AN:
I wish I had a better excuse for why this chapter took more time to finish than I anticipated, but I'm afraid it's just my laziness that got the better of me. I can only apologize for it.
Guest Review Replies:
To Jason: Yes, but that's about to change, isn't it?
To Guest: Unfortunately, I don't plan on making another reaction chapter; My version of Ash vs Cynthia doesn't diverge too much from the anime's version, so there wouldn't be anything interesting to react to. Moreover, I'm not the best when it comes to writing romance, nor do I particularly care for Ash x Iris; as such, I won't be doing that either. Sorry to disappoint you.
After picking him up, Ash walked back to his side of the battlefield and kneeled to set Pikachu down beside him. "You really gave it your all, Pikachu." He petted him. "Thanks a bunch."
Pikachu emitted some sorry-sounding cries.
Ash stood up, turning around. He adjusted his cap, then took a deep breath, drowning out the crowd's murmurs. Now that he could think clearly, he realized something. Perhaps he had made a hasty judgement. Yes, he had just lost Pikachu. And yes, two of his pokémon weren't exactly in peak condition. However, almost all of Cynthia's pokémon had taken damage. The battle hadn't reached a desperate stage for him yet.
Ash grabbed a pokéball. If I want to turn this around, I'll have to take a bit of a risk, since I want to keep my healthy pokémon in reserve. "Dragonite, I choose you!"
The pokéball released a bright flash of light, which materialized into Dragonite. She lay sprawled on the ground and sound asleep.
"Interesting." Cynthia selected and threw her pokéball, proclaiming, "Dance in the heavens, Garchomp!"
The mass of light released by the pokéball thumped into the ground, swirling, and dissipated, revealing Garchomp, who had her arms crossed in front of her face. She unveiled her face and roared. Seeing that her opponent was asleep, she put her claws on her hips, scoffing in amusement.
Ash clenched his fist. There you are, Garchomp.
"Dragon Claw!"
Garchomp rushed in. Her claws burst with green energy, forming a pair of shimmering blades. She kicked Dragonite upward, then swung one of her claws upward, knocking Dragonite higher into the air.
Ash cupped his hands around his mouth. "Dragonite, wake up!"
"Keep attacking, Garchomp!"
Garchomp leapt. Almost instantaneously, she reached Dragonite's height; she whirled and lashed out with her Dragon Claws, knocking her out of the sky. Dragonite slammed into the ground and bounced off it. Garchomp was already right beside her. She wrapped her arms around Dragonite's waist and threw herself back, executing a suplex on her.
Flat on her stomach and visibly injured, Dragonite remained fast asleep.
Ash repeatedly called out to Dragonite, panic rising in his voice as Garchomp continued to beat her up. As he got more desperate, he decided to try one last plea.
"Come on, Dragonite, wake up! Otherwise, who's going to give Garchomp a hug? No one gives hugs like you do!"
Dragonite tumbled away as a result of Garchomp's latest attack. The latter's claws lit up for another Dragon Claw. She rushed in for a strike, and—
In a sudden burst of movement, Dragonite stood up and wrapped her arms around Garchomp, locking her in an airtight grip. Surprised, Garchomp struggled against it, but her arms were pressed against her sides, leaving her with little room to wriggle.
Cynthia gasped. "That woke her up‽"
Ash sighed in relief. "I can't believe that worked," he muttered. Raising his voice, he said, "Keep going, Dragonite!"
Dragonite increased the pressure of her bear hug. Garchomp cried out in pain as she felt her bones and lungs being squeezed. The pressure increased steadily until a toylike squeak! escaped her maw.
Grinning, Ash motioned with his arms. "Alright! Now, use Dragon Dance Toss!"
Cynthia frowned. "Dragon Dance Toss?"
Dragonite smirked and unfurled her tiny wings. Spinning, she took off and traced circles in the sky as she flew. After accumulating enough speed, she dove and threw Garchomp into the ground once it grew near. Thud! A cloud of dust rose around Garchomp's point of impact.
Dragonite flew away to observe her handiwork from afar. That had been a good hit, but with her numerous scratches and bruises, she couldn't proclaim herself the clear winner of this bout.
