's Doman seemed to sparkle as the sunlight glinted from its silver surfaces and the people themselves were filled with vigor and energy as they went about their daily tasks.

Zel had insisted they visit Mipha next, intent on giving Link a reunion with his childhood friend the way he'd done for her with Urbosa the day before. They had proposed it to the Zelda of this era and she had seen fit to leave the Sheikah Slate in their hands. Evidently, she was setting out on a research trip for the day with her Link and wouldn't be able to transport them home later so instead gave them the device to do it themselves. She was adamant that she trusted them completely to keep the Slate safe.

Link found himself quite curious how Mipha would react to the news that they were from another world. There was plenty of proof they could provide, not the least of which was the fact that they were quite literally older than the Link and Zelda she knew. He was mostly just hoping to avoid any awkward interactions while they visited; it would be nice to see his oldest friend again, but as always, the less attention he drew to himself the better.

As they approached the main gate, the Zora guard's serious gaze immediately gave way to a wide smile. He snapped into a deep bow before returning to his full height and addressing them with a voice that barely concealed his excitement.

"Zelda-sama, Link-dono, welcome back to Zora's Domain. Please, come in and make yourselves at home." Zel gave a friendly smile and answered.

"It's wonderful to be back; thank you for such a warm welcome. How are things faring here lately?" The guard relaxed, Zel's irresistible charisma drawing him into a state of ease. It always made Link marvel when she did that.

"Things are excellent, Zelda-sama! Since you, Link-dono, and the Champions felled Calamity Ganon, not a day goes by that darkness threatens the Zora. We owe you so very much and you will always be welcomed here as our honored guests." Zel shifted uncomfortably next to Link; no doubt she felt a sense of reluctance to accept praise that wasn't hers. It was just easier to allow the Zora to believe they were from their era rather than explain it to everyone they met.

"Thank you for your hospitality."

"Of course! I must ask, Zelda-sama, did you cut your hair?"

"O-oh, I did, yes! Ah, but my hair does grow extremely quickly, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was long again sooner than later!" Link stifled a chuckle as she tried to invent a reason her younger self would still have her long hair the next time she came here.

"Understandable; it's quite the marvel to we Zora actually, the way Hylian hair grows even after being cut off completely. However, I've kept you with idle small talk for far too long. Please, come inside and enjoy your time here!" Zel smiled.

"Thank you. Would you happen to know where Mipha is?"

Mipha-sama? She should be at the pools beneath the throne room right now. Sidon-sama had a bit of a fall earlier so she's patching him up."

"That sounds exactly like Sidon," Link murmured, a grin spreading across his face.

Thanking the guard once more, the two headed inside the Domain at last. The Zora were happy to see the Princess and her Hero Knight and made no secret of it as they called out to them, waving and smiling. Though it was nice to feel welcome, Link couldn't suppress the small feeling of annoyance. All this attention was much more exhausting even than when the entire Gerudo tribe had stared at him for the entire day. At least they were too awkward to approach and speak but every Zora seemed to want nothing more than to initiate a conversation with the two.

They finally made their way back to the pools, dodging as many overly excited people as they could. And once they were hidden away beneath the throne room, Link's eyes once again fell upon the sight of his oldest friend, Mipha.

She was standing with her back to them, her hand pointing at her tiny younger brother in one of the recovery pools. Blue light spilled from her palm, washing over the excitable Sidon. He wasn't injured that badly, of course, but Link could see the scrapes on his arms and legs being mended right before his very eyes.

Seeing her affecting the world around her again was almost jarring. Link had met her spirit back when his memories were lost. She had gazed at him through eyes wrought with guilt and longing, so pained she couldn't have hoped to hide it. He only had a few short recollections of her at the time, though. It took many more weeks for him to amass most of his missing time preceding the Calamity; some memories had kept returning to him for months after rescuing Zel as well. But for the first time since she had been lost to Ganon's soldier, Mipha was alive and he remembered their time together.

"Sidon, you have to be careful, okay?" her gentle voice rang out. "I'll always heal and protect you for as long as I live, but I don't want to see you hurt. Make sure you take care of yourself while you're playing and exploring, okay?"

The tiny form of Sidon gave her a thumbs up and an enormous grin. His teeth even seemed to sparkle in the muted light. Link and Zel each had to stifle a laugh. Though they were quite familiar with him in the future – the newly crowned King of the Zora alongside his bride, Queen Yona – his childhood self was impossibly adorable. He was still unable to form real words but his personality was just as charismatic and amiable as always.

As Mipha lowered her arm, the blue light fading, it was Sidon's eyes that fell upon Link and Zel first. He glanced over and, recognition clear on his face, pointed towards them. Zel couldn't help herself and waved, an enormous smile on her face. Her love of children was something that never failed to warm Link's heart. A moment later, though, Mipha followed his finger and saw them at last.

She still wore her Champion's wrap with pride, the sky-blue sash contrasting with her red and white skin. She looked every bit the kind protector of the Zora people she always had, though her signature Lightscale Trident was nowhere to be found. As her amber eyes fell upon them, though, she almost seemed to flinch. That was unexpected. Before Link could gather his thoughts well enough to say anything, she spoke, her face returning to its normal state.

"You must be the Link and Zelda-sama from the future." Zel made a small noise of surprise and Link blinked several times. She already knew? Mipha gave them a small smile and began walking closer, stopping several feet away.

"I'm sorry to surprise you like that – the Zelda-sama of this world came here personally and explained the situation to my father and I yesterday. She said it was likely the two of you would come here to visit and didn't want us to be taken by surprise." Zel glanced at Link with shining eyes.

"She's really done so much for you and I. We'll have to thank her personally later for looking out for us." Link nodded his agreement.

"We certainly will. Since we've arrived here, she's been the one to take care us and make sure we're both okay. Maybe we can think of a way to return the favor. But that definitely explains why the guard asked if you cut your hair."

Zel began giggling next to him and Link laughed alongside her. Mipha met his gaze again but, despite the lightness of the moment, her smile seeming to shrink. Perhaps his eyes were just playing tricks on him in the muted light, though.

"Just hearing you joke like that is enough to prove to me you really aren't the Link I know in this world. You seem so familiar but the way you present yourself tells me that so much is different about you."

"The opposite is true for me – you seem exactly like the Mipha I used to know in my world." Her eyes glazed over with sadness.

"Then it's true…you really do come from the future Terrako tried to prevent for all of us here. A future where myself and the other Champions were felled by Ganon…"

"It's true," Link admitted. "Zel here is the one who created the Terrako that jumped through time to this world." Mipha flinched almost imperceptibly. Had something he said upset her?

"Hearing that, I believe it's safe to assume what I was told about your relationship with Zelda-sama was true as well?"

"Hearing what?" His partner giggled to his left and turned towards him.

"You called me 'Zel' a moment ago." Link's eyes widened.

"I didn't even realize. It's just so automatic for me these days." Mipha's soft voice spoke again.

"It's not like you have reason to hide things here. Besides, you should make yourselves at home and relax after coming so far out of your way – I appreciate you journeying all the way out here just to visit me. How long has it been since last I was alive in your world?" Link met her gaze, his own somber.

"More than a century." She hung her head, casting her eyes downward.

"One hundred years…hardly a third of a Zora's life but such an impossibly long time for so many others. Forgive me for bringing it up." Link just shook his head.

"Don't feel bad; we're not happy about it, of course, but we had to accept the truth of our world long ago. I consider it a gift that Zel and I get to meet you here again. It's been a lifetime." Mipha raised her gaze once more. Her fingers twitched at her side but she didn't move any further.

"Oh, um, perhaps we should find someplace more comfortable to relax together, don't you think? I wouldn't want you or Zelda-sama to be uncomfortable," she proposed. Zel was the first to speak up, a serene smile on her lovely face.

"Nonsense, Mipha. Please, tend to your brother. We're happy to stay right here with you."

"Not to worry; Sidon is perfectly fine now. I was just finishing up when you arrived."

"In that case, I feel less like I'm intruding for doing this."

Zelda stepped forward and wrapped her arms around the Zora Princess. She gasped and looked around in surprise before somewhat awkwardly settling into the embrace, hugging her back, albeit rather timidly.

"It's been a long time, Mipha. I'm so thrilled to see you alive and well," Zel murmured. Mipha nodded against her at last.

"After everything you've been through, I'm so glad you have the chance to at least meet your old friends again here. Thank you for your kindness, Zelda-sama."

"Zelda."

"Hm?"

"Just call me 'Zelda,' please. I don't consider myself Royalty anymore in my time and you're far too close a friend to be addressing me formally anymore."

