Dr. Merriweather ran farther up the path. Darius had a hard time keeping up with the older man. He was taller and more experienced than himself. The rain pounded down all around them. Thunder clouds roared up above them with anger. As Merriweather ran the mud splattered across his legs, hiking boots and socks. Bits of debris clung onto him. Despite this the doctor never slowed or showed signs of weakness. Darius grimaced as he recalled the monster that had been behind them. For the beast could have been anywhere now. Dr. Merriweather came to an abrupt stop gesturing for Darius to do the same. He crouched and lurched forward.
"Look-" Muttered the doctor. He pointed his finger out into the darkness. Beyond the trees Darius recognized movement behind bushes that rattled together before falling still. Of course it could have been the wind howling around them but both he and the doctor knew better than to be fooled.
"Raptors…" Darius hissed under his breath. With gleaming eyes he followed the faint movement. He had come to the conclusion they had to be raptors because of the sway of the plants and the near invisibility of the dinosaur. Then his theory was confirmed. A six inch sickle claw came into viewing for only a split second.
"Come on…" Merriweather insisted. "We can't waste time here. We have to get to the helicopter."
Darius nodded slowly following Merriweather into the black of the night. They creeped along while Darius kept throwing his head back. Under normal circumstances he would have come up with a plan but something else wanted to rip them apart and they were running out of time.
"Look." The doctor said, In front of them they could see the helicopter lower itself to the ground. Its blades swing in a consistent chopping motion. The silver flashing with alluring rain. He considered throwing his hands up to cover his ears but did not do such. The velociraptor darted out and ran the other way. It was followed by several others. He sighed in relief for only a moment. For a much more dangerous threat would arrive soon. Darius and Dr. Merriweather shuffled through a pile of bones.
"Come on!" Clayton waved. Darius began to sprint.
As Clayton Merriweather drew near the earth below them shuddered. An ear shattering screech filled the night. Its deep roar sounded similar to an air compressor with a much deeper pitch. Teeth flashed and obscured his view. He fell backwards with a thud. The Tyrannosaurus rex dove forward, ripping Clayton from the helicopter. His mighty jaws shredded the landing made of steel.
The man screamed but it was cut off swiftly as he was bit into two pieces. His legs came crashing down into the mud with a grotesque crack. The rex swallowed his first half while the man's guts slipped loose of his grasp. His innards fell onto a sharp rock. They slipped down the side of the boulder. Darius fell to his haunches pulling himself away from the blood thirsty dinosaur.
He would not be able to reach the helicopter. The trex stumbled forward. He lowered his sturdy head. He proceeded to consider feasting on what had not quite made it into his belly. Rather his amber eyes quivered landing upon Darius. The boy squirmed, turning around. In one swift motion he got up and began to sprint. It hardly gave the rex any trouble. All he did was crane his slimy neck forward and pluck Darius up. The world became jammed with sudden shrieks and the unforgettable heavy breathing of the animal. Then the rex chomped down.
"Game over" the console echoed. The screen turned bloody and the words appeared in bold. Game over. Too familiar he thought to himself.
"Ugh!" Darius yanked the v.r headset off, pushing it onto his desk. Pieces of paper fluttered to his floor.
The 13 year old slumped backwards into his chair. Defeated. Darius groaned in frustration resting his head in his hands. His eyes stung with potential tears that threatened to spill over. He'd lost again. Darius took a deep breath and sat up. He ran the back of his hand under his eye wiping his tears away. For a long moment he just sat in the dark or his room in silence.
He was so tired. Tired of it all. At one point he had thought he had discovered his big break. But the young boy found himself locked in his room every night trying to crack the code to the new Jurassic World game. Nothing he did seemed to could have sworn the words game over had burned his brain.
He had tried taking other routes. He had tried distracting the rex. He even tried throwing objects! He had tried hiding in the woods. He had tried climbing a tree. He even tried standing right infront of the rex to trick it. He had tried. But trying never seemed to be enough. His dreams were always one step ahead. Just barely out of reach. Darius sat up and began a brainstorm.
Structurally the rex had twig-like arms, built with a massive head, a massive snout, razor teeth, weighing in at about 14 tons. The tyrannosaurus rex lived during the cretaceous period. Its name means 'tyrant lizard king' and it had a long life span. Despite all of his knowledge nothing seemed to help him in his quest to beat the video game and go to Jurassic World's new adventure camp. He picked up his fallen papers and sat back up.
Something breathed down his neck. Darius whipped around faster than lighting. "RAWR!" His brother howled.
"GAH!" He yelped. Darius pushed away. His chair lifted off the floor and slipped from underneath him. Suddenly he came crashing down onto his cold bedroom floor. Stunned, he sat there for a split second while Brandon barked a storm of laughter.
"You should have seen your face!" He cried out. His face became a tad pink as he began to titter again. Brandon then composed himself and offered his hand to his little brother. He declined. He brought his chair back with him.
"Not cool, brand" Darius scowled. Brandon gave a sheepish smile.
"Aww, c'mon man!" Brand ruffled his brother's fluffy hair while glancing at the monitor's screen. The older boy took into account weeping words on the screen. "The dino's get you everytime." He insisted.
Darius rolled his eyes and proceeded to push his rolly chair to the other side of the desk. There lies the owner's manual of the game. Maybe the answer would lie inside the pamphlet. "Not cool, Brand. Not cool." He growled. Brandon gave his award winning smile and flopped backward onto Darius's bed. Two plush dinosaurs sat next to him. He scooped them up. Holding the t rex up he said.
