20th August
"Hi," Jane said, swallowing as Maura opened her front door.
"Hi," Maura sighed.
"Are you okay?" Jane asked concerned over her best friend.
Mauras eyes were filled with tears as she shook her head and stepped away from the door, took a seat at the kitchen island.
"Where's Ian?"
"He's gone."
Jane limped her way to the kitchen.
"I protected a fugitive. Go ahead and arrest me."
"I'm sorry Maur."
"Because you won't be able to arrest him?" Mauras cheeks were wet of tears by now.
"Man you got it bad," Jane answered, handing the ME a napkin to wipe her tears off.
"You know when people talk about the loves of their life...that's Ian."
"You've never ever mentioned him."
"Cause I tried to forget him."
"I'm sorry Maura. I shouldn't have done what I did. It's, it's none of my business."
"I just. I cant.. I can't talk about him. I can't, with anybody, because it makes me so sad. How can you.. how can you love someone and not be able to be with them?"
"Why can't you be with him?"
"Cause he went back to Africa."
"You could go to Africa."
Maura sighed, "you know, his crime is risking his life...too bring drugs and basic supplies to places at nobody cares about. And I helped him so, go ahead and arrest me."
The brunette chuckled while she accidentally threw a look at the ME's kitchen cupboards. "The first person I'm going to arrest is my mother. What? Really? Highball glasses? When is the last time you had a highball?" She could see a smile on her best friends lips.
"She rehanged my closet too."
"No, not the closet."
"She threw away my shoeboxes," the our blonde almost cried.
"Oh no that is a crime. Sorry." Jane could see that her best friend really was in pain. "You want me to take you to the airport?"
"No. No." The doctor shook her head.
"You want me to sit with you until you feel better?"
"Yeah. But first, could you arrest your mother?"
"Yeah, okay." Jane chuckled, realising that Maura was laughing too. She grabbed the doctors hand to hug her. "Everything will be okay."
9th October
"Frankie come help, they're back from the hospital," Angela screamed as she opened the door to let Maura, who was jumping on one feet, supported by Jane and Tommy, in.
"Okay I got you," Frankie answered and took over for his sister. "I spoke to Korsak, they got Sensei Matta and his guys."
Tommy helped Maura to sit down on her couch as Jane handled her a cup of water.
"You sure you're okay?" Angela asked and threw a blanket over the doctors legs. But she didn't get an answer.
"Maura!" Jane shouted.
"Oh, yes, sorry," Maura said and swallowed hard.
"Are you sure you're okay? You seem a little distant," the older woman asked again.
"Yes, I'm just tired, I promise," Maura said and gave her a friendly smile. "My surgeon was very impressed with Janes incision," she tried, to change the subject.
"I've always wanted a doctor in the family," Angela chuckled.
"But too bad you got two cops and.." Jane threw a look at her youngest little brother.
"An undertaker," her other little brother answered.
"No, no, no. No, we're not doing that, ever again."
Angela laughed as she looked at her kids and said "I got three great kids."
"I think you got a doctor too," her daughter told her and took a seat next to Maura.
"Thanks..and thank you for saving my life, Jane." Her eyes filled with tears by now.
"I think you two should apologise to each other," the words definitely came from the mother in the room.
"But out!" Jane and Maura said in chorus. Angela rolled her eyes.
"I'm sorry if you are," the blonde smiled at her best friend.
"Okay, but I'm less sorry. We were both jerks."
"You were both assholes."
"Ma! Watch your language," Tommy shouted.
"I've missed you."
"I've missed you too," the brunette answered and hugged her best friend. They were both crying. "You want me to stay with you tonight?"
"Yes I would really appreciate that."
"Finally she left," Jane said relieved as she slammed the door shut. She limped into the living room to find her best friend staring out the window and biting her nails.
"Maura?" She asked and took the doctors hands. "Ma's right, you're acting distant. And Dr. Maura Isles doesn't bite her nails. That's not hygienic. Tell me."
"Well...," Maura started and took a deep breath "..my doctor told me something today."
"Yeah he told you that you're best friend is a really good cutter," Jane laughed, but Maura didn't, she just gave the brunette a serious look. "Maura, what's wrong?" Jane started to be pretty concerned for her best friend.
"Well, he told me that I'm.."
"That your what?"
"That I'm...7 weeks pregnant," the ME said and started to cry.
"Omg Maura! Congratulations, that's amazing, or...why are you crying?" Jane asked as she hugged her.
"7 weeks Jane, 7 weeks."
At first Jane was really confused, but suddenly she understood why Maura was crying. "Ian." she said with a sigh. Maura nodded when she stroke her wet cheek. "You know you have options."
"Of course I'm going to keep the baby, Jane. I've always wanted kids, but I didn't plan to do it alone. It's just overwhelming."
"And hormones," Jane chuckled, Maura nodded as she laughed and cried in the same time. "Hey, Maur. This is a good thing." She gestured to Mauras belly. "He or she is going to have the best mom in the world. And you're not alone, you have me, Ma, Frankie, Tommy, Frost and Korsak. You're never going to be alone. I will be here every step, I promise."
"Thank you Jane," Maura cried and hugged her best friend. She inhaled the smell of Janes dark curls. "Will you come to my doctor appointments? I have one in two weeks," she asked.
"Of course Maur. And I will hold your hair when you vomit and go shop maternity clothes and baby stuff with you. I really mean I will be here every step, I promise."
Maura smiled at the detective, she laid back in the couch and put a hand on her still flat stomach. "It just feels so unreal, I mean, I have another human growing inside my womb and I haven't even noticed it. I can't see a difference, I can't feel a difference."
"Well you will start feeling it soon, when you can't go into your autopsy room without getting nauseous," Jane laughed and put her hand on Mauras. "Everything is going to be fine."
