Chapter 1:
A/N: This story is inspired by a light Novel called the Advent of the Archmage. Great story, highly recommended. Though not entirely, there will be some changes. It is based entirely in the Harry Potter Universe. Only the MC will be from the other world.
Disclaimer: J.K. Rowling owns Harry Potter. I'm just a fan.
Please Enjoy.
Earth is a land in which technology took precedence. Every advancement, big and small, was due to science and technology. In the land of Firuman however, Magic was its main tool. Science, medicine, technology, philosophy all were linked with the mystic arts. Although not all were capable of magic, those who were are usually always highly revered. To the commoners magicians were the elite of society, scholars always in search of the truth. Unlike Earth, Firuman did not seclude their magicians. They were living in harmony with the non-magic users.
Firuman was home to numerous sentient beings. The most predominant one being the Human race, though it is also by far the youngest. The High Elves, widely considered as the most magically advanced race. The Beastman, the best warriors in the land. The dwarves, the most magical technologically advanced. The Dragons, the oldest race, were considered the protectors of the realm and the keepers of balance. The Dark Elves, similar to the High Elves but they dabble in dark magic. Finally the Demons. Beings not of this realm, that appear for the sole purpose of destruction and chaos, usually summoned by the Dark Elves.
The magicians of Firuman abide by a ranking system. From the lowest level magicians, level 0, to the highest level magicians, level 9. However, beyond level 9 there comes the legendary level 10. Not many achieve the legendary realm. Also referred to as Archmages. It is so rare in fact that in Firumans history only 15 people had attained the level. 5 of which were currently alive. Attaining the level extends your life to 600 years. And the youngest to have attained the realm was said to be 100 years of age. They were the youngest before the birth of one Link Morani. The genius Magician.
He rose through the ranks quickly, attaining the legendary realm by the age of 20. He did not stop there, however. He continued his research, coupled with his intelligence, to understand the laws of his universe. He understood the laws of Time, Space, Light, and Fire. He accumulated so much knowledge and power in 5 years, that he became the head of the legendary magicians due to his innovation, insight, and power. His name was known everywhere, even the commoners whispered his name in awe. He was awarded a title by the Monarch of the land, due to his massive contribution to humanity and his war on darkness. Mainly the protection of all beings from the Demons and the Dark Elves.
His name, also known as the Ferde Lord, was whispered in both fear and awe by allies and enemies alike. He was the leading expert on enchanting having created numerous artefacts for the betterment of mankind, and the advancement of their military power. While not really adept at political maneuvering, Link is the second most influential person after the king himself. Though he prefers to be the hammer of justice rather than a politician. So he leaves all those things to the king and other lords. Although the land and title are hereditary, Link has not taken a bride as he is in no rush. He can always look into it in the future. Not that there aren't countless women vying or his attention.
The main difference between an ordinary Magician and a Legendary Magician is the comprehension and utilisation of the laws of the universe. Rendering the utilisation of spells with law much more efficient, powerful, and direct. There is no loss of magical power trying to manipulate the realm around you to the benefits of the spell. The laws of the realm are all encompassing, they make up the very core of the realm. Therefore any spell cast with the laws of the realm, would become as though the realm itself was changed, possibly altering the new reality into permanence.
Link is also the foremost figure regarding enchantment. A form of magic which creates magical artefacts. From wands and weapons to shields and transport. All could be accomplished with the artform.
Currently he is dabbling in a space-time spell/enchantment that would allow transportation of massive amount of people and goods efficiently with no threat of bandits or interference of nature. Basically a widespread, widely used teleportation.
Should he succeed the trade commute of the kingdom would skyrocket. The economy would therefore increase in value and power. Which would eventually lead to higher standards of living for the people. They would become a true economic superpower.
It was a very delicate process, as Link is manipulating the very laws of the realm, in order to create the spell. The slightest if mishaps, or the tiniest of interference would lead to a destabilised spell, which would implode within itself, and the caster being in close proximity would also be within the blast radius.
Unfortunately, as things are wont to happen in crucial times, an occurrence did happen. While concentrating on his work, Link sensed a powerful Demon within his domain and was distracted from his work for a second. By the time he realised the spell was destabilising, it was too late.
