Chapter 2: CONFUSION OF FEELINGS
Inside the ambulance, Bokuto was watching the paramedics closely as they administered first aid to Kuroo. The concern was palpable in his gaze and in his posture, and he held Kuroo's hand firmly, silently conveying support and affection.
As the situation evolved, Bokuto realized that something more serious was going on. He could feel the tension in the air as the paramedics exchanged worried glances and discussed the situation in low voices. The uncertainty of what was to come made his stomach clench, but he refused to let fear take over.
When the paramedics mentioned Kuroo needing further examination and possibly surgery, Bokuto felt a lump in his throat. The thought of Kuroo undergoing surgery was overwhelming, and he struggled to contain his own emotions. He knew he needed to be strong for Kuroo, but it was clear that his internal struggle was building.
Bokuto kept his hand intertwined with Kuroo's, conveying support and love even in the midst of uncertainty. He struggled to focus on the paramedics' words and the decisions being made, as he struggled not to let his own emotions show.
"I'm here with you Tetsu, you're going to be fine" He kisses her hand nonstop while murmuring words of affection and comfort.
As the ambulance approached the hospital, Bokuto was determined to be by Kuroo's side, no matter what. He wanted to be an unwavering support even as he was facing his own fears and worries. He knew he needed to be there for Kuroo, to provide strength and comfort during such a critical time.
At the hospital*
Bokuto guards anxiously pacing back and forth outside the room. After 30 minutes a doctor leaves where Kuroo entered:
"Doctor, how is he?" He quickly came to the short Lord, who looks at him calmly and adjusts his glasses.
"Young man, are you related to Kuroo Tetsurou?" the doctor asks.
"I'm his boyfriend, w-we live together Sir, my name is Bokuto Koutarou." He responds with some nervousness, because in Japan homoaffective relationships are still taboo and frowned upon by many people.
"Nice to meet you lad, and is there anyone in charge at the moment who can speak for him?" The Lord continues.
"No, at the moment his parents are away, but what does he need? What's going on, doc?" He starts to get worried about those questions.
"Lord Bokuto, please accompany me." The doctor leads Bokuto to a more secluded corner of the room.
"The tests show that Kuroo has a subdural hematoma. It's a collection of blood between the brain and the membrane that surrounds it. The pressure is building and this is causing a worrying decrease in the level of consciousness." The doctor tells him seriously.
"What can we do? How can we help?" Bokuto speaks with wide eyes
"We need to act quickly. The only way to treat this is surgery to remove the hematoma and relieve pressure on the brain."
"Surgery? But will he be okay?" He swallows hard.
The doctor calmly places his hand on her shoulder.
"We're doing everything we can to ensure the best outcome. Surgery is a necessary step to address his condition."
"I understand. I just… I just want him to be okay." His eyes are filled with worry, but he holds back the tears, he needs to be strong, for Kuroo.
"We share that wish. Our team is experienced and will do everything in their power to help Kuroo, we will get him into surgery as soon as possible, I need you to sign the responsibility papers as his partner."
"Okay thank you Sir" He nods and watches him leave before sighing and looking up. "Tetsu…"
After an hour he was informed that Kurro was in surgery, it is to be expected that he starts to get anxious, he runs his hands over his face and takes a deep breath
"I need to calm down. Kuroo will be fine."
He heads to the bathroom, taking a moment to regain his composure. Splashing water on his face, he tried to ward off the anxiety that was building. After a few minutes, he returns to the waiting room, where Akashi and Kenma have just arrived.
"Bokuto-san, how are you?" Akashi quickly comes to him with Kenma.
"Any news about Kuroo?"
"More or less. They took him into surgery an hour ago." He explains quickly, trying to calm down, Akaashi puts his hands on his shoulders and leads him to the hospital chairs to sit down.
"They know what they're doing. Kuroo-san is in good hands."
"The surgery is for the best of him." Kenma sits on his other side and looks down.
