Academy City was lost.
It had happened too suddenly as well. Just one day beforehand, the world's greatest magician- Aleister Crowley- had almost completed his lifelong goal: to destroy the entire existence of magic in the world.
However, the magician was stopped through an intervention by Kamijou Touma- the infamous wielder of Imagine Breaker. Together with Misaka Mikoto and Reading Thoth 78 (A.K.A Mina Mathers), the trio broke through the Windowless Building, defeated Aleister, and thus prevented the destruction of every single phase in existence.
But such a situation had caused an entire slew of different problems. The direst of them all was the sudden appearance of the 'great demon from the Sephiroth'- Coronzon. The demon had bid her time by pretending to be Laura Stuart- The Archbishop of Necessarius, in order to find the perfect opportunity to strike at Aleister. It was with this defeat that she decided now was the time to finish off the magician.
"Now I can finally cut all ties with Mathers. I can say goodbye to that damned contract! I have upheld my end of the deal. Can I not now define myself as I wish?"
While the great demon was gloating over her victory in the form of the magician's 'possessed' second daughter, something strange was also occurring throughout the world. In an act of desperation, Crowley had bounded more than one billion alternate selves to his body. Now that he was out of his life-support system, these alternative selves, 'Crowley Hazards,' had started to manifest across the globe in an apparent attack on the British Commonwealth.
The incident caught the ears of Coronzon in real-time. The demon was distracted just enough for a small witch girl- now possessing the consciousness of the real Aleister Crowley- to escape with Touma. Aleister was also able to launch the Windowless Building with the demon inside all the way to space.
Of course, the great demon would have easily escaped the building had it not been for the reappearance of the angel Aiwass. Despite knowing that he would eventually lose to the demon, Aiwass had managed to trick Coronzon into turning around the Windowless building onto Academy City. This action caused her to shift into the 'New World' to be attacked by the residing Magic Gods.
One would have been forgiven for thinking the world was now saved from that disaster. The only thing left to do was recontain the Crowley Hazards, and the situation would have been all but wrapped up.
But the good news would barely last for a single day. During that 24-hour leeway, Coronzon had managed to fight her way out of the New World, dragging two magic gods with her.
Once again, Coronzon was a significant threat to the city and the entire world as well.
As such, it was decided that the evacuation of the city was of immediate priority. Across the city, the 2.3 million students, parents, and researchers were whisked away to safer places across the globe.
In the meantime, a quickly hasten sealing spell – The Banner of The West – was implanted to trap the demon within the confines of the city. The spell wouldn't be able to hold up forever, but there was hope that the spell would buy just enough time for Aleister to find the demon's Achilles Heel in Britannia. In turn, the magician also brought an impressive band of magicians and espers to accompany him on the journey.
As of now, it seemed as if Aleister's new plan would undoubtedly succeed. He had the power and likely the time needed to finally defeat Coronzon and free his daughter from the demon's possession.
However, two very different but also oddly similar things would play major wretches against his goals.
First, he had only as much time as the 'Banner of the West' could last. Not one second more. The moment the sealing spell dissipated; the demon would be able to pinpoint Aleister's location before barreling down on the magician like a nuclear missile.
And secondly, despite the magician's best protests, a certain Level 5 had been adamant about staying behind…
If Accelerator had a nickel for each time the city was deserted due to magical forces, he would have two nickels. Not a lot of money, but it was weird that such a situation had occurred twice.
The first-ranked esper of Academy City was going through a slurry of emotions- none of them positive. It had only been a day since the incident with the Windowless Building, but what also happened following that mishap had left him in a terrible mood.
An encounter with a weird British cat woman, the subsequent evaluation of the entire city, and his final argument with Aleister Crowley.
All three situations had made him felt more agitated and tired, and Accelerator wasn't too keen on the fact that Aleister was the direct reason for these emotions.
At the very least, his encounter with Mina Mathers had given him a small consolation prize. The grimoire had explained to him a lot about Aleister, Coronzon, and magic in general. Still, it would have been better for the boy had his ego not been bruised when the encounter first started out with a fight.
Why was he always meeting individuals that could somehow bypass his ability?
From what he learned from Mathers, him going against Coronzon was all but certain to be a suicide mission. Despite the boy's significant amount of power, he was outmatched in multiple aspects against the great demon. The plan as of now, was to simply prevent Coronzon from finding methods to break out of the sealing spell earlier.
It was with this knowledge that Aleister had pleaded with the boy to join his band on their way to England. However, Accelerator had had enough of the man's escapades. The Sister Experiment… His Wings… Phases…Aiwass, despite the boy having a direct line with the chairman of Academy City, Accelerator was constantly being kept in the dark by Aleister. The last time – having only occurred yesterday involved the seemingly indestructible windowless building crashing down on the city, which nearly caused the death of Last Order. The girl had only been able to escape from Ground Zero due to the boy being directly with her at the time.
While such a scenario might have come off as a good stroke of luck to another bystander, to the first-ranked, it was just another near incident that could have been entirely avoided had Aleister been more willing to share the plans of his constant scheming. There was only so much nonsense that the esper could take before finally putting his foot down.
As such, his actions were two-fold: mutiny against Aleister as well as to retaliate against this "Coronzon" who caused the accident in the first place.
He, along with Touma, were meant to play roles in the magician's 'plan', and while Touma might have been a little more willing to forgive the man by joining the band, if Aleister wasn't going to tell the albino about his plan and the boy's role in its entirely, then the magician could go take a long walk off a short pier.
"Use Kakine if you are really that desperate," Accelerator grumbled to the magician. "Isn't he supposed to be the backup plan?"
That put an end to the conversation. Finally realizing that the esper wasn't going to change his mind and that time was against the magician, Aleister left without saying another word.
Now, the first-ranked esper of Academy City was also feeling nervous (although it was an emotion he would never admit to). Despite the fact that the magician had finally relented and allowed him to stay, the boy's mind still wondered if he had made the right choice.
There was no turning back following this point. For all intent and purposes, he had defied the 'God' of Academy City, and unlike the other times, in which the esper would eventually come around to the magician's plans, he had managed to 'win' this time. Even if he would somehow survive his upcoming fight with Coronzon, he doubted that Aleister was ever going to forgive him for this act of insolence.
So, the boy decided to pay one final goodbye to the ship carrying Last Order to Alaska. As the boat drifted away from Tokyo Bay and out of his sight, the boy let out a small sigh.
Now was the time to fight.
Walking back to the completely evacuated city, Accelerator rubbed the back of his head a few times in annoyance. Ever since the day of Aleister's failed plan, a small voice in his head had started to talk back against his thoughts.
Surely, it was just simple a coincidence. If the voice was going to be his salvation or something that he was going to drag down to his grave, it didn't matter at this point. The boy had enough trouble on his plate. He didn't need to deal with any lingering doubts about his choices.
He made the right one. He had shaken off the shackles of Aleister Crowley and the city. He was no longer Aleister's main plan- his 'perfect weapon' against magic.
And after all, for perhaps the first time, this was truly his own choice.
This story was orginally supposed to be one very long chapter, but it got way to messy for me. As such, this is going to be split into twelve chapters with ten acts.
Anyways, as you can guess, it 'sort-of' an AU from NT19 onwards, and it's going to focus on Accelerator and Coronzon entirely.
Hope you enjoyed reading it. The next chapter should be posted around Friday-Saturday.
