The State Verses Derek Morgan Ch 37
Over the next 18 days Derek slowly improved every day and the closer it got for the time of his trial to begin the faster he was healing until he was finally able to go back to jail but when he arrived he was sent directly into isolation. As Derek was led down the corridor by several guards, Hotch and Mia he felt a little nervous, what if the same thing that happened to him last time happened again this time, what if somebody bought off the guards again.
He was pulled from his thoughts as the door to his room opened, as he went to step inside Hotch said, "wait a minute "Morgan", Derek turned to look at him and he said, "the same thing that happened to you last time isn't going to happen this time". Derek listened as Hotch continued by saying, "the director was able to pull a few strings and get you two of bodyguards, they will be working 12 hours shifts each".
Derek said, "two guards, do I know them?", he smiled and said, "one of them you do", Derek turned and looked as a man walked through the door and stepped into the isolation wing, he grinned and said, "Anderson?", Anderson stepped closer and said, "it's good to see you again Derek, not under these circumstances though".
Mia said, "we wanted people to guard you that had been vetted by Hotch and by Dave and Anderson is one of them, he will be with you from 7:00 in the morning till 7:00 in the evening and then the other guard will be taking over". Derek nodded his head and said, "and what about the other guard, who is he?", Hotch said, "I don't think you know him personally but I think you've heard of him", Derek looked up as another man walked into the room.
Mia said, "Derek this is your other guard, his name is" and Derek finished by saying, "Luke Alvez", Hotch said, "that's right", Derek looked at Luke and said, "no, I've never met him but I've heard some amazing things about him". Mia said, "Luke was personally vetted by both Aaron and Dave so with Luke and Anderson we won't have to worry about your safety", Derek blew out a deep breath and said, "thank you both" as he looked at Anderson and Luke.
Both men smiled at him and said, "you're welcome", Hotch then looked at Derek and said, "there is something else that you need to know about Luke" ,Derek listened as Hotch said, "he's your temporary fill in while you're in here, but of course he won't be working in the unit unless he is truly needed because he will be with you 12 hours a day, starting, well starting today".
Derek nodded his head and held out his hand to shake hands with both Anderson and Luke, when he shook hands with Luke he said, "welcome to the BAU, I 've got to warn you we're a rowdy bunch", Luke laughed and and said, "it's all good, rowdy I can handle", everybody laughed and then Derek turned around and stepped into his isolation cell.
As the door closed he sighed contently knowing that at least for now he was safe, he knew that he didn't have to worry about getting jumped and almost killed again and that feeling of safety he owed to the people that always had his back, his family, his team, his lifesavers and he would forever be grateful to them for everything they'd done to help him and his baby girl.
Hotch looked at Anderson and said, "your shift starts now", he looked at Luke and said, "and yours at 7:00 this evening", Anderson nodded his head and took his post while Hotch looked at Luke and said, "I'll walk you out". Luke looked at Derek and said, "I'll see you this evening Derek, Derek said, "see you this evening" as he watched Hotch and Luke turn around and head back up the corridor being closely followed by the guards that had led him back to his cell a few minutes earlier.
Mia looked at Derek and said, "alright, now that you're in the safety of the isolation ward, let's get down to business", Derek looked at her as she said, "you're going to be one of the witnesses that I call, I haven't decided when I'll call you, it will either be first or last, more likely last to get the biggest impact", Derek nodded his head and said, "sounds good to me Mia".
As they sat talking Mia gave him a few of the questions she's most likely ask him on the stand, she then looked at him and said, "Derek when the prosecutor is cross examining you, don't give any more information than is asked of you". He said, "meaninggggg?", she said, "don't mention anything about the drug induced dreams you've been having, don't add anything that you're not asked about, we don't want to give them anything that they don't already know".
Derek nodded his head and said, "whatever you say Mia, whatever you say", Mia smiled and said, "alright, let's go over the witness list, I've added a few since the last time we went over it", Derek sat there listening as they went over the list again and by the time they had finished the witness list Hotch was back and then they did a mock first day just to get Derek up to speed on how things would probably go.
As he sat listening to Hotch and Mia he knew that his life was in their hands, not only them but 12 people would be deciding his fate, and that fate would either be setting him free and finding him not guilty or him being found guilty and spending the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole, he blew out a deep breath knowing that he was in for the fight of his life literally and he couldn't think of better people to have watching his back then the people that had always be protecting and helping him, his family.
