Pentos ― Prince Reggio's manse…

As the sun rose in Pentos, Daemon mourned over his deceased wife's remains on the city's outskirts. He was left with unanswered questions as to why she would take such drastic steps. Laena's labor was complicated, and the Rogue Prince was still contemplating his next move. However, it seemed that Laena made a conscious decision to end her life on her terms rather than risk a procedure similar to Queen Aemma's. It was clear to Daemon that Laena must have overheard his conversation with the physician.

But there was nothing that could be done about it now.

Daemon silently stared at the charred bones and ashes that were once Laena Velaryon. Smoke and heat still permeated the air, and he could still feel the heat that emanated from it. Even though the Queen of All Dragon's flame was reduced to a certain degree to make death quick and painless, Vhagar's dragonflame was indeed incredibly powerful. Holding an urn in one hand, Daemon steadily approached to gather up the remains. A single touch was all that was needed to reduce the bones to ash in an instant.

I had hoped for a son this time. Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be.

Despite the unpleasant odor, the Rogue Prince collected the remains, carefully placed them in the urn, and sealed them securely. His primary focus now was on the welfare of his children, Baela and Rhaena, who were coping with the loss of their mother. With nothing to hold him in Pentos any longer, the Prince had decided to decline Prince Reggio's offer. His daughters' well-being was his utmost concern.

I understand that you wished to return home, Laena. It appears that your wish will be granted. I will do what I can to make it happen. My attention is now focused on taking care of our girls.

As Daemon returned to the roof of the mansion, he saw the heart-wrenching sight of his daughters grieving for their deceased mother. Rhaena silently wept while Baela mourned loudly, burying her face in her hands and calling out for her mother. Daemon empathized with Viserys' pain when Aemma faced a similar fate but in reverse. Laena had a choice while Aemma did not. Now, as a widower, Daemon had the responsibility of raising his two young children and doing what he believed was best for them.

"Girls," Daemon called out, capturing the attention of Baela and Rhaena. With a somewhat awkward gesture, the Rogue Prince invited them to come closer. "Please come here," he said.

Baela and Rhaena quickly dashed towards their father, wrapping their arms around him in a tight embrace, seeking solace from him. The Rogue Prince held them close, offering unwavering support as they wept. With one hand gently caressing Rhaena's hair and the other firmly rubbing Baela's back, Daemon provided the utmost comfort to his beloved daughters.

Rhaena's eyes were filled with tears as she spoke, her voice shaky with emotion. "The mere thought of my mother being away is simply unbearable," she confided.

Baela, her voice tinged with desperation, implored, "Please, tell us this is not true?"

Daemon said nothing. Sadly, it is. She's gone and she's not coming back. "Pack your things. We're leaving," he finally replied.

"But… but where are we supposed to go?"

"We're heading back to our true home, the one your mother always dreamed of returning to before she passed away," said Daemon as he presented an urn. "Her family is still at Driftmark and I'm sure your grandparents would be thrilled to meet you." However, they understand that their daughter is gone forever.

After settling all their affairs, Daemon and his daughters carefully packed their meager possessions into a small bag. The weight of their belongings was hardly noticeable as they headed towards the beach where their mighty dragons, Caraxes and Vhagar, awaited them. Although the foreign land had been kind, it was time to return to their true home in Westeros. Prince Reggio had kindly offered them to stay in Pentos, but Daemon prioritized the safety of his daughters. The Pentoshi elites helplessly watched as Daemon, Baela, and Rhaena mounted Caraxes and took off towards Driftmark, their ancestral home in Westeros.

"*Reeeeeeee!*" Caraxes screeched.

"*Ruuuuuaaa!*" Vhagar growled.

