Chapter 1

Steve boarded the plane and searched for his seat. He put his backpack in the overhead cabin and sat down. He looked out the window and started to reflect on these past ten years back on the island. Everything that has happened has shaped him into the man he is today, not just his time in the Navy. It was a surreal feeling leaving the island but he was ready to embark on his next adventure, even if it was only for a short time, he needed a change of pace. Danny's text snapped him out of this train of thought. Steve replied to Danny, "I miss you too, buddy". He turned off his phone and continued to gaze out the window of the plane. There was one thing left on his mind, one person.

"Is this seat taken?"

He instantly recognized that voice. He turned his head from the window to see her familiar face, standing right there in front of him. His heart started racing instantly, the same way it did when Lincoln mentioned her name earlier that week. "How can this be real? I was just thinking about her," Steve thought to himself. Steve hesitated when he said her name, "Catherine."

"Hey, Sailor."

It took a moment for Steve to process that she was really there, standing right in front of him. "So clearly I'm not hallucinating right now," Steve thought to himself.

"It was you?"

He realized that Daiyu Mei must have killed Lincoln's original contact.

"You cracked that cipher."

She smiled at him and nodded her head.

"Mmhmm. Lincoln, uh…. got a hold of me. Said you guys needed help. So yeah."

"He's a good man."

"Well, he must be. I mean, you gave him the keys to Danno's car."

"Well, I mean, we can't have Danny Williams drive his own car."

"Like he ever did."

Steve smiled at her comment. Unsure about Steve's reaction, Catherine stayed standing. She smiled when Steve said, "You gonna sit down?"

"Mmm."

Catherine, feeling more reassured, sat down and put her bag under the seat in front of her. Just as she settled in, the seat belt sign came on and they both buckled their seatbelts.

Steve looked out the window one more time then turned his head back to Catherine, gazing into her eyes. To reassure him that she was truly with him on whatever journey he decides to take, she asks, "You ready?"

Steve simply answered, "Yeah."

Steve reached out his hand and Catherine put hers on top of his.

They shared a smile and both instantly felt a sense of relief. She knew they could make it work this time, both away from the distractions that kept them apart all these years. They both had a lot more to talk about, but they had all the time in the world for themselves this time.

A few hours later…

There was still silence between them. Luckily for Steve, Catherine was leaning on him and taking a nap while her arms wrapped around his right arm. He used this time of silence to push away his pride and truly think about what the future may hold for them.

As Catherine started to wake up a little, Steve immediately turned his head to watch her. He admired her and really didn't believe he would ever be able to see her again. All he could see in her now is their future together. She is his life, peace, and happiness. No one could ever compare to Catherine and fill the hole in his heart. It has always been her, she was the one. She knew everything about him, inside and out. She was always there when he needed her no matter what, always there to fulfill his many favors over the years.

When he felt her arms slowly move away from his, he panicked and looked back at the window. Catherine stretched and leaned back on his shoulder. He turned back to her and saw that she was reaching her hand for his.

"How was your sleep?" Steve asked as he brushed a strand of hair away from her face with his left hand.

"Honestly, it was one of the best naps I've had in a long time."

"I'm glad you got some rest."

"Well, I had a comfortable pillow," Catherine said with a smile.

All of a sudden Steve says "I'm ready."

Catherine was shocked by what Steve had just said. Her eyes widened.

"Ready for what?"

"I am ready for what the future holds for us. Just like you told me last year, I am in this with you until the end."

Catherine was startled by what he was saying, especially considering the fact that she had just woken up.

"Um, Sailor… are you okay? I think you need some sleep."

The drink cart was coming and Steve knew what exactly to get for the both of them.

"Hi, what drink would you like?"

"We will both take the red wine."

Catherine thought to herself, "I am so confused by everything that is going on, but I have to say something… gah what to do Catherine?"

"Mmm, fancy choice, Sailor."

"I guess that's one way to reply… but he remembered that sunset date on the beach…" Catherine thought to herself.

Steve ripped part of his napkin to create a makeshift paper ring. He thought about it and knows that he wants to really propose to her when they get back to Hawaii, but for now, this has to do. Catherine was even more confused about what Steve was doing. When he finished making it, she realized what he was trying to do. Steve turned his head back to Catherine and gazed into her eyes.

"Catherine Rollins, would you still say yes to my proposal?"

Catherine looked away from Steve and covered her face to hide the tears. All she could think about was how romantic Steve is trying to be and how much they have changed. Catherine wiped the tears and looked back at Steve. Steve was getting very anxious by Catherine's reaction, he was worried she would say no, although this isn't his actual proposal, but he still needed an answer.

"Sailor, how could I ever say no to that? There's no other person I would ever say yes to."

Steve put his makeshift ring on Catherine's finger and kissed her on the lips. It felt right for the both of them, no awkwardness or anything, it felt normal.

"I love this ring, it's the most meaningful gift I've ever received from you!"

"Hey! I've given you other gifts that were more meaningful… like…"

Catherine interrupted Steve's train of thought. "I'm just kidding, Sailor! This ring is truly the most beautiful gift I've ever received."

"You'll be getting the real ring and proposal when we get back."

"Mmm Sailor, I didn't know you could be so romantic."

Steve picked up his cup of wine and Catherine did the same.

"Cheers to the future and the next chapter of our lives."

"And new beginnings."

They both finished their drinks and leaned back on each other with their hands intertwined. There were still a couple more hours to go so they went to sleep.

Hours later, they finally arrived at their destination.

"Finally here."

"I'm glad you're here with me, Cath."

"Me too, Sailor."

Where did Steve and Catherine fly to?

Is Catherine really here to stay?
