Dinner was delicious as always. Izzy loved the steak here and for the most part her evening had been perfect. Yes Patrick's reappearance hadn't been ideal, but at least he'd left right away. Even so, something was nagging at Izzy. Simon smiled and complicated the food, but still he was off. Izzy could just feel it. It was like a wall had gone up over Simon's eyes, and it scared her.
Izzy wanted to break the wall and see what was behind, but she was also terrified to do so. A little voice from deep inside her was telling her Simon was pulling away from her. Izzy tried to quell the voice. She had tried so hard not to be that insecure little girl she'd once been, but tonight with Simon's eyes so vacant she couldn't quite manage it.
But which was scarier? Should she ask the question and hear the words that could break her heart, or did she stay silent and hope she was wrong?
As they walked back into their apartment a third option occurred to her. Slowly, her eyes fixed on Simon, Izzy moved closer. She wrapped her arm around his side and began to kiss his neck. Then she moved up, kissing under his ear and along his jaw line until she reached his lips. Izzy opened her lips and explored the well known caverns of her boyfriend's mouth.
Simon's hand was at her hip now, but other than that he hadn't moved. The fear built up in her again. Maybe he really was bored with her. Overwhelmed with some combination of fear and love, Izzy deepened their embrace, pushing Simon up against the wall. It seemed to work. She felt Simon's other hand slowly move up her exposed leg and under the slit of her dress.
Just as Izzy was starting to believe everything would be okay, the door to their apartment opened and in walked their roommates.
"Get a room!" Maia chuckled.
They'd had the whole apartment to themselves until a moment ago, but it was fine. Izzy grabbed hold of Simon's hand and guided him to their bedroom down the hall.
"Now we have a room," Izzy smiled at her boyfriend once she'd shut the door on their bedroom. "Though I really do think it might be time for our own place."
"Actually," Simon said. "I'm not really in the mood."
"But it's Valentine's day," Izzy protested. He just shrugged.
Izzy watched as Simon loosened his tie and went over to sit on the bed. Everything was probably fine, but still his wall scared her. His rejection hurt. If he was pushing her away even if it was terrifying, the best chance was to break down his walls. Izzy took a deep breath and decided to be brave.
"What's wrong?" Izzy asked him.
"Nothing," Simon shrugged.
"Bullshit," Izzy replied. "This is me you are talking to."
"I just-" Simon started, but he didn't seem to find the words.
"You just what Simon?" Izzy asked, fear raising the volume in her voice. "You don't want me tonight? Might not want me in twenty years." She hadn't intended to bring this up, but she couldn't help it. The way he'd casually rejected the idea of marriage three months ago still stung.
"I wasn't the one getting hit on tonight!" Simon snapped back.
"Is that what this is about?" Izzy asked. "I told that idiot to leave didn't I? I can't control other people."
"I know," Simon said with a deferred sigh. Pulling his tie completely off now, Simon laid back on the bed staring up at the ceiling.
Izzy walked the few steps over to the bed and laid beside him, intertwining her fingers with his.
"I love you," she said in a soft voice. "More than I've ever loved anyone before, or ever will again."
"And I just don't understand that," Simon replied. "Sometimes I get so insecure standing next to you, and I start to wonder why you even want me."
A slow smile of relief spread across Izzy's face. All of a sudden her fears were nothing but a light breeze. Her beautiful Simon was facing the exact same problems she was. If it was possible for her to love him more she would have in that moment.
"I know exactly how you feel," Izzy said.
Simon rolled half over, and rested his head on his elbows to look down at her on the bed. Izzy turned her head to look into his eyes.
"That can't be possible," Simon said. "I mean your Isabelle Lightwood and I'm-"
"Simon Lewis," Izzy reminded him. "The love of my life."
He seemed quite startled by her words. She saw his eyes go wide and his mouth opened slightly.
"I know I'm not, well hot like Tom Ellis," Simon mumbled.