"I know, but...the anxiety is eating me up." He looks at Akaashi and at his hands, which are shaking.
"It's natural to feel that way. But you have to remember that you're doing everything you can, and so does the medical team."
Kenma nods along and looks at him.
"We're here for you and Kuroo."
Kenma's phone is bombarded with messages and he shows it to Bokuto.
"Not just us, Hinata, Atsumu and everyone else are worried, and are waiting for good news, Kuroo is going to be fine."
"Thanks guys! Don't make me cry!!" He pulls and swings them like an emotional child, with his two strong, muscular arms, and he gets a grimace from Kenma and Akaashi, but that soon turns into a soft smile.
4 hours passed until the end of the surgery, the same doctor approaches them, Bokuto who was tired of waiting, had his elbows bent over his knees and prayed for the best, Kenma lying on Akashi's shoulder while he caressed his locks .
"Lord Bokuto?" hearing his name he gets up quickly.
Yes, doctor. How's Kuroo doing?" He speaks anxiously.
Fearful Akaashi and Kenma also join them.
"Do we have any news about his recovery?" Akashi asks at the same time
"How was the surgery?"
The doctor looks at the three friends with seriousness and understanding.
"The surgery to remove the hematoma was successful, but there are some complications we need to discuss."
"Complications? What happened?" Bokuto speaks with a frown.
"Please tell us doctor." Akaashi holds Kenma who is watching intently.
"After the surgery, Kuroo did not wake up as expected. We are closely monitoring his condition, but we also need to run additional tests."
"Additional tests? What are you looking for?" Bokuto crosses his arms and looks at him intently.
"There was an impact on the head area and there is concern about possible sequelae, especially related to memory."
"Sequelae in memory?" Akaashi looks at the doctor and at his friend, fearing the worst in his reaction to what he just heard.
"Is this serious?" Kenma speaks.
"We are investigating and will perform tests to determine the scope of these possible sequelae. The situation is delicate, and we are working to fully understand it."
Bokuto continues looking at the doctor, wide-eyed: "Sequelae in memory? What does that mean?"
The impact of the doctor's words hits Bokuto like a punch in the stomach. His anxious expression turns to deep concern as he tries to absorb the news.
The Doctor looks at him with empathy "We understand that this news is difficult to digest. We are doing everything we can to accurately assess the situation."
Bokuto tries to speak, his voice shaking "I... I just want him to be okay. Kuroo can't lose his memories."
Akaashi places a hand on his shoulder
"We are here for him, Bokuto-san."
Bokuto feels the mix of emotions inside him: worry, fear and an intense need to see how his boyfriend is doing. He lowers his head for a moment, trying to hold back the tears that threaten to fall.
He takes a deep breath and speaks with determination
"I will stay by his side, no matter what. Tetsu is strong, and we will get through this together."
The news of possible memory damage shakes Bokuto to the core, but his determination to support Kuroo in the face of this adversity remains unshakable.
The Doctor intended to leave them a word of comfort before leaving them alone, seeing that one of the nurses was quickly approaching.
"We're doing all the necessary tests to understand the full picture. It's too early to..."
Before the doctor can finish his sentence, the nurse interrupts the conversation.
"Sorry Doctor Miller, but the patient has woken up. He is confused and very agitated."
The look of surprise spreads across Bokuto's face as he adjusts his posture quickly. "What? Kuroo woke up?"
Akaashi and Kenma are startled to hear the unexpected news. "But he was..." he asks looking at Kenma who responds frowning "That's weird."
The Nurse explains, "He woke up a few minutes ago. We were trying to calm him down, but he seemed very upset."
Bokuto is paralyzed, as if lightning has struck him, bringing a mixture of surprise, relief and anxiety. His eyes widened upon hearing about Kuroo waking up, but they are also filled with concern at the reported confusion and agitation.
Akaashi wakes him from his daydream with a hand squeezing his shoulder "Come on, Bokuto-san. Let's see how he's doing."
