Chapter 1- Wild Dragon problems
Visery Targaryen I
Viserys Targaryen sat in the council room, listening in on the latest news about King's landing. However his mind is elsewhere, recalling the latest news from the maester about his pregnant wife.
He could feel it this time, not another still-born, no this would be the time. His dream would come true. After the cruel test the gods have forced him, this time they would bless him with a son. Aemma, the love of his life, his beloved wife was once more with a child.
This was her fifth pregnancy within the last decade or so, many times she would lose a child, only their daughter Rhaeneyra lived past her first name-day. However the question regarding succession had plagued both him and the realm.
Viserys loves his brother Daemon, his current heir, however he was not blind to his faults.
Viserys frowns as remembering his brother Daemon, making him recall another name he had long forgotten. Daemon was not the only brother he had.
No Viserys would not remember him, that disgrace that dare call himself a Targaryen.
His thoughts were interrupted by the voice of his Master of Laws.
Lord Lyonel Strong was a big man. Many would consider him a brute because of his stature, yet that would not be further from the truth. The man had spent his early days at the citadel and had even forged a chain, yet had left it for he felt his heart could not settle on being a maester.
"Your Grace" Lyonel Strong called him, getting Viserys attention.
"I'm sorry, my mind was elsewhere" Viserys said, turning back to his small council.
"We were discussing one of the main issues plaguing the kingdoms" Otto Hightower, his hand of the king, getting a long sign from Viserys.
"Dragons" Viserys said with a sign, more especially wild dragons.
Now in the tomes, dragons were native to the Shadow Lands beyond Asshai in the far southeast of the explored world and held by most to be mythological. Then, approximately five thousand years ago, the inhabitants of Valyria discovered dragons pairing in the Fourteen Fires, a great ring of volcanoes across the neck of the peninsula. They tamed and took control of the dragons using horns which magically bound the creatures to their masters, using them as their steeds, and forged a great empire spanning much of the eastern continent. They challenged their Ghiscari rulers many times and expanded to cover a vast amount of territory.
Five centuries ago, the Targaryen family travelled from Valyria to settle on the island of Dragonstone in the Narrow Sea. They used the active volcano on the island to serve as a hatchery for their own dragons.
Then the doom came and destroyed the Valyria empire, leaving only few surviving the fall and with Targaryens carrying the last eggs.
Then Aegon and his sister rode the three largest dragons and conquered the seven kingdoms.
After Aegon was crowned King of Westeros, the dragons were housed in the great Dragonpit of King's Landing. More dragon eggs were laid and hatched, and more dragons were born.
However not all dragons had riders, some eggs never hatched or hatch too far away for any Targaryen to claim, making them wild. While it is possible to tame a wild dragon, it is more difficult and claiming one already hatched young or once owned by another is less dangerous.
The Wild dragons are mostly kept on Dragonstone, the locals keep their distance and their respect from these mighty creatures, for only Targaryen blood can tame them.
But soon more and more dragons hatched, without Targaryen there to tame them they too grow to be wild.
And Dragons like any animal need food, and dragons never stop growing.
From eating fishes to eating livestock, soon wild dragons learn food is already gathered from human pens and hands.
They started taking food from the people, burning the farm animals or stealing the fish from a fishermen's boat.
Most smallfolk leave them alone, after all what could the smallfolk do against such a beast, but those that had nothing left fought back. Not letting dragons take away their hard earned food.
Which leads to them burning and being eaten themselves, making wild dragons taste man.
Now wild dragons start attacking the Seven Kingdoms and even Essos, burning the ships, buildings and people. They steal animals, fishes and even people, grabbing them with their claws and flying away.
All over the Seven Kingdoms felt attacked by these wild dragons, even King's landings weren't immune to the attacks.
Kings before Viserys had ordered all the dragon riders to fly against the wild dragons, normally scaring them when they got too close. However these lead to wild dragons trying to kill both the dragon rider and the dragon, rare for it to happen but the threat is still there.
"Another attack in the Lannisters your grace, the Burning Nightmare nearly destroyed all of their fleets" Mellos the grand maester said, Viserys signs at that, normally dragons are name by the Targeryen riders, but both the smallfolk and the lords give the wild dragons their own name.