The world of Firuman would mourn the loss of the genius magician.
Another shall celebrate his birth.
The sound of screaming brought him out of darkness. When the world was blurring out of the encompassing shadows, all he saw was white walls similar to the churches hallowed halls but less grand. It was a small room, filled with people creating a cacophony heard only in taverns or markets. Bright lights were blinding, the smells were unlike any he had ever smelt. Where was he, was the predominant thought Link had. Slowly, his senses came into focus with a giant woman holding him. No, that's not right, he was the small one. A man came into the right side of the woman, leaning over her to peer at him.
"He's perfect" whispered the man, smiling softly.
'Of course I am, I'm Link Morani. The Ferde Lord. The most powerful magician in Firuman' Link tried to speak, but all that came was an almost silent moan, confusing the young man.
"What are we going to name him?" asked the woman, gazing at him with smiling eyes intently. As though to commit his form to memory.
"I was thinking Link" muttered the Man.
"You're such a nerd" chuckled the woman.
"I'm a dork, know the difference woman"
She just continued snickering at the man's antics. Then gazed back at him, smiling again.
"Link is perfect"
Grinning broadly the man carried Link up in his arms
"Welcome to the world, Link Granger"
It suddenly clicked, with mounting horror Link realised he had been reborn. So he did the only thing a baby could do. He cried. For a while.
A week had passed since he realised he was a babe. He took the week to confirm that it was not an illusion, either spell, enchantment nor alchemy. Unfortunately it was not. He really was a newborn. Fantastic.
He started to take notice of the world around him. Really focus on it for the first time in a week. He was blown away by what he saw. Magic was practically nonexistent for one, he could hardly feel it in the air, at least it was here. Magic was still strong, just concentrated in certain places rather than all encompassing. However he could clearly feel magic within him. Nowhere near the level of power he had before, but it was still there. Thank magic for small mercies.
The technology around him was powered not through magic, but something else. It was baffling. Although he can't interact with his surroundings yet, he was drawn in by the new way of life.
Time flowed, and before he knew it, a year passed by.
Doctors Dan and Emma Granger were extremely delighted by their son. He was cute, quite for a lot of the time, and he hardly ever woke them up in the middle of the night. The dreaded stories they heard were practically non-existent with their son. Then he started walking at 10 months old, baby speak a month before and full blown sentences a month after. They realised that they had a really smart kid if not a genius in their hand. Nothing could have delighted them more. Link was their pride and joy, and the topic they braged the most of their dentist patients and friends.
Link had examined himself at least once a month. For one he had realised that he had regressed to a level 1 magician which, while impressive for a babe of one year, was abysmal to the former Archmage. He also examined the world around him, it had taken him half a year to confirm that he was in an entirely different world than his own, and another half a year to accept his fate.
Link, now two, has just learned about this world's religions, and the one his family follows. He accompanied them to the temple, or church as they call it here. Link believed in gods. After all in his old world gods were merely the legendary mages that concentrated on a single law enough to embody said law. They transcend level 10, becoming the 'god level'. However the gods mentioned were merely legends, as none had transcended in more than 5 millennials. It is more probable than not that gods were formed by the vast void embodying a law. Never were they mortal first. But born sentient laws. The main Religion in Firuman followed the lord of the light. The priests that follow the god are blessed with the ability to heal all wounds, they are leveled the same as magicians, though their level is merely a representative of the amount of healing they could do, and not as versatile as the magicians themselves.
Link learned he was an Anglican Christian, he didn't quite understand the schism within christianity yet. Though that didn't bother him, he was and always will be a magician first. It didn't matter what god was prevalent, within the realm, humans shall reign supreme. That has always been his belief, which put him at odds with the other species sometimes. It wasn't that he was discriminating against the other races, but he wished for the humans to no longer be considered second class due to the youth of their species. He almost single handedly brought up the human race in equal standing with the dragons, almost reigning supreme. He had formed friendships and alliances with the other races, he doesn't discriminate against them and treats them equal to humans as individuals. But as is most often the case, the state and the personal are two different concepts and cannot interfere with each other.
