You Can Web Me Up Anytime
"Huh? Spooky Halloween Carnival Extravaganza?"
"Oooo Peter Peter Peter we HAVE to go!" MJ squealed next to him as they checked out the poster on the bulletin board.
"Uhhh sure. It sounds like fun."
"It will be fun! Just think about it, we could ride rollercoasters, play games. Maybe share a caramel apple or some cotton candy. Enjoy a ride on the Ferris wheel," she said hoping the list would a big enough hint for Peter.
"I mean yea. Sounds like your standard trip to the carnival. I think it'd be fun."
Frowning, MJ rolled her eyes at Peter's obliviousness.
"Well, if we're going," MJ continued, "we have to coordinate our costumes."
"Huh?"
"Didn't you read the poster, Peter? People in costumes get half-off the ticket prices. In other words, we HAVE to dress up."
"Ohhh I see. Well, what were you thinking of going as?"
"Peterrr! WE have to come up with something. Like a theme or a classic pairing. That way people will know we're together!"
"…..but if we're going together, won't people know that we're together?"
"…..You are so lucky you're cute."
"….I am!?"
Mary Jane felt like bashing her head into the wall. He could not be this dumb. He was the smartest person in school. There was absolutely no way he was this dense, especially since she caught him glancing at her with those longing eyes from time to time. He had to know she was practically BEGGING for a date…..right?
"Hi Petey! Are you thinking of going to the carnival?" Liz walked up with a cheery look on her face.
Mary Jane's excitement suddenly washed away as she sent a subtle glare towards the cheerleader. Lately Peter had been spending a lot of time with Liz tutoring her and helping her biology grade go up. They were even lab partners on multiple experiments! Sure, Peter still made time for Mary Jane as they walked to school together, did homework together, watch movies together. But something still gnawed at Mary Jane wondering just how Peter really felt. They were best friends but was that it? Although, she still was silently proud of the fact that she and Peter cuddled and slept together when she was sick. That was something Liz would never have.
"Heya Liz. Yea. It looks like fun. I was gonna take MJ," Peter answered honestly.
"Yup!" Mary Jane suddenly clutched Peter's arm tightly, "Peter and I are going in matching outfits. Isn't that right, Tiger?"
"Uhh yea haha. Though we haven't decided on a theme just yet."
"Eh that's ok. We've got plenty of time to brainstorm at HOME," MJ said making sure Liz clearly heard the word home.
"Home? What you two live together or something?" Liz asked.
"Well no. We're neighbors," Peter answered.
"But we spend so much time at each other's houses that we basically live together. Like he knows where the cups are in my cabinets. He's welcome to anything in my fridge at any time."
"I am?...OW" Peter asked before being elbowed in the side.
"Hmm well, I'm probably going as a sexy pirate. Kinda like Penelope Cruz. I guess I'll see you there. Later, Petey."
With a hair flip and a turn, Liz walked away. Gritting her teeth, Mary Jane grasped Peter's arm even tighter.
"MJ? You ok?"
"Huh? Yup. Just peachy. Hey, let's figure out some costume ideas at lunch, 'kay?"
"Buzz Lightyear and Woody?" Peter suggested.
"Hmm how about Woody and Jessie?"
"Ohhh I get it. You have red hair. Jessie has red hair. That's cute."
"Of course, it's cute. I have a reputation to maintain, Tiger."
"Oh wait…I don't have a cowboy hat. Do you?"
"Dammit! Uh ok let's keep thinking."
"Uhhhh Anakin and Padme?"
MJ leaned her head against her hand and began to gaze at Peter. She started imagining his hair grown out, a sharp smolder on his face, a scar running down his right eye, and his bare open chest. Unconsciously, she licked her lips.
"Uhhh MJ?"
"Huh?"
"You ok?"
"Uhh yea yea! I think Anakin and Padme would be a great combo!"
"Really?"
"I think so. You think you can find jedi tunic and a toy lightsaber by tonight?"
"Definitely! I'll just use the lightsaber my uncle got me a few years ago."
"Perfect. Don't you worry, I'll find the sexiest Padme outfit just for you," she winked.
"W-well I mean uh it might be cold out tonight. So, uh you should probably wear a jacket."
"Hnnn party pooper," she stuck her tongue out to tease, "Well now that we've got out outfits coordinated, you'd best not be late, Peter."
"Of course! I wouldn't want to miss this!"