More titles than anything, the wild dragon Burning Nightmare has a habit of setting itself on fire, since dragons are immune to fire, no Targeryens going near him.
"The Baratheon stock has been stolen by the Stormfly" Mellos list, a wild dragon with more horns and spikes than normal, attacks during storms and impale living things on its spikes, animal and man.
"And the Starks suffer the Night Fury's raids" Mellos finished, another wild dragon, the Night fury with scales as black as night, a perfect ambushed predator.
"Old Town suffered damage from the Lighthouse, the Boulder smashed the top of it" Otto Hightower, the hand of the King mentioned as well, the Boulder another wild dragon, known to smash through stone buildings with its hard head.
"The Tide Turner is also a scorn in the Narrow seas, beside the Triarchy" Corlys Velaryon, the master of ships, another wild dragon more swimming then flying, eating all the fishes and attack boats nearly by it.
"There's only so much I can do, we already keep the remaining eggs under lock and key, and having Dragons riders fly around the seven kingdoms, are not the ballista's working" Viserys said, Visery had dragon riders fly around the kingdoms, looking around for any wild dragons to scare off and finding any eggs before they hatch.
Most lords put ballista's on their forts, hoping to shoot them like Dorne once did.
"It not enough your grace, by the time the attack happens your riders are far too late to stop them and none of the ballista's hit it mark" Lyman Beesbury, master of coin notes, wild dragons attack and riders are too late to make anything better, wild dragons prove to fast against the aim of the ballista.
"Then I don't see what we can do, maybe faster ravens?" Visery suggests, looking at the Grand Maester.
"The citadel searches for faster messages, but none prove as capable as ravens" Mellos said, the citadel also searching for answers in faster messages.
"Well what else can we do? More dragons to tame, I need more riders for that" Visery said, they don't have enough Targaryen's to ride enough dragons to match the wild dragons.
"Your Grace, I have a suggestion to make." Lyonel Strong said hesitatingly, the other members of the council all looked at him. Viserys motioned for the man to continue.
"Your grace, your actions against these wild dragons hasn't met the intended expectation, perhaps we should try another in this instance," Lyonel Strong said, looking uncertain about what he was going to say next.
Viserys stared at the lord, part of him would have admonished the man uttering such words against him, but Viserys can't stop Lyonel words, they ring true.
"What are you suggesting, Lord Strong?" Viserys questioned the man. Lord Lyonel Strong did not speak up immediately. The man took his time and after some time he stared straight at the king,
"Perhaps we shall end the exile of Prince Dregon" Lord Strong said in a very serious tone.
The council chambers were silent after those words. Visery takes a breath, now recalling his younger brother.
Dregon Targaryen was the exiled Prince, the third-born of Baelon and Alyssa Targaryen, Brother to Viserys and Daemon Targaryen. He was different from the day he was born.
Many had expected him to never see past his first nameday but he proved a survivor.
On the day of his birth Baelon and Alyssa place Dregon's egg near his cradle, a Targaryen tradition. It was considered a sign that the child was a true Targaryen if the egg placed within his cradle hatched.
Baelon's dragon egg hatched, but it wasn't a good thing.
Both parents ran into his room at the sound of their child screaming and a dragon roaring, both parents smiled in pride at first hearing the dragon hatching.
But turned to horror as they went in to see the hatched dragon eating baby Dregon's hand.
Everyone got the dragon off baby Dregon, maesters working overtime to stop the bleeding, as parents and brothers look on in horror, The dragon keepers tried to catch the hatched dragon but the little dragon escaped out in the world.
From the day he was born the world was against Dregon Targaryen, becoming a cripple on the day he was born wasn't enough, ever since the attack, he started to fear dragons.
A Targaryen fearing dragons, absurd.
Dregon had to spend his life under supervision, losing a hand made it difficult for somethings. He needs to sleep somewhere away from any dragon shaped item, which is another issue since Targaryen are all about dragons.
Lucky King Jaehaerys Targaryen helped out his grandson, giving him the best support, maesters and the castle's blacksmith gave him the best straps for a false hand.
Dregon started to learn with books with his brother Viserys, and learned to fight with Daemon, both brothers are protective of their younger brother and always stop when people look at him.
Dregon the cripple, the broken dragon they call him.