At age three, Link finally understood the language enough to read, he had understood the English language orally, now he could read and write. His parents were already seeing the signs of a genius level human. Their son was a wunderkind. They were beyond thrilled.
While reading he was surprised with the lack of magical knowledge within the world. How had they developed so much with no magic?
'Is it possible they can't control magic in this realm?' he mused, but immediately rejected the notion. 'Impossible, otherwise I won't be able to retain my magical core, as well as sense the ambient magic around.'
While confused, Link was a scholar. He was excited to learn how this new realm operated.
At four, Link attended school. He found the process… profoundly boring. While the knowledge was interesting, and was more often than not found with a book in his hand reading, the speed at which the school progressed was dreadfully slow.
It was a blessing in disguise, as it allowed him to reflect on why his manipulation of the laws were not working. The answer was agonisingly obvious that he could not believe it took him so long to realise the problem. This realm was different from his realm, therefore the laws that govern it are obviously different as well. In simple terms, this planet, Earth, was different from the red planet, Mars. The difference in size, density, mass and volume ensure that time passes slower on earth than in mars, gravity is also stronger on the blue planet. With differences this glaring with two planets of the same solar system, how could two realms galaxies apart be any different? Although there are many similarities, it was enough of a difference for the laws to be resistant to manipulation.
With the main issue discovered, Link theorised that in order to regain his former might, he must first understand the magic of this realm first. It proved to be more difficult than anticipated. He had no starting point in this realm, no matter how much he searched he couldn't find a clue towards any magical texts. All magic in this realm seems to be labeled as fiction. Unfortunately.
Link is now 10 years old, turning 11 in a few months by september. He had just finished high school, graduating at the top of his class. His parents were very proud. They had attended his graduation ceremony, he had never seen them so happy before. It had instilled a sense of pride even if the school was no problem for the former Archmage. He could have been done much earlier, but he was distracted with his magic situation.
Being the boy genius he was, Link didn't have any friends. He didn't mind. He believed there is magic somewhere in this realm, and that was where he belongs. With the apparent divide between the magic world and the non-magic world, he didn't want to have anything keeping him back. Besides his new parents that is. He's grown fond of them.
Unfortunately, he hasn't made any significant progress in understanding the laws of this world, as he has yet to understand the magic of this world. However, progress was made nonetheless. He was able recreate a few level 0 spells from his old realm, and his core capacity has increased to level 3 standards. Unfortunately the only way to truly increase your magic is constant use, and for that he needs spells.
While he was musing on how to get in contact with the magical world, he was distracted by a knock to his room's door. His father called out to him:
"Link, there is some lady downstairs. She introduced herself as Professor McGonagall. Said she's here to see you. I think she's here to scout you for a college, she seems professional enough."
Dan was excited, his ten year old is already being chased by universities. He can hardly contain his pride and joy when he looks at his son.
"Sure Dad, let me wear something presentable" Link replied, already changing into a shirt with trousers.
Soon the duo descended the stairs, coming into the living room where the professor was conversing lightly with his mother. What shocked Link was the feeling of magic emanating out of the woman. He guesses she's a Level 6 magician. A pretty high leveled witch. He suppresses his excitement, he shouldn't know about magic after all.
"Good morning, my name is Link Granger," he said, offering his arm out for a handshake. "What university are you from?"
"Good morning, young man" responded McGonagall, a little bewildered. "Why, may I ask, do you presume that I am from a university?"
"I graduated highschool just last month, I am looking for a university to go to. Isn't that why you are here?" he asked feigning confusion. She looked both surprised and impressed with his achievement.
"I'm afraid not, Mr. Granger. I am here as a representative from a special school for the gifted" she replied
"I'm sorry to interrupt, but my son just finished school" interrupted Emma "He has no need to go to school again"
"Indeed, he doesn't Mrs. Granger"
"Docter, my husband and I are both doctors" she interrupted again "sorry I don't wish to be rude, but we have both worked hard for our position"
"Quite alright Dr. Granger. As I was saying, this school is not for the ordinarily gifted but the extraordinarily gifted. In other words it's a school of witchcraft and wizardry, and we train children in the utilisation of the magic around us and within them."
