This was one of my entries in the 2021 A Picture is Work a Thousand Words Firework (mini) Edition Twilight Image Contest. The stories were limited to 500 words. This was my first attempt at writing fan fiction...can't mess up 500 words too badly, right?
Pairing: Alice/Jasper
Title: My Little Firework
"Look, Jazzy, aren't they beautiful?"
"Yes, darling, they are," I answered smiling. The fireworks are beautiful, of course, but not as beautiful as my Alice.
July 4th is my favorite night of the year. It's an anniversary of sorts for us. We always spend this night together watching the fireworks, away from the rest of the family, away from the chaotic crowds. And no matter how many years it's been, Alice is still as excited as that first time.
I found Alice in the spring of 1948. She saved me that day. As soon as I walked into the diner in Philadelphia, I knew something was different. I was overcome with feelings of happiness and I had to find the source. When I saw her, I felt as if my heart had stopped all over again. I knew I'd never want to be without her. But it took me a long time to feel worthy of her. Something changed on July 4th, 1948. She convinced me to go and watch the fireworks with her. She'd never had anyone to watch the fireworks with before and she was so excited, how could I say no. Although I was still unsure of my control around humans, Alice took me to a hill overlooking the river. It was difficult for people to get to, so it was just us that night. As I watched her staring up at the sky, I knew that I could no longer deny my feelings. I loved her completely. I still didn't know if I was worthy, I just knew that I had to tell her right then.
"I love you, Alice," I said.
She turned to look at me with a radiant smile on her face. Her eyes were brighter than I'd ever seen. I could feel all the love and happiness she was feeling.
"Did you know I was going to tell you that," I asked my little seer. She looked a little surprised, but then smiled and told me no, she hadn't seen it.
I was so glad that my first time saying it was also her first time hearing it.
My mind is brought back to the present by the frenzy of tonight's fireworks finale. My Alice is so happy and excited. I could stay like this forever.
"I love you so much, Jasper," she says.
"I love you more, my little firework," I say as I lean in to kiss her.
This is, and always will be, our special night.