But the one thing Dregon couldn't do is the dragon training, Dregon couldn't get over his fear of dragons when he was younger, not matter what any of the Targaryens to do.
Dregon the fearful, the Targaryen scared of dragons.
Dregon learn books and train in weapons when his brothers were flying dragons, Dregon fears slowly turn to hate, as he started to learn everything about dragons.
Not to ride, no how to kill.
Dregon want to make more out of the dragons, wanted to butcher them, see what parts of them can be useful, their scales, their wings, their teeth.
Their fire.
The Targaryen house is disturbed by this…obsession.
Dregon got older, he started to fight harder in the training, writing down weapon design and talking to dragon keepers about dragon upkeep.
Normally the Targeryens would be happy Dregon is warming up to the dragon, until they notice the look of rage in his eye at the mention of dragons.
Then the time came when Dregon came to the old king Jaehaerys Targaryen, requesting a few dragons' eggs and a few young dragons as well.
But the old king denies it, calling out to Dregon obsession with dragons with ill intention. He never even bonded with one.
Dregon calls out to the old king and the Targeryans, calling out to their protections of the dragons, they ride them but never master them, they shouldn't house these dragons, ride them. No, they need to dominate them, destroy their will to resist and discover their secrets.
Secrets of fire, flight, even magic, it all could be there if they let Dregon get his hands on the dragons.
But the old king dismissed him, without the presence of his wife to calm him down, old king got mad at Dregon obsession, how much the Targeryans did for him, calling him mad and exiled him.
"I have heard from some maesters at the citadel about the parchments writing in Dregon hand, such knowledge and weapon design is brilliant, Perhaps, you should end his exile" Lord Strong finished
Viserys fist tightened at the mention of Dregon, what Dregon said about his family, after all they did for him, Visery wasn't sure to be mad or sad for his brother to hate the Targaryen tradition and their dragons. Looking at his hand Otto Hightower hesitated for a moment.
"The Prince was exiled by The Old King for his disrespect and unfounded allegations" Otto spoke about the exile.
"However the real reason for not reversing the exile was for the killing of the wild dragon Cannibal" Otto spoke of the true reason of the exile as Visery looks down at that fact.
Dregon killed a dragon; a Targaryen killed a dragon, such news send shock not just to the Targaryens, but the rest of Westeros and the whole world.
They started to call him a title the Targaryens hated most of all.
Dregon, the Dragon slayer.
"The old King forbade him from doing anything to the dragons. Yet he defied those orders and killed one." Otto said, Lord Stone cut him off.
"King Jaehaerys forbade him from taking any of the Tame Dragons, yet the Prince did nothing to the tame dragons. He killed the wild dragon, the most dangerous one of them all from what I hear, he never went against the Old King's orders," Lord Strong finished with a smile.
But Viserys didn't smile; killing any dragon is still too much for Visery's heart.
"The crippled Prince has become quite the force in Essos, the free cities in Esso gave him his weight in gold for hunting wild dragons near there city, various other Magisters and Princes offer him much to hunt them down, his ships are said to be quite a sight for the eyes, even the Triarchy benefit from him" Corlys Velaryon said, the Master of ships said, hearing about the banished prince from his own endeavours.
"While Prince Dregon was wrong to disrespect the king, I believe ten years is enough, the young prince had suffered much throughout his life. And has made much of himself in these past decades, forgiveness could go a long way to learn how to fight off these wild dragons" Lord Beesbury spoke up.
"Yes his ships are made of dragon bones, said to be indestructible and spit fire" Corlys Velaryon said, interested in Prince Dregon mighty ships, said to cause dread to even the dragons themselves.
"Your grace, while you won't see the Triarchy as a threat, if they support Prince Dregon, they could be trying to influence him to go against us' ' Corlys said, getting Viserys attention.
"You believe my young brother would have me killed?" Viserys asked, questions to himself than the council; he never wrote or said anything to him since he was banished.
"If the Triarchy offers to help press his claim for the throne" Corlys said, leaving the silences in the room.
If Esso supports Prince Dregon for the throne, and his weapons against dragons, Viserys is now worried his relationship with his brother may lead to hate them enough to kill them all.
Viserys doesn't know what to think, his younger brother made so much of himself these past years,
Yet it is on the back of killing dragons, something Viserys could never forgive.