"Um…it might take some adjusting, but if you insist, I'll do my very best…Zelda."

"Thank you. That feels so much better to hear."

At last, Zel released Mipha and stepped back, a satisfied smile on her lips. Link couldn't get over just how easily she was able to draw people to her and win them over. Even the skittish Zora Princess had relaxed into her embrace with just a few words. However, Mipha still looked a bit uncomfortable despite his partner's best efforts. She wasn't done just yet though.

"You know, Link has missed you a lot too. You were his best friend for so long; I'm sure he'd enjoy a hug even if he may not admit it."

Her voice was filled with teasing delight but Link knew she was being sincere as well. She wanted him to be able to greet his oldest friend properly after more than a century. And she also knew Link well enough to know he would never initiate a hug himself with anyone other than her.

"O-oh, um…" Mipha seemed a bit rattled by the prospect.

Perhaps she was still feeling a bit awkward given the nature of her emotions. Link had learned well her hidden feelings for him thanks to her brother and father in his own time. The Zora Armor she had made specifically to fit him was proof enough of her devotion and commitment to him, the deep love for him she had harbored within her heart known only to her family. These days, Link was well aware of the truth thanks to his first adventure through Hyrule upon his awakening. Zel, of course, knew as well.

"It's okay, you don't have to if you're uncomfortable," Link assured her

In truth, he very much wanted to hug his friend again. She had died all alone in his world, come face to face with Ganon's blight and faced it with no one by her side to help her. To see her alive again was truly wonderful. But Link had no intention of trying to force her into anything that made her feel awkward. She shook her head quickly, though.

"N-no, it's okay. It would…make me happy."

Mipha approached slowly and reached out towards him, her hands unsteady. Had something bad happened between herself and the Link she knew? Why was she so uncomfortable about this? They used to hug when they were much younger all the time – it was how they finished each and every play date. Normally it was Link himself that would have felt uncomfortable at the prospect of embracing anyone aside from Zel. Maybe she'd feel a little better if he reassured her?

Link pulled her into his arms, earning a small gasp of surprise from his friend. Timidly, she wrapped her arms around him. It felt a bit strange at first – Zel was the only person who'd hugged him in as long as he could truly remember, much less that he'd hugged back. It was nice, though, to actually be able to hug her once more.

"It's so good to see you again, Mipha," Link told her, a warm smile on his face.

She didn't respond right away. Link chanced a look down towards her and stifled a surprised gasp. She was on the verge of tears, her lip trembling and her eyes glassy. Zel hadn't seemed to notice yet and he didn't want to draw too much attention to her, but he couldn't justify just standing there and watching her be so upset. Not after all she'd gone through a century ago. Not after he had failed to save her, too…

"Mipha, are you okay?" Zel perked up at his question and looked a little more closely, her face falling as she noticed the distraught state the Zora Princess was in. Mipha took an unsteady breath before shaking her head.

"…no. I'm so sorry, I just can't do this."

She pulled away from Link fast, turning on her heel and hurrying away from them. As she rushed towards the heart of Zora's Domain again, it looked as if she were wiping tears from her cheeks with her small hands. Link had no idea what to say or do; he just stood dumbfounded and gazed after her, mouth agape. Zel stepped close and threaded her fingers between his, giving his hand a comforting squeeze.

"Are you okay? What happened to her…?" Link shook his head.

"I'm okay, don't worry. But…I don't know what just happened. I've never seen her like that before. Even when she was a spirit in our world, she wasn't like this. Something must have hurt her…" Zel chewed her lip and glanced in the direction Mipha had just disappeared.

"Should we…check on her?" Link grimaced before responding in a low voice.

"I think it'd be better if just you did." She turned towards him, surprise in her gaze.

"Me? How come? You're Mipha's best friend."

"I know. But it seemed like I was the reason she was so upset. Obviously we didn't do anything, but maybe she and my other self are going through a rough patch…"

"Well…if you really think that's the best choice, then I don't mind checking in on her by myself. But you stay close by, okay? I know Mipha will come around…and I still don't want you anywhere but by my side." Link gave her a small smile.

"Of course, Zel. I wouldn't ever leave you alone, certainly not in a world that isn't ours." She gave him a small smile and nodded.

"We should probably go after her."

Before they could take a step though, the tiny Sidon walked up beside Zel and tugged at her wrist. She couldn't help but light up as her eyes fell upon the Zora child, kneeling down and patting his head. Sidon flashed a bright smile, a twinkling light dancing across his teeth.

"Hi there! You probably want to play, huh?" she sang, her own smile growing bright. The little Zora Prince nodded and gave a thumbs up. Link grinned and approached, kneeling down next to his partner.

"We have to go check on your big sister first, okay? But after that, the four of us can have all sorts of fun together." Sidon nodded enthusiastically, giving them another toothy smile. Zel rose to her feet and offered him her hand.

"We'll take you back to your father in the throne room for now, okay?" He grabbed Zel's hand and stepped next to her, happy with the offer it seemed. "Link, do you want to help me out too?"

Link stepped to Sidon's side and took his other hand. There was something strangely fitting about the situation – the two of them holding the hands of a child and leading them somewhere. They'd done it before in Hateno quite often. Zel started walking forward and Link fell into step with her, Sidon happily bobbing along between the two. At one point, he jumped from the ground and, reacting quickly, the two lifted him up and swung him as they continued along, earning a bout of delighted laughter from their tiny companion.

Zel began laughing but Link's heart was only half in the moment this time. Making the little Sidon happy was nice, sure, but Mipha was hurting right now, pretty badly from the looks of it. He hadn't been able to do anything for her in their own time, but perhaps here he could help. The best thing he'd be able to do was leave it to Zel for now, though. He only hoped whatever she'd gone through hadn't ruined their friendship…

"Are you sure you don't want to come with me?" Zelda asked in a whisper. Link gave a small nod, his face somber.

"I do. But it's probably the best thing for Mipha not to see me right now if I'm the reason she's so upset. I won't leave though; I'll stay right here."

The couple had made their way up the ramps that led to Vah Ruta's reservoir. After leaving Sidon with King Dorephan, who had greeted them with enthusiasm and no small amount of interest in their situation, they learned from a few of the guards that Mipha had headed up to the Divine Beast's massive pool. Now, they stood just below the top of the final ramp, the large expanse that overlooked the lake just feet away.

"I promise I'll make sure she's okay," Zelda whispered, giving Link's hand a squeeze. He wasn't at fault for anything that might have happened in this world, but he sure looked like he blamed himself. She didn't want him to bear this burden all alone. This time, she could help both of them.

"Thank you, Zel. Call me if you need me; I'll be right here."

"I will." Leaning in close, Zelda kissed him softly and gave his hand another reassuring squeeze before taking a steadying breath and finishing her climb up the ramp.

The sunlight glinted off the silver and blue surfaces with the same dazzling fervor as it always did in Zora's Domain. Vah Ruta itself was resting in the lake, its enormous frame appearing smaller when compared to the cliffs and mountains that surrounded the pool on all sides. Yet nothing drew Zelda's eye as effortlessly as the flash of red a short way down the dock.

Mipha had a practice spear in her hands, one that was both shorter than and lacked the expert craftsmanship of her preferred weapon. The difference in size didn't seem to bother her, though, as she moved around the dock gracefully, swinging the silver spear with ease.

She was clearly going through some sort of routine. The way one movement flowed directly into the next reminded Zelda of the very water Mipha had such dominion over. Each flourish of her arm was akin to the ebb of the ocean tide. Each leap into the air was a lapping wave. The sight was only enhanced as she summoned and manipulated actual water around her, riding a small geyser of her own invention several feet into the air and leaping from it with majestic poise.

Mipha was far enough away she hadn't noticed Zelda's presence yet. She was glad for that; seeing Mipha move like this was almost enthralling. She didn't want to interrupt. She had seen the Zora Princess do battle before in the months leading up to the Calamity in her own world, but she had never truly appreciated just how gracefully the lithe warrior carried herself.

Mipha landed atop the geyser once again and rested in the water, staring out at the lake for several moments. Time seemed to stand still as Zelda took in the sight, wondering what dazzling choreography Mipha would bestow upon her next. What happened a moment later, though, was the complete opposite of her previous motions.

Mipha leapt into the air again, raising the practice spear above her head with both hands. An anguished wail burst forth from the Zora Princess as she hurled the weapon as hard as she could into the lake before her. Gone were the graceful movements she had employed before; that had been about as violent an action as Zelda could envision the gentle Zora giving into.