There was a bit of silence, so as to absorb what she was saying. When the two parents finally understood what she meant, Dan was understandably upset. She was making fun of them, and making light of his son. He will not have that.
"I thank you Madam not to make fun of our intelligence, and ask you to please allow us to escort you out of our home" Dan said, sternly and severely.
"I understand your skepticism, but I assure you that magic is real" replied McGonagall calmly "Allow me to demonstrate" she continued while whipping out a long polished stick, Link immediately recognised it as a wand. He observed the quality of the wand, he was an enchanter and had created quite a few wands afterall. Magical equipment was usually classified under 5 different classes. Poor, Good, Excellent, Epic and Legendary. Obviously the last one was only able to be used by a legendary magician. Epic being the best quality any Level 9 and below could ever hope to own. He judged hers to be of Excellent quality, bordering on Epic. What surprised him is the method it was made. Unlike his world which utilised special metals and runes to get the quality, it seems they use magical wood and animal components. Interesting.
Before the Granger parents could comment, the Professor waved her wand once and transfigured the coffee table into a pig, then back again. Shocking the parents to wide eyed amazement. Link was also amazed, as that was a branch of magic he hadn't seen before. It seemed very versatile. He was excited to learn all that he could.
Now more amenable to the idea of Magic, the Parents and Link discussed with the Professor what the curriculum would be, the cost of the equipment and the books, and the cost of the school year. They would need 1000 Galleons for each school year which is approximately 5000 pounds, and 100 Galleons for supplies which is approximately 500 pounds. There is ofcourse a payment plan, in which anyone could pay in installments. They also discussed the 3 different coins used. Knuts, the smallest denomination, are bronze coins. Sickles are silver coins, and finally Galleons are gold coins. Its 29 Knuts to a Sickle and 17 Sickles to a Galleon.
The money system seemed a bit odd to the Granger family, as they couldn't understand why they had made such a complicated exchange rate. Why couldn't they have done them similar to the non-magical world, with each denomination is within a factor of 10. Like 100 pence for a Pound.
With urging from their son, who seemed to really want to attend, if the gleam in his eyes was anything to go by, agreed to follow the professor to what she called Diagon Alley in order to get the needed equipment and books for the school year. Dan and Emma hoped that this new world would allow their son to open up to others, and hopefully to make a friend or two in his time there.
Awe and wonder are all that could be seen on Dan and Emmas faces as they were introduced to Diagon Alley for the first time. They were bewildered when the professor brought them to a seemingly normal street in London, only to then see an old dingy looking tavern. How had they not seen it before? Once inside what is called 'The Leaky Cauldron', they were a bit underwhelmed at the old looking, dirty little place. The patrons weren't much better to look at either. They became bewildered when they followed the professor outside to a dirty alley way. However, they were blown away when, with a few taps of her wand, the Professor introduced them to the largest magical market in all of the United Kingdom.
Link on the other hand, while not as starstruck as his parents, was excited at all the marvelous ways magic was used. These magicals had some ingenious ways to cover their existence from their non-magical counterpart. His inner scholar was practically drooling at the thought of researching all there is to know about this fantastical side. Although he doesn't know the spells used, he is experienced enough to extrapolate their uses and their intent.
McGonagall, visibly amused by their reaction if the slight quirk of her lips is considered visible, leads the family towards a massive white building. While getting in, the parents were surprised with the Goblin race, Link was intrigued. 'It seems there are other sentient races in this world too. However, it seems the Humans reign supreme.' he thought to himself.
Once inside, they saw how unfriendly the Goblins were, to Links hidden ire (The honor of an archmage is not to be tarnished after all). They exchanged 500 pounds for 100 Galleons, and organised a full payment of 5,000 pounds for the entire school year, transferred directly to the Hogwarts coffers.
They first bought the Trunk (Expanded to hold a large amount, not the best they had but was enough for now) as well as a bag to hold his books for easier commute between classes. The clothes came next, buying enough for a full week before needing to do laundry. Something the Professor explained was attended to by the House Elves of Hogwarts, also explaining what House Elves were. (Link had to smother a laugh that bubbled deep within him, 'Oh how the High Elves would react when they find that their counterparts were nothing more than servants to the Humans!').