But Viserys knows he needs someone to deal with these wild dragons, which is someone not even his brother Daemon would do, the rogue prince is only willing to scare them.
Trying to tame them is proving impossible.
Viserys signs, he is the king, he must do what's best for his kingdom.
"Write a letter and send it to my brother, we…. Regrettably, I need his service. It is time that he returns to his family." Viserys turned to his hand, Otto nodded his head at his command.
"As you command your grace," Otto said gracefully. And Viserys got up from his chair and began to walk out of the chambers. He passed through the throne room with many servants bowing to him as he moved past the hallway and through the corridor.
Viserys entered his queen's chambers, pasting the two kingsguard at the door, looking to see his tired wife Aemma in the bed, her hair in a braid as she rested on the pillow.
She turned to look at him, and all his worries left him as he saw the smile stretch across her face.
"Viserys! Is the council meeting finished?" she asked him lightly. Viserys made his way toward her. He sat beside her and took her hand in his own and kissed it.
"Yes, the meeting is over," Viserys replied to her earlier question. He placed his hand over her belly. It was still big.
"I cannot wait for the birth of our son," Visery spoke truthfully. Aemma laughed slightly at his words
"How can you be sure that this will be a son," Aemma asked.
"I can feel it. It will be a boy this time," Visery said with conviction.
"Well, the Maesters just came in, and according to them, everything is fine," Aemma informed him in a serious tone. However, her tone became quite somber with her next words.
"But they said the same thing every time," Aemma said in a tired voice, Visery tightened his grip on her hands.
"The council made another proposal" Visery said, frowning as he took a seat next to his wife.
"A proposal about Daemon," Aemma asked for clarification. Viserys shook her head at her words.
"No, a petition to end Dregon's exile" Viserys said, Aemma turns to him.
"Dregon's exile, but why?" Aemma asked, she remembers young Dregon, a cripple boy in the royal family with a fear of dragons, Aemma always help young Dregon when she could, seeing the young one hurt from the very thing they take pride in.
Aemma used to help Dregon read with ancient tomes about many subjects, dragons as well, Aemma hoped to teach Dregon about dragons in order to overcome his fear.
She wasn't aware how successful she was.
"Too many wild dragons my dear, they cause too much havoc, he is the only man willing to do what we cannot" Visery signs at what he's doing.
"It would be good to have him back" Aemma said, seeing Visery tighten his lips.
"You don't want him to come back?" Aemma asked, looking at her king.
"I do, I love my brother Aemma, but what he did, what he continues to do" Visery said, not happy about what his younger brother does for a living.
"He's still afraid, Visery, we love the thing that hurt him, we never help him with his fear" Aemma said, looking at her husband, Visery looks down in shame, maybe he should have done more for his brother.
"I doubt Rhaenyra remembers him. She was quite young when he left," Aemma added, Rhaeyra was a little girl when Dregon was exiled, Viserys nodded at her words.
"Didn't he take his wife with him?" Aemma asked, making Visersy nod.
The old king did find a bride for Dregon, a third born daughter to a house from Vale, it was said Dregon stole her when he was banished.
"Have you told Daemon?" Aemma suddenly asked and Viserys shook his head.
"No. Not yet. He was not present for the meeting," Visery said,
"You should. He needs to know, he should know about his younger brother" she said yet Viserys shook his head at that.
"I wouldn't be so sure of that." Viserys said, one thing he was certain about was that nothing was certain when it came to Daemon Targaryen.
LINE
Daemon Targaryen I
Daemon Targaryen wanders through the Red Keep, hearing words in hushed tones as he pasted them, they thought himself oblivious to the japes.
But only a fool would believe Daemon Targaryen is oblivious.
He hears them all, all the plots, schemes and rumours surrounding him.
More aware then his brother Daemon though, who isn't blind himself to such plots, doesn't pay heed to them, not seeing the crows waiting for their king to drop his guard.
Daemon made his way through the castle gates, the servants bowed to him as he passed by them. A couple of maids giggled when he smiled at them.
He walked through the corridor, heading towards the council chambers, until he saw the greatest thorns in his backside.
