"Here we are babe. The brick-and-mortar establishment of my childhood. My house. I was born in this house."
Eddie gave him a sideways glance as they exited the Chevelle.
"Your mother gave birth to you in this house?"
Jamie shook his head no and gave a small laugh.
"No. But I did grow up in this house. There were always kids going in and out all the time. It was noisy."
Eddie swatted his chest playfully and took his hand as they went up the steps to the front door. Opening up the front door, Jamie could feel Eddie's hand shaking in his. She was nervous. Looking around, she carefully stepped into the house.
"I guess I feel so out of place. This is the commissioner's house after all."
Eddie watched as Jamie raised her arm and kissed her knuckles on her left hand.
"Relax babe. They are going to love you. Just follow my lead. Hey everybody! I'm here!"
Composing herself, she took a deep breath and stepped into the dining room with Jamie. She had just jumped into the deep end. Frank was just getting seated at the far end of the table opposite Henry when he saw the couple walk in.
"Officer Janko. This is a surprise."
Eddie felt slight heat come to her face, but she stood her ground. Jamie responded.
"I hope you don't mind me bringing her along dad."
Eddie let go of Jamie's hand and stood at attention.
"Sir."
Frank waved at her.
"You're off duty Officer Janko. None of that here. You can call me Frank."
Eddie felt she should remain professional. She was still in the commissioner's house after all. Setting up another place for Eddie, Jamie pulled the chair out for her and had her sit down. As everyone filled their plate and said the prayer, Jamie took this moment to speak.
"Well, aren't you guys going to ask me why all of a sudden I just bring a random girl to dinner?"
Now it was Henry's turn to put in his two cents.
"She's not just any girl. She's your girlfriend."
Linda stuffed a piece of Lasagna in her mouth and looked anywhere but at all the faces at the table. This alerted Danny that she was up to something.
"Linda, you know something don't you?"
Instead of looking straight at Danny, she made eye contact with Jamie.
"Maybe I do. Maybe I don't. It's not for me to say. Jamie is the one you need to ask."
Soon, everyone was digging into dessert when Jamie spoke up once more.
"Well pop, to answer your statement from earlier, Eddie isn't just my girlfriend."
Eddie put her fork down onto her plate.
"Jamie?"
Placing his napkin on the table and getting up, he pushed his chair back and got down on one knee, pulling a blue velvet box from his right pocket and opening it.
"Edit Marie Janko, will you do me the honor of marrying me?"
Eddie got that giddy schoolgirl feeling again, one she couldn't squash.
"On the following conditions. Here me out?"
Everyone at the table was on pins and needles waiting for Eddie's response.
"Always."
Eddie nodded and began reciting her vows.
"Uh I will always have your back."
Jamie then recited his vows.
"If you fall behind I'll wait up."
Eddie grinned and squeezed his hand.
"And pay you respect every day we have."
Jamie's smile grew more.
"I'll be your scout, your night watchman, your cavalry."
Eddie felt tears coming to her eyes as she recited her next vow.
"Your medic, your chaplain in our army of two."
Jamie kissed Eddie's knuckles and beamed.
"No retreat, no surrender."
Holding back her tears she repeated Jamie's words.
"No retreat, no surrender."
Jamie squeezed her hand one more time and kissed her knuckles again.
"You can count on me."
Eddie smiled through her tears.
"And you can count on me."
Everyone at the table sat silently for a few moments and let their vows sink in. Then Frank broke the ice.
"Welcome to our family, Eddie."
Eddie wiped away a few tears and smiled at him.
"Thank-you."
Again, it was silent for a few moments. Finally, Eddie added to her conversation.
"Dad."
Danny reached over across the table and shook hands with Jamie.
"Congratulations kid."
Jamie nodded and braced himself for what was coming next. Henry spoke up from the far end of the table.
"So, when are the two of you going to give me some more gg's?"
Jamie put the palm of his left hand over his face and shook his head. Eddie could see his face turning red.
"Pop!"
To Be Continued…
A/N: So, I promise from here on out the story will be happy. I won't be mean to Jamie and Eddie. Happy fics involving these two wonderful characters I love writing, but I feel that adding some drama is a nice mix of things.