"And even if you are late…be careful, ok?"
"MJ, I can assure you, I won't be late."
"Oh man I'm so late!" Peter groaned as he speed swung as fast as he could across the skyline, "Seriously who robs a bank with a gravity gun? Where did these guys even get a gravity gun?! Ugh so much to follow up on."
As he flipped over a bus and shot out another webline, his phone began to rang. Midair, he reached into his pocket and answered without looking at the caller ID.
"Hello?"
"Oh thank God you're ok!"
"Huh? MJ is that you?"
"Uhhh I mean, phew glad you picked up, Tiger. Haha. You ok?"
"Um yea yea I'm fine just running a tad late. Traffic is crazy right now."
"No worries. I'm out front in the purple hoodie. You were right, it is kinda cold."
"Told you haha," he laughed as he landed on a wall near the carnival.
"You got your costume?"
"I uhhhh….." (Stupid stupid Parker! The Anakin wig and jedi robes were sitting right on your bed! How could you forget!?)
Peter dropped down from the wall onto the street continually berating himself for leaving the costume at home. He plopped down to the street desperately trying to come up with an excuse to avoid upsetting Mary Jane.
"Well uh you see," Peter tried to buy time.
"Peter?"
Peter backed up and bumped into someone behind him. Turning around his eyes widened in horror seeing Mary Jane look back at him in her cute purple hoodie. She tilted her head in slight confusion before realizing that the Peter she was talking to on her phone was the Peter standing right in front of her. Panicking, he pulled off his mask and tried to smile desperately trying to find an out in this awkward solution.
"Uhhh hi MJ! I uh you see I uh well," he stuttered having no clue how to get out of this problem.
"Hey Parker! What do you think you're trying to prove!" a voice called out.
"Huh?"
A sight Peter never thought he'd see in his life came into view. Flash Thompson. Big buff star quarterback…..was wearing Midtown's cheerleading uniform. To top it all off, he actually had on makeup. Smokey eyes and red lipstick. He even had a blonde wig and some pom poms. Peter had to bite his lip to stifle a laugh despite Flash and his offensive line (in similar costumes) rapidly approaching him.
"Wow. I genuinely have no words, Flash," Peter greeted.
"You think you can pull off a Spider-Man costume? No way man! You're too short and definitely don't have the muscle mass. I'd be a much better Spider-Man!" Flash ranted.
"BAHAHHAHAHAHHHHAA."
Both guys looked over to see Mary Jane practically keeling over and cackling. She was almost crying with how much she was laughing. Flash and Peter looked at each other in confusion before MJ finally regained her composure.
"Ha ha ha. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. It's just, if I'm being honest, I kinda like Peter better in the suit," she explained.
"What?!" Flash exclaimed.
"Hehe yea. Honestly," she purred as she moved closer to Peter's torso resting a hand on his chest, "I think he fills out the suit quite nicely."
Peter blushed hard. Boy could MJ really sell it. She had grasped his torso and was tracing the spider emblem on his chest so agonizingly slowly. His heightened senses were going berserk. Goosebumps were appearing all over his skin under the suit. MJ knew exactly what she was doing and the effect she was having on Peter. Which was why she started to draw circles and trace his pectorals. Out in the open right in front of everybody!
"I think you look great, Petey! You can web me up anytime," Liz chimed in as she approached the group.
Peter suddenly felt a change in MJ's touch. She gripped his costume more almost balling up the fabric in her hands. Her body tensed up as she pulled him closer to her. It almost felt like she was being possessive of him. Not really sure what else to do, he rested his hand on the small of her back and glided his hand up and down to calm her. He smiled as she began relaxing under his touch.
"Uh hehe nice to see you too, Liz," Peter greeted hoping to thaw out the ice that suddenly formed.
"Like my costume?" Liz asked as she twirled to give everyone a full view.
"Sure um you look great," Peter answered.
"Hmm? I thought you and Mary Jane were coming as a pair? You're here in a Spider suit and she's well…"
Peter didn't even have to look to know MJ was smirking. He just knew that MJ had some sort of trump card to play and by God she was going to use it.
"Funny you should say that, Liz. I think Peter and I are matching perfectly."
Mary Jane unzipped her hoodie to reveal her costume: her very own Spider-suit. It matched Peter's perfectly with all the right reds and blues, a belt that wrapped around her hips nicely, a big black spider-emblem on her chest. She even had little bracelets that mimicked webshooters. From her pocket, she pulled out a little red domino mask and placed it on her eyes to complete the look.