Otto Hightower, Hand of the King. The second son who rose higher than he had any right to. The man who occupied the office that Daemon deserved. The same man who had convinced Viserys to strip him of his title as the Master of Laws.
An absolute cunt of a man.
The man stood conversing with his daughter, Alicent Hightower. The girl was comely enough with her brown locks and angled face. The girl was a constant companion to his niece.
Daemon thought about her age and found himself thinking about her match. The young Lady spotted him from the corner of her eye and curtsied.
"My prince," Alicent said with a light bow, and Daemon saw her father spot him as well. Daemon had a smirk on his face as he looked at Otto's daughter for some time.
He loves making Otto squirm when he looks at his daughter.
"My Lady," Daemon bowed as well, not paying any respect to her father, who was still slightly tense.
"It is good that you are here Prince Daemon. But I am afraid you are quite late, the small council meeting has already ended," Otto spoke up from the side. Daemon had not missed the lack of a greeting.
"Well, I was quite busy with my duties as The Commander of the city watch. I am sure there was nothing significant to discuss in the meeting," Daemon said, finally looking at the King's Hand.
Otto Hightower stood there imperiously; Daemon looked at the badge of the Hand of the King pinned to his doublet.
His rightful position, Daemon thought to himself.
"On the contrary, my prince, a topic of significance was brought up." Otto said with a slight smirk. Daemon did not miss the slightly haughty tone.
"And what was it, has the King finally decided to listen to the Master of Ships and start a campaign in the Stepstones," Daemon spoke nonchalantly. Lady Alicent already escaped to the hallway.
Leaving the two powerful men with their rivalry.
"No, the King wished to maintain a healthy relationship with the Triarchy, the matter discussed was more of a personal nature," Otto spoke with a smirk, Daemon narrowed his eyes at him.
There were only a few personal matters to discuss at a council meeting.
"As per the council's recommendation, the King has decided to end the exile of his brother. The crown is inviting Prince Dregon back to his birthplace," Otto spoke, surprising Daemon.
"You what!" Daemon asked in shock, letting his guard down at the mention of his youngest brother.
"Have you gone mad?! His exile is supposed to be eternal!" Daemon said in shock, can't believe the council would even consider bringing his mad brother back.
Otto looked startled by Daemon's outrage, of course he was not aware of their brotherhood.
"The council believed" "You know nothing about Dregon, you dumb cunt, he is no Targaryen, not one that should be near any dragon" Daemon cuts him off, why would his brother listen to the council about this, the word of his hand.
"Dregon knowledge in dragons would prove be benefited to the seven kingdom, against the wild ones" Otto spoke but Daemon shakes his head.
"He will not part with it, the hunting of dragons is his and his alone, he is a danger to us all" Daemon spoke in slight fear, which got Otto curious.
"You fear him" Otto spoke with uncertainty, Daemon never showed fear from anyone, not to him or the king.
But to Dregon.
"You are a fool not to fear him too Otto, does the crown have knowledge of his whereabouts" Daemon asked, Otto nodding his head.
"Lord Corly has heard of Dregon's fleet last seen in Bravos, the king has tasked him to use his connections to deliver the letter to his brother." Otto spoke but Daemon shakes his head.
"Tell Lord Corlys not to waste his time, I will talk to my brother about this. This doesn't need the council intervention" Daemon said, feeling a little bit better in seeing Otto hesitate for a moment. The aged man spoke up after a moment.
"Perhaps you should speak about this with the council," Otto spoke up. Daemon just shook his head at that.
"I don't think so. I will take it up with my brother directly." Daemon walks off, leaving the hand with his thoughts as he makes his way to his brother.
'How much more will you spite me, Viserys,' Daemon thought as he made his way towards the King's chambers. He reached the door and saw the two Kingsguard guarding it. He walked straight though without giving them a chance to react.
Daemon enters his brother's chambers, seeing Viserys seated on a chair with the marble from the model in front of him glistened with the light. Viserys turned at the sudden interruption.
"I believe I asked, not to be dist…" Viserys' words stop when he spotted his brother.
"Daemon, what brings you here in such a hurry?" Viserys asked with a frown.
Daemon wanted to shout at his brother, why would he bring Dregon back after what he did, what he's doing now, why does he listen to the council but not his brother, why was he never offered the position to stay but his side as he rightfully deserved.
