Chapter 1
"C'mon, Onii-chan, this way!"
"Yeah…"
A joyful and content expression adorned Raiha's face as she entered the department store. It was a rare treat for her to visit such a place, as their family was struggling financially and rarely shopped at expensive department stores like this. Fuutaro could not help but smile at the sight of his little sister's excitement, feeling a sense of happiness and relief knowing that she was enjoying herself despite their difficult situation.
This department was familiar to Fuutaro, as he had visited it a couple months earlier with Ichika. He had chosen this particular store because of the high-quality clothing it offered. Although the prices were steep, Fuutaro had saved up some money from his tutoring salary and had some funds in his savings to buy a few clothing.
Today was Sunday, so he used this day off to do some clothes shopping. Fuutaro planned on getting some new clothing for the school trip and there were only two days left before the trip started.
Entering the clothing area, Fuutaro and Raiha headed to the men's clothing section to browse some garments for him. They walked around, searching for clothes that were not too expensive but still of good quality.
"How about this shirt, Onii-chan?" Raiha asked, showing Fuutaro a shirt she had picked out.
"It looks okay, although I'm not a fan of the design and fabric," Fuutaro said as he examined the shirt.
"In that case, how about this one? It's simple and doesn't have much of a pattern." Raiha picked out another shirt, a plain black t-shirt with a sports company logo on the left side of the chest and a white line on the hip area.
"Hmm… I suppose that's alright." Fuutaro looked at the black t-shirt and nodded. "I'll take it. Put it in the basket, Raiha."
"Okay! Now let's look for a jacket or sweater for you, Onii-chan! You've been wearing that same gray sweater for far too long!" Raiha put the shirt in the shopping basket and headed towards the jacket and sweater section.
"Hey, do I really have to? That gray sweater is really comfortable and still wearable to this day." Fuutaro chuckled and followed his little sister.
"Of course you do! You need more options for jackets and sweaters," she replied, beaming at Fuutaro. "If I recall correctly, you only have two jackets and one sweater. The first jacket is that green one you bought with Itsuki-san last year, and the second one is the navy-blue jacket that Ichika-san got for you."
Raiha's mention of Ichika's name made something click in Fuutaro's head, causing him to suddenly stop in place. He closed his eyes and crossed his arms, trying to recall what it was about Ichika that had slipped his mind. After a few moments of intense recollection, a realization finally dawned on him. He remembered that he had offered to take Ichika with him clothes shopping before the school trip.
"If you're planning on going clothes shopping, don't forget to ask me to come along, okay? You really need some advice on fashion choices, considering how bland your style is."
"Yeah, I've been thinking of doing some clothes shopping before the school trip. How about you come along with me?" Fuutaro responded, offering her to join him someday.
"Heh, is that so? Then don't forget to ask me on that day, okay?" Ichika replied with a grin, winking at the end of her sentence.
As Fuutaro remembered this, he slapped his forehead out of reflex, muttering to himself that he had completely forgotten about their arrangement. He took out his phone from his pocket and looked at Ichika's name in his contact list, debating whether to call her now or if it was too late to ask.
"Damn… I totally forgot about that…"
"Should I call her now…?"
"Or is it already too late…?"
"I can imagine her irritated voice on the call if I told her I forgot…"
Raiha noticed her big brother's sudden change in behavior and walked over to check on him. She could see the confusion and worry etched on his face. "Onii-chan, what's wrong? You're acting weird," she asked, concerned.
"Hmm? Ahh, it's nothing," Fuutaro replied, snapping back to reality at the sound of her voice. "I just remembered that I once offered Ichika to come clothes shopping with me for fashion advice, but I totally forgot to ask her to come along." He put his phone back in his pocket, feeling embarrassed about his forgetfulness.
"Ichika-san, huh?" Raiha mumbled after hearing his big brother. "Well… Before we go, I called Itsuki-san to come with us. She should arrive here in any moment now."
Fuutaro was surprised by this news. "Itsuki, you say? Then…" he trailed off, unsure of how to react.
"That is right, Uesugi-kun. Raiha-chan called me an hour ago and asked me to accompany you shopping."
"Huh?! That voice... Could it be...?" Fuutaro got startled again after hearing a familiar voice he always heard. He turned around to see the source of the voice.