The spear splashed into the water before sinking as Mipha herself zipped down the geyser again, rending it in two with her very body. The water burst outwards around her and splashed harmlessly across the dock. Mipha had landed on her knees, still gazing out at the water. Zelda wasn't sure if she should announce her presence at this point or not but it certainly seemed that Mipha had hit a pause at last. Perhaps it was time to approach.

Before Zelda could take a single step, though, the Zora Princess fell forward, her head lying atop her arms as she all but curled into a ball. Sensing she must be deeply upset, Zelda hurried towards her, throwing any attempt at subtlety away. Whatever had been eating away at the poor girl earlier was clearly overwhelming her now.

By the time Zelda had closed the distance between them, she could hear Mipha crying softly into her arms, unwilling or unable to move from the position she'd curled into. There was no way a warrior of her caliber hadn't heard Zelda's approaching footsteps, certainly not as she splashed through the shallow water that adorned the area around her. But still, the poor girl neither moved nor spoke.

"Mipha?" Zelda chanced, not wanting to startle her. She didn't react at all aside from silencing the sounds of her despair. Zelda knelt down beside her, placing a hand on her shoulder.

"Mipha…what happened? What's hurt you so badly?"

No answer.

"Do you want to come sit on the bed back by the ramp with me? It has to be more comfortable than the cold ground."

At last, Mipha moved to her knees again, wiping at her cheeks before meeting Zelda's gaze. Her amber eyes were swimming with tears still. Zelda wasn't quite sure what to do – she had never before tried to comfort Mipha like this.

She wouldn't be given much of a choice in the matter, though, as Mipha lost control again, tears spilling down her face despite the incredible effort she made to hold them back. A moment later, the Zora Princess fell against Zelda's chest and threw her arms around her, practically sobbing into her shoulder.

"Mipha…it'll be okay. Whatever's going on, I promise it'll be okay…" Mipha only held tighter.

Zelda wrapped her own arms around the girl, pulling her close. It was the second time in as many days that she had held someone she had never dreamed of embracing in such a manner. First it was her past self and now Mipha. Both of them were so small and delicate in her arms. It was a strange sensation. Zelda's train of thought was derailed as Mipha spoke at last, hiccupping between her wails of misery.

"Z…Zelda…"

"It's okay. I'm here for you, Mipha. I don't know what happened to you, but you're not alone anymore. I'll be right here to support you. And so will Link, if you'll let him be."

At the mention of his name, Mipha tensed up and buried herself further into Zelda's embrace. So it was Link specifically that she was upset about. Did that mean…

"I ruined my own life…" she managed at last, her voice barely able to break through her intense sobs. Zelda's heart sank as she began stroking her head the way Link did for her.

"If talking about it will help even the smallest bit, you can place your trust in me. What happened to you?" She drew several shaky breaths as her tears fell with renewed vigor.

"I…I…Zelda, I proposed…to Link…" Zelda felt her heart drop into her stomach all at once. Then that meant she was so hurt because…

"I…think I understand, Mipha. You don't have to relive it." It seemed the floodgates were already open though and there was no way she could hold back her words and emotions for even a moment longer. Despite her desperate wails, she managed to form words.

"I toiled over it for months after the Calamity. Father sat with me and spoke about the logistics of it for a long time. He…he supported me fully if I really…wanted to go through with it. He only wanted me to be happy…"

"Your father has always been a paragon of love and support for his people and his family. That he supported you so wholeheartedly is no surprise to me," Zelda assured her. Mipha continued quickly, her muffled voice barely reaching Zelda's ears. The poor thing was barely able to breathe as she tried to choke back her anguish long enough to speak.

"I…I finally did it…two months ago. I…I thought enough time had passed and the excitement from the C-Calamity had settled down enough that I could approach him with a clear head. And I…I did it. I invited him up to Ploymus Mountain, where the peak overlooks the entire Lanayru region. I offered him the…the Zora Armor I had handcrafted for him. I told him how much I…love him. I poured my heart out to the person I adore from the depths of my soul…"

Zelda could feel a wave of agony actively pass through Mipha's body. Her shoulders trembled, her body heaved as she took labored breaths through her steadily increasing tears. All Zelda could think to do was squeeze her tighter and hold her close.

"He was…so understanding. He listened to every word I had to say and though his own were few, I knew he truly understood the depths of my feelings. But…he…I…"

"Mipha…" The Zora Princess drew one last shuddering breath before completely breaking down, weeping into Zelda's chest and holding onto her for dear life.

"He t-turned me down…he was so gentle about it, so kind. But…he told me he couldn't accept my proposal. That it was…unfair to me and my feelings. I wasn't shocked; I know it would have b-been extremely difficult to make things work. But I still love him and I want to be by his side. So I practically b…begged him to tell me why. And finally…he told me the truth – he loves another…"

Zelda could truly only imagine that kind of heartbreak. Link had never turned her down but if he had…she wondered if she'd ever truly have recovered. After some time, she'd have pressed on with her life – there wouldn't have been any other choice. But it would have wounded her deeply for the rest of her days.

Mipha, though…she had such a good, gentle heart, far more so than anyone else she'd ever known. The anguish of losing the one she loved must be unbearable. No wonder she couldn't hug Link earlier. Even if they were from a different world entirely…the feeling of an embrace that would never be hers…

"Link has…always been my b-best friend. Even now I love him more than anyone. I want him to be happy, truly I do. But…I just wish he had wanted to be happy w…with me…"

"Mipha…"

Zelda pulled her in tighter. A fresh wave of melancholy swallowed the girl whole and her tears poured forth with renewed vigor once more. Mipha's body had slumped against her now, the only strength she had left found in her arms as she held onto Zelda with everything she had. Zelda's heart was aching for her friend. To get a second chance at living her life and to be met with such agonizing heartbreak…

For several minutes, Zelda said nothing. She simply held the broken Zora Princess, the sweet, caring girl who loved with all her heart. Mipha couldn't find the ability to speak any longer, instead opting to hold Zelda tight and desperately try to regain control of herself. It was only working somewhat. Zelda was honestly starting to feel a little worried for her; she hadn't drawn a full, steady breath in an upsettingly long while, instead gasping against her anguish as if she were drowning in it.

"Mipha, I want you to match your breathing with mine okay?" Zelda told her gently. She was struggling to get her body under control. After a long pause, she felt a timid nod against her chest.

Zelda took slow, deliberate breaths for a while, Mipha doing her best to match them. Though her breathing had started in the form of shallow gasps, she was now drawing deeper, slower breaths. They were still quite shaky but at least she was able to draw air again.

At long last, Mipha seemed to have calmed down again, as much as could be expected at any rate. Zelda never once released her, instead stroking the top of her head with one hand and embracing her as closely as she could with the other. She only hoped it helped.

"I'm sorry…" Mipha murmured. Zelda shook her head.

"You have nothing to apologize to me for, Mipha. I told you I'd be here for you and I will be. I meant that."

"Thank you…so much."

Zelda lifted Mipha's face gently from her shoulder and met her gaze, letting her hands fall again. The poor thing…her eyes were puffy and red, her porcelain cheeks stained by tears.

"Zelda," she began, averting her eyes.

"What's on your mind?" She hesitated, chewing her lip for a moment.

"I…have been so terrible to your Link…"

"He isn't hurt, Mipha. He's just worried about you. Link was the one who asked me to come up here alone to check on you; he was afraid his presence would upset you." Mipha sniffled and finally let her arms fall back to her sides, releasing Zelda for the first time in several minutes.

"It isn't his fault. I'm not naïve enough to mistake the two of you for the Link and Zelda-sama of this world…and yet I still froze when he hugged me. I still felt my heart break in two when I gazed upon the two of you together…though he never said it to me, I know the Link of this world has feeling for Zelda-sama. There could be no one else."

Zelda's own eyes fell, a somber weight settling on her shoulders. Of course the Link of this world was in love with her other self. It made perfect sense. It was the only thing that made sense if he weren't in love with Mipha herself. Still…

"I'm so sorry if my own presence makes you uncomfortable as well…" The Zora Princess shook her head.

"It doesn't. I was taken by surprise earlier, but I'm okay. I know you're an entirely different person and I harbor no ill feelings towards our own Zelda-sama anyway. Nor do I feel badly towards Link. I…want them to be happy. If their being together is what will bring them the greatest joy, then I would support their choice with all that I am…but…"

"But it still hurts."

"I cry myself to sleep every night, Zelda…" She instinctively hugged Mipha again as closely as possible.