"How do you like it, Cynthia?" Ash asked, thumping a fist on his chest. "We've been practicing to make sure we could make the most out of our moves!"
She nodded. "Very impressive. Though not as befuddling as that strategy you used earlier."
Ash gave her a sheepish look, chuckling.
"Return, Garchomp." After recalling the pokémon, Cynthia switched her pokéball for another one. "Emerge once more, Togekiss!"
The Fairy-Flying pokémon emerged in a flourish. Not only was she noticeably injured, but the occasional twinkle of electrical sparks reminded Ash of her paralysis.
He hummed. There isn't a whole lot Dragonite can do to damage Togekiss. "Use Hurricane!"
"Togekiss, use Wish!"
Dragonite bellowed a roar and beat her wings, sending stormy winds toward Togekiss. At the same time, the latter put her wings together in prayer. A white glow surrounded her body briefly before it flew into the heavens. Dragonite's Hurricane assaulted her afterward, sending her to the ground. She crashed into it and bounced off it a few times before sliding to a stop.
"Move in and attack, Dragonite!"
"Zen Headbutt!"
Dragonite dove toward Togekiss. The latter picked herself up and sprung toward the former, her forehead glowing with psychic energy. Dragonite weaved around her and grabbed her wing with her arms. She spun around like a top, then released Togekiss. She sailed straight into the ground, and her back slammed into it, kicking up a dust cloud. Togekiss coughed up spittle as a wave of pain coursed through her. Her muscles went numb, and her vision blurred as she began to lose consciousness.
But before she could welcome its cold embrace, a light descended from the heavens and washed over her. Her injuries healed over, and a chunk of her stamina returned to her. Now revitalized, she cried out, righting herself and dispelling the dust cloud with a flourish.
Ash clenched his fists. Crap! We were too slow to take her out!
Cynthia shoved her arm forward, smirking. "Sky Attack!"
Togekiss perched on the ground, and a blue aura flared to life around her as she charged her attack.
Ash gulped. This is bad. Dragonite is too limited with how she can fight Togekiss. Perhaps I should switch? … No. Sirfetch'd and Dracovish wouldn't fare much better. And as for Lucario… I need to keep him for last, even if he would have a partial type advantage.
He perked up. Type advantages… I think I've got something! "Dragonite, use Draco Meteor!"
Cynthia looked shocked. "What‽"
Dragonite roared out to the heavens as she gathered energy for her attack. She fired a purple ball of energy into the sky, which broke off into a slew of meteors. As they came down, some struck Togekiss and bounced off her plumage harmlessly. The rest of them hit the ground, which cracked and sent boulders into the air.
Ash grinned. "Use Hurricane!"
Dragonite panted briefly from the exertion of using Draco Meteor before she acted upon the command. She beat her wings, creating a gust that sent the boulders flying into Togekiss. They cracked against her body, and the pain broke her concentration and made her yowl.
Cynthia seemed to be in awe. She smiled as she grabbed Togekiss' pokéball. "Return, Togekiss." Once that was done, she stashed the pokéball on her belt. "That was a most ingenious strategy, Ash. Your adaptive prowess is laudable."
Ash chuckled, rubbing a finger under his nose. "Thanks. I try my best."
Cynthia selected her next pokéball. "Go, Gastrodon!"
After emerging, the Water-Ground pokémon bobbed her head to adjust her Rocky Helmet. She still held a few injuries from her previous match.
"Use Curse!"
Gastrodon cried out, and ghoulish energy swirled around her. Then, an orange aura flared upward around her, followed by a downward shower of blue particles.
She has Wish on Togekiss and Curse on Gastrodon… What other strategies does she have to improve her team's survivability? Ash shook his head. Either way, it'd be best to focus on the present fight. He pointed. "Draco Meteor!"
Dragonite charged and fired another ball of purple energy into the sky. However, this one was much smaller than her previous one and lacked power, allowing Gastrodon to withstand it with relative ease.
Ash growled. Right. I've used it too much; I can't rely on it anymore.
"Gastrodon, use Stone Edge!"
Crying out, she summoned two rings of pointed stones and fired them in a volley. Following her trainer's lead, Dragonite defended herself with Dragon Claw. The boost from her earlier Dragon Dance still flowed through her, allowing her to deflect the incoming strikes as she retreated skyward.
