It was late at night, and Michael had only just gotten home from wrapping up his latest case. He walked through the quiet, darkened halls of the Foundation mansion to the one lighted area: Devon's office. Devon was at his desk, using only the desk lamp for illumination. He was wearing a suit, though no suit jacket.
"Yo, Devon," said Michael from the doorway.
Devon looked up from his paperwork, He silently put one finger over his lips and then, equally silently, pointed to the sofa. Michael looked over into the gloom. Melissa was curled up on the sofa, asleep with Devon's suit jacket draped over her as a blanket.
Michael walked over to the desk and asked Devon quietly, "How's she holding up?"
"About as well as you would think," Devon sighed. "Given the circumstances."
Michael echoed that sigh. "You have much more to do?"
Devon looked at the folders on his desk. "Two hours. Maybe three. I doubt I'll get any work done tomorrow, so I am trying to get through what I need to tonight."
"I'll take care of Melissa; you take care of the paperwork."
And with that, Michael walked over to the sofa. He gently picked up Melissa, cradling her in his arms with her head against his chest. She stirred slightly. He waited until he was sure she had settled back down, then left Devon's office walking slowly to avoid disturbing her much-needed sleep.
Devon continued with his work. He finally finished and checked the clock. It had only been an hour. He had obviously been more distracted by Melissa's presence – and Michael's absence – than he had realized.
"Kitt?"
"Yes, Devon?"
"Do you know where Michael and Melissa are?"
In response, Kitt turned on his video feed. His front seats were reclined almost fully. Michael was asleep in the driver's seat, facing forward. Melissa was sleeping curled up on the passenger seat. Devon's suit jacket was still draped over her.
"Michael isn't snoring," Devon observed with a fond smile.
"I have adjusted his seat to the optimal angle for his comfort. And silence." Kitt paused, and then asked, "Will you be joining us, Devon?"
"No, Kitt. I am of an age where I prefer my own bed."
"Michael asked to be woken up at 7:30. That is enough time to shower and dress so we can leave at 8:15 to be at the courthouse shortly after 9:00."
"He made no allowance for breakfast?"
"Michael didn't believe anyone would be able to eat."
Devon replied soberly, "No, I suppose not. I will join everyone at 8:15, then."
"Sleep well, Devon."
"We shall see, Kitt. We shall see."