As Fuutaro turned around, he saw two familiar figures standing not far from him. It was just as Raiha had said, Itsuki had arrived, accompanied by the sister that Fuutaro had just been thinking of. His eyes met with the eldest of the quintuplets, and he could see that she was visibly annoyed. Fuutaro could immediately guess the reason - he had forgotten to invite her for the clothes shopping. He smirked to himself, feeling a slight tinge of nervousness as the two sisters walked towards him.
"Fuutaro-kun, you once promised to invite me for clothes shopping, didn't you? Don't tell me you forgot," Ichika's voice was tinged with annoyance, and she was still frowning as she looked at Fuutaro. "You've disappointed onee-san, you know that? Hmph..." She turned her head away from him with a pout.
"Y-yeah, my bad. I totally forgot about it," Fuutaro said, feeling a bit panicked before regaining his composure. "I meant to call you once I remembered, but Raiha said she had already called Itsuki, so I figured you'd come with her since you five usually stick together."
"Uesugi-kun, it just so happened that Ichika was feeling bored at home and wanted to come with me," Itsuki interjected, crossing her arms. "But when she heard that I was coming to meet you, she got upset because you had promised to take her along for clothes shopping before the school trip. It seems your delicacy towards women is still lacking, huh?" She shook her head, looking a little disappointed with their tutor's insensitivity.
"*sigh* Yeah, yeah… My apologies, Ichika," Fuutaro sighed, feeling guilty for forgetting.
"Apology accepted," Ichika said, her frown slowly turning into a more cheerful expression. "Just don't forget next time, okay?"
"Got it," Fuutaro nodded, and as he looked at the two sisters, he realized that the other three quintuplets were missing. "Hey, where are the other three? Are they not coming?"
"No, they have other things to do," Itsuki explained. "Nino is out with her friends, Miku is working a shift until evening, and Yotsuba is helping her sports club teammates with an exhibition match."
"Hmm... Is that so? Then, I guess it's fine, remembering last year's shopping with you four was kind of unpleasant," Fuutaro said.
"Unpleasant…? What do you mean, Fuutaro-kun?" Ichika wondered, curious about his previous shopping experience with her sisters.
"You see... Your sisters made me try all kinds of weird, silly clothing. Even the staff at that place were staring at me weirdly," Fuutaro explained, feeling a bit embarrassed as he remembered their antics from the previous year. "Itsuki right here, she made me try some kind of rocker or biker type of clothing because she thought it would look manly on me for the last year's school trip."
"But… you looked more manly with that clothing," Itsuki chimed in, putting her fingers to her chin and thinking back to Fuutaro's outfit. "Since I did not know much about men's clothing, I thought that clothing would look manly on you from my perspective."
"There's definitely something wrong with your idea of manliness, you know that?" Fuutaro stated, showing an unimpressed face from hearing her reason. "Good thing Nino picked something more reasonable back then. With Ichika here, her men's fashion sense is much better than you, Miku, and Yotsuba combined."
"Huh? That is rude to say, you know that?!" Itsuki yelled, feeling annoyed by Fuutaro's insult. "Hmph... I should not have come here if I knew you would mock my fashion taste," she added, showing a frown expression and turning her head away from him.
Ichika let out a weak laugh, trying to diffuse the tension. "There, there… Fuutaro-kun, that's definitely a rude thing to say to a girl, you know?" she said to the boy, raising her finger to him. "Anyway, let's go pick some clothes for you. Onee-san will give you some fashion advice if you get confused."
"Yeah, yeah…" Fuutaro sighed, as he continued to walk to the jacket and sweater section, feeling more at ease with Ichika's company.
As Fuutaro headed towards the jacket and sweater section, Itsuki turned to Raiha and beckoned her to come along. "Raiha-chan, would you like to come with me to pick some clothes for your big brother?" she asked with a gentle smile.
Raiha looked up at Itsuki, confusion writ large on her face. "But, what about Onii-chan?" she asked, pointing towards Fuutaro's receding form.
"Do not worry, Ichika will be accompanying him," Itsuki replied reassuringly. "I will show your big brother that my fashion sense is not as bad as he claimed. Can you help me pick something nice for him?"