A realization slowly dawned on Ash. I don't have any other options… "Rush in, Dragonite!" And please, knock her out before she does.
Dragonite bellowed a roar and dove in. She assaulted Gastrodon with a vicious series of strikes, wincing as she received Rocky Helmet damage with each hit. She pushed through anyway, not relenting on her assault.
"It'll take more than that to take Gastrodon out! Stone Edge!"
Gastrodon's third eye gleamed, and the ground below shifted as a spire of rock burst out of the ground. It slammed into Dragonite's gut, whose eyes widened in shock. She gave a final pained cry as she was sent flying back. Her back thudded against the ground, where she settled, knocked out.
The referee floated down to inspect her, then raised his arm. "Dragonite is unable to battle!"
Ash recalled her to her pokéball and turned it around. "Thanks for everything. Take a good, long rest, alright?" He stashed her ball and observed Gastrodon. Dragonite had left some noticeable damage on her. All he had to do was finish the job.
He grabbed and threw a different pokéball. "Gengar, I choose you!"
When he emerged from the pokéball, Gengar was covered in scratches and was panting. But as long as he was conscious and breathing, he could still fight; that's what mattered.
Ash balled his hand into a fist. "Let's do it! Will-O-Wisp!"
An orange glow surrounded Gengar as he slapped his hands together. A dozen flaming, purple wisps were summoned, and he sent them Gastrodon's way. Being so corpulent, she couldn't dodge and had to tank the hits. She winced as a burn started to affect her.
She glared at Gengar. Gastrodon wasn't one to take such an affront lightly. She pooled her strength and cried out. Cracks and fissures ran through the ground, snaking toward Gengar. He gathered multicoloured light and concentrated it below him. As Gastrodon's Earth Power erupted from underneath, his impromptu barrier absorbed the blow. The only blowback he received was getting pushed skyward. Meanwhile, Gastrodon cried out in pain as flames wracked her.
"Stone Edge!"
"Sludge Bomb!"
The two pokémon released a volley of their respective attacks. They clashed against each other, but Gastrodon's projectiles were weakened by her burn, which made her lose the clash. A series of poisonous projectiles struck her, causing her to wince. And to add insult to injury, her status condition acted up, coating her in a wave of flames.
Gengar kept the ball rolling. He cupped his hands at his side, forming a dark-purple ball of energy between them. He chucked it, and it detonated on Gastrodon's chest. She reeled from the blow, her head tottering from side to side as her vision blurred from exhaustion.
Cynthia's look hardened. "Gastrodon, use Sandstorm!"
With the last of her strength, she cried out. A sandstorm kicked up, buffeting Ash, Pikachu, and Gengar. The spectators were kept safe from it by the barrier. A shower of flames wracked her one final time before she gave out, toppling onto her side.
The referee gave her a cursory examination before giving out his verdict. "Gastrodon is unable to battle!"
The roaring cheers of the crowd filled the stadium.
Cynthia recalled Gastrodon to her pokéball.
Ash shielded his face from the sandstorm with his arm. That makes us even: four pokémon left on both sides. And I have a feeling about who our next foe may be…
Cynthia threw her next pokéball. "Thrive in your natural habitat, Garchomp!"
Garchomp emerged from her pokéball, doing a three-point landing. She stood up to her full height, smirking as she took note of her surroundings.
Cynthia put her arm on her hip. "How will you handle this one, Ash?"
"I'll tackle it head-on like I always do!" Ash punched the air. "Gengar, use Shadow Ball!"
"Dodge it!"
Garchomp scoffed at Gengar's incoming attack. How pitiful. Did he think she would just stand there and take it? She disappeared amidst the sandstorm, and the attack detonated harmlessly on the ground, much to Ash's annoyance.
He growled. With Sand Veil I play, it'll be a whole ordeal just to locate Garchomp. On top of that, Gengar won't last much longer in these conditions. I've got to make this quick! "Let's hit everywhere at once, Gengar! Dazzling Gleam!"
