Chapter 20
"Most of her injuries are superficial, her eyes are the main thing I'd be concerned about, they've received some kind of trauma that's making them exceptionally sensitive to light" Doctor Tompson had just finished examining Rachel "What kind of trauma?" Barbara asked "I'm not sure, I've never seen anyone like her or anything like this" Leslie had finished packing up her medical bag "I'll be back in a couple of days to see if anything has changed."
Next morning, 2 Am
Kara walked down the hall toward the dim blue light coming from the kitchen, She had been sleeping and was wearing a large grey T-shirt with the daily planet Scrawled across the chest, and a pair of red hipsters. Her bare feet quietly slapped on the cold floor, as she entered the tile-floored kitchen, there in the glow from the open fridge stood Rachel a sandwich in one hand and half a bagel in her mouth, she wore a tight black undershirt and a pair of short tight black and white volleyball shorts that came about an inch and a half down her thigh.
"Rachel, what are you doing?" Kara asked,
"I was really hungry" Rachel paused "And I can't sleep"
"Why not?" Kara stepped farther into the kitchen "Every time I try to sleep I can't get them to shut up" Rachel covered her face with her hands
"Who?" Kara asked "I don't know it's just whispers, I can't understand what their saying" She was shaking, Kara took her hands.
"It's gonna be ok" Rachel looked up at her, her eyes shimmering as the dim fridge light reflected off the tears pooling in her eyes "How about I bunk with you tonight, keep you company if you can't sleep?"
"Ok," Rachel said reluctantly. Kara lay next to Rachel in the dark room, not even the moonlight seeping through the dark curtains,
"Thank you Kara" Rachel whispered "Of course" Kara wrapped Rachel in her blanket pulling her tightly against her, she could feel Rachel's steady breath against her arm as she drifted off.
8 days later
Kara climbed into bed beside Rachel, a low-light lamp beside the bed shed enough light for the two girls to still see each other. Both girls lay on their sides and began to talk a little before going to sleep which had become their new routine,
"Rachel," Kara said interrupting something she had been saying, Rachel looked up at her, and their eyes locked with each other for a moment, Kara slowly moved her face closer to Rachel, Her hands slid around Rachel and pulled her closer to her. Rachel's hands found their way around Kara's neck as their lips pressed together, Kara could feel Rachel's warm ragged breath on her cheek, Rachel's tongue found its way past her lips, and that's when Rachel pushed away her face dropping away from Kara's,
"uh, Good night Kara, she turned away and pulled the blanket over her, her breathing still rough. Kara lay there confused for a minute before turning the light off, when she returned to her place beside Rachel she wrapped her arms around her, pulled her close, and fell asleep with Rachel's head nestled against her chin.
The Next Morning
Rachel blocked Kori's kick with her forearm, she turned just in time to see the follow-up punch flying right at her face, before it could make contact Someone called out "Rachel!" Kara approached from the other side of the room "Rachel, I need to talk to you"
"What is it?" Rachel asked, her eyes avoiding Kara's,
"Can we talk alone?" Kara motioned toward the door "Ok," Rachel didn't really want to have the conversation but wanted to have it in front of Kori even less. When they found an empty room Kara began "We need to talk about last night" Rachel again avoided looking at her,
"No, we can just pretend it didn't happen" Rachel kept her tone hushed
"I don't want to" Kara hadn't thought about anything else since she'd woken up
"Why?" Rachel knew exactly why Kara wanted to talk about it, the same reason she'd had butterflies all morning, but she wanted Kara to say it first.
"Because Rachel, I like you, and I've never felt this way about anyone, I've been alone most of my life, and now I have a family with the Titan's but you, you're different" Rachel finally looked up to Kara's eyes
"I don't really remember a lot from before I was taken I was too young, I've never done anything like this" Her eyes had retreated to the ground again,
"I haven't either, but I know I like you" Kara tipped Rachel's face up toward her "Rachel, Will you be my girlfriend?" both girl's breathing had become heavier,
"Yes," Rachel shared her second kiss with Kara on the day she turned fifteen, Kara's hands beneath her backside as she held her up for the long kiss.