Raiha's face lit up with excitement. "Sure, let's go, Itsuki-san!" she said as she went ahead to another men's clothing section.
Itsuki turned to Ichika and whispered, "Ichika, you go with him. I am still annoyed with his insult, and who knows, he might mock my fashion taste again if I pick a clothing that he does not like."
Ichika chuckled softly. "Ahaha… Then, make sure you and Raiha-chan pick reasonable clothing for him, okay?"
With Itsuki and Ichika now on board, the atmosphere of their shopping trip was more lively and merry than before. They split into two groups, with Itsuki and Raiha browsing the other sections of the men's clothing area, while Fuutaro and Ichika scoured the jacket and sweater section.
Fuutaro browsed through the jackets and sweaters with great scrutiny, studying each one carefully before moving on to the next. He was not used to wearing jackets, and the overwhelming number of options presented to him only added to his confusion. Despite the fact that Nino and Ichika had already bought him a decent jacket, he was still unsure of the current trends and found himself struggling to make a decision.
As Fuutaro stood in front of the rack, he furrowed his brows, tapping his chin with his right hand, contemplating each jacket on display. Suddenly, Ichika appeared from behind and startled him. "What's wrong, Fuutaro-kun?" she asked, amused by his posture. "Hehe… You look like a display mannequin with that pose."
"There are too many selections in this place, and it's hard for me to decide," he said, still in the same pose but with his eyes closed. "Hey Ichika, can you recommend a jacket or sweater for me?"
Ichika smiled, already having picked out the perfect clothing for him. She showed him a yellow zip-up hoodie with a sports company logo on the left side of the upper chest part. Fuutaro examined the hoodie and found that it was made of cotton, a comfortable fabric for clothing. It was a new type of clothing for him, as he had only ever worn his usual gray cardigan sweater and the jacket that Nino and Ichika had bought for him.
"I've never worn a hoodie before," Fuutaro muttered, feeling skeptical about buying it. "Is it comfortable to wear? To be honest, I prefer a sweater more than any other kind of jacket."
Ichika nodded, "Yeah. It's very comfortable, especially this one made of cotton." She then explained how good a hoodie was, "I always wear a hoodie when I go for a jog in the evening. It's comfortable for running, and it's a popular clothing item for youth like us. I'm sure it will look good on you, Fuutaro-kun," she said with a big smile.
Fuutaro took the hoodie from Ichika's hand and tried it on. The fabric was soft, and he could feel it against his skin. He zipped it up, and it gave him the same feeling of wearing a jacket or sweater, which he was already familiar with and did not mind. After a few seconds of admiring himself in the mirror and testing the hoodie's comfort, Fuutaro decided to take it. "Hmm… It's definitely comfortable, especially at night. Well, I guess I'll take it," he said before putting the hoodie in the shopping basket.
"Hehe… I knew you would like the hoodie," Ichika chuckled happily upon hearing that Fuutaro had decided to take the hoodie she had picked. "Onee-san's fashion advice never fails, right?" She flashed him a smile and a playful wink.
"Well… so far, your fashion advice has been good for my taste. Since you're an actress, I guess your fashion taste is definitely first-class and very flexible for any kind of situation," Fuutaro replied, returning her smile.
"Thank you! It's very rare to be praised by Fuutaro-kun," Ichika grinned widely, feeling happy to be praised by him. "Then, let's go look for more clothes!"
Fuutaro shook his head. "No, there's no need to," he said, picking up the shopping basket from the floor. "These two items should be good for me. Besides, the prices in this place are expensive, and I don't have enough money to buy any more clothes."
"Don't worry about it! If you're short on money, Ichika-nee-san will always be here to pay for you!" she offered playfully, still grinning at Fuutaro.
"Oi! How many times do I need to say it to you?" Fuutaro showed an annoyed expression at Ichika's suggestion to pay for him again. "You've already paid too much for me, so I will not accept any more help from you," he stated firmly and made his way to the cashier.