Gengar struggled with the buffeting sandstorm, but he was resilient. He gathered the necessary energy and unleashed a dazzling array of rainbow glitter, which stretched itself all over the battlefield. Ash strained his ears to try and perceive any reaction from Garchomp. However, he heard nothing except for the violent hissing of the churning sand.
Ash frowned. That's weird. Am I missing something here, or was there no impact in the first place? If it's the latter case, then… Ash gasped. Our opponent must be hiding underground! "Gengar, the floor! Brace yourself!"
Gengar would have acknowledged the command, but before he could, the ground below him burst apart. Garchomp came out, lunging at him with an outstretched claw. Eyes wide in surprise, he moved on instinct alone, leaning back. Garchomp's claw grazed his belly.
Gengar was pretty sure he saw his life flash before his eyes.
Garchomp landed, scowling at him for his evasive manoeuvre. A second later, the sandstorm swallowed her up; she was gone again.
"Congratulations. You figured that out just in time," Cynthia said, smirking. "But can you accurately predict Garchomp's next move?"
Ash gritted his teeth. Predict? No. The best I can do is guess. There are two more turns before the weather clears up. Would she attack with Dig again? Or would she switch it up? If only I could prevent one of the two outcomes, I could react much easier… He paused. Hold on, there is one thing we can try, even though we originally thought of this strategy to deal with a Ghost-on-Ghost matchup.
A smirk tugged at his lips. "Gengar! Phase into the ground and use Dazzling Gleam!"
Gengar acquiesced. He dove into the ground, passing through it like light filtering through glass. The first thing that hit him was relief, as the sandstorm could no longer reach him. It was a blessing for his nearly depleted stamina reserves.
But he digressed. Gengar focused on himself, sensing the vibrations running through the ground. He couldn't perceive any, so he figured Garchomp was not hiding out here, most likely. With that in mind, he focused, his brow scrunching up. Fairy energy oozed out of him and impregnated the dirt around him.
Once he finished, he steeled himself before phasing out of the ground. Braving the raging sandstorm, he warily observed his surroundings. Garchomp was not underground, which meant she had to be around here somewhere…
Ash noticed a nigh imperceptible, green twinkle, making him gasp. "Behind you, Gengar!"
"Your luck's ran out!" Cynthia shoved her arm forward. "Finish it, Garchomp!"
A blur of green light cut through the sandstorm. Gengar didn't even finish turning before it passed right through him.
Shink!
Garchomp stopped across Gengar, leaning forward with both arms outstretched on either side of her. With a dismissive snort, she dispelled the green veil of energy around her claws, stood erect, and crossed her arms. This battle…
Thud. Gengar's unconscious body hit the floor.
Hmph. She looked over her shoulder, smirking. …was over before it even began.
The referee confirmed it, announcing, "Gengar is unable to battle!"
Ash recalled him to his pokéball. He turned it around. "Thanks a lot. Leave the rest to us and rest up, alright?" He stashed the ball on his belt.
Ash had now lost half his team, and Cynthia had lost two. However, his remaining pokémon were unharmed, while Cynthia's had taken damage. Still, Togekiss could potentially heal herself and her teammates, so he had to stay on his guard for that.
Ash selected his next pokéball. There should be one turn left before this sandstorm lets up. That's when we can counterattack. He threw his pokéball. "Dracovish, I choose you!"
Crying out, Dracovish touched down on the battlefield. He winced as the sandstorm buffeted him but remained headstrong, shooting Garchomp a glare. She returned it with a sneer. It was cute when they thought they had a chance. She disappeared in the sandstorm.
"Get ready, Dracovish! Ice Fang!"
Dracovish's jaws became frosty as he prepared the attack and held it, ready to use it at any moment.
Meanwhile, Ash's eyes darted around the field, looking for any sign of Garchomp. Come on, we're ready for you. As soon as you make your presence known… There! "Dracovish, on your left!"
Dracovish pivoted. Indeed, Garchomp was dashing toward him. He sprinted to meet her halfway, then lunged, trying to bite her, but his jaws clamped on nothing. Garchomp had evaded him, leaving her in a position where she could strike his exposed flank.
A shimmering, green veil of energy formed around her claws. However, before she could swing her blades, the energy sputtered out of existence, much to the shock of Cynthia and Garchomp.