They got his equipment, potions ingredients and all the rest. Leaving him with getting a wand and books.
"Let's get the wand first" suggested Link "That way I have more time to browse the books I need and want to get"
McGonagall knew he was smart, his behaviour all but screamed it. Hardly has she come across such a mature 10/11 year old. This statement all but announced that he was a Ravenclaw in the making.
Ollivanders shop was a dingy little thing with only a crooked sign hanging on top. They were a bit surprised to see how long the business was open, but the shop did look as though it hadn't been renovated in more than a thousand years. Link however could feel the magic hovering in the air around the shop. As a Master Enchanter and an accomplished Alchemist, Link was familiar with the way the magic clung to the area. It was a result of the multiple magical components that were fused, unfused and combined. Creating a sort of magical curtain around the area. His tower was the same, but with a bigger concentration (His spells and creations were of a higher quality and order than the common man could accomplish).
The quartet entered the shop, three of them not knowing what to expect. The three adults jumped a little (though McGonagall was hardly noticeable) when an old guy suddenly popped up from one of the shadowy areas. Link had sensed him just as he had arrived.
"Good afternoon Minerva, how's your wand treating you? 9½ inches long, fir wood, and dragon heartstring core I believe." whispered the old guy.
"Good afternoon Ollivander" said McGonagall, her lips a thin line expressing her displeasure at being snuck upon by the wand maker "Its as great as always, thank you"
It was only then that the old guy, now known as Olivander, acknowledged the Granger trio. He smiles at them.
"I remember every wand I ever crafted, and every wand I sold and to whom. My name is Garick Olivander, I am, if you haven't already guessed, a wand maker. Now, let's see what wand will choose this young man. What's your name?"
Link steps forward calmly, extends his arm in greeting saying:
"Link Granger. What do you mean the wand chooses the wizard?"
He was a bit confused by this, since most magicians could use any wand. Though some are more compatible with others, it isn't anything significant. Moreover, after level 3 all magicians get a custom made wand for their unique style of magic. He is curious to see the difference between the two realms.
"You see, Mr. Granger, every wand in here uses a combination of a powerful magical core; such as Unicorn's hair, Phoenix tail feathers, and Dragon Heartstrings; encased within a wooden shell; just as important in the molding of the wand as the cores are. Every wand is therefore unique in its own way, just as no two Unicorns are the same, neither are two trees the same. They are almost sentient in their way of interacting with magic folk. Each wand would choose a unique witch or wizard, and no other wand would work quite as well."
The part about the Dragon heartstrings was a bit surprising to Link. In his old world, Dragons were sentient beings capable of thought, emotion and speech. To think they were reduced to mere ingredients for alchemy and enchanting was a morbid thought. He decided to inquire more information after he got his wand.
"I see, but what about custom made wands?"
"They are possible, however, as I tend to create multiple wands a month, it is likely that the custom wand you wanted was already created somewhere here within my collection."
"Makes sense"
"Now without further ado, which is your wand arm?"
"I'm ambidextrous"
"Interesting, well both arms forward"
Olivander flicked his wand, and all of a sudden a measuring tape flew towards Link and started taking all sorts of measurements. From his height and width to the length between nostrils. Startling the parents. All the while, Olivander went through multiple columns taking a few boxes seemingly at random, but more than likely due to the information he received from the tape. He placed the wands at the table in front of the four.
"Try this one, Unicorn hair and birch, 9 inches" he said pointing to the one on the right.
Link lifted it, and examined the wand. 'Hmm, that's odd. The wands here are far more selective than the ones in my world. They really do choose a single person to use them. How fascinating.'
He gave it a wave with no reaction.
"No, no, try this; pheonix feather and vinewood, 13 inches"
This time there was a burst of fire that went out of the wand, though it was still not right entirely.
"Hmmm, not quite but close. Let's try a different wood with Phoenix feather" muttered Olivander. "How about this? Phoenix feather with birch, 12 inches"
Link gave this a wave, and promptly caused an explosion. Which he apologised for, but was waved off that it wasn't a problem.