"I know, I know… I was just kidding…" Ichika said, her voice lacking enthusiasm. Then, a frown was visible on her face as she continued to talk, "Besides, I just want to help you, you know? You're no fun, Fuutaro-kun… Hmph…"
"*sigh* There's no need to worry about me. Don't you remember last month when you were about to pay for our food, but you were short of money?" Fuutaro recalled the incident at a restaurant last month when Ichika did not have enough money to pay for their meal, and he had to step in. "You should learn from that incident and save more money for your needs."
"Yeah, yeah…" Ichika answered, still frowning.
The two made their way to the cashier, with Ichika trailing behind Fuutaro as he carried his shopping basket. As they approached the counter, they unexpectedly bumped into Raiha and Itsuki, who were still browsing the men's clothing section.
"Ahh…! Onii-chan is here! Itsuki-san, show him the clothing that you picked for him," Raiha exclaimed excitedly.
"Hmm…? What's this about? Did you pick something for me?" Fuutaro asked curiously.
"Y-Yeah… I picked a polo shirt and jeans for you," Itsuki said as she displayed a red polo shirt and dark blue jeans. "I asked Raiha-chan for advice on what type of clothing you prefer. Based on her suggestions, I figured a polo shirt and jeans would be suitable for you."
Fuutaro examined the red polo shirt that Itsuki presented to him. It was a standard red polo shirt with a recognizable brand on the upper left chest area. The jeans, on the other hand, were from a well-known brand reputed for its durability. Nonetheless, being aware that this department store primarily sold branded and high-quality apparel, he concluded that the polo shirt and jeans must be superior in quality compared to those available in regular clothing stores.
Fuutaro took the polo shirt from Itsuki and noted from the washing tag that the fabric was 100 percent cotton, which was ideal for clothing. With regards to the jeans, he sensed that they were heavier than most of the jeans he owned at home, indicating that they were durable. However, when he glanced at the price tag, he was taken aback by how costly the polo shirt and jeans were, particularly given his financial circumstances.
"Sorry Itsuki, but I have to pass on taking these." Fuutaro gave the polo shirt and jeans back to her. "These two clothes are enough for me. Besides those are very expensive and I don't have enough money to pay for all of these."
"Do not worry about it, Uesugi-kun. I already paid for this shirt and jeans, so feel free to take it home with you," Itsuki responded back to him as she put the polo shirt and the jeans into the shopping basket that Fuutaro held.
"Huh? You already paid for it?" Fuutaro showed a dumbfounded expression from hearing Itsuki's word.
"Yeah, that's true, onii-chan!" Raiha said with a happy face. "Itsuki-san said that she bought these for you as a sign of gratitude for tutoring her and the others!"
"Y-Yeah…" Itsuki nodded with a slight flustered expression. "Since it is a gift from me, there is no need to pay it back to me."
Ichika, who was standing next to Fuutaro, nudged his shoulder teasingly. "Look Fuutaro-kun, even Itsuki-chan is starting to buy you stuff," she said with a grin. "I won't be surprised if the others also starting to buy you something, so don't complain about it, okay?"
"*sigh* What a pain… I guess you all truly quintuplets," Fuutaro shook his head and then showed a faint smile to the fifth sister. "Thank you, Itsuki. I guess I owe you one for next time."
"N-No… It is nothing, Uesugi-kun…" Itsuki replied, her face flushed slightly at Fuutaro's gratitude.
"By the way, onii-chan, can you try on the shirt and jeans now?" Raiha asked him with a pleading expression. "Itsuki-san wants to see you in these new clothes!" She turned to Itsuki, who was standing behind her.
"R-Raiha-chan!" Itsuki squealed in embarrassment, flustered by Raiha's words.
"Huh? You want me to try these on?" Fuutaro asked, unsure of her intentions.
"T-That is not it...! I-I was just joking around with Raiha-chan," Itsuki replied, her voice stuttering as she turned away from Fuutaro.
"Come on, Fuutaro-kun, try them on!" Ichika chimed in, still teasing him. "We're tired of seeing you in your school uniform all the time. Let's see how good you look in something different!"
"Alright, alright," Fuutaro sighed and headed to the fitting room.
It took about a minute for Fuutaro to change into the polo shirt and jeans. The polo shirt fit him well and felt comfortable against his skin, unlike most of his clothes back home. The cotton fabric felt soft and breathable, making it easy to move around in. The jeans, however, were a size bigger than his usual size, so he would need to wear a belt to keep them up. They felt heavier and stiffer than any other pants he had worn before, but he did not mind since they were durable and would last a long time, saving him money in the long run.