Red Keep ― Maegor's Holdfast…

Upon finishing Septon Barth's 'Unnatural History', Jaehaerys decided to take a leisurely stroll around Maegor's Holdfast's outer courtyard. As he wandered, he found himself in the castle gardens, relishing the tranquil atmosphere of the early morning. While there, he noticed an influx of sailors arriving at the docks for resupply or shore leave. Among them, he spied a young man with Valyrian features and a darker skin tone, who appeared to be intently studying a map. Jaehaerys couldn't help but observe him, as his face displayed a blend of seriousness and concentration. It's plausible that the young man was a distant relative of House Velaryon.

"Hmm. We could station patrol ships here at Scarwood and Grey Gallows. But that means these supplies… Gah! Blast it. We'll have to move the Bold Marilda and True Heart the Veiled Isle and Dustspear to cover the Sea Snake's right flank." One movement out of the corner of his eye made the sailor notice the prince's approach. "Ah, Prince Jaehaerys."

"Do I know you, ser?"

"No, my prince. You do not. My name is Alyn of Hull," he introduced himself. "I have had the honor of speaking with your father on several occasions. The Young Dragon's heroism during the War for the Stepstones inspired many at Driftmark to enlist in the Velaryon fleet."

Jaehaerys, the young scion of House Targaryen, sat attentively as he listened to the various accounts of the War for the Stepstones, an event that had happened before his time and during the first three years of his childhood. His father, Lord Corlys Velaryon, and Prince Daemon Targaryen had defied his grandfather's commands and waged war against the Triarchy, ultimately resulting in the expulsion of the Triarchy from the Stepstones. However, there were whispers of a more sinister nature, suggesting that Lord Corlys had meted out a harsher punishment to his enemies, leading to the weakened state of the allied city-states Lys, Myr, and Tyrosh. Despite these rumors, Jaehaerys could not bring himself to believe that his father was capable of such cruelty towards those who were considered unforgivable. "I see," he finally replied. "In any event, allow me to personally welcome you and our brave sailors to King's Landing, Alyn of Hull. The crown owes you a debt of gratitude." He extended a cordial welcome to Alyn of Hull and his sailors in King's Landing, expressing his gratitude on behalf of the crown.

"I appreciate your kind words, but I want to clarify that I didn't ask for any praise. If it's okay with you, I have a request to make."

"Me?" Is it concerning that this individual has chosen to approach me instead of their father or grandfather? "I understand that you may have previously discussed this matter with my father, but it seems that it may not have been given the attention it deserved."

"Still, you're the only hope these men have got."

"Please inform me of the nature of your request and I will endeavor to provide the necessary support to the best of my abilities."

"I apologize for interjecting, but some of our fellow sailors have expressed concerns about your father and the queen. They have heard unsettling rumors and would greatly appreciate it if you could provide reassurance before we set out on our next mission to the Stepstones. Our recent stop was solely for restocking supplies after our previous campaign."

"It will be my pleasure to offer my assistance in any way possible."

"Finally, someone who listens to our concerns," Alyn expressed with gratitude, his eyes reflecting his appreciation. "My men eagerly await the prince's message," he confidently took charge and moved forward.

Jaehaerys carefully examined every sailor. They were members of the formidable Velaryon fleet, which was the most extensive and potent fleet on the high seas. Each of the sailors was distinct from one another, originating from various ethnic backgrounds. Some were Andals, others were ancient Valyrians, and a few even hailed from the farthest reaches of the known world, all of whom had come to serve Lord Corlys. I could feel the anticipation coming from these men. Was this how father and grandfather feel every day when handling inquiries? How overwhelming it can be to feel like everyone is counting on you to make things right? Okay now. Take it easy. Just take slow, steady breaths, Jaehaerys, and know that you're doing your best. It's just like mother said: we all have moments like these, but together we can overcome any challenge. "I would like to express my deep appreciation," he began, "for the outstanding efforts you have made in promoting peace and stability throughout the realm, despite the obstacles you have faced. Some of you have dealt with the Triarchy before, while others are new to it. Nevertheless, you have all been through the crucible of combat, forging an unbreakable bond with those who have shed blood alongside you. My father and grandfather have been focused on domestic affairs, and I understand if you feel that your service has not been appreciated. However, I assure you that I will speak to my father and His Grace about improving conditions for you, your families, and your fellow men-at-arms outside the castle. You are not alone in this. On behalf of House Targaryen, we are grateful for your contributions and are committed to standing by you from this day forward until our last days."

