Sam and Paul walked up to Leah's house. Sam was lost in thought, trying to figure out what he would say to Leah about his long absence. They had been planning their wedding and had gotten into a stupid fight about color schemes, of all things. He had no idea that would lead to him being a wolf lost in the woods for several weeks. It wasn't until Paul joined him that they figured out together what had happened to them and managed to phase back to human.

Sam sighed deeply and knocked on the door. He recognized Leah's cousin when she opened the door. As he opened his mouth to ask for Leah, Emily raised her eyes to his and the cables were bound. He knew he had to protect her. What was this?

Paul punched him on the arm and asked what was wrong with him. As Sam turned to answer, Leah came up behind Emily, looking them both over. She was furious. As she looked at Paul, however, he felt the same binding. His fury matched her own. They had never gotten along, and now he was bound to her? To Sam's girl? She didn't even smell right! His wolf was angry as well, and Sam didn't seem to be doing much better. Both men turned without a word and stalked away.

The council was troubled. Harry had seen Sam Uley and Paul Lahote storming away from the Clearwater house, and he knew. The wolves had returned. They made plans to meet with the new pack the following day, to explain the legends, including imprinting. Harry didn't want his daughter getting hurt if Sam didn't imprint on her.

Several months later:

The pack sat around Sam's living room, stunned. They had just gotten back from Embry's 'welcome to the pack' cliff diving, where he had imprinted on Bella. From across the water. They didn't even know it could happen at that distance.

Emily sat looking at her hands in her lap, unable to look at the group around her. Sam sat next to her, looking as lost as she was. They had been attempting to get to know each other, but she knew her heart would stay with Embry, who she had been down to visit from Neah Bay. She never should have stopped in to see her cousin Leah.

Paul and Leah sat several feet apart, both glowering at the floor. They had been blatantly ignoring each other since they had imprinted.

Only Jared and Kim seemed to think this was a positive, both hoping they were not the only ones to find happiness in the imprint. Judging by the faces around them, it wasn't looking good.

Paul was running. He had just single-handedly finished off the dreaded tick, and he was flying high. As he ran, he caught a scent, and his wolf took over completely. MINE, it said. Paul was confused. Hadn't he already been stuck with an imprint he didn't want? But even he had to admit, this scent was scintillating. He shifted back to human form, leaving the wolf in control. As he stalked into a clearing, he saw little Bella Swan. She looked up and locked eyes with him. Paul knew this was his packmates imprint, and yet he could do nothing to stop this. His wolf led him to be right in front of her, picking her up and wrapping her legs around his waist. He pinned her to a large tree, hands over her head.

"I've got you now, little girl," his wolf growled out from deep in his chest.

Bella could only nod, turning her head to the side to show her submission.