"I'm sorry you had to witness Link and I together earlier when you weren't prepared for it, especially when you're going through such pain…" Mipha shook her head again.

"Please, don't apologize. I was prepared to meet you both; it just caught me off guard when I turned and you were suddenly standing there. I'm not upset with either of you, not in any way. Knowing the two of you come from the world where myself and the other Champions are gone, I couldn't be more thrilled to know that at least you've found happiness with each other. Nobody deserves it more than the two of you, especially after all you went through. Our Zelda-sama didn't tell me everything, but I know you fought Ganon for a century while Link recovered from a state nearer to death than should have been possible."

"We really have been through a lot. But that doesn't erase the things you're feeling now, Mipha. You don't have to compare your anguish to anything I went through in my past. Your feelings are your own and nobody's experience makes them less important."

"Zelda…thank you."

"Of course."

"Still…I owe your Link an enormous apology. I must have made him feel so uncomfortable…so unwelcome. Even from another world, he's my best friend and he hasn't seen me alive for more than one hundred years…and I pushed him away and ran off crying without a single word to him as to why…"

"I promise you, Link won't be upset with you. He'll only want you to feel better and he'll do everything he can to support you."

"I believe you…that's the way he's always been. Even now, the Link in this era would do the same…if I could bear to be near him at the moment…"

"You haven't seen him since?" Mipha shook her head.

"I haven't. Each invitation I receive to the Castle…I come up with an excuse to politely decline. Sometimes Father even invents new parties or celebrations to give me an alibi. It's not that I don't wish to share the happiness that everyone in Hyrule feels now that Ganon is gone, but…"

"The idea of seeing them together is too much, isn't it?" Zelda supplied, her face falling.

"Yes. I want them to be happy, truly I do. I would still risk my life in support of them, even now. But I'm not yet prepared to see them together. Even if nothing has transpired yet, just knowing Link's true feelings would cause my heart to shatter into thousands of tiny pieces were I to round a corner and see them together…I doubt I'd be able to keep the hurt off my face the way I managed to yesterday when Zelda-sama came to visit."

"I think it's perfectly fine if you take your time. If she knew the situation, I'm sure my other self would understand. In fact, she'd probably go out of her way to ensure you were comfortable, whatever the situation might be." Mipha gave her a sad smile.

"I know she would; she has such a kind heart, just like you do. But that's why I won't tell her anything. I don't want her to feel obligated to take care of me. I don't want to reveal to her Link's feelings before he has the chance to voice them to her himself. But most importantly…I don't want her to feel any guilt about accepting his feelings when at last he confesses.

"She is far too wonderful and selfless. If I told her why I refuse invitations to the Castle, instead of the moment she learns of Link's feelings being a happy one for her, she will instead see images of my face, wrought with tears of misery, when she should be crying her own tears of happiness. I don't want to put her through that." Zelda gave Mipha a gentle smile.

"You say she is wonderful and kind, and I agree with you completely. But I have never met someonemore selfless and loving than you, Mipha. That you would put their emotions so far ahead of your own, even dealing with such heartbreak…you are truly one of a kind. An amazing person that they're lucky to have in their lives."

"Thank you…" Mipha shifted around on the ground, trying to find a better position.

"Would you like to move back up the dock with me? You can't be comfortable here." Mipha offered a small laugh at long last.

"You're right; sitting here is terrible. Yes, let's go back to the bed at the end of the dock. I suspect that will be much more comfortable for you as well."

Zelda rose to her feet and offered Mipha her hand. She took it and Zelda pulled her to her feet. She wobbled for a moment before gaining her balance again. Glancing over her shoulder, Zelda saw Link peeking over the railing as subtly as possible. His eyes were pained. He had probably heard some of that, despite the distance they were. Mipha hadn't exactly been quiet as she spoke.

"Mipha…I won't say a word if you aren't comfortable with this, but would you be alright if my Link came and joined us? He's been waiting below just in case and I know he's really worried about you. Please don't feel any pressure, though; he wouldn't want that and neither do I." Mipha offered a somber smile at last. It was calmer than any other Zelda had seen so far at least.

"I'd like him to come join us. I've been very cruel to him even if it was unintentional. And besides, no matter what era, Link is my best friend. I don't want him to leave this place without getting the closure I'm sure he needs after the fate I met in your world." Zelda gave the Zora Princess a warm smile.

"You speak of others' kindness so often that if one took your words to heart they might start to forget that you yourself are the most understanding and caring person they've ever met." Mipha stifled a light giggle.

"That you feel that way is an honor, Zelda. Please, ask Link to come join us. I'd very much like to spend time with both of you."

Link soon found himself sitting between Zel and Mipha on the strange little bed at the front of the dock. His partner had come to get him at the Zora Princess's request, having insisted she wanted to be with both of them. She gave Link a quick rundown of what happened between Mipha and his past self. It wasn't exactly surprising but it still made him sad to think about. She didn't deserve to feel so heartbroken…

Mipha was still having a somewhat difficult time meeting his gaze but she also didn't look nearly as upset as she had earlier. Her time with Zel had at least helped her a little, something he was very glad for. Drawing a steadying breath, she shifted her body towards him, slowly bringing her amber eyes up.

"Link. I'm sorry for running away like that earlier." He offered what he hoped was a comforting smile.

"You don't have to be sorry at all. Are you okay?" Mipha hung her head.

"Honestly, no. But even still, I wish I'd realized how much my actions would hurt you before I ran away like that…"

"Mipha, I promise you didn't hurt me. I was just worried about you." Her lips gave way to a dejected smile.

"Perhaps…your worries are misplaced."

"What do you mean?"

"You shouldn't spend your time worrying about me, not after I behaved the way I did. After a century…I cast you aside without a thought as to how much pain you must be in yourself," she murmured. Link frowned as he watched her.

"Mipha…"

"I believe you when you say you aren't upset. But…I'm upset with myself. Even if you aren't from this world, you're still my best friend. And I was so cruel to you…" Link didn't want to upset her by placing a hand on her shoulder so instead he shook his head rather forcefully to draw her attention.

"You were not cruel. You were hurting, Mipha. There's a big difference between the two."

"Do you think…that might be why the Link of this world finds me so unlovable…?"

Zel gasped softly form beside him and Link squeezed her hand. Even if Mipha wasn't losing herself to the kind of soul crushing anguish that had caused her to sob uncontrollably against Zel earlier, she was still clearly in a very bad place emotionally. She continued before either of them could speak.

"It's no wonder he couldn't love me. When compared to Zelda-sama, why would he ever pick me…? I always try to be warm and welcoming but…perhaps I often do cruel things without realizing it until it's too late. If he really wanted a partner who would love him and never hurt him…maybe that's why his feelings never grew for me. After all, why settle for someone who can't make you happy the way you want to be? Why settle for good enough when you can have the person you really want…? Why-"

"Mipha," Link interrupted, his eyes intense. He hadn't let his voice rise but the magnitude of his tone yanked her from her stupor, her whole body jolting as if she'd been shocked by electricity.

"Y…yes?"

"Please don't ever say things like that about yourself."

"Link…" she murmured, her eyes wide.

"I'm serious. It's his loss to have walked away from you, no matter the reason. He has his own heart to follow and he's chosen to do that as everyone has the right to, but that doesn't mean you're somehow lesser because of it. There isn't a cruel bone in your body. You're the kindest soul I've ever met and the entire Domain would agree with me right now if I asked them. Anyone who earns your love would be lucky to have it."

Mipha blinked several times, her mouth falling slightly agape. She was probably a little taken aback by how impassioned he was. It was the first time Mipha would have ever heard him like this, in his own world or this one. But he couldn't stop, for her sake.

"I know you care for him deeply. You've always loved with your entire heart and soul and that's worth so much more than just thinking of yourself as 'good enough.' I come from a world where you're gone, Mipha. You never had a real chance to live your life. But in this world, you can. So I can't let you go on thinking such terrible thoughts about yourself, not when everything you're saying right now is completely untrue. You deserve better than that. You're not cruel and heartless. You're just not."

"Link…you…" His voice softened again as Zel tightened her hold on his hand.

"I'm not saying to pretend you're not hurting; even I'm not that tactless." That comment finally earned a light laugh from the Zora. "But I don't want you to sit here and say things like that about yourself. What happened wasn't your fault in any way. You followed your heart. You were brave and took a terrifying chance on what you wanted. That alone takes more strength than most ever realize."

"…do you really think so?"

"Of course I do. I've fought things that wanted to end the world more than once and I know what you did took more courage than I needed even to manage that." Mipha managed another laugh, this one more genuine.

