Dylan knew something was wrong when he arrived home from work and Sam's work shoes were already stood by the door, she was never home before him- they always worked the same shifts lately so they would usually arrive home together unless of course she was riding that death trap of a motorcycle of hers. "Sam? Are you home?" He called out and then rolled his eyes of course she was home if her shoes were there?

"I'm upstairs Grumpy, can you come up here a minute I need to tell you something" She called back, her voice thick with emotion so it was obvious she had been crying.

"You're pregnant" He stammered staring at the two tiny blue lines on the stick Sam held out before her.

"We're pregnant Grumpy" She corrected him her joy obvious on her face.

"I. What...I. How" He stammered again barely concealing his shock.

"You're the doctor here I thought you would already know that one" She teased. "When a Mummy and a Daddy love each other very much..." She began, her grin stretching from ear to ear.

"Thank you very much for that Samantha" He muttered dryly.

"Are you happy?" She looked up at him, the pallor of his face making his cute ginger hair even more evident.

"Am I happy? Of course, I am Sam we're going to be parents." He pulled her into his arms, the height difference meaning her head rested against his chest, the place she often sought comfort from, the place where she could hear his heartbeat to reassure her that everything was fine. He pressed a kiss to the top of her head softly.

"We're going to be parents Grumpy" She grinned up at him and he frowned at the use of the pet name she appeared to be so fond of and yet he hated so much.

"So, when are you and Sam going to come and visit us, Dylan?" It was later that week and Sam was curled up in the armchair watching Say Yes to The Dress after a long day of tests to see how far along she was, and Dylan was standing out on the deck of their houseboat talking to his closest friend Zoe who lived in Michigan with her husband Nick.

"In about 14 months or so." He said offhandedly waiting for her to make the connection.

"14 months... Dylan's that is specific. What on earth could be so important that you can't possibly get a flight out here for almost a year and a half?" She demanded.

"Nothing much, just a pregnancy and a small baby" He grinned as Zoe emitted an ear-splitting shriek.

"Sam's pregnant! That's amazing Dylan I bet you're over the moon" Dylan could practically hear the excitement in her voice- Her and Nick had never been able to have children of their own so Zoe had been looking forward to the day when her best friend decided to have a baby.

"Of course, I am" He trailed off at the end of his sentence and quickly took a peep indoors to make sure Sam was out of earshot "I'm just worried I won't be a good dad to the baby."

It was the early hours of Saturday Morning when Sam was rudely awoken from sleep by Dervla who was leaping about barking "Shh Girl" Sam reached down and scratched between her ears. Soon she realized why Dervla was barking, the house phone on the landing leading to the master bedroom was ringing loudly, she reluctantly got out of bed to investigate. She lifted the receiver from the wall and frowned at the unknown number.

"Hello, Samantha Keogh speaking how may I help you?" She spoke as cheerfully as someone who had been dragged from the depths of sleep at 6am could muster.

"Sam Hi there its Nick" The voice on the other end spoke and Sam relaxed a little

"Nick, it's 6am here why on earth are you even ringing here at this time when you don't live here anymore, it's got to be 1am there" She yawned down the phone accidentally and her face flooded with heat.

"Sam, I've just woken you, up, haven't I?" He chuckled.

"How did you work that one out" She snapped unintentionally and then apologized "I'm sorry that came out wrong."

"Sam stop apologising. If anyone should be apologising, then it is me for waking you up. Anyway, I just wanted to warn you that Zoe has every intention of making her way over to England to spoil your offspring rotten" She could hear the disbelief in his voice, and she laughed quietly to herself.

"I'll make sure to warn everyone in the area then. Zoes not exactly shy about making herself heard is she now" Sam laughed and stifled another yawn.

"I just thought that I ought to warn you beforehand. I'll let you get back to bed now oh- and congratulations on the pregnancy Sam" He disconnected the call, and the line went dead.
