Jamie and Kara sat down on his couch, both lost in thought.

"Pregnant," Jamie finally said.

Kara exhaled the whirlwind, looking straight ahead at the TV, which was now turned off. "Yep."

Now it was Jamie's turn to exhale the whirlwind. "Wow."

"Are you… Are you mad?" Kara inquired cautiously, turning to look at him.

Jamie looked right back at her as he said, "Mad? Absolutely not. This is great news. I just, I just wasn't expecting this."

"Well, if it makes you feel better," Kara said with a half-smile, "neither was I."

"Are you okay?" Jamie asked. "Is the baby okay? When do you have to go to the next appointment? Because I'm going with you. And what about – "

"Easy, there," Kara chided gently. "Don't have a panic attack. Aside from the morning sickness, which is the worst misnomer of all time, I'm doing okay. The baby is doing great, healthy in every way. I have to actually see my doctor next week and I'd love for you to come with me."

Jamie blushed, shaking his head as a self-reprimand. "Sorry. I just want to make sure you're really okay."

"I am," Kara assured him. "I'm sorry, too. I know this is a lot and I thought about waiting until tomorrow, but I was afraid I'd be a nervous wreck. So I came over soon as my shift ended."

"You told the Sarge, right? Because, now, you must be on desk duty."

"Yes, Officer Reagan," Kara sighed as she playfully rolled her eyes. "I told the Sarge as soon as I got to work and, true to form, he put me on desk duty."

"Wow," Jaime sighed. "Pregnant."

"Yep."

"I guess there's only one thing left to do," Jamie said. He took her hands into his and got down on one knee.

Kara gasped. "No!" she exclaimed. "No, Jamie, not like this! I don't want you to marry me just because – "

"It's not about that," he assured her, looking into her eyes so deeply, Kara felt like he could see into her soul. "It's about love. A love we both thought we could never find. A love that created life." He placed his hand on Kara's stomach. "If anything," Jamie continued, "this proves we're meant to be together. So, Kara Walsh… Will you marry me?"

After seconds passing like minutes, and trying to choke back the tears, Kara whispered, "Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!" It was too late, though, as the dam burst the happy tears flowed.

"Good," Jamie joked. "Because my knee was starting to hurt."

Kara burst into laughter. "Get up here, old man." They kissed passionately for a few seconds, then Kara pulled away.

"What will your family say?"

Before he could answer, she said, "Oh crap. What will your dad say?"

"Well," Jamie said, "you've met all of them, you've come to family dinner with me and they all know about us and how serious we are. The pregnancy might be a shock, but they'll support us. They love you."

"I just…" Kara said hesitantly. "I just don't want anyone thinking…" She then drifted, staring off at the TV once more.

"Thinking what?" Jamie prodded.

"Thinking that I slept with the Commisioner's son so I could get pregnant and he'd have to marry me and – boom – I'm a Reagan. Instant access."

"Kara, look at me," Jamie said firmly.

Kara looked at her fiancée.

"No one," Jamie said with conviction, "and I mean no one in my family would ever think that. And anyone at the 1-2 or the rest of the NYPD who thinks that can tell that to my face. And I'll set them straight."

A tear escaped Kara's eye. "I know," she said. "I'm sorry, it's just the hormones messing with me and making me think stuff I shouldn't be thinking."

"And at the risk of sounding over-eager," Jamie said, "I don't want to wait. I think we should get married as soon as possible. Let's go to the courthouse tomorrow and file the paperwork."

"I agree," Kara said. "We've been practically married for the past year, anyway. I've been either staying here or you stay the night at my place. Let's make it official and file first thing tomorrow."

They sealed their agreement with another tender kiss. After their lips parted, Kara let out a loud yawn, much to Jamie's amusement.

"My kisses are that exciting, huh?" he asked.

"Well," Kara said playfully, "I did spend a double shift answering phones all day while a little person is growing inside of me. So excuuuusse me, lover, if I'm just a wee bit tired."

"Lover?" Jamie said feigning shock. "I thought I was your fiancée?"

"Well, fiancée, can I please stay here for the night? I'm really wiped out."

"No problem. Lover."

Kara rolled her eyes and playfully smacked his chest.

As Kara walked to Jamie's bedroom to get ready for bed, Jamie sat on the couch and smiled.

I'm going to be a dad, he thought to himself, and I'm going to be a husband!

A beat passed.

Welcome to real manhood, Mr. Reagan.
