Story Title: Shuchiin Academy: The Countdown Begins.

Complete Story Summary/Prologue:

Shuchiin Academy was a private educational institute. Earlier it was exclusively attended by kids belonging to the families of the rich elite and those who were nobles by birth, heirs and heiresses of old, respectable families, whose heritage and bloodlines could be traced back to the rich history of the country itself, kids with fathers and grandfathers and great grandfathers who had a hand in molding the country itself, people who held power and influence and wealth.

Once up a time, children of commoners had no place in the scared halls of Shuchiin Academy. But like Bob Dylan said – The times they are a-changin'

Shuchiin Academy was different than other educational institutes in the sense that it had all the right resources to educate students from middle school all the way to university. Admission partway through the school system was also possible, and as such it was not at all an odd occurrence to have a transfer student or two join the school in the middle of the calendar year. You just had to know the right people, but that's perhaps true about everything in life.

Once upon a time, it was seen as a symbol of status to attend Shuchiin Academy and in a sense that holds true even now. If you made it into Shuchiin, you were definitely doing okay in life and good things could be expected from you in the future. But this wasn't the 1850s when the academy was granted an imperial scroll. The glory days of the academy were definitely left behind in the past. That's what a lot of people thought. And maybe they were right. But at the end of the day it was all a matter of perspective. If you didn't go to Shuchiin Academy, it was alright as well. It wasn't the end of the world.

Shuchiin was established in the 1700s as a knee jerk reaction to the prevalent fears of the growing influence of those with Western education. The Edo Shogunate did a commendable job, but they would kill themselves in shame if they had to witness what had become of their precious institute. Needless to say, their attempts to keep Western elements at bay had backfired in a spectacular manner. Last year, the student council won a high voltage battle with the school administration and now students were allowed to pick from a wide range of school uniforms. It was not exactly how things were in high schools in America, but it was a definite move in that direction. They will get there in a decade or two.

The worst kept secret of the academy was its special quota system. Although, they no longer charged the exorbitant tuition fees they once did, money did change hands in the form of donations. The elite and nobles still wanted their kids to attend Shuchiin. It had become a matter of prestige, something to talk about in galas and parties, to gloat and boast, make themselves look better, appear superior in front of their peers. To them, the fact that they were made to pay more meant nothing. But that didn't mean, they didn't drill into the heads of their children that they were better, much more superior, to the other common riff-raffs who had gotten in, because of the special quota system or had to lower themselves further by applying for scholarship.

As such, an unspoken hierarchy was established – 'the pure' and 'the impure'. And you always knew who you were. But apart from these two, there existed those who didn't belong to either worlds. These were the students who didn't get in to Shuchiin because their dads were big shots. But they also didn't get in because they were specially gifted in certain fields, had scored a ridiculously high percentile in the entrance exam or were successful in their attempts to land a scholarship. No. These were the children of middle class people and these kids treated Shuchiin like your average, private educational institute and wished for nothing else but a normal, high school experience.

Hikigaya Hachiman belonged to this group, but sadly he had missed his first day of high school owing to a small accident which left him hospitalized for three weeks with a broken leg.

This is his story.

But, it's not just his story alone.

For example -

It's the story of Komi Shouko, the school Madonna with the communication disorder who dreams of making 100 friends.
