Chapter 1 - Tomo Hagakure: Origin
My family's Quirk is cursed.
…
…
"AHAHAHA! DON'T WORRY! IT'S TIME TO COME OUT AND PLAY!"
"Dad?! Where did you go?!"
"Oh no, Tomo, it's happening again! He's using Shadowstep!"
"Dad! Get a hold of yourself! Please, calm down and stop running so fast! We can't keep up with your Quirk!"
"DON'T WORRY! I WON'T HOLD YOU BACK!"
"Toru, it's not working. Let him go and stay close to me."
…
…
"LOOK OUT!"
…
…
"AHAHAHA!"
…
…
I learned just how cursed we were at the young age of eight when my father was killed by his own Quirk.
It was one of the biggest days of the year for any fifteen year old who wanted to be a hero. A day where middle schoolers from across the country all gathered in one location to prove that they had what it took to be the best of the best. It was the day of the UA entrance exam. Currently, only one thought occupied Tomo Hagakure's mind.
I wonder if I can take a nap during the exam.
"Toru, dear! Any later and you're gonna be late for the exam! Hurry up, we're waiting!" the voice of Tomo's mother, Fuyuko Hagakure, echoed throughout the apartment as she rapidly knocked on his sisters' door.
"Coming, Mom! Just need a few more minutes to make sure I'm perfect!" a girl's cheery voice replied from inside. A pair of giggles from behind the door followed her statement.
Fuyuko banged on the door this time, her voice getting a little louder and more urgent. "Miyu, don't make your big sister late for her big day! Hurry up, you two!" She then turned to Tomo with a roll of her eyes.
Tomo shrugged in response, a yawn escaping him as he patiently stood by the front door. There was no way he would intentionally get himself caught in the mess that was his sisters. More important matters occupied his mind than how late his twin was being or what scheme his younger sister was planning behind the closed door.
If I finish the written exam fast enough, I can definitely take a nice, long nap until time runs out. Then, maybe another during whatever the practical exam is? I hope it's something easy.
A few minutes later, Tomo's twin finally showed up with their younger sister trailing behind her. "Sorry, sorry! I couldn't decide on an outfit."
Tomo couldn't help but let out a sigh when Toru proudly raised her arms up and twirled to show off her outfit. Of all the reasons to keep us waiting. "What do you mean you couldn't decide on an outfit? We're supposed to wear our school uniforms. It's the same for both of us!"
Toru put her invisible hands on her hips, giving what Tomo assumed was a disappointed look. Miyu copied her sister's pose to also give Tomo a disappointed look. "Listen, Tomo, I wouldn't expect a boy to understand the intricacies of fashion! Let alone you and your stupid brain. Right, Miyu?"
"Yeah! Stupid boys!" the eight year old exclaimed with a toothy grin.
"Toru, no one's even gonna care about that kind of stuff," Tomo continued, ignoring the side comment she made.
Toru huffed. "Just because you don't care how you look doesn't mean no one will care. I want to make a good first impression!"
"Yeah! A good first impression!" Miyu echoed confidently as she did a twirl of her own.
Tomo rolled his eyes. "Whatever, let's just get this over with. We're gonna miss our train if we delay any longer."
"Oh shoot, you're right."
"WAIT!"
The twins looked down at their younger sister, who held her arms out expectantly with a giant grin on her face. "Can I give you both a good luck hug?"
"Of course you can, little angel! Come here!" Toru squealed in delight as she got down on her knees to be level with Miyu.
As Tomo watched them hug, Miyu suddenly looked up at him with a devious and expectant grin on her face. She didn't even have to say anything to him. Tomo could see the smugness within her eyes as she flaunted the power she held over him. His younger sister was ruthless when she wanted her hugs.
"Fine," he said with a sigh after a few moments of silent deliberation. It was mainly for show, since he didn't mind squeezing the life out of her, but he had a reputation to uphold. He dreaded the day Miyu realized he didn't mind giving her hugs. He squatted down to her level. "Come here."