"Kiss me you fool!" Brandon proceeded to make the dinosaurs kiss. He glanced up at his little brother. Darius ignored him and his obnoxious antics.
"Brand! I'm soooo close! If I could just get around the Trex, I beat the game and win the-"
Brandon sat up swifty. He dropped the rex and hurled the second stuffed animal off the side of the bed. The plush thumped dully on the carpet. "Trip to Jurassic World. I know, you've told me like, a thousand times!" He rolled his eyes and groaned. "Everyone says this game is unwinnable! How's my dino-nerd baby brother supposed to win it!?" He took the rex and threw it at Darius. It hit him roughly in the chest. Darius looked at the floor and absently brushed the plush off.
"Love the encouragement. That one gives you bonus points." Darius grumbled, turning back to the manual. "I better start saving to give you the brother of the year award-"
"Darius- that's not what I meant." Brandon watched with regret. He began to empathize with him. "I know getting to Jurassic world was yours and Dad's dream. But there's more to life than dinosaurs and video games. You never leave your room anymore… BRUH…" He held out an accent during the word BRUH. "Dad wouldn't have wanted this."
Darius paused. His hand hovering just above his computer mouse. Anger bubbled up deep inside of him. How do you know what dad would have wanted…He thought. He took a deep breath.
"Look, I hear you." He began. "But even if winning is dumb and hopeless. I still have to try… It's the principle."
Brandon grumbled but he too became reasonable and empathetic. "Can ya at least take a break? From all of this?" He waved his arms around. "Maybe work in a shower? You and your room are starting to smell pretty funky."
He laughed at this. His brother was not wrong. As a teen boy working away at a game he did smell a tad off. Maybe a warm shower would be enough to clear his head. Maybe that's all he needed. Brandon got up and left the room. As soon as he left Darius gripped tightly to his raptor claw necklace. He missed his dad.
Brandon had not been wrong. The cool water had brought Darius some kind of peace. For a moment his wild emotions and desire seemed to sink. He got out, brushed his teeth, got dressed and moved from the bathroom back to his room. His mind was calm as he began to reconsider what he was going to try next. Despite the frustration from earlier he came back relaxed and prepared for round 601.
When he walked back into his room the property gave a good look at his novels. Maybe instead of working on beating the game he could wind down and read a book. Darius could get back to being himself. Maybe plan to go hang out with his Cousin Dallas. He read the titles. Dr. Ellie Sattler's Botany of the Late Cretacous and Dr. Ian Malcom's God Creates Dinosaurs. He spotted one of his favorites among the other novels. It was a biography made by the one and only famous Dr. Alan Grant. It covered his research and his personal time stuck on Jurassic Park's island. He had been the man to survive the unimaginable. He had mentioned topics such as attack patterns…Suddenly something crossed his mind…
"Attack patterns…" He mumbled. He picked up his books and skimmed through the pages like a wild ravenous animal. "It's got to be here… Vocalization… pack behavior… feeding habits…" Then he stopped dead. "That's it!" Quickly he rushed back to his desk with Alan Grant's The Lost World of The Dinosaurs. He booted up his console. He knew what he had to do. The screen read, Restart from waypoint.
The game landed him right at the point where the helicopter had landed. Darius wasted no time. His avatar sprinted onward. He didn't bother with the blue green velociraptors who screeched in fright diving for cover. He dove down the rocky path towards the bones he had clambered through. His answer.
"Where are you? Where are you…" He frantically called. His hands feverishly searched through the heap of bones.
Then he noticed the slim and narrow skull. These weren't just any bones. These were raptor bones. The t rex came stumbling out of the dark. It's head swaying one way then the other. His gaze fell upon Darius. The boy fumbled quicker while the doctor spirited away. He removed the piece of bone he needed. The skull cracked away from the small piece. It was small but it was what he had needed. The screen lit up. Activate raptor skull. He had found it. Quickly he clicked E on his keyboard.
"Please whistle…" He would be dead again soon. His headphones let out a sharp chirp. It was a raptor call.
The raptors arrived a moment later diving from the bush's into the clearing. His heart fluttered with hope. He had done it. One of them hissed while another chirped. With flashing teeth and sickle claws raised they attacked at the rex ferociously. Blue, orange and green blazed past him. Darius didn't waste another second. He clambered past the rex's foot and towards the chopper where Merriweather stood screaming.
"Come on!" The doctor holard. "Hurry!" Darius joined him inside the Helicopter lifting it's way into a dawning sky. He had done it? He must have. A series of end credits began to play. Darius held his breath. Suddenly the gates of Jurassic World appeared. They swung open wide…
"Congratulations player!" Mr. Dna stated. The dna strand danced across the screen. "I'm Mr. DNA and you're the first person to ever beat our game!" The cartoon character explained. "So we wanna reward you-with a trip to Jurassic World's brand-new, state-of-the-art adventure camp! That's right! Get ready to join us at Camp Cretaceous!" He didn't move a muscle afraid the cartoon character would disappear.
"MOMMMMM….. BRAND!" He yelled. He had finally done the impossible.
Darius watched with eager hungry eyes as they approached the nearing dock. He rocked on his tippy toes and backed down again with excitement. The Island was huge with tall trees ripping at the blazing blue sky. Next to him a girl with long brown hair and a track suit watched with the same hunger. Not too far off a boy with sandy brown hair gripped his stomach with white knuckles. Darius tried to ignore him. For this was his special moment. As they grew near he swiftly moved off of the ferry. A man with brown eyes, a pink shirt and headband greeted him.
"Welcome to Isla Nublar!"