"Actually, I wanted to ask you something…and please don't feel any hesitancy for my sake in answering this. I noticed Zelda's ring earlier – you proposed to her, didn't you?" Link was a bit wary but nodded all the same.

"I did."

"Were you scared?"

"Terrified." Her eyes widened in surprise.

"Really? Somehow I can't imagine you scared of anything." Link laid his palms out in front of him.

"These hands? They were shaking like they never have in all my life when I did it. I couldn't even get the ring out of my pocket at first; I was afraid I'd drop it and lose it." Mipha's face finally gave way to a small smile. It wasn't a sad display though; for the first time that day, she was really smiling.

"If it could even cause someone as strong as you to be overtaken by such nervousness…"

"I'm telling you, it's really scary! So the fact that you went through with it makes you at least every bit as brave as me."

"As you? N-no, that's not true. You're just saying that." Despite her words, Mipha's tiny smile was growing.

"Zel? Don't you think the same?" His partner leaned forward and nodded at Mipha.

"Absolutely! And by the way, he's not exaggerating – his hands were trembling like leaves before a storm."

"You…really think I was brave? For months now I've just thought I was stupid…" Link shook his head, meeting her amber eyes.

"It's never stupid to put your heart out there for someone you truly care about; it's incredibly courageous and admirable. You shouldn't kick yourself while you're down."

"…maybe you're right."

"I know I'm right," he returned, a slight grin on his face. Mipha picked up on his levity and laughed again.

"I can see I have no legs to stand on here. Okay…I promise I'll at least try to think of myself better from here and not beat myself up so much. Fair?"

"Fair." Mipha's smile brightened a little more.

"You know, I truly can't get over just how much you've come out of your shell, Link. I haven't seen you be so open with me since we were much younger." Link gazed wistfully out towards Zora's Domain.

"It's been a long time since then. Once I became a knight and was chosen as the hero to fight Ganon, I closed everyone out. I was under such pressure that I shut down and stopped speaking to basically everyone. It's something I've come to regret over the last few years." From his left side, Zel squeezed his hand tight again. She knew his pain on this particular subject.

"How so?" Mipha asked, tilting her head slightly.

"You already know all the Champions are gone in our world and how I was almost killed by an army of rampaging Guardians. You know Zel saved my life and I spent a century recovering in the Shrine of Resurrection while she pulled Ganon into a battle within magical stasis. But when I woke up I'd lost all my memories." Mipha gasped, her eyes growing sad again.

"You suffered something like that without anyone to support you? That must've been so…lonely…" Link nodded, a somber smile on his lips.

"I suppose it would've been if I even remembered I used to have people who supported me. But as I went around Hyrule, I started to piece together my missing memories again. These days, I remember everything that happened before. But at the time it was like looking through a gap in a wall – I could see familiar scenery, faces I had a feeling were important to me, but I couldn't grasp the whole picture. You were like that too…"

"I was?"

"I met your spirit aboard Vah Ruta."

"Oh…"

"You said such kind words to me, showed me such sympathy. You were so clearly heartbroken by what happened but I…didn't know what to say. I couldn't remember everything about you yet, just the little flashes of recognition I'd started to have. So I didn't say anything, just like before the Calamity. I didn't offer one word of comfort…didn't say a thing to let my oldest friend know I cared…"

Link let his gaze fall, sadness overtaking him. Zel held his hand tight but even her warmth couldn't chase away the guilt entirely. That was one thing he truly did regret from his past and it was something he couldn't make amends for. Mipha leaned forward, though, and gave him a profound look, her eyes intense in much the same way Link's own had been earlier.

"I'm sure the other version of me knew you cared, Link. There's simply no world in which she would ever think you cold enough to cast her aside, not if she and I are the same person in any meaningful way." It didn't take the pain away completely…but her words helped more than he'd ever expected. Link felt his lips twitch and a small smile appeared.

"Thank you, Mipha. Hey, how did this happen? I was supposed to be listening to you, not the other way around." His comment earned a light giggle from his oldest friend.

"I don't mind this change at all. In fact, when I hear the stories about what happened in your world…it makes me think that I've been dwelling a bit too much on what happened two months ago, if I'm being honest. Talking with both of you has made me realize that there's more to life than this one setback. But I just can't manage to move past it yet. I suppose I have to accept that time really is the answer to matters of the heart."

"Is there anything we can do to help you at least start to move forward from here, Mipha?" Zel asked suddenly, leaning forward and meeting her gaze. It was just like her to support their friend so actively. Mipha considered her with wide eyes for several moments.

"Something you can do to help me…? Hmm…you know, perhaps there is. I think…I'd like to hear about your lives together in your world." Link felt his eyes widen.

"Are…you sure?" She smiled again, this one even more genuine than the last.

"I am. Eventually, I'll have to accept the truth of this world for myself. But before that, perhaps hearing that two of my most treasured friends from a timeline where disaster befell them have found happiness together will help ease me into the reality I'll need to confront someday."

"Well…if you're certain." Mipha nodded again, a little more confidence in her movements.

"If things are too hard, I'll let you know. But I somehow think that first night I cried into my pillow for hours and hours will be difficult to beat. Not that that's changed much…"

She gave a derisive laugh. Link knew a part of her was trying to make light of the situation but he couldn't help noticing that telltale hollowness in her eyes again. She wasn't just using some light self-deprecation to ease the tension of the moment…she was beating herself up for her feelings again. Kicking herself while she was down, just like before.

"Mipha," Link began softly. As if snapping from a daze, she came back to reality and met his gaze again.

"Y-yes?"

"Didn't you promise me you wouldn't beat yourself up while you're hurting anymore?"

"I…wasn't…" Link gave her a small smile.

"Who do you think you're trying to fool here? I may have been asleep for a century but I still remember how bad you are at lying to me." This finally earned a very real laugh from Mipha.

"I should know better than to try misleading my best friend, shouldn't I? You're right; I feel ashamed of myself for letting this get to me as badly as it has, certainly for so long. And the longer it goes on, the worse I start to feel after I break down like I did before…"

"How come? It doesn't make you weak; it just means you really care."

"I know you're right. But…somehow I can't shake the sense that letting my emotions overwhelm me so makes me…pitiable, perhaps." Link shook his head.

"It doesn't. If anything, it's admirable that you have a heart that can love so deeply. I've completely gone to pieces before and I don't think it makes me weak or pitiable any more than it would you." Mipha's eyes widened.

"You…have?"

"I have."

"Can I ask when?" Link took a steadying breath.

"I'd rather we not go into the extreme details today – we're here for you after all – but recently…I almost lost Zel forever…" His partner squeezed his hand beside him, drawing closer and leaning against his side. Mipha's eyes grew wide with shock.

"What…? Obviously you didn't, though! Oh, I can't tell you how happy I am you didn't. Thank the Goddess…" Link smiled.

"You're right; I didn't. And I couldn't be happier myself. But for a while there, especially after I learned the truth of what happened…I was completely inconsolable. I cried myself to sleep so many nights. But the first night was far and away the worst…I don't know that I've ever been a bigger mess in all my life."

Zel gripped his arm tight. He knew she was upset he had endured those things alone. It certainly didn't help that he'd never told her that particular detail. He shifted his arm from her grip so it rested around the small of her back, drawing her in close. He didn't want to make a huge show of it in front of Mipha, but he wanted Zel to know everything was okay now. Her hands took up new residence against his side.

"So even you've gotten to that point?" Mipha asked, her eyes wide.

"Yeah, even me."

"I…guess I never stopped to consider that even the strongest of heroes have the same emotions as anyone else. Perhaps…I really am being too hard on myself. After all, despite those feelings, you still managed to move forward and save her." Link let a warm smile cross his lips.

"Not alone, but yes. I agree, though – you are being too hard on yourself. You've been through something devastating. It's okay to need time to recover. You have such a gentle heart, Mipha; you always have. You should spend time taking care of it and letting it slowly start to heal rather than beating yourself up for not bouncing back right away." Mipha's eyes were shining again. It was a sight he hadn't witnessed for himself in so long.

"You're…you're right. Thank you, Link. I need to stop destroying myself over this. It's already hard enough as it is." Link thought she might start slipping into darkness again but she gave a firm nod before gazing out at Vah Ruta and continuing.

"No more tearing myself apart for feeling heartbroken. No more thinking that I'm somehow at fault for being rejected. I know these pretty words alone won't mend my own broken heart…but the truth is Link is his own person. He is following his own heart just the way I followed mine. But just because he doesn't feel the same way about me doesn't mean there's something wrong with me. I couldn't see that until two of my most cherished friends pointed it out to me. I promise I'll try my best not to forget that again."