"Yay! You're the best!" Miyu exclaimed as she ran from Toru to Tomo and tackled him with her hug. Then, like every request Miyu ever had for Tomo, there was an additional request that followed that always made Tomo regret being unable to deny his little sister. "Can we play Hero before you go?"
"No."
"Just for a little bit!"
"No, Miyu, we need to get going," he repeated in a stern voice. It's too much effort.
Miyu's expression turned sour at his denial and the edges of her lips went downward. A classic and deadly combination, but Tomo did his best to resist it.
She tried a different approach. "But, but, you have to! It's... for good luck!"
"Miyu, we don't have the time for this! We need to get going," he responded firmly, using the disguised excuse of responsibility to hide his laziness and lack of energy.
"Please! Only for a minute! That's not too long, right Toru?" She looked to Toru for back up.
"Tomo does need the practice as well…" Toru added while nodding.
"Mom, can you tell her no?" Tomo looked to his mother for help.
His question was met with an innocent grin from his mother. "Oh, I dunno, Tomo. Just a few extra minutes wouldn't hurt, right?"
"Weren't you just going on about how late we were gonna be?!"
Fuyuko looked at the ceiling, her lips curling even higher, "Maybe if you walk a bit faster…"
Tomo sighed and conceded to the combined might of the three girls. "You know the rules, right Miyu?"
"Of course!" Miyu squeaked as she jumped up and down in joy. Then, she got a serious look on her face. It was what they called her "Hero" face but it wasn't very intimidating when done by an eight year old.
Because Miyu's control over her Quirk wasn't good enough to quickly do what she wanted, Tomo held out his right hand and channeled his own Quirk to speed up the process. Darkness slowly materialized and crawled around his open hand until it was a small ball.
"Here, take it."
Miyu crunched her eyebrows in determination, her tongue sticking out as she concentrated on absorbing the Darkness with her right hand. Tomo felt himself lose control over the Darkness in his hand as his sister absorbed it. Then, she summoned a sword of Light in her left hand and looked at her older siblings in joy, proud of herself that she managed to do it on her first try. She then looked at Tomo in fury.
"Villain! You shall not escape me today!" she yelled out in her best hero impersonation. Then she charged at Tomo, wildly swinging her sword with all the skill of an untrained eight year old.
Tomo felt Toru sneaking up behind him and let her trip him as Miyu approached. She seized the opportunity, jumping onto his stomach in full force, briefly knocking the air out of him. She then wrapped her arms around him.
"I don't think heroes are supposed to hug the villains they capture," Tomo commented as he summoned a bit of Darkness to shield him from the sword approaching dangerously close to his face as Miyu hugged him.
"Oh… Well, I'll be the first to do that then!" Miyu replied confidently with a small grin. She got up off of him and held out a hand to try to lift him up. "I hope you learned from me. Good luck today."
"I was taking notes, don't worry," he replied with a grin as he took her hand to get up but instead pulled her into another hug on the floor.
"I got you now, hero! Evil shall win the day!" Tomo exclaimed in his best villain voice.
"Alright, fun's over you two," their mom yelled from the door. "You're really going to be late if you don't hurry up and run."
"Right! Let's go, Tomo. I don't want to be late because you took too long to get ready!" Toru said as she ran out the door, giving Tomo no time to respond as he chased after her.
The first half of the entrance exam, the written portion, went by rather uneventfully. The following portion was the real killer, if Toru's rumors were anything to believe. Tomo found himself seated next to Toru in the auditorium after leaving the exam room.
"How'd you do?" Toru whispered to him while they waited for their instructions. There was a quiet nervousness in the air around them as students waited for the instructions for the next exam.
"It was pretty easy," Tomo whispered back. I got to take a nap and everything. "You?"
Toru gave a nervous chuckle. "I didn't leave any question blank…"
"Good. I'm pretty sure you'll probably be mostly fine maybe…"
"Wow, really reassuring. Thanks…"
"Hello, examinee listeners!" a loud voice thundered across the auditorium, making several students jump in their seats.
