Peter was shocked to see John transform like this and so did the crowds around them; "Colonel Jameson... Did you become some sort of werewolf?" Peter asked feeling worried and terrified about this since he didn't know what was going on. John looked horrified as he looked at his now fur covered hands and felt his face.
"This wasn't supposed to happen... I was just supposed to get my powers back..." John muttered in shock and looked at his family in the crowd who were terrified at him with him looking down ashamed. "I was sick and tired of being mocked for the end of my career as Colonel Jupiter while the other superheroes get all the fame; I wanted to be looked up to again... I hired some thief to steal OZ from this criminal meeting..." John explained and Peter was silent realising that it must have been the events of the last night.
"You did what... How irresponsible..." Peter muttered but shook his head as John clearly needed help right now. "Deal with that later... Come quietly and I have something that could help make an antidote..." Peter told him softly going up to him thinking about his Fabricator when suddenly charging in surrounding them were armed officers of the Enhanced Crimes Task Force. "What are you doing? I am having this covered!" Peter snapped at them as they came in closer.
"Stand down or we will take you out now! Claws up in the air you freak!" snapped one of the officers as one sent out an electrified net and Peter dodged and John pushed the officers back as they were getting too close. They got up and were aiming at him again with J. Jonah Jameson rushing in through the crowd annoyed.
"John my boy; we will get you the help that you need!" Jameson said and then snapped at the officers as they were getting up and started firing at John. "Stop right there you idiot! That's my son a real hero; he has been on the Moon and Jupiter! Mayor Saks used to work right under me and I was the one who set up your department! I will make sure that you will have your desk cleaned out of!" Jameson snapped and Peter remembered that the Enhanced Crimes Task Force used to be the Anti-Vigilante Task Force that Jameson set up right after he became New York Mayor in Peter's first year as Spider-Man.
Was a long time since they gave him trouble and he certainly wasn't feeling nostalgiac for those times.
John roared as he snapped past the crowds and the officers followed causing him to lift up cars to throw at them with Peter web slinging to follow. "I thought that we were dealing with some bee guy; what is with the wolfman?" Liz asked floating down as Firestar as Peter sighed.
"Colonel Jameson barged in and ended up killing the bee guy I think when he turned into that wolf. Seems that he hired someone to steal OZ from that thing in Chinatown last night and put it in him. Thought he would have his powers back but..." Peter explained as Liz sighed about how things were never simple.
"Well we better focus on getting the people to safety" Liz told him and he nodded as they then went to work getting people to safety and telling them to get back as John attacked the Task Force officers getting near while roaring out at them to get back.
One child had gotten out of his mother's grip and ran to John; "Dad..." Neil muttered going near John as John was stunned to see his son going near him.
"Neil... Get back... I don't want you see me like this... Go find your mother and get to safety..." John roared out scaring Neil causing John to be taken aback; he found the Task Force officers coming up and he decided to lead them away by using his claws to scale up the building but they started shooting and it caused debris to start following.
One police officer nearby trying to clear the way of civilians noticed this and rushed in to push Neil out of the way getting caught by the debris himself. Peter noticed and went to check on Neil while the Task Force officers went to try and find where John would be heading.
"Are you alright kid?" Peter asked as Neil was silent and there was coughing from the debris. There was Mary Jane coming up to get Neil and lightly scold him for doing that when Peter pushed the debris out of the way. "Wait... No..." Peter muttered in shock as he realised it was the badly hurt Jefferson gasping for air.
"For what it's worth... You really grown on me Spider-Man... A real partner..." Jefferson got out as his eyes closed and his breath started with Peter trying in vain to try and get him breathing again. This was noticed by Miles and Phin who came up running with Miles yelling at his father to get up with tears in his eyes...
1 WEEK LATER
A large crowd dressed in black had their heads down at the cemetery for the funeral of Captain Jefferson Davis; the grieving Rio and Miles Morales there with friends and family there for support. The Mason and Lee families there for support with Phin and Ganke doing their best to comfort Miles. There was the Jameson family there for respect and at the back there was Aaron there dealing with the fact that his brother died without him being able to make amends with him and his family.
"Spider-Man wasn't fast enough and the space wolf is still out there... Needing to be caught so he can face justice for my father's dead..." Miles cried as Rio pulled him in as Phin and Ganke just watched.
Peter's apartment and he was watching news coverage with Liz, Debra & Grady; John was still at large as 'the Man-Wolf' as coined by someone on the scene who was livestreaming John's transformation and it stuck though it was lambasted by the Jamesons who were staying silent in regards to interviews. Even J. Jonah Jameson himself was staying silent and private besides meeting with his son's family so they can deal with it together.
"I could have noticed faster and got Neil out of the way so Captain Davis didn't have to... Maybe if I was quicker to restrain Colonel Jameson instead of trying to talk him down... Then it wouldn't..." muttered Peter feeling immense guilt over the tragic loss of his closest ally in the police department.
"Never apologise for for giving him a chance to back down and I was there too Peter; I could have reacted quicker myself..." Liz told him putting a hand on her boyfriend's shoulder to calm him down to try and make it so that he wouldn't shoulder the blame onto himself.
"Besides; that stupid Enhanced Crimes Task Force escalated the situation so if you ask me they should have the shoulder amount of blame!" Debra reminded them and knowing that and that they did the best they could at the moment didn't make it easier.
"No kidding and sometimes we just have to do the best that we can..." Grady said as the news showed a live press conference in front of City Hall where at a podium along with a group of people was Mayor Edward Saks a balding aged man in a suit. Behind the stage was a large tarp over something.
"The tragic death of Police Captain Jefferson Davis should not have happened and we may mourn his death but we must be steadfast in making sure that it doesn't happen again! We recognise all the good that Colonel John Jameson has done but alas he must be found to answer for his actions. With all respect to Spider-Man; last week's events has shown that it he and his partner Firestar are not enough. I will be adding more funding to the Enhanced Crimes Task Force as well as announcing new resources provided by a partnership with the Brand Corporation. I now turn you to their Chief Operating Officer Mr Herbert Landon!" Saks said as a man in a suit came up.
"Mayor Saks has given us approval to offer the Brand Corporation's biggest project to the resources of the Enhanced Crimes Task Force. Next time that an enhanced or out of the world menace goes onto the streets of our fair city; the new SS Mark VI shall be sent out!" Landon said as the tarp was let out and it showed large red and black coloured spider robots as this got the reporters talking.
"I am sure that the people will be thrilled to have City Hall backed spider robots sent out..." Liz muttered as she got over her surprise first out of the group but Peter wondered if they looked familiar. He thought back and remembered the Slayer robots from when he first met Logan.
"Wait... I remember those... Robots just like those tried to kill me and Wolverine in my first year! Liz; remember the story..." Peter explained as their eyes widened and they were now a little scared.
Debra got onto her phone searching something and gasped "well listen to this; Brand Corporation was set up years ago from the merger of several businesses including Trask Industries who were responsible for the Sentinels..."
"Feels like my first year where problem after problem came..." groaned Peter as Liz was open mouthed in horror as the Sentinels were pretty much required history topics for the Xavier Institute.