"Yeah that's cause you're real," Izzy told him, reaching forward to rest her hand on his cheek. Then she added in a more humorous tone. "He's just eye candy and besides, he's married." Simon chuckled, and Izzy could feel herself relax.
"I didn't do anything to earn my body," Izzy said softly. "It is just the one I have, and sure it looks amazing in a bikini, but that isn't who I am. Sometimes I am just a shy insecure girl who needs her boyfriend to call her beautiful."
"You are beautiful," Simon told her in that wonderful husky voice of his. "And so smart and kind and…" He trailed off, and Izzy was about to take the opportunity to lean forward and kiss him when his words stopped her. "Marry me?"
"What?" Izzy said, so taken aback that she almost fell off the bed. "But you said-"
"I know what I said," Simon told her. "But I was wrong. I love you so freaking much I can hardly bear it. It's true that we don't know what the future might bring - I mean just look at what happened to Jace and Clary - but I know with perfect certainty that right now I don't feel whole without you beside me."
"My soul's other half," Izzy whispered.
"Is that a yes?" Simon asked.
"That's a, what took you so long?" Izzy answered, throwing herself forward to kiss him.
The joy filling her now was more than she'd ever thought possible. As her soulmate kissed her neck and held her close Izzy felt safe, loved, and more complete than ever before. Simon's previous lack of being in the mood problems seemed to be gone. Izzy could feel him hardening even through his clothes and quickly worked to remove them. Her dress proved not much of an obstacle. She had been sleeping with his man long before she'd loved him, and long after, but never was it quite as sweet as this. He was her future, her family, and her home.
"Oh god, does this mean we have to plan a wedding now?" Simon groaned. "But Alec made that look like such hard work."
"I couldn't agree more," Izzy smiled at him. They were still laying on the bed, though very naked now and both covered in a thin layer of sweet from their exertion.
"Huh," Simon asked, without turning his gaze from the ceiling.
"Let's elope," Izzy suggested. That did it. Simon turned his head to stare at her. "I just want to be married to you. I don't need a fancy party."
"What about a little wedding," Simon replied. "I think we could manage that."
"Oh no, mom would never allow that!" Izzy said. "She might never speak to me again for eloping as it is, or force a party on us after, but it doesn't matter so long as we are married." She could feel the grin on her face, but paid it no mind. Izzy was focused on Simon's expression. There was wonder there as well as disbelief, but also affection and love.
"You really are a force of nature, you know that," Simon whispered, raising his hand to gently stroke her cheek.
"Just so long as I'm your force of nature," she whispered back at him.
"Yes," Simon said. "For as long as you want me."
"Forever then," Izzy grinned. Rather than reply, Simon rolled over and on top of her to kiss her.
"You should probably think this through carefully," Simon said, his tone teasing. "After all, you are considering marrying an unemployed guy here."
"I am definitely going to marry an unemployed Simon," Izzy told him firmly. Then she smiled and added, "However long it takes for you to figure it out and whatever career path you choose, I will support you just so long as you are mine."
Simon chuckled. "I think I've been yours since the first time you kissed me."
"Does that mean you are on board with my eloping plan?" Izzy asked.
"I just don't want to make your parents angry," Simon groaned. "Or my mom and sister for that matter."
"Oh, alright fine," Izzy sighed. "But it better be a very very tiny wedding, and it better be very very soon."
"You graduate in less than three months," Simon reminded her. "Why don't we plan it for May."
"Early May," Izzy corrected.
"Alright yes," Simon laughed. "Second Saturday in May it is."
"First Saturday," Izzy whined.
"Sweetie, your exams are at the end of April," Simon reminded her. "Don't you think that's cutting it a bit close?"
"Alright fine," Izzy sighed. "Make sense then." Simon chuckled lightly. Izzy closed her eyes to listen. She loved the sound of his laugh. She hoped they would spend the rest of their lives laughing together.
"We should probably tell people," Izzy said. "I mean if we are going to actually plan a wedding instead of sneaking our vows in at city hall."
"Good idea," Simon said as he got up and started looking for what Izzy could only assume was his pants since that was very likely where his cell phone was.