"Whoa…" Flash and the entire o-line exclaimed.
Peter was too stunned to even say anything. She looked amazing, spectacular, ultimately incredible. Honestly, Peter could not turn away as his eyes kept tracing her curves that the skin-tight suit masterfully showcased.
"Tiger, you're drooling," she chuckled as she wiped a bit of spit from Peter's mouth with her thumb.
"OH I uh well," Peter quickly wiped his mouth after MJ pulled him out of his daze.
"Hehe I take it you like?"
"I- MJ. You look….You look stunning. Sexy even," Peter immediately covered his mouth after his Freudian slip.
On the outside, Mary Jane only raised her eyebrow and smirked. Inside, her heart was practically jumping out of her chest. He called her sexy! And he meant it! Peter meanwhile practically had steam coming out of his red ears. MJ grabbed his arm again wanting to both savor the moment and push Peter over the edge.
"If you like it so much, I'll send you pictures of me wearing it for your own….personal collection," MJ whispered in his ear.
"Ugh get a room you too!" Flash fake gagged.
All of a sudden, Peter froze. Quickly his eyes were darting left and right. He turned his head as if he was looking for something. MJ knew that look. It was not a good look. She had spent enough time with Peter to understand that he a sort of sixth sense when it came to danger. If Peter could sense it, danger was very very close.
"Hey, um Tiger?"
"Huh?"
"Would you be a dear and get some cotton candy? I'd really appreciate it," she nonchalantly (totally chalantly) asked.
"Uhh…..OHHHHH yea totally! I'll uh go to the stall right now!" Peter eagerly agreed picking up the exit she just handed him.
Hurriedly, Peter ran off in a supposedly random direction leaving the football team, MJ, and Liz. They didn't have to wait long though, as a bright yellow light sparked into the air. As the flash died down, a man in a bright green suit was floating. His hands and face were made up of pure energy, but his eyes, mouth, and fingers were still visible. All the lights around the stalls and streetlamps flickered as the floating energy man started drawing power from the area. Some of the light bulbs even exploded sending sparks everywhere.
*THWIP THWIP*
Almost out of nowhere, Spider-Man swung in and kicked the energy man right in the chest. The Wall-Crawler pushed off from the guy, flipped, and landing atop a streetlamp.
"Woohoo let's go Spidey!" Flash cheered.
"Get away! It's not safe," Spider-Man ordered.
Before he could react, Spidey was hit right in the face by an electric blast knocking him back.
"Spidey!" Flash cried out.
"C'mon Flash we gotta get out of here!" Liz shouted dragging him along.
Ignoring all the cries and panic, Mary Jane ran straight for where Spidey was flung. Stepping over the broken stalls and debris, she found him fortunately laying in a bed of plushies.
"Spider? Spider? You ok?" she nudged him.
"Oh boy. That'll wake you up in no time," he exclaimed.
"C'mon. Let's get you up," she said pulling him to stand.
"You shouldn't be here. It's not safe."
"SPIDER-MAN!" the electric guy called out, "You've meddled in my affairs for the last time! I just want to get better!"
"Then you need to stop Max! You have to stop drawing more power. If you do, your body will become pure energy and you won't be able to hold a humanoid form. You need to power down!"
"Liar! You and Connors are all the same. You're too scared of my power. You're too scared of ELECTRO!"
Electro drew even more power from the surrounding lamps and charged up a huge blast. Pointing his hands at Spidey and MJ, he let out a massive surge of electricity. With no time to even think, Spidey grabbed MJ and tried to swing out of the way. But the ensuing explosion knocked them off course and they landed in another nearby stall. Midair, he had turned so that he would take the brunt of the fall and she'd land on top of him. Holding her closely, he waited a second before checking on her.
"You ok?" Spidey asked.
"Yea. I'm fine."
"Ok good," he sighed in relief as he sat up, "You need to get out of here. It's not safe."
"Uhh Spider?"
"No don't Spider me. We're in a real situation here. And I can't fight the bad guy and keep an eye on you at the same time."
"Spiderrr!"
"No no! I can't have you get hurt, MJ…..If you got hurt or worse, I don't know what I'd…."
"SPIDER-MAN!"
"WHAT!?"
To his side, Mary Jane picked up a leaking water gun and pointed at it with her other hand. Spidey tilted his head and then looked around realizing his suit was slightly wet.