"Then Vinewood it is" said Olivander happily. "Let's try this, Vine wood and Dragon Heartstring of a particularly powerful Hunguarian Horntail, 10 and a half inches"
"Alright, before I try that. Are Dragons sentient? Did you kill an intelligent creature for a wand?" asked Link, while he has killed before (Dragons included) it was never for a mundane reason such as getting ingredients. So he wished to first learn if the Dragons here are the same as his realm, second to see the morality of this magical realm. So that he may adapt a similar thought process.
The two magical adults were a bit surprised, but they answered easily.
"No a dragon is not sentient. It is merely a really powerful magical beast" answered McGonagall, seemingly appalled by the mere notion of killing a sentient being.
"Thank you for enlightening me" said Link, getting the answers for both his questions. One the dragons here were mere beasts no different than a dog or a cat, just more powerful. Two it seems this realm has much higher morales than his realm, both the magical and non-magical seem to have a strong aversion to killing and murder. Of Course with some exceptions. Not to say that his world was lawless, but the idea of death is much more accepted among the people, granted there was a constant war going on between the forces of light and the forces of darkness. It wasn't until Link was 24 that he was able to stop the war almost permanently, as he had reduced the forces of darkness by quite a large number, it would take them decades before they recovered. They would have been completely exterminated had Link stayed another 5 years.
With that settled, Link took the wand. Before he even needed to wave, the entire room lit up in a golden light with a gust of wind that originated from within Link.
"...That was unexpected. We can expect great things from you Mr. Granger, great things indeed" commented Olivander, an eerie twinkle in his eyes as he looked at the young man.
"Why? What happened?" asked Emma Granger
"That was one of the strongest reactions to obtaining a wand I've seen from a child, and I've seen quite a few having introduced countless muggleborns to the wizarding world. Your son is quite powerful" explained McGonagall.
The Granger parents are quite pleased with how exceptional their son was. Even in a different world he shines.
Meanwhile, Link is very surprised with the feel. Although the wand was much less powerful than his previous wand it is very compatible with the current him. 'Interesting, the fact that the components to the wand were part of living creatures, or plants, makes the connection that much more compatible than the wands of my old world. This would need further investigation when I plan to create my own wand. For now this would suffice, at least until I become level 7' thought Link, smiling.
"Thank you for the wand sir" said Link, still smiling "how much would that be?"
"7 Galeons for the wand, add 10 sicles and I'll throw in a wand polishing kit"
"Deal"
They paid the man and left the shop.
All that was left now was the bookstore. Time for Link to get his hands on the magical knowledge of this realm. His father was dreading the amount he would have to carry once they were done from there, both his parents were interested in reading about this world.
McGonagall first made sure that all the required books for this year were accounted for, then she handed the boy his Hogwarts Express ticket, then explained how to get on the train.
"Remember, all you have to do is walk straight through the wall between platform 9 and 10 in Kings Cross"
"Thank you Professor. I look forward to learning under you in Hogwarts" said Link, politely.
"And I you, Mr. Granger. Farewell" she intoned, before turning and leaving.
Now that the Granger family was alone, they took their time browsing the bookstore. Dan got books on its history, Emma on politics, Link got… well he got a lot of books from many different areas. He got one on magical Theory, on mind magic, Wizarding etiket and others. One such book, titled '128 common household spells: a must have for any magical family', intrigued him. Magic in his old world was more attuned towards battle than they were for mundane effects. This is a nice change of pace and an interesting branch in using magic.
With that done, the trio took their leave and returned home. There was 1 month before his school started, and he was determined to have read each and every one of these books.
A/N: I hope you enjoy this. Tell me what you think.
I plan on only having 2 gender-bender characters in this story. One is obviously Hermione, which serves as the body of the main character. The other is Harry, becoming Rose. It's going to be a LinkxRose pairing. Open for the other pairings. Though that won't happen until after or during year three.
In the Next chapter, Link will make it to Hogwarts and we see what level magicians the magical folk of Britain are at.
Thank you