"I trust that entirely, Mipha," Link assured her.

"You know, I can't quite get used to this – you're being so open and emotionally vulnerable with me right now. I don't know that I've seen you that way…maybe ever, at least not with me." As he took in Mipha's words, Link pulled his partner a bit closer and felt her run her hand up and down his side.

"I opened up a lot after reuniting with Zel. I like who I am much better these days, too," he explained with a warm smile. Mipha smiled back.

"I'm enjoying seeing this side of you quite a bit myself. And I do sincerely appreciate the advice you're giving me. Thank you for watching out for me like always."

"What are friends for?"

"Exactly this. I was worried I might not be able to control my emotions…even though I asked for you to join me. But I'm finding it incredibly easy to speak with you like this, Link. I appreciate how patient you've been with me more than I can tell you with words."

"I'm just glad I can help you even some. And if telling you a bit about our lives back home would help even more, then we'd be happy to try." Mipha nodded, an easy smile on her lips at last.

"I would very much like to hear about that. If nothing else, it will be wonderful to hear about the happiness you've both found after enduring such tragedy."

And so, Link began to tell Mipha bits about their lives in Hateno Village, Zel chiming in here and there. They told her how Zel had come to live with Link in the cozy little house they now shared, how she had established a school in the village and personally taught the children every morning she could. Zel jumped in to add that Link did the same which seemed to both amuse Mipha and bring a gentle smile to her face.

After detailing the rebuilding effort they were currently undertaking as well as regaling her with some of their more lighthearted adventures, Mipha was wearing a calm smile, her eyes sparkling like Link hadn't seen them all day. She shifted towards the two of them and spoke at last.

"The two of you deeply love each other, don't you?"

"Yes. Very, very much," Link replied with no hesitation. Zel nodded her agreement from beside him.

"I can tell. I can hear it in the way you speak of one another. I can see it in the way your eyes soften. I can't put into words how thrilled I am that you've found your happiness, Link. You as well, Zelda."

"Thank you, Mipha," Zel offered softly. "Then…we haven't made things worse? Telling you all that?" She shook her head, her smile growing.

"Not at all. In fact, it warmed my heart a lot more than I had expected. Maybe I'm finally accepting that the similarities between you and the Link and Zelda-sama of this world stop at the way you look. Whatever the reason, hearing your stories made me feel…better, honestly."

"I'm really glad to hear that," Zel managed, sighing in relief.

"If the two of you can survive the impossible tragedies that have befallen you and still come out happier than anyone I've ever known, then what's to stop me from recovering even from this?" Link felt a wide smile steal his lips.

"I know you will Mipha."

"Link?" she continued.

"Yeah?"

"Do you mind if I change the subject? Hearing you talk about your world has made me curious – would you tell me about Sidon and my father? What are they up to in the future?" Link nodded enthusiastically.

"Of course I will! Well, for starters, your father has officially stepped down as King."

"He has? That's surprising. I didn't figure he ever would willingly if I wasn't there to succeed him."

"It took some time, but he actually managed to line up a perfect successor – Sidon is the new King of the Zora." Mipha lit up, her eyes sparkling as an enormous smile blossomed to life across her face.

"He is? Oh, I'm so proud! I always knew he would grow into a strong leader that everyone could rely on. His sense of justice and desire to protect this place even now are unrivaled."

"He's really something. He helped me a lot on my last journey, just like he did when I first woke up. I really couldn't have done it without him. I wish you could meet the Sidon I know; I think you'd be even more proud than you already are."

"Actually," she began, a thoughtful frown creasing her brow, "there's a chance I already have."

"That's right! Urbosa said something about Terrako bringing a future Chieftain of the Gerudo through time to save her life during the Calamity. The same thing happened to you then?" Mipha nodded, her eyes unfocused as she remembered the event.

"It did. Ganon's soldier had my back to the wall. I was making my peace with death when a blue portal appeared and my brother from the future charged out of it. He fought gallantly by my side. We were both on the brink of defeat and yet he still refused to succumb. He would have fought until he keeled over to protect me. Luckily, you came to save us in time…rather, the you of this world. It's no exaggeration to say you and Sidon saved my life that day."

"I'm so glad they got to you in time, Mipha. Can I ask something about that day?"

"Of course."

"Did the Sidon that came to save you say anything about where he was from? I'm just curious if he was the same one we've come to know so well in our world." Mipha giggled lightly.

"I can't tell you if you know him, but he certainly knew you. He recognized you immediately when you stepped aboard Vah Ruta. He trusted you with his life and sang your praises at every moment. He even argued with Revali-san about you." Link couldn't help but laugh, Zel giggling next to him.

"He did?"

"Many times, in fact! You should have seen it; Revali-san wasn't used to speaking to someone as stubborn as himself. Sidon refused to hear a word of slight against you, though. Actually, he got you caught up in settling a dispute between the two of them once or twice."

"…that sounds exactly like those two."

"I also remember that Sidon seemed very sad when he looked at me. He couldn't meet my eyes after our battle together without very nearly crying. He never told me directly that he'd lost me in his time, but I once heard him shouting on the battlefield when he didn't know I was near. He said 'you'll never again take my dear sister from me. This time, I can protect her.' I think it's quite likely the Sidon I met six months ago is the same one you know." Link nodded, considering her words.

"It certainly sounds like it. And that's exactly the kind of thing he'd say in our world too. I have to wonder though, if Sidon really came from our world to yours, how come he never mentioned it to me or Zel? And why didn't Riju either? She might've done the same; it makes sense that if Sidon was from our world, Riju likely was too."

"I remember Riju-san as well. She was so young but so reliable and strong. She and Urbosa-san were truly cut from the same cloth."

"You can say that again. Either way, sounds like I have to have a chat with her and your brother once I get back home again." Mipha laughed lightly.

"If he gives you a hard time, tell him the sister he so gallantly saved would love for him to be honest with you." Link grinned at her again.

"I don't think he'd ever give me a hard time about anything. Though I certainly gave him a hard time about not telling me he was engaged."

"Engaged!?"

Link and Zel laughed lightly at the abject shock on her face. It was the most relaxed she'd been all day. He was very glad she had wanted to talk about her brother if only for the fact that it brought her out from beneath the crushing sadness she was struggling with. It was only a temporary reprieve, sadly, but he was glad to chat with his oldest friend properly again. And he certainly had some stories to tell about Sidon's wedding.

"That's right; he's married now!" Link explained, his own smile widening.

"To whom? For how long? You must tell me these things! Is she good enough for my little Sidon? What's she like? You've both met her right!?" Link laughed before holding his hands up.

"Don't worry, I'll tell you. Her name is Yona, a Zora from further east. Apparently she used to live in the Domain but left when she was very young. She's extremely kind and supportive of Sidon; she helped him find his way when he had all but lost himself during the last struggle that befell our Kingdom."

"What happened to him?"

"He was afraid of losing her, of losing someone else important to him like he lost you."

"Oh, Sidon…"

"But Yona reassured him that she wasn't going anywhere, that she would stay by his side and help him with everything. That he didn't need to shoulder all the burdens of the Zora people alone." Mipha's eyes were twinkling with approval.

"She sounds like a wonderful match for my little brother. And if you have such high praises to sing about her, then I know I can trust that she's a truly good person." Zel spoke up at last, a serene smile on her face.

"I've met her too, though I don't know her as well as Link. From my impression though, she would move heaven and earth for your brother." Mipha's eyes sparkled in the sunlight. Link grinned once more before continuing.

"Their wedding was beautiful, by the way." Mipha's eyes shot open even wider.

"You were there!? Tell me all about it!" Laughter overcame him a second later.

They began yet another tale, this one centered on the day of Sidon's wedding. It had been a beautiful ceremony that had even succeeded in bringing tears to Zel's eyes. It was clear as day how much Sidon really did care for Yona and she for him.

It was also the first time all the Sages had been together in one place since Mineru had departed for the afterlife. That alone had led to all manner of ridiculous antics following the ceremony, especially between Tulin and Sidon himself. Link had noticed towards the end of his last journey that the two had developed a playful rivalry. Tulin saw Sidon as something of a distant relative he could have fun competing with and Sidon was more than happy to oblige that desire, perhaps remembering himself when he was young. That penchant for messing around, however, had come to a head not long after the ceremony – Sidon had very nearly accepted a water-versus-air race with the young Rito to see which of them was faster.