Looking at himself in the mirror, Fuutaro thought he looked pretty good in the clothes. He rarely wore anything besides his school uniform, work clothes, and his casual clothes since he spent most of his time at school, home, or the quintuplets' penthouse. There was not much need for fancy clothes in his daily life.
"This shirt is really comfortable…"
"And the jeans look pretty good on me too…"
"I'll definitely bring these with me on the school trip…"
Fuutaro emerged from the fitting room, revealing his new look to the three girls. Each of them had a distinct reaction to his new clothing. Raiha's face was filled with awe and she was clearly impressed by her brother's new outfit. Ichika nodded approvingly and smiled, admiring the sharp new threads. Meanwhile, Itsuki gasped in delight as she laid eyes on Fuutaro in the clothes that she had handpicked for him.
"So, how do I look? Do these clothes look good on me?" Fuutaro asked them, looking down at the polo shirt and jeans he was wearing.
"Onii-chan, you look amazing!" Raiha said, clearly impressed. "These clothes are so much better than anything you have in your closet."
"Yeah, I agree with Raiha-chan," Ichika chimed in, moving closer to Fuutaro. "Let me fix the collar. This collar style will look better on you!" She adjusted the collar and unbuttoned all the buttons. "Done! You definitely look even better now!"
Fuutaro looked at his reflection in the mirror, observing how the collar was now popped and all the buttons were undone. He could not help but feel that this style was a bit too bold for his taste. It was quite different from his usual approach to wearing polo shirts, and it gave off a rebellious vibe that he was not sure suited him. The popped collar kept brushing against his neck, which annoyed him, and he was not used to having so many buttons undone.
"Oi, Ichika, are you sure you're not messing with me?" Fuutaro asked, looking at her with an unimpressed face. "I feel like I look like some kind of delinquent with this style."
"It's fine, Fuutaro-kun! You look cool and stylish," Ichika replied, beaming at him. "Don't you know? This is a trendy style among high schoolers and young adults. Look, even the mannequin over there is wearing the same thing!" She gestured towards a nearby mannequin, sporting an identical outfit to Fuutaro's.
"Really? I'm pretty sure I'll get into trouble with the police or some street thugs if I wear this," Fuutaro said skeptically, still feeling uneasy about the unfamiliar style.
"Ichika-san is right, onii-chan. This is a popular style among young people. Even a lot of celebrities on TV are wearing this look," Raiha also added, nodding her head in agreement with Ichika.
"Hmm… I really don't like this style. It's too provocative for me." Fuutaro said, before swiftly popping the collar back down and buttoning up the shirt, leaving only the top button undone. He took a look at himself in the mirror again, feeling much more at ease with the traditional style.
"Dull and boring as always, huh?" Ichika quietly said, letting out a weak laugh at Fuutaro's lack of fashion sense. "Let's ask Itsuki-chan what she thinks. What did you think of the earlier style? Did it look good?" she asked Itsuki, who was still staring at Fuutaro in awe.
Itsuki got startled from Ichika's voice. "Ehh? Well, I guess it kind of looked good on him." She averted her attention from Fuutaro to her older sister. "Although, I personally prefer Uesugi-kun wearing the traditional style which looks neater on him."
"*sigh* I'll wear this polo shirt with my own style." Fuutaro unenthusiastically said as he walked back to the fitting room to change back. "I'll consider your style, Ichika, but for now, it's still not my thing." He entered the fitting room and shut the door.
Ichika could not help but chuckle at Fuutaro's comment. Even though she thought he looked good even in his usual traditional style, she preferred the trendier style she suggested earlier. She looked forward to teasing him again when he wore the polo shirt in the future.
Glancing at her fifth sister next to her, Ichika noticed a slight blush and flustered expression on Itsuki's face. It was clear that she had been captivated by Fuutaro's new outfit, the one she had picked out for him.