Kenma nods too and asks the doctor: "This is unexpected, but it's good that he's awake, can we go see him?"
"We're still not sure what's going on, but I'll allow it considering stability" The doctor nods.
Together they follow the nurse and the doctor towards the room where Kuroo is. Bokuto feels his heart race as he thinks of what he might find.
When they arrive outside the room, the nurse asks them to wait in the hallway while she and the doctor go inside. Bokuto hears noises and he concentrates to listen, he is confused but gets emotional when he hears his boyfriend's voice.
"Let go of me you bastards, where am I? What's going on?" Kuroo's voice is exasperated and agitated followed by the nurses.
′′ Boy, if you don't sit down, you'll be sedated ′′ . They heard a man's voice, alert and firm.
"We've explained it to you my dear now, calm down." A female voice speaks.
"How am I supposed to believe what you just told me?" My p* Stop! Take your hand off me, I want out!! No... don't touch me!"
"Prepare the medication this way the stitches will open" another muffled voice echoes.
Kuroo's voice is full of confusion and despair, expressing fear and lack of understanding of the situation. The words come out quickly, and his tone is laced with anguish and frustration, reflecting his inner turmoil. His words are filled with mixed emotions as he tries to make sense of reality.
" TETSU! "" Bokuto shouts, not being able to bear to hear the suffering of his beloved, he calls out to him hoping to be heard and at least have some positive reaction.
"What?" Kuroo's voice fades away confused, when Bokuto opens the door of the room without being called, he comes face to face with a dizzy Kuroo, being held by a nurse, while another one finishes injecting a medication in his arm.
"Tetsu!!" He calls out again and approaches Kuroo.
One of the nurses approaches to expel him, but the doctor quickly raises his hand, signaling that he doesn't have to.
Kuroo stops struggling with the nurse and tries to fight the drowsiness, when he hears a voice calling him, he feels familiar and at the same time he can't identify, feeling various emotions when he sees it.
The guy in front of him, he's almost his size, athletic physique, seems like a pretty tough guy, which completely changes your opinion when you look at his face.
He was biting his lower lip which was trembling, tears on his rosy cheeks, thin nose reddened, the most beautiful thing he had ever seen in his life.
"Wh-Who… " He babbles and feels a hand on his face causing him to look into bright yellow eyes, which reminds him of cute owls, white, black and yellow colors.
He keeps trying to identify but he can't, he just looks at those yellow eyes, black hair with gray streaks, memorizing that face until he managed to ask.
"W-Who are you?" He asks confused and then regrets it, when he sees the boy's face fall, making him feel anguish and an inexplicable feeling of guilt for what he had just asked.
"I-I'm here Tetsu, I'll never leave you" The deep and vibrant voice is full of tears, it calms his heart, it has a warm and resonant tone. He gets more confused with himself before he feels severe headaches, he closes his eyes as light flashes from a high ceiling and lights, flashes through his mind.
"Let's put him to bed, he needs to rest, the medicine is already working" they put him to bed and he soon feels exhaustion taking his confusion and tiredness.
Hall
"I wonder what happened?" Kenma asks Akashi who was trying to listen through the door
"It was calm, I think they managed to contain Kuroo-san, but it's kind of weird." He speaks and quickly jumps back as the door opens.
A Bokuto with red eyes and hurriedly walks out of the hall.
"Hey, wait Bokuto-san!! What happened?" Akaashi calls after him and looks confused at Kenma, who leaves after a crying Bokuto, who stops and sits on one of the benches outside the hospital.
"Bokuto-san"
Bokuto stared ahead in disbelief at what just happened.
Kuroo forgot about him, maybe more than that, who he really is, what they are to each other.
"Bokuto-san" Akashi calls and shakes him causing him to blink and close his eyes and lower his head.
"What happened in there? Tell us" Kenma looks at him sitting on the bench too.
He looks up at Akaashi and returns to Kenma and speaks with tears in his eyes:
"Kuroo, forgot about me".