Riju put a stop to that plan rather forcefully, climbing onto a confused Yunobo's shoulder and poking Sidon in the chest while she made him promise not to ruin Yona's special day with a hard-headed contest like that. Though they both backed down, loath to incur Riju's wrath, Yona actually encouraged and even insisted they go through with it, much to everyone's surprise. So the two had raced each other to a dead-even tie while the new Queen of the Zora cheered for her husband as loudly as she could. Riju had grumbled about Sidon and Tulin for a while after that to Zel but she had done so with a smile on her face.

Mipha had delighted in hearing the stories about her brother's wedding, her eyes sparkling the entire time. Link idly wondered if Terrako really had the ability to bring people to certain points in time across different worlds if he could bring Mipha to their Sidon's wedding. But they had both been there already and she hadn't been. Wasn't that the basis of a time paradox? Maybe he shouldn't mention it at all…

"Thank you both so much," Mipha said suddenly, her face relaxed.

"You don't have to thank us," Link assured her. She shook her head, a smile stealing her lips.

"I do. Before you arrived here today, I think I'd forgotten how to smile."

"Mipha…"

"I put on a happy face so Sidon and my father wouldn't worry but I can't remember the last time I genuinely laughed and enjoyed myself like I have with the two of you this afternoon. So I do need to thank you. And I want to. So…Link, Zelda, thank you so much for reminding me I have so many reasons to feel joy, even still."

"Mipha…you're welcome," Link offered, accepting her wishes. Zel leaned around Link and met the Zora Princess's eyes.

"I know you've really been hurting and I would never think to dismiss your feelings. But I do think you have a lot of things to be happy about too. I hope with all that I am those things can help you going forward." Mipha nodded, a bit more of the gentle confidence Link was used to seeing in her eyes returning.

"I think you're absolutely right, Zelda. Hearing about my brother's wedding especially made me realize…I get to be there for it in this world. I'm…alive. I'm still here. I don't have to miss out on things like I did in the world you know. Like I would have if not for Terrako and Link and Sidon.

"I won't pretend I'm not deeply saddened by being turned down. But I'm starting to realize just how many precious moments I get to be a part of regardless. How many special memories I get to make with the people I love. How much joy and light there is in this world now that Ganon is gone. I won't deny my heart its time to heal…but I think I want to focus on the good things again too. After all, what's the point in Terrako changing our world and saving all of our lives if I'm going to wallow in misery for the rest of mine?"

Her face was still relaxed and gentle but there was a fire of determination in her eyes that Link rarely saw. When they were kids playing around in the mountains beside the Domain, she would occasionally wear that look when a particularly interesting adventure had reared its head. But to see it on her face earnestly with regards to something so important filled his heart with warmth. She would be okay. It would take some time, of course. But Mipha would be okay.

"I couldn't be happier to hear you say that, Mipha. Truly," Link promised her. She met his gaze at last and smiled that soft smile he had come to know so well in the past. In that moment, she was identical to the Mipha he'd always known.

"I owe it all to the two of you. Thank you."

"Don't sell yourself short – you're so much stronger than you think you are."

"I might actually be starting to believe you, Link."

As night fell at last, Mipha led Link and Zel down the long bridge that connected Zora's Domain to the rest of Lanayru. She wanted a private spot to say goodbye to the two of them without the entire population of the Zora overhearing the sensitive topics they'd discussed that day. Link was more than okay with that – he hated being the center of attention anyway and Mipha always drew the focus of the Zora people effortlessly.

The end of the day had been much more relaxed and enjoyable than the start. For the remainder of the afternoon, they had spent time telling Mipha more stories of their own world, listening to many of hers, playing with the baby Sidon, and simply relaxing around the Domain. She had even taken them aboard Vah Ruta again like old times. Perhaps it should have been more bittersweet, but Link found himself smiling the entire time. Her life was hers to live going forward. It hadn't been stolen from her. And in time, she would be able to push forward again.

They finally arrived at the end of the bridge and the Zora Princess came to a stop. She turned and gave the couple from the future a smile.

"Thank you both so much for visiting me here today. You can't possibly know how much your presence has helped me. I know you're from a different world entirely, but even still it feels as if I've always known you. I'm truly glad we were able to spend time together like this. And…I'm sorry again about how the day started." Her face began to fall but Link gave her a smile of his own.

"You don't have to be sorry at all, Mipha. I'm so glad we got to spend time together again. I never really had the chance to say goodbye to you properly in my own world and it's been wonderful to see you in this one."

"I don't believe we'll be saying goodbye forever this time, either," she assured him. "It doesn't matter what world we're in – you're my very best friend Link and that will be true regardless of the world you return to. And even though you're from the future Terrako came back to prevent, it warms my heart to know that you and Zelda are somewhere out there, happy and together despite all the hardships you've endured." Zel gave her a nod.

"The same is true of us. Knowing there exists a world where you, Urbosa, and the other Champions can live your lives peacefully does more to bring me joy than anything else I've seen here."

"We'll probably be heading back to our time in a few days," Link continued. "Urbosa said she'd come see us off at the Castle. I know it would be…really hard for you to be there right now, but we'd love to see you again before we leave. Only if you're up for it, though. We'd never want to pressure into something like that." Mipha smiled before shaking her head.

"You don't have to sound so apologetic – I wouldn't miss sending the two of you off for the world, certainly not after how much you've both helped me today. I'll be there. Happily. Just let me know when and I'll clear my entire day if I need to." Zel offered a bright smile.

"We'll look forward to seeing you again, then! Mipha…thank you for trusting us. Thank you for confiding in us and opening up to us. I know that can't have been easy."

"You might be surprised just how easy it actually was. In fact, I'm surprised myself. There's just something…comforting about being with the two of you."

"I couldn't be happier that you feel that way."

As a relaxed silence fell over them, Mipha stepped forward, taking a steadying breath before approaching Link. Her eyes were determined and her movements certain as she reached out and drew him into a hug of her own volition.

Link was shocked at first. When she had let him hug her earlier, she had been completely reduced to tears. But here she was, just half a day later, willingly embracing him. She was doing it more for his sake than her own; he knew her far too well not to catch on to that. But even still, she wasn't trembling, wasn't crying, wasn't even upset from what he could tell in the muted light. Maybe she even thought of it as a small step forward.

"I am truly glad I was able to meet you again, Link. Thank you for always being my irreplaceable and closest friend, no matter what worlds we each hail from."

Link finally managed to hug her back, a sense of tranquility overcoming him. Mipha, his oldest friend, the person he had once been inseparable from, was still alive in this world. She would get to live out her life instead of having it taken from her. She was determined to find her happiness, even in the face of such terrible heartbreak. She was truly inspiring, just as she had been when they were children together. Just as she was when she had taken up Vah Ruta's mantel.

"Thank you for being my treasured friend, Mipha. I'm so glad I finally got to see you again with all my memories intact." He hugged her a bit tighter. For the first time in a long, long time, his own heart felt light when he thought of Mipha instead of being wrought with guilt. He hadn't thought it possible before today.

At last, she pulled away, a wide smile on her face. Glancing over towards his partner, Link was pleased to see Zel sporting a soft smile of her own. Her eyes were swimming just slightly. The Zora Princess went to her and gave her a hug of her own, thanking her for her support and friendship too. Finally, Mipha stepped back and prepared to say goodbye.

"I should let the two of you return to the Castle now; it's been a long day and I'm sure you're both exhausted. But I promise I'll be there to see you off in a few days, no matter what." Zel smiled at her.

"We'll look forward to seeing you again then, Mipha. Take care of yourself, okay?"

"I will, in all the ways we discussed. Look after each other, you two." Link nodded and tightened his hold on Zel's hand.

"Always."

"Goodnight Link, goodnight Zelda. I'll see you in a few days."

"Goodnight Mipha, see you soon," Link assured her.

The Zora Princess turned around and jogged lightly back down the bridge that led to the Domain, glancing over her shoulder once more and waving. Link couldn't help but smile as he and Zel returned the gesture with their free hands. It was so wonderful to see her alive again, not to mention starting down the path towards mending her heart. He had lamented the way she'd died for years, alone and scared. That his other self and her future brother had spared her from such a terrible fate warmed his heart. The situation she was in wasn't the easiest to come to terms with, certainly, but he was glad to see her smile again, really smile.

"It's hard to know just what to feel, isn't it?" Link murmured. Zel leaned in a bit closer.

"About Mipha and your past self?"

"Yeah. On the one hand, of course I don't want your other self to suffer and be sad. I would never wish that on anyone, much less another version of you. But…part of me wishes Mipha didn't have to bear that sadness either." Zel's head nestled against his shoulder and she nodded.

