England, 1888. On the way back to grandma's house, young Scarlett meets a wolf. Things don't go nicely as she lies on the cold forest, hurt and bloody. The woodsman has terrible news about granny. Looking for the truth about that night, Scarlett goes on a journey to find the culprit with the help of an old friend in the city.

Her mother had told her, when she was still very young, that Red had been brought into her life through the force of magic. She had always thought it was her mother's way of worming away from the question 'how are children made', and left it at that – but now, standing face to face with a confused wolf, she's starting to doubt those thoughts.
