With a held breath, Tokiomi was ready.
Inside the Tohsaka manor, protected by various wards and a bounded field, Tokiomi had at last finished the preparations for the upcoming day he awaited. The Holy Grail War.
Evidenced by the three Command Seals as proof of his participation, and the glory of witnessing the summoning ritual in full effect. Having already finished his chant, not all that awaited was waiting for him. The one Tokiomi called upon.
By the desktop is an old fossil from the Age of Gods.
It wasn't some magical artifact of course. Oh, no. It was just a fossil, no different from the ancient dinosaurs in fact. But those who lived in his world, beneath the moonlight, Tokiomi knew otherwise.
'The great King of Heroes.' Tokiomi couldn't help but smile softly. His mood elated at what was to come.
Even though it only took but a minute for the summoning to be complete, Tokiomi couldn't help but feel time come to crawl. As if seconds had become hours. His mind raced to how it all began, and the possibilities that were to come. The anticipation, the honor. At long last Tokiomi was going to fulfill the dream that his family desired. The completion of the Heaven's Feel.
With it the Swirl of the Root can be attained. Tokiomi had spent a long time preparing for this day, cultivating his body and soul for when he participated. Granted, by no means did this mean victory was assured, but Tokiomi liked to think otherwise.
And why wouldn't he?
This wasn't arrogance in the least. In reality, this was a fact. Years of devoting himself to his magecraft, attaining a high-rank within the Clock Tower. Being the Second Owner of Fuyuki itself.
And while it took months to locate and find the catalyst, said catlyst could summon the greatest hero of them all,
Constant practice and finesse to ensure not a single breach could be found within his bounded fields.
That wasn't even mentioning the backing he had from the very Church itself, with his own apprentice, Kirei, aiding him with his own Servant.
One could say Tokiomi was the most likely to win in this Holy Grail War itself. A look at all he had with him backed it up.
'Still,' Tokiomi thought as he knelt. 'That doesn't mean I can't be too careful.'
Already Tokiomi's sources have told him of some of the participants coming.
Such as the famed El Melloi, Kayneth, being an accomplished magus and likely Tokiomi's greatest rival in this war. That wasn't even mentioning the expected Matou's and Einzberns, though, from what Tokiomi learned, the latter may not be a problem. The Einzberns reduced to using a mercenary, while the latter were worse off due to lacking any actual magus. It was a shame, but it seems the family is already declining with but a scant few that could even use magecraft.
Well…except for a recent one.
'No time for thinking about the past.' Tokiomi told himself. 'Focus on the present.' Where in the future, if he played his cards right, Tokiomi would win. Accomplishing what he set out to do, ensuring his lineage's victory, and leaving Rin with a set future. Ah, Rin. Such a fine girl and magus she would be.
Maybe it was a little reprobate to admit, but Tokiomi truly wished his daughter to live a good life as she grew into a beautiful young lady. For now, she was staying with her mother, with Tokiomi trusting his wife to keep an eye on her. Not that it would be easy. Tokiomi knew how rambunctious Rin could get at times.
Time then seemed to move forward again. A body was materializing within the light. Pushing aside all thoughts, Tokiomi focused on being ready. Knowing he must show sublime to he who was the first hero.
As Tokiomi awaited the king's presence, he then felt something off for just the smallest of seconds. His body momentarily shaking as if he was in the presence of not a man, but a beast.
The light then receded, revealing-
For the first time in many years, when she should have entered eternal sleep, a pair of blue eyes opened up. The feel of stale air, mystic energy permuting the area, the sounds of the world around her being heard. A strange thing to feel, since she was supposed to be dead.
'Where…am I?' are the words left unsaid. This was unnatural. Strange even. The girl knew her time had come, as she had closed her eyes for one last time, while surrounded by those she deemed friends and even family. Her successor, her daughter, held her hand along with her husband as they watched her off.
Then she heard a call.
She didn't know how, but the young maiden heard a call from somewhere. Where she then reached out for it and...
Here she is now.
Seeing. Breathing. Feeling. Hearing.
She was...alive?
"What is…this?" With the sound of a voice being heard. One that seems to be confused, if she got the tone right. Wanting answers, the young girl then turned, her long silver-white hair flowing as she then spotted someone inside this…room, was it?
Low lighting, shelves full of various items and assortments, papers, with a man kneeling right before her. Average height. A goatee. Wearing a rather strange outfit that she did not recognize other than the fact that it looked well made with fine material. A noble man? She never met many aside from the few who came to the sanctum.
Whoever he was, he's the only person here that could possibly answer the questions she had. She then opened her mouth to ask right away.
"You…are not Gilgamesh." Only for the man to beat her first, while giving a narrow stare at her. His hands gripping tightly on a staff with a jewel on top. She sensed a slight spike in mystic energy. "Who are you?"
It seems he was just as baffled as her in this situation. Still, he might be able to help her out. "I am but a simple maiden. A host." She gave a courteous bow, showing her manners. "And I attest, I know not why I am here. let aside…apologies if I confuse you, alive. As I should be dead." Her soul then reincarnated to join with the others before her.