Ash gasped, then pumped a fist. Gengar's Cursed Body! Yes! "Dracovish, use Hydro Pump!" he ordered, reinvigorated.
Dracovish turned around and released a torrent of water. Eyes wide in panic, Garchomp arched her back. The attack sailed over her, grazing her chest. She committed to the fall, putting one claw on the ground to catch herself, and she spun, swiping Dracovish's feet from underneath him with her tail. Dracovish fell onto his back with a startled yelp, ceasing his Hydro Pump.
Garchomp put some distance between her and Dracovish, growling as the sandstorm began to subside.
Ash smirked. Finally, Garchomp can't take advantage of her ability anymore. This will be a good starting point for our counterattack.
"Return, Garchomp." A red light sucked her back into her pokéball.
Ash sighed. Of course, she wouldn't let that happen so easily.
Cynthia took out her next pokéball. "Battle once more, Roserade!"
As he emerged from his pokéball, Roserade somersaulted on his way to the ground. He landed neatly and at the ready to face Dracovish, who entered a battle-ready pose.
"Let's strike first, Dracovish!" Ash punched the air. "Hydro Pump!"
"Dodge and use Petal Blizzard!"
Dracovish reared his head back before he snapped it forward. A jet of water blasted out from his maw. Roserade dashed in and jumped over it. As he twirled in the air, petals danced around him. As he landed behind him, he launched barrages of them with motions of his arms. Dracovish reeled from each blow he took. Afterward, he shot his opponent a nasty glare. That was a cheap shot, and he wouldn't let that slide!
He cried out and dashed forward, gathering Water energy in his lower jaw. Roserade brought his arms back, the roses on their tips glowing purple. When Dracovish lunged at him, Roserade slid under him. Missing his attack threw Dracovish's balance out of whack, which gave Roserade enough time to turn around, jump, and shove his arms toward Dracovish. Purple spikes flew out of the flower buds and struck him in the back, making him howl in pain. The poison seeped in, and a purple splotch appeared on Dracovish's forehead.
Ash clenched his fists, groaning. Not good. Not good at all.
Roserade was not done yet. His flower buds glowed green, and he swung his arms toward Dracovish. Glowing vines extended from them and wrapped around Dracovish. He screamed in agony as he felt his energy being drained.
All the while, his rage bubbled over. Dracovish hadn't come here so he could get trampled over! He tensed. He came here to win!
Dragon energy exploded around him, startling Roserade as his Giga Drain snapped like brittle branches. Dracovish rushed toward Roserade and slammed into him. He cried out in pain as he was flung away. He bounced off the ground a few times before catching himself and sliding to a stop.
"Alright! Keep it up, Dracovish! Ice Fang!"
"Dodge it!"
Dracovish sprinted across the field, his lower jaw exuding snowy glitter. Roserade was ready to dodge; however, he flinched and stumbled to one knee. Dracovish took his opening and lunged. Roserade extended his arm toward Dracovish as bait. He took it, clamping his jaws down on it and releasing freezing air that coated it in a layer of frost.
Roserade grunted in pain. The pain was intense, but Dracovish was right where he wanted him to be. He faced his other arm toward the sky and made rotating gestures. A tornado of leaves came to life, engulfing them both. Dracovish shut his eyes in a wince, struggling to maintain his grip on Roserade's arm. A pang from his poisoning wracked him, and he involuntarily opened his mouth to cry out in pain. Roserade freed himself and jumped away, carried outside by the tornado's updraft. While he landed outside, Dracovish remained trapped within.
Ash gritted his teeth. "Dracovish! Turn that Leaf Storm around! Spin and use Dragon Rush!"
Dracovish opened his eyes, which shone with determination. He roared out to the heavens. An aura of blue energy exploded around him. He began spinning in the same direction as the tornado, making him accelerate. Dracovish's aura stretched further, enveloping the tornado of leaves around him.
Cynthia gasped. "Impossible!"
Roserade tried to anchor himself to the ground as the tornado started to pull him in. He failed. The tornado sucked him in, and the leaves that were once his allies turned against him and barraged him for a good while before he was flung out of the cyclone haphazardly. He thudded against the ground lightly.