Ichika had noticed that Itsuki had become increasingly interested in Fuutaro since their school trip last year. Since then, she had grown closer to him, even staying at his house for a week after the fight with Nino. Recently, Ichika had noticed that Itsuki was becoming easily flustered and nervous around Fuutaro, especially when he tutored her personally or teased her. Knowing this, she decided to tease her younger sister about her apparent crush on their tutor.
"So... doesn't Fuutaro-kun look good in that outfit?" Ichika teased her younger sister. "The clothes you picked definitely suit him."
"Umm... yes, Uesugi-kun looks good in that outfit," Itsuki nodded, still flustered. "I am glad he liked the clothes I picked..."
"You should hang out with him more often, you know?" Ichika suggested. "That way, you can find out more about him, like his favorite food or his interests outside of studying..."
"With his lack of delicacy? No, thank you..." Itsuki responded, her flustered expression turning into a frown. "Besides, if someone from our school sees us together, who knows what kind of rumors will spread."
"Hehe... you're overthinking it, Itsuki-chan," Ichika chuckled at her younger sister's response. "Fuutaro-kun is still as insensitive as ever, but once you get to know him, he's actually a much better person than you think. Who knows, you might develop feelings for him after spending more time together." She gave Itsuki a teasing wink.
Itsuki let out a weak, sarcastic laugh after hearing her eldest sister's teasing. "Ahaha... like that's ever going to happen..."
Raiha's face lit up with excitement as she listened to Ichika and Itsuki's conversation. "Unn… That's right, Itsuki-san. Since you've already stayed at our house for a week, you should spend more time with onii-chan!" she said with eager, supporting Ichika's statement. "It's rare to see you and onii-chan hanging out together. It's always fun when we're all together, just like last year."
"I-Is that so…?" Itsuki said with a stuttered voice after hearing Raiha's statement, in which she partially agreed because she always cannot afford to turn down her request. "Well… If Raiha-chan is also coming along, I guess it's fine…"
"Yay!" Raiha exclaimed, her face lighting up with joy. "Then, let's go somewhere with onii-chan after the school trip, okay?"
Ichika chuckled at Raiha's enthusiasm and then turned to Itsuki. "See, even Raiha-chan wants you to hang out with him," she whispered with a teasing smile. "Don't worry about his attitude. I can assure you that Fuutaro-kun has become more refined than before."
"*sigh* Yeah, yeah…" Itsuki sighed, somehow feeling all pressured from the two girls' statement.
Fuutaro emerged from the fitting room donning his original clothes, which he had set aside earlier. He then placed the polo shirt and jeans he had tried on before into the shopping basket. "Let's head to the cashier and pay for the rest of the clothes," he announced to the three girls, then proceeded to walk towards the checkout counter.
Suddenly, Itsuki called out to him, causing him to halt in his tracks. "Umm, wait a minute, Uesugi-kun!" she yelled.
He turned around to face her. "What's wrong?" he asked.
"Can I borrow Raiha-chan for a while? I still want to do some clothes shopping for the school trip," Itsuki asked, hoping that Fuutaro would agree. "Is that okay?"
Fuutaro looked at Raiha, who was standing next to Ichika. "What do you say, Raiha? Do you want to go with Itsuki?" he asked her.
"Yeah! I don't mind at all," Raiha replied, grinning from ear to ear. She then took Itsuki's hand, ready to follow her. "Let's go, Itsuki-san! I'll help you pick out some clothes!"
"Thank you! Then let us start with the women's underwear section," Itsuki said, beaming at Raiha as they made their way towards the clothing section.
"Underwear, huh? That gives me a sense of déjà vu…" Fuutaro muttered to himself, shuddering at the memory of last year's shopping experience with Itsuki.
"Hmm? What's wrong, Fuutaro-kun?" Ichika asked, tilting her head curiously as she watched him shudder.
"No, it's nothing," he replied, trying to shake off the memory.
As Raiha and Itsuki browsed the other clothing areas, Fuutaro and Ichika headed to the cashier to pay for his clothes. After completing the transaction, Fuutaro turned to Ichika and asked, "So, what should we do now while waiting for them? Should we sit on that bench over there?" He pointed towards the bench situated outside the clothing area.
"Good idea. My legs are starting to get tired after all of that browsing," Ichika nodded, starting to head to the bench. "Let's go sit there, Fuutaro-kun."
"Yeah."