"Dead?" The man tilted his head, taking in her words. Then, he seemed to realize something. "Ah…I see." As if figuring a problem out, he then said, "You must be my Servant."
He made it sound like it was a fact. He didn't stutter. He simply spoke as if what he said was true with no doubts to it.
Crk!
A small glass tube cracked ever slightly.
'Down.' Needless to say, Tokiomi's careless words got… 'her', rather upset. As a low growl could then be heard that only the maiden herself could hear. Sending her voice towards her other half, before things could potentially get messy, the priestess then decided to see if there was a misunderstanding in place. Because as a maiden to the great white dragon, she is nobody's servant. To neither the kings or even noble man like this one. To even state such a thing would have gotten many of the followers rather indignant.
"I believe there is a misunderstanding." She told the man before deciding to reveal herself. "My name is of no importance. However, I am in service of the dragon with blue eyes. By customs and tradition, I belong to no one but the legendary beast themselves."
She then saw the man narrow his eyes again, as if wondering something. He then shakes his head and raised his hand. There, the maiden then saw strange marks on the back of his hand…where she felt a connection to them. "Not according to these." Speaking in a cordial, yet knowing tone, the man said, "By this pledge, you are my Servant for this Holy Grail War."
It was then a cracking sound is heard, more audible this time. With Tokiomi then turning in confusion to see one of the glass containers on his shelves cracked.
"Gruagh!" All while the growl within the Maiden sounded far more enraged. Her left eye twitched as she felt 'her' disgruntled anger. Not that 'she' was alone, as the priestess felt herself growing the slightest bit irritated. Though before she could say anything, it was then she felt an essence enter her mind.
Nearly tripping herself, the priestess gripped her head as she then began receiving knowledge of sorts entering her own mind.
Then, words left her mouth before she even realized it. Saying, "Holy...Grail...War?"
Her eyes widened at this information.
"I see. Perhaps you just hadn't received the information most Servants get when summoned." It appeared the man knew more than he let on. As he continued on, saying, "By now, you should know what your purpose is. That is, to fight on my behalf, my fair lady, against the other rivals we face." With the knowledge bestowed to the maiden, the priestess now understands what the man meant. Because in an instant, the priestess knew everything that was going on with her situation.
That she has been called upon from this Throne of Heroes. Given 'life' once more, to participate in a battle that would either end in victory or death. She wasn't even alive in the proper sense. Just a figure of great historical reference that was called back to the land of the living thanks to the Holy Grail and the Masters that called upon them.
All to be in service to a mage and fight to the death on his behalf against others like her. Those who were also in the Throne of Heroes and summoned in this city, six others in fact. Killing each other and spilling blood for the right to have a chance to gain the great chalice, not the one used by Christ, but instead another chalice that granted a wish.
It was an interesting proposal, especially if offered to the right person.
"!?" Unfortunately for Tokiomi Tohsaka, Second Owner of the land, he had no idea just how much he insulted the priestess's other half. As no sooner had he finished speaking to the maiden, every glass bottle shattered with a great release of mana being felt, filling the room. "What in-!?"
"Down!" The priestess then came right in front of him, faster than even she expected, and shoved him to the ground. Covering him from what she knew would be an angry response.
WHISH!
And just in time, as a blue light emitted from her and left her body, soon taking the form of what appeared to be a giant ethereal creature shaped in the form of a lizard that filled the room. But this was no lizard, and certainly not a wraith as the priestess knew what this half-transparent being truly was. It was taking a lot of her effort to calm her and have her other half not to annihilate everything in a one mile radius. Thankfully, she managed to accomplish this.
Vvvzzzz!
But she couldn't stop the manifestation to raise its jaw upward, where in that moment a white spark could be seen coming to life.
"It's not fair." Came the grumbling of a small child, as she sat on a chair that was seated towards the nearest window. Her dark hair, normally styled in twin tails, now let loose. Wearing some pajamas as she stared out the window, as if waiting for something.
"Rin." Nearby, the voice of her mother came. The door opened as a young beautiful woman entered, having found her daughter at last. "Come now, it's time for bed." It was already past eight.
"But mom!" The small girl known as Rin whined. Her hands tapping on the table close to her. "Tonight's the night when dad starts!"
Rin's mother, Aoi Tohsaka, sighed. "Give me strength Lord."
Heaven knew how tough it was to raise a child. Especially on your own when the father is…absent, for the time being. Still, Tokiomi entrusted her with their daughter, and Aoi would do so no matter what. She was this girl's mother, and as such would reign her child in.
Thankfully, Aoi knew how. "If you don't go to bed, then I'll restrict any snacks for your lunch tomorrow."
"N-No!" Aoi couldn't help but smile at Rin's response. While a bit more mature than most children, Aoi's little jewel is still a child in the end. Rin got off the chair and began walking toward her. "O-Okay. I'll go to bed." Rin then paused, looking out the window. "...but…"
"I know Rin. I know." While Rin wouldn't admit it, Aoi could tell the girl was just a bit worried. Though not for herself of course, but for her father, Aoi's husband, at this time. "But I'm certain your father is doing fine."