"Ohhhhh," he exclaimed finally picking up that they had landed on one of those water gun booths.
"Yup. That means there's a tank here somewhere. So, here's the plan."
"Whoa whoa whoa. The plan is you get out of here, I'll throw the tank of water at Sparky."
"Orrrr."
"…..You're not going to let this go are you?"
"Nope. I'll sit in your lap until Electro finds us and then roasts us alive unless you hear me out."
"SPIDER-MAN! WHERE ARE YOU!" Electro shouted.
"….Alright fine. What's the play, coach?"
Electro continued hovering around the fairgrounds looking left and right for that annoying webslinger. Lights continued flickering as he flew past them subconsciously drawing their energy.
"Hey! Looking for me you glorified nightlight!" Mary Jane called out at the top of her lungs.
"Run along, girl. I've got no business with you."
"Pft whatever. You can't beat Spider-Man anyway."
"Oh wait and see. I'll fry that little insect nice and crispy."
"For you information, spiders are arachnids. And he's way cooler than you are!"
"Knock it off, girl. You don't know who you're messing with!"
"Oh I absolutely do! Look at you. All you got are sparkly fingers. Sparky spark spark. What's so cool about that?"
"Quit yapping or I'll show you real power!" he snarled getting angrier by the second.
"Please. The best you can do is power my toaster oven. You don't even have a human body right now! You're not as cool or as strong as Spider-Man."
"Why I oughta!"
Angered and careless, Electro flew down towards Mary Jane who smartly ran in the other direction.
"Get back here! What? Can't face the music?" he yelled.
"No. I just needed you riiiight there," she grinned.
"Huh?"
"Now Spider!"
From behind the tarp, Spider-Man jumped high in the sky holding a giant tank of water above his head. Electro froze as if he was tethered and bolted to the ground. His jaw shook in fear realizing what was about to happen.
"Ah shit."
*SPLASH*
MJ hid behind another stall as Spidey dumped gallons upon gallons of water atop Electro. Some more sparks flew as Max screamed at the top of his lungs before passing out on the ground. As the water washed away, Spidey stood above a tired and defeated Max Dillion. His face was still energy-based but no sparks were flying out. Spidey leaned down and pushed a button on the suit which covered Max's face in a cowl.
"Sorry, Max. Looks like your plug's been pulled."
A little while later, MJ watched from her spot down the street as the police led Max into a high-tech transport van. She did feel a little bad for him as he just wanted to get better. Did he really have to go to prison?
"Mary Jane? Mary Jane!"
"Huh? Peter!"
Immediately, she ran up to hug him.
"You're ok! Why are you wet?" she pretended to ask.
"I uh well I went to get you some cotton candy," he explained holding up a giant bag of the sweets, "but I got knocked down by some debris from that Electro guy. I blacked out and next thing I know I'm laying in a puddle of water haha."
"Uh huh sure," she rolled her eyes at his latest lame excuse.
"Hey um, I'm sorry we weren't able to do all the fun carnival stuff like play games or ride the Ferris wheel."
"That's ok. It's not your fault. Sparky over there decided to ruin all the fun. But hey, you still got the cotton candy."
"Haha yea. You wanna head home and eat the whole bag?"
"Actually…can we find a bench nearby? I wanna sit under the moonlight for a bit."
"Oh uh. Ok!"
Walking not too far into the park, they found a nice quiet bench and began munching away at the cotton candy.
"Y'know I still don't get one thing," Peter asked.
"Hmm?"
"….How did you know I was going to show up in a Spider-Man outfit."
"Hehehe call it…a woman's intuition."
"Huh?"
*BANG BANG BANG*
Before Peter could ask any more questions, fireworks began shooting up into the sky. Bright displays of orange, yellow, and green burst into the night sky mesmerizing everyone below.
"Huh. I guess the staff wanted to give people at least a little bit of fun after what happened," Peter reasoned.
"Yea. That's nice of them," MJ agreed before leaning and resting her head on his shoulder.
They sat in comfortable silence as the fireworks began bursting in intricate patterns like candy corns and jack-o-lanterns. Mary Jane curled and cuddled closer to Peter trying to find warmth from his body. He wrapped his arm around her shoulder and held her closely.
"Beautiful," MJ commented on the fireworks.
Peter turned his head not looking at the fireworks, but as his best friend resting by his side.
"Yea…..beautiful."