Murmuring and gossiping were soon exchanged.

Alyn remarked, "Interesting. Was that considered a royal speech?" he inquired. "You didn't raise your voice, or make any threats, and you sounded quite sensible." He nodded thoughtfully. "It's a stark contrast from what Her Grace and Prince Aegon have conveyed to them. Your approach is evidently different from theirs, now that I've witnessed it firsthand."

"How do you mean?" Jaehaerys inquired.

"It means you're more approachable than the other Caltrop cunts."

"Ser Alyn!"

"I'm not a knight, my prince. Just a sailor making his way in the world with his bastard brother and our mother still at home on Hull."

Jaehaerys raised a brow. Wait… Alyn's a bastard? He couldn't say anything else when a Lykiri Mere, who remained hidden high up in a tree, jumped down from his perch in front of him.

"Qūvyrlēdys, Dārilaros Jāhayress. Vāedar issare vāettan. (Sadness fills the air, Prince Jaehaerys. The song has been sung.)" The acolyte informed him. Before long, he handed the prince a sealed scroll detailing a purple cobra.

Jaehaerys, feeling suspicious, broke the wax seal and began reading the message. His eyes traced the High Valyrian words closely. Before long, a stunning realization appeared on his face. "Drējior issa? (Are you certain?)" he asked.

"Hontes gaomas pirtra, taoba. Jikagon. Kepa aōha ajorrāelza kesir gīmī. (The birds do not lie, boy. Run along now. Your father needs to know this.)"

––––––––––––––––––––––––––

In the midst of a serious discussion about the future, Aeonar, Alicent, and Viserys were suddenly interrupted by the unexpected arrival of Jaehaerys, who rushed into the room with a note clutched tightly in his hand. Clearly out of breath, he addressed his father, mother, and grandfather with a sense of urgency, causing them to pause and listen attentively to what he had to say.

"What is this noise about?" Aeonar inquired.

"Jay, what's wrong? What's happened?" Alicent asked, worried.

"There's… there's been an incident at Harrenhal. Lord Lyonel and Ser Harwin are both dead!"

Aeonar shook his head. "What?" he said in disbelief. I knew sending my agents to Harrenhal would inevitably lead to this. Well, once they return from the long trek, they will have leads for us to follow… and find those responsible. The Young Dragon frowned deeply. But if they are who they are, then I might have an idea as to who sent them.

Another messenger came in. "Your Grace," he said. "Message from Pentos. Lady Laena Velaryon… she's dead too."

A messenger handed Viserys some letters, but before he could retrieve them, Aeonar snatched them away and eagerly opened one from Pentos, written in Daemon's handwriting. The letter detailed complications with Laena's pregnancy, where Pentoshi healers had wanted Daemon to choose between saving the mother or the child. Aeonar felt a wave of painful memories, but he pushed them aside and read on. Instead of choosing, Laena decided to sacrifice herself by dragonfire. Daemon was returning with their children and Laena's remains to hold a traditional Velayron funeral. There was no mention of Vhagar. The second letter from Harrenhal, written by Ser Simon Strong, Lyonel's uncle, was brief, reporting that the Hand of the King and his son had died in a fire of unknown cause.

As Aeonar perused through the letters, the urgency of the situation weighed heavily on his mind. The suspicious nature of Lyonel and Harwin's fiery demise sparked his suspicion of foul play. However, the list of potential culprits was extensive, and the evidence was insufficient for any conclusive accusations. Meanwhile, the untimely passing of Laena was a pressing matter requiring immediate attention. As the eldest child of Princess Rhaenys Targaryen and Lord Corlys Velaryon, Laena was renowned for her intelligence and beauty but also feared for her ability to ride the formidable Vhagar. Without her, the dragon would be riderless and pose a significant danger to all.