"I feel exactly the same way, my love. I hate that the first thing she has to endure after having her cursed fate broken is being rejected by the love of her life…but what I will tell you is seeing you support Mipha today the way you did was one of the most beautiful sights I've ever witnessed."

"You really think so?"

"I've known you for so long, Link, and I don't think I've ever heard you be that open with someone aside from me. It makes me really happy to know there's someone else in the world you feel comfortable enough to be your entire self with." Link turned and kissed her forehead.

"You know, I wouldn't be comfortable with myself if it weren't for you, Zel. Thank you."

"Always. Did you enjoy seeing your best friend again?" Link pulled her in closer.

"Zel, you're my best friend. You always will be. But yes, it was wonderful to see her again."

"I'm so glad to hear that." A short silence fell over them before Zel spoke once more. "Link…can I ask you something?"

"Anything at all."

"Did you really…break down as badly as you said you did when I was…you know…?" Link's smile faltered as he remembered that little detail he'd let slip earlier in the afternoon.

"I did. I'm sorry I never told you, Zel." She shook her head and wrapped her arms around his waist.

"I'm not upset with you. I just…I hate that you felt that way and I couldn't do anything about it…" Link wrapped his arms around her and kissed her forehead, locking eyes with her.

"It wasn't your fault, my love. I never told you because I didn't want to worry you right after you got back."

"I would have done the same, I understand. But…what happened…?"

"Are you sure you want to hear this…?" Zel chewed her lip for several moments.

"No…and yes…I just…I don't want to ignore anything you went through back then, even if I couldn't have changed it. Even if it doesn't matter now…I want to be here for you."

"Then please just promise me you won't blame yourself, okay?" She took a small breath before nodding.

"Okay. I promise."

"Right after I found out what had really happened to you in the past I…hugged one of the Silent Princesses you left me and cried myself to sleep on the Rist Peninsula…" Tears spilled from Zel's eyes immediately.

"Link…"

She hugged him hard, curling up against him. She was taller than he was but the way she was leaning into him made her seem so much smaller. Link rubbed her back and kissed the top of her head.

"Hey, it's okay. I'm fine now. And you're right beside me again. That's the best cure for any sadness for me – after I fell asleep with you in my arms again for a few nights, I completely forgot about that and it never occurred to me to bring it up." Zel nodded her understanding, sniffling before raising her face to meet his again.

"I'm glad it went away so quickly after you brought me home again. I'll never let you be alone with sadness like that ever again, Link. I swear that to you."

"I know you won't, Zel. I trust you with all that I am." Zel giggled at last as he brushed the last few tears from her cheeks and eyelashes.

"Hey, that's my line," she teased as she slowly settled down again.

"I've always liked the way it sounds. I'll only borrow it for tonight, though, deal?" She laughed lightly.

"Deal."

"Hey, can I ask you a question now?"

"Of course, darling."

"Did I make you feel uncomfortable at any point today? Was I too close with Mipha for you at all? She's my oldest friend but you're my life partner; I never want to make you feel bad." Zel's eyes sparkled beneath the moonlight as she met his gaze, the short wave of sadness that had overcome her seeming to fully vanish again.

"You did nothing to make me feel uncomfortable today, my love. I would never doubt you for even a second. Seeing you with Mipha brought me nothing but joy, truly." Link's face relaxed.

"I'm glad. I just wanted to make sure; you mean more to me than anyone or anything." Zel nuzzled him before kissing his cheek.

"I hope you know how true that is for me as well."

"I know. Promise."

"Shall we head back now? Mipha was right – it really was a long day. And an intense one. I don't remember the last time you and I helped someone work through emotions that powerful."

"Me neither. This might've been a first for us. I think we need some time to decompress together after all this time travel stuff is said and done."

"Oh? Are you proposing one of those 'more intimate evenings' to me?" she teased, a grin stealing her lips. Link couldn't help but laugh.

"Only if that sounds agreeable to you, my love."

"I think you already know that the idea of any kind of evening with you is more than agreeable to me. But…you know what sounds best tonight?"

"What's that?"

"A nice warm bath and hours of cuddling with my betrothed." Link leaned in and placed a soft kiss on her lips.

"Now that can be arranged just as soon as we return to the Castle."

"I was hoping you'd say that."

"Then let's call it a night. Ready?"

"Ready when you are."

A moment later, the familiar swirling blue light began to engulf them again. Link instinctively reached out to hold Zel against him as a sensation of weightlessness engulfed his body. Even though the day had started off in a way he hadn't expected, it had been wonderful to see Mipha again, delightful to chat and joke with his childhood friend the way he used to. It warmed his heart to see her alive again and filled him with a calm sense of satisfaction. He trusted fully that she would be okay in the end. She was far too strong to let anything defeat her for long.

But when all was said and done, nothing warmed his heart more than returning home with his beloved Zel. It was just the perfect way to finish any day.

Post-Chapter Note: Welcome back everyone, I hope you enjoyed the second meeting with Mipha I've written. I have a lot of thoughts about this chapter and I'll share some of them here.

First, one of my biggest goals this chapter was to show the depths of emotional despair one can sink to when rejected by someone they love. It's a concept we were going to explore more in the original draft of the story, but obviously the chance to explore it came earlier this time around. The first draft of the scene between Mipha and Zel wasn't hitting me hard enough so I kept rewriting and editing it until I landed in a much more emotional place with it. I do love Mipha's character a lot and it made me sad to break her heart so badly, but I really wanted some of the content of this chapter to hit like a truck. I really hope I managed that in a way that felt believable and natural.

Secondly, I will fully admit to part of my motivation being that I kinda just wanted to make people feel really bad for Mipha. It didn't change the way I approached the chapter overall (that is to say, I didn't alter scenes to make things way worse than my original intent was), but after the mess the last story became, I wanted to see if I could make even some of the more vocal people feel empathy for her. She's such a sweetheart and even if she can't have the love she wants this time around, I hope she'll get a little more love from her audience. And it was nice to write Zel and Link (especially Link) supporting her so actively and unapologetically.

I had a bit of a hard time conceptualizing some of these scenes. The flow of the conversation between Link and Mipha was hard to nail down. The first few drafts were rambling messes and I didn't have a clear idea of exactly what I wanted to say/convey throughout that scene. But I feel like I finally managed to rein it in and focus it in the way I had imagined doing from the beginning. Writing emotionally distraught Mipha proved to be difficult especially in that I had to figure out when and, more importantly, how she should drift in and out of her sadness given her situation with AoC Link and the joy and happiness she would feel at things like hearing about Sidon's wedding and slipping back into her relaxed friendship with TotK Link. Hopefully the overall intent of that conversation and the lessons Mipha learned from it through Link's experiences came across well and made a lot more sense than it did in my first draft (lol). I also hope it didn't come off like Link was preaching at her. I wanted him to support her passionately but I tried hard to write him very carefully so it never came off belittling or condescending. I can only ever imagine Link being wholly supportive of his friends and loved ones and I hope I managed to avoid that pitfall entirely.

I never like leaving my characters on a sad note, especially not characters I really like, so I wanted to give Mipha a sense of hope and forwardness before they left her side. She'll reappear later but this is the last time we'll focus squarely on her, just like Urbosa with Chapter 3. So in that sense, I wanted it to feel like she wouldn't just cry her eyes out into her pillow every single night from now on with no end in sight. Of course, any of us who have been through similar heartbreak (though perhaps not marriage proposals) can relate to her feelings and we all know it takes time to recover form something like that. She may still cry and be sad sometimes like any of us would in her situation. But my last big goal this chapter was for Link to be able to give her the confidence and the support she needed to start taking her life back and living it for herself again. I hope that came across well and made some of you smile by the end. She'll be doing a lot more of that in her life going forward too.

Anyway, that's far more than enough out of me! Chapter 5 will be coming next of course, the first one that will completely and totally diverge from the original telling and further the story with entirely new content! I may write the second chapter of Hateno Winters first, I'll see how I'm feeling, but expect the next installment of this story pretty soon! Maybe a week, maybe a little more if I write Hateno Winters first. But either way, we'll keep moving forward from here!

Oh and happy Zelink Week by the way! Aside from maybe HW Chp2, I probably won't do anything differently for it than what I'm already doing with my stories, but let's all go read some great works from plenty of talented authors about our favorite loveable pair!

Thanks so much for reading and supporting as always and I hope you enjoyed the latest chapter. Take care everyone and I'll see you next time!