Rather than get up, Izzy just watched him fumble around naked for a minute with a grin on her face. All hers. When Simon did eventually find his phone, he called his mother. Rather than evies drop unintentionally, Izzy got up and put something on so she could go tell her brother. This seemed like in person news, and since he lived so close by it made sense to go over instead of calling. Simon's family lived so far away calling was really his only option.
After a quick shower, Izzy got dressed and Izzy blew her fiance a kiss before heading out. It wasn't that long a walk, but today Izzy didn't have the patience for walking so she called a taxi. Arriving at Alec's apartment building, Izzy rang the bell to be buzzed in. It was only then that she realized she hadn't called ahead and didn't even know if her brother was home.
When the door opened she was grateful for her good timing. Heading up the stairs it wasn't long until she made it to their apartment door. It wasn't locked and she walked right in.
"This is unexpected. What brings you by?" Alec asked. He was sitting on the couch with his head tilted in her direction.
"Just wanted to share some news," Izzy said. She looked around and added, "Where's Magnus?"
"Work," Alec sighed, pausing whatever game he'd been playing on the tv.
"But, I thought you two patched everything up?" Izzy asked.
"Oh, we did," Alec said, getting up off the couch to turn and face her. "And darn if that man isn't good at making me worry for nothing, but he still has a job even if he isn't using it to avoid me anymore."
"Well then I'll just tell you," Izzy said, smiling despite herself. "Simon and I are engaged."
"That's wonderful!" Alec said, running up to her and wrapping both his arms around her. Before Izzy knew it she was being spun in circles.
"I'm so happy for you guys," Alec beamed at her once he'd put her down.
"Thanks," Izzy grinned. "We are thinking, mid May."
"That's fast!" Alec replied.
"Well I was thinking next week but Simon wanted more of a wedding so this was the compromise," Izzy answered.
"Fair enough," Alec replied, then his eyes widened and he got an excited look on his face. "Do you know what this means?" he asked.
"No, what?" Izzy giggled.
"This is gonna take all the pressure off Magnus and me about grandkids," Alec exclaimed.
"I take it mom's been nagging," Izzy laughed.
"It's all 'you've been married almost two years now, where are my grandchildren,' whenever I talk to mom these days," Alec replied. He sighed at the end but his impression of their mother was rather spot on. "I keep reminding her there isn't a womb in this marriage, but does that make her change her tune, no. She just says I'm making excuses."
"I mean you are," Izzy laughed. "But it's okay. I won't hold that against you."
"Thanks," Alec grinned. "Best sister ever."
"I'm your only sister!" Izzy reminded him, but Alec's only reply was to hug her again.
What do you guys think? Adorable or rushed? I originally had a much more tearful long and dramatic plan to get these two engaged, but I threw it out the window. This story has had enough drama!
Also if you hadn't noticed the only chapter titles that I've ever used more than once are the words 'roommate' and 'soulmate' because of the Story title. ^_^ This is the second soulmate chapter and there have been two roommate chapters as well, but every other title word has never been repeated! :D
Sneak Peek Chapter 191
It had been a while now since Alec and Magnus had returned home from his aunt's place. His aunt's explanation had helped, but Magnus had been feeling more like himself since confessing everything to his husband and getting such a warm loving response in return. The whole experience had clarited something for Magnus. It no longer mattered what Magnus was worthy of. All that mattered was how Alec felt and Alec loved him unconditionally so Magnus would be happy till the end of his days.
Even so his husband was still a spoiled brat. Alec had been trying to convince Magnus to quit his job since the day they'd arrived back home. Magnus had cut his hours down to four days a week so with his one day of volunteering at the museum a week it worked out to a standard 5 days on 2 days off schedule like he used to have before Magnus had started using his job to hide from his life. He suspected that Alec mostly wanted him to quit because Alec now associated Magnus's working with Magnus's pulling away from him. Magnus was working hard to repair this association by giving his husband endless love and attention the moment he got home from work every day.