As Roserade fell, Dracovish focused on drawing his expanded veil of energy, draping him in Dragon energy and the leaves from Roserade's Leaf Storm. Uttering a battle cry, he rushed toward his opponent, jumped, and collided with him. An explosion rang out, sending smoke everywhere.
As the dust settled, it revealed Dracovish standing triumphantly over his unconscious opponent.
The referee inspected Roserade's unconscious form, then raised his arm. "Roserade is unable to battle!"
The crowd broke out into cheers. Dracovish's heart swelled with pride, but his status condition cut his parade short. He sagged, moaning in pain.
Ash noticed this and grabbed his pokéball. "Dracovish, return."
To his surprise, Dracovish evaded the red beam and glared at him. Ash gasped. "Dracovish, what are you doing‽ You need to rest!"
Dracovish fervently shook his head and shot a determined glare at him. He wanted to keep fighting. He needed to keep fighting.
"Dracovish…" Ash stashed his pokéball away and nodded. "Alright, then. Let's keep it up!"
Dracovish turned around and released an energetic cry.
Cynthia returned the fainted Roserade to his pokéball. She hummed briefly before switching out her pokéballs. "Milotic, emerge once more!"
After touching down on the field, Milotic released a graceful cry. She sized up her opponent, taking note of his poisoning, then entered a battle-ready stance.
"Let's make it quick!" Ash motioned with both his arms. "Dracovish, use Hydro Pump!"
"Milotic, counter with your own Hydro Pump!"
The two Water pokémon fired torrents of water at each other. They clashed, seemingly at a stalemate, but Milotic started to gain on Dracovish, thanks to his status condition and her Mystic Water. She overpowered Dracovish's attack and struck him in the chest, sending him to slide backward.
"Use Coil! And follow it up with Iron Head!"
While Dracovish reeled, Milotic curled in on herself. Her muscles tensed, and power surged through her, signified by a flaring orange aura around her. Afterward, she sprung toward Dracovish, her forehead gleaming with a metallic sheen.
"Fight back, Dracovish! Dragon Rush!"
Dracovish recovered from Milotic's blow and dashed in, draped in a blue aura of energy. The two pokémon collided in the centre of the battlefield, entering another clash. They struggled and pushed against each other, neither pokémon budging an inch. Seconds later, Dracovish suffered from his status condition, and Milotic capitalized on that slip-up: She swung her head upward, destabilizing Dracovish, then lashed out with her tail, smacking him upside the head. He stumbled backward, dazed, but Milotic gave him no breathing room, closing the distance and wrapping herself around him tightly. Dracovish struggled against the grip, but it was in vain.
"Finish this, Milotic! Disarming Voice!"
Milotic opened her mouth. Fairy energy gathered in it in preparation for a super-effective attack against Dracovish.
Ash clenched his teeth. "We're not done yet! Dracovish, use Fishious Rend!"
Dracovish vigorously wriggled his head free and chomped down on Milotic's serpentine body, which made her wince.
"Ice Fang!"
Sub-zero air oozed out of Dracovish's maw and started to coat Milotic's scales in ice. Unfortunately, his struggles proved to be fruitless, as his status condition acted up again. Milotic did not waste any time capitalizing on this opportunity. She released her Disarming Voice at point-blank range. It wracked Dracovish, who roared in pain. Ultimately, he couldn't hold out and lost consciousness partway through.
Milotic halted her attack. She released Dracovish from his coils, letting him limply fall to the floor.
The referee came over to inspect him. He raised his arm in the air. "Dracovish is unable to battle!"
"Dracovish, return!" a red light beamed the unconscious pokémon to his pokéball. Ash turned it around. "You were great out there. Take a good rest, okay?"
Now, he was down to his last two pokémon. But only three adversaries remained. Milotic should still be reeling from her previous battle, so Ash was confident in his abilities to turn this around.
He grabbed his next pokéball and chucked it. "Sirfetch'd, I choose you!"
AN:
So, yeah, that's how I would make Gengar, Dragonite, and Gastrodon play a more active role in this battle. I hope their performance was to your liking and/or that you found it better than whatever the anime did to them.