Aeonar's voice was resolute as he issued his directions, "We must act with haste and proceed to Driftmark. Alert everyone to pack their belongings without delay. We require the presence of Rhaenyra and Laenor to arrange the necessary funeral proceedings." He then turned to his father, "I'll send a message to High Tide. Lord Corlys and Princess Rhaenys will be devastated." With solemnity etched on his face, he addressed his son, "Inform your siblings to prepare themselves appropriately and dress accordingly for the somber occasion."

Jaehaerys nodded. "Yes, father," he obeyed.

Farrier, who had been standing behind Viserys watching them leave, approached. "You'll be needing a new Hand sooner than expected, Your Grace," he suggested.

Viserys was only able to process half of what Farrier had said. His mind was still in shock from the recent tragedies that had befallen his family. He knew that Rhaenys would be devastated, and he could only imagine the pain his brother Daemon must be feeling. Viserys regretted his last conversation with him and hoped that he could make amends when he returned home. Farrier mentioned the need for a new Hand, and Beatrice would likely want her father to be considered. Viserys thought about summoning Otto back from Oldtown or considering Lord Beesbury, but he was getting too old for the position. It was a difficult decision, but Viserys knew that he had to choose someone capable and willing to manage the stress of the role.

He needed someone at once.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––

"Best to make your way through life unencumbered… if you ask me," Larys informed. Now that both his father and brother were dead, he was now the new Lord of Harrenhal.

Beatrice took a sip from her chalice as she received news of recent events. Although the vacancy of the Hand of the King position pleased the queen, she was aware that it could lead to suspicion towards the Blacks. Aeonar, being a thorough investigator, would undoubtedly investigate the matter and suspect her involvement. However, Beatrice was also informed that the Lykiri Mere had caught the culprits sent by Larys after the act was conducted. Even though the offenders had their tongues cut out and there was no chance of them confessing, the queen couldn't help but feel paranoid. "Are they really dead?" she inquired once more.

"You've heard the stories of Harrenhal, Your Grace. It was built in hubris by Harren the Black as a monument to his own greatness. Blood mixed into the mortar. It is said to be a cursed place. That it passes judgment on all who pass beneath its gates."

"You mean you passed judgment."

"The queen makes a wish. What servant of the realm would not strive to fulfill it?"

"I am concerned about the possibility of being implicated in the judgment. Those… Lykiri, or whatever it is they call themselves; move to places where we cannot see or hear them? How discrete and elusive can they be? Seven hells, they're probably figuring out alternative means of extracting what they need to know. Even if it doesn't yield any bounty, the lines could be traced and connected which would slowly lead back to us."

"An unfortunate price to pay, but it's the larger principle that counts. I assume you will write to your father now?" Larys asked.

Beatrice felt a phantom noose tighten around her throat. If she had to act, she'd better do it fast. "If Aeonar Targaryen does find out…" she says.

"I feel certain you will reward me… when the time is right."

Alicent was meticulously preparing for her upcoming journey to Driftmark. With the diligent help of her handmaidens, she was meticulously selecting the perfect outfit for a funeral. After careful consideration, she chose a stunning muted green gown that was simply breathtaking. The diamond-like grid pattern on the gown's fabric resembled the scales of a green dragon, shimmering in the light due to the silk material's sheen. The gown featured a squared-off neckline, long angel sleeves, and an inverted pleat at the center front of the skirt, adding fullness to the already beautiful ensemble. To complete her look, she elegantly brushed her hair and adorned it with a dazzling olive-colored crescent headdress, complete with an attached veil that added to her ethereal appearance. All arrangements and preparations have been completed. The next step is to prepare the ships for departure. Alicent plans to stay close to her father-in-law, King Viserys, and her young sons Aegon the Younger, Viserys, and Daeron, as their dragons are too small to ride. However, she will keep her distance from Queen Beatrice. Her husband Aeonar will travel to Driftmark ahead of them with Jaehaerys and Aemma on their dragons, Vaelor, Vermithor, and Silverwing, respectively.