But no, Daemon took a deep breath, knowing his words wouldn't affect his brother.
"I have heard some rumours lately," Daemon began and he saw the words register as Viserys began nodding his head.
"Ahh, so you have heard. Yes, I believe that the news is accurate. I have decided to pardon our brother. I am going to invite Dregon back to his home." Viserys said with a small frown.
"And what brought this change of heart? You aware of what he did correct? What he continues to do right?" Daemon spoke, a little heat leaking into his words. Daemon like the other Targeryen was outrage at Dregon killing of dragons.
Targeryen are connected to dragons, they are the dragons, yet this cripple sever it, treat them like an animal to hunt and butcher.
"Lord Strong made a compelling case, wild dragons have be a thorn to the Seven kingdoms long enough, Esso is using his new 'profession' why not us as well, Lord Velaryon mention this as well, beside I believe it enough time has passed to put it all behind us" Viserys spoke up.
"Behind us? Viserys, Dregon kills dragons, we should be stopping him before he kills our dragons brother" Daemon spoke out, but Viserys didn't stop him.
"Calm down Daemon" Viserys said, grabbing Daemon's shoulder to calm him down as Daemon took a breath.
"I know Daemon, but right now we need him now more than ever, the wild dragons are become too much for everyone, how long until they ask for him themselves, how long until other asked us to kill our own dragons" Viserys said to him, knowing the lords will see the dragons as too much of a threat,
"They have no right to say that, we own the dragons, we could still tame them" Daemon said, trying the same excuses, as Viserys chuckles.
"You'll have better change taming Cannibal then these ones" Viserys said, these wild dragons are too much for them.
"Dregon is our younger brother, we promise to always be there for him since the 'incident', we need to show him we are still his brothers, no matter what" Viserys said, missing the times he would read with his younger brother about Valyria and other times they were together.
Daemon looked down as well, Dregon always strived to fight, Daemon saw he wouldn't let others put him down despite his missing limb or his fear, Daemon admired that drive and helped his younger brother in training.
"And do you have any idea on how to reach him?" Daemon asked, looking at him.
"Corlys spoke of Dregon's ships in Bravos, I trust him to send the letter quickly" Viserys replied, but Daemon shakes his head.
"Leave it to me. I can reach him faster," Daemon spoke up. And Viserys turned to face him once more. His brother stared at him for some time.
"Dregon needs his family now more than ever, I'll get to him faster than the Seasnake can" Daemon said, Viserys thought about it for a moment and nodded.
"Why is he in Bravos, I heard he was in Pentos" Daemon asked, while not in contact with his brother, still vaguely aware of him.
"Corly speaks of Dregon resupplying there, he speaks of Dregon hunting another wild dragon" Viserys said gravely,
"Which one?" Daemon asked, hearing Viserys' tune.
"The most dangerous one, the one that killed Aunt Princess Gael, that nearly killed you, the most dangerous dragon since Cannibal" Visery speaks in fear, Daemon goes pale.
Daemon Targeyen loved dragons, what Targeryen didn't, he never feared them, respected them but never feared them.
But this one wild dragon was different, one that sought to destroy all in his way, burning everything in its path and eating whoever it wanted. Daemon nearly got killed with Caraxes needing to heal after suffering from fighting this wild dragon.
This wild dragon is called the Maneater, a large dragon known to eat only man and destroy all he creates.
And if rumours are true, Maneater is the same dragon that took Dregon's hand as an infant.
Started watching House of the Dragon, love it, game of thrones like it should have been. Started reading a few fanfics about it, this one was inspired by A tales of dragons by ArezaR and The Healer Prince by Drkest, most are either another brother or someone else on either side of the Greens or Blacks. Either they have a dragon or a new side to the story. But I didn't want to do that, this one I want to try something different, a Targaryen that hates dragons.
This is a How to train your dragon/House of the Dragon crossover, with this OC basic on Drago from the second one, a Targaryen who lost his hand to a dragon as an infant, grow to hate them and was banished for it, now has a fleet and army of dragon slaying warriors.
Featuring other HTTYD dragons based on normal dragons in the HOTD world, names and features would change to fit the world.
Which side would Dregon fight for and how would it change the House of the Dragon, leave your reviews and thoughts