"O-Of course he is!" Soon, any worry Rin may have had was replaced with a grin. "Father is a great mage! He's super cool and smart!" The best of the best. "There's no way he'll lose against those other mages!"
Aoi could only give a reassuring smile. "And he even has Kirei with him to help him out."
"...oh." Rin then muttered, crossing her arms. The smile she had earlier wiped from her face. "Right...him."
Aoi sighed. Rin never did like Kirei for some reason, in fact, she sometimes even got into arguments with him. But Kirei was a good person as far as Aoi could tell, backed by his kind father with great skills to aid Tokiomi. That wasn't to say she didn't believe in her husband's skills of course. He held a high rank in the Clock Tower, the Second-Owner of Fuyuki City, and wielded great strength and skill when it came to magecraft. That wasn't even mentioning how her husband, days before the great event he'd participated in, claimed he found a powerful catalyst.
'Yes. I'm sure he'll do just fine.' He only sent her and Rin away for their safety. Something that unfortunately made Rin just a bit upset, as she wanted to stay and help her father. But Aoi knew why they must leave their home.
Because anything was possible with the great Holy Grail War.
Yes, Aoi knew of the event. What her husband and his ally of the Church, Risei and his son, told her about.
A war that has been held for the past few centuries, all involving a great ritual that can make a wish into reality. Admittingly, Aoi didn't know all the details as she didn't ask for them, since she wouldn't be involved in the way, but she knew about the basics. Seven Masters, seven Servants. Heroic Spirits from across history, brought forth to life by the power of the Holy Grail. An artifact that all mages vied for.
One that would end in a bloodbath as in order to win it, one must kill the competition. A competition that Tokiomi is in.
'Even if I know how capable he is, I suppose I still pray for his safety.' It was foolish, really. Aoi is well aware of how much effort her husband has put into this war. The planning, the preparations, all of it. Having even the very Church itself as his ally, when normally they would be neutral in all of this.
The only one not as worried was Rin. Her precious little jewel, already believing Tokiomi has won. If only Aoi shared such optimism as her eldest daughter.
'Only daughter.' Then came the small, almost accusing voice from her mind. The image of another girl then coming to her thoughts, then just as quickly leaving.
"..." Deciding to push aside such thoughts, Aoi decided it'd be best to take Rin back to her room. A young girl like her, mage or not, needed her rest. She had school tomorrow and homework to do. Really, staying late would just make her dead-eyed in the morning. Something that Aoi noticed occurred with Tokiomi as he would at times be too engrossed with his studies to sleep properly and wake up tired.
Not wanting that for her daughter, Aoi grabbed Rin gently and took her to her room. It'd be best if she also got her sleep as well. That'd make one of them, as Aoi was certain that her husband was busy making plans for when the first fight of the Holy Grail War began.
"?" Then, briefly, Aoi swore she saw a blue flash coming out from her window.
Boom!
Followed by the sound of thunder itself where a blue beam came out of nowhere from far across her window. Aoi then flinched. Her own senses are actually capable of sensing the mass amount of mana just released, while she, and likely many others, saw this blue pillar of light coming from somewhere followed by what felt like a roar.
"What was that?" It seems Rin noticed as well, as she came back into the room, missing the blue pillar vanishing but having heard the loud noise. Not just Rin either. Outside, lights began turning on with a few people actually stepping outside to see what just happened.
"...I…go back to bed Rin." Aoi told her daughter as she rubbed her head. It seems the Holy Grail War has already begun if that light was any indication. A sign that it has now begun. And likely that not just her noticing this, but all of them. The remaining Masters alongside the Servants called by them. All of whom were chosen by the Holy Grail, giving each Master a legendary figure from across history. Directly summoned from the Throne of Heroes itself. Where they doubtlessly saw this pillar of light.
Now, the Fourth Holy Grail has begun upon Fuyuki City. Though unknown to all, this war would be just a little different with the Servants called upon.
A maiden who served the legendary white dragon.
A fragment of the thousand, derived from a barren galaxy.
A soldier that survived time and again, surviving against all manner of beasts and men.
A thing that held no ego, and mimicked the foe that it faced.
A slayer who lost sight of her goal, and driven mad against all dragons.
A girl with no self, only purpose towards her goal.
A woman of pure heart, yet holds items of mysterious reverence.
Now said legends will fight to see who will attain their wish for their Master, for the better or worse.
Fate, meet duel spirits.
If you read closely and know the game, some of these Servants will be easy to recognize. With Tokiomi getting one of the best ones…Until he ruined it. The scene you saw is the result of what happens when you pair a strict mage who sees a Servant as a tool with a prideful dragon.
Maybe the others will have a better time?
Anyway, enjoy, and here's the status sheet of Tokiomi's Servant. Until Next Time.