Beatrice's children, Aegon the Elder and Helaena, are set to ride on Sunfyre and Dreamfyre, respectively. However, Aemond will stay by his mother's side since he has yet to acquire a dragon of his own.

As for Rhaenyra, she will carry baby Joffrey on her chest while flying on Syrax. On the other hand, Laenor will join Jacaerys and Lucerys on Seasmoke. Unfortunately, the heir to Driftmark is consumed with grief over the loss of his sister, whom he was unable to protect while she was in a distant land on the other side of the world.

Alicent let out a deep sigh before taking a moment to glance at her reflection in the mirror. Unbeknownst to her, someone had entered her room.

"You bear a striking resemblance to your mother," the person remarked.

Startled, Alicent turned around to see a familiar face. "Father…?" she hesitantly exclaimed.

Chapter End

Author's Note: Now that word has arrived about what transpired at Harrenhal and Pentos, the stage is now set for the inevitable conflict at Driftmark following Laena Velaryon's funeral. But without a Hand, things will threaten to fall apart unless a new one is chosen. Who do you think will replace Lord Lyonel Strong as Hand of the King? A lot of speculation has been floating around amongst yourselves. And surprise, surprise! At the end of the story, Otto Hightower has returned to King's Landing... but at who's behest? Remember during the training courtyard Aeonar had sent word to Oldtown earlier? Well, the former Hand is back. Let me know your thoughts on what you guys think will happen at the funeral.

Garry: I have this question, will Otto be killed by Unwin and his conspirators, cause i could imagine a scene where after Viserys death, Beatrice and her father usurped the Iron Throne, would Unwin Kill Otto?

―I'm afraid I can't comment on how Otto's and Unwin's scenario will play out after that happens.

C.E.W: So the news of the tragedies has reached King's Landing, Lord Lyonel Strong, and his eldest son Harwin dead in a fire caused by Larys Strong. Laena Velaryon died at Pentos by the fire of her dragon at her own command. These deaths now open the doors for two spots to be filled in the wakes of these recent deaths.

First, is Hand of the King now that Lyonel is dead. The two top contenders are Otto Hightower and Unwin Peake. Ser Otto Hightower has served as Hand for two kings, Jaehaerys and Viserys... although a power hungry and arrogant man, his daughter's marriage to Aeonar makes him an ally of the Blacks now. Unwin Peake has been after the position of Hand of the King for years, but bids his time until the right moment.

The second is Vhagar, now that Laena Velaryon is dead, Vhagar is now up for the grabs, which is Aemond which will be the next stage of family tensions in House Targaryen.

Alyn of Hull, did not see his appearance coming this soon in the game. He is already become acquainted with Prince Jaehaerys, who knows it might be the start of a big friendship. The Caltrops clearly don't inspire loyalty, another disadvantage to add to the list.

Questions:

Has Alyn of Hull fought in any fights against the Triarchy?

―Yes, he has.

Has Larys Strong many efforts to throw suspicion of his father and brother's deaths off himself?

―Even if not right now, he's bound to get found out eventually.

What is Otto Hightower doing in the capital? It can't be about the position of Hand of the King, the capital had only just now received the news and it is long ride from King's Landing to Oldtown.

―I mentioned a few chapters ago that Aeonar sent word to Oldtown.

Will Aeonar and Alicent's children has any on-screen interaction with Otto hightower in the next chapter?

―I'll try.

Will any of Aeonar's children be with Jace, Luke, Baela and Rhaena when they confront Aemond?

―Can't spoil anything until the confrontation happens.

SupremeWarwick14: Daemon recollecting Laena's ashes reminded me of Kratos doing the same with Faye's ashes. She may not have been her first choice, but it's not that she disliked her. Like he said in the show, he loved her enough. I like that you added the scene of Daemon hugging his daughters for comfort. Well done, Daemon uses a lot of body language in the series and it's nice that you add that. I also like that you change his attitude, they will stay in Driftmark, for Laena. I feel really sorry for Corlys, Rhaenys and Laenor. Obviously, Daemon will ask to live in Driftmark, and everyone will agree, except for Rhaenys, which will blame him for her death. The thing is there was no way to save her.
I was surprised at the appearance of Alyn of Hull. He is very much like I imagined, trying to be polite, but direct and fearless. Also, he also represents the part of Westerosi people that are starting to know there will be an open conflict between the Caltrops and the Blacks as soon as Viserys rots away. While some nobles may look for a war for glory, many do not wish one, and neither do the smallfolk. Aeonar seems to know there will be a war, but he Is trying to prevent it by making his position far stronger. However, according to my knowledge of negotiation from college, I think he should try another approach, Helaena and Aemond could be betrothed to Aegon/Viserys and Aemma to avoid conflict. However, I know this isn't gonna happen.
Aeonar was disrespectful snatching the scrolls of Viserys. He is his king. And while some people may think he wasn't concerned for Laena's demise per se, but for Vhagar; I don't think so. I recognize his pattern. He is focusing on the greater picture. I know because I am like that as well. It doesn't mean he isn't sorry for Laena's death. However, my thoughts will be confirmed in the next chapter.
I can see that in the future there will be problems between Aeonar and Jaehaerys, as they will disagree on their methods.
I think there are three possibilities for Hand of the King. First, Otto. Second, Unwin. Third, Daemon. I am more inclined for Unwin as the conflict will be become more hot, but I think Viserys will choose Daemon, because he wants him home. Aeonar may not like that, but Daemon is on his side.
I also think that the confrontation after Aemond's injury will be different, as Aeonar will be present and he might try another approach. Likewise, he is gonna be angry at his father for trying to protect his sister, and with Aemond because Aeonar hates when someone gets in the way of his plan, and he never forgives nor forgets.
It was a great chapter. I hope you are doing fine and I await the next chapter.
Question:
- Meta question: Did you always intend for Alyn to appear or it's a call-out for the revelation of his actor?
―It wasn't initially planned since the actor who is expected to portray Alyn of Hull. It was no secret that Alyn of Hull was expected to appear at some point during the story.
- Will Aeonar say their condolences to Corlys, Rhaenys and Laenor?
―If not off-screen, then we expect the Young Dragon to continue supporting House Velaryon.
- Is Aeonar gonna have a discussion with Corlys for him ignoring the obvious about Laenor's "children"?
―I don't think now would be appropriate considering.
- Will Laenor have his book death or his series' death?
―I've actually been DM'ed that question a few times. While I can't disclose which path would be taken, I can, however, imply that there will be alterations as to how that scene will play out.

Guest #1: Here we go the return of Otto. Leana is dead and now lord strong and his son are dead. The board is getting set. Soon dragons will dance and Westeros will burn…..

randomdude24: Getting closer to the explosive feud that is brewing. I have enjoyed this series so far, you've done a great job writing flawed characters, Aeonar for example is dedicated to the Targaryen Legacy but his ruthless makes him more of a morally evil character, but that is my point you do a great job writing characters who are both good and evil, imperfect.

So far I do like Jay the most, he reminds me of Daveth Baratheon from Trials and Tribulations of The Oathkeeper. Smart, Skilled, etc. But that's what worries me Jay is the right type person to sit the throne but in a world like this, the right person never really sits the throne they either die or become another monster. Love to see a happy ending for him, but probably isn't going to happen.

suppes1: Nice update I'm curious on how Aeonar will handle Aemoned if he's going to try and claim Vhagar