Tomo winced. How can one man have so much energy?
After their instructor, Present Mic, gave a breakdown of how the practical portion of the exams were, the students were separated into seven groups. Tomo found himself separated from Toru and in Battle Center D. He looked around at his competition with a scowl. I wonder how many points will be the minimum to pass. Fighting robots sounds like more effort than it's worth.
"Okay, start!"
Suddenly, the space around Tomo became empty as the students rushed inside. Tomo slowly followed after them with a sigh. That guy has too much energy. These students too. Well, whatever, I still gotta pass so I should focus up.
He walked past the gate and into the arena and looked around.
A lone one-point robot appeared in front of him. Tomo eyed it with determination. It's not a human but a robot fight should satisfy this itch for battle I have right now.
With a deep breath, he channeled his Quirk and called forth the Darkness in the air. It responded to his command and formed a solid, black sword in his hand. Tomo took a quick test swing at the robot and was quickly disappointed at how easily it fell apart. Guess one-pointers are worth one point for a reason. That one was too weak. Need to find three-pointers. What's the fastest way to find one?
The road ahead of him was a mixture of broken robot parts and students roaming for more points.
The fastest way to get more points is to be the fastest person here.
He focused on the Darkness around his back. Two solid black wings sprouted from the top of his back, ripping small holes in his uniform in the process. He conveniently ignored the voice in his head that told him Mom would be very upset for ripping his clothes again. With a strong flap of the wings, he took off down the road towards the other end of the arena. A place he assumed most students weren't able to reach yet. To his surprise, a few of them had actually had the same idea as him and were slowly fighting the robots in the area. Whatever, there's more than enough for us to share.
After seven minutes of straight combat, Tomo got bored. And when he got bored, he got sleepy. This is not worth the effort. Even Miyu could knock down these robots with how brittle they are. Not even the three-pointers could withstand a swing from my blade. What a joke.
He made his way back towards the entrance gate. He found a comfortable wall to lean against and summoned his favorite creation: a Dark Blanket. He wrapped himself in the familiar warmth of Darkness and closed his eyes. A quick nap sounds wonderful.
"So, how did it go?" Fuyuko greeted the twins as they walked into the house late in the afternoon.
Toru spoke first as usual, unable to any longer contain the energy she had to ball up in her brother's company. "Mom, you wouldn't believe how amazing it was! It was like nothing I've ever seen before! There were sooooo many unique and interesting people there! For once, I wasn't the first person everyone looked at when they entered the room! There was a boy who was the size of an elephant! Would you believe it? He even had tusks to match the appearance!"
Tomo mentally tuned out the rest of his sister's rambling and made his way towards the living room couch to take a nap.
"And how about you, Tomo? How was the exam?" his mom asked before he could make it to the couch.
Tomo turned to her and shrugged. "Pretty boring."
"Tomo, you know that's not what I meant. I'm assuming you did well if you thought it was boring?"
"Yeah, I guess so."
"How many naps did you manage to sneak in?" Toru asked jokingly.
"Two," Tomo replied instantly. He grinned widely at the imagined shock on Toru's face.
"You're kidding! Right…?"
Tomo shook his head proudly. Ever since they were little, Tomo had always managed to sneak in naps during the oddest of times. Napping during a school entrance exam was at least in the top three most unusual places he had napped.
Toru continued, "How?! It was that easy for you?! The written part, I can see. You are the nerdier twin, after all. But the practical part was that easy too? How did you even know you had enough points to be able to nap?!"
Tomo shrugged. "I guessed the minimum number of points I needed to pass and found I had extra time remaining."
"And how many points is that?"
"I dunno, I wasn't keeping track."
Toru huffed in frustration. "And what about the zero pointer? Did you sleep through that too?!"
"If it was worth zero points then…
probably?" Tomo couldn't recall seeing any of those giant robots worth zero points. He figured he must have missed them or his venue just didn't have them. He didn't really care either way.
"Tomo, that sounds highly irresponsible and lazy. Even for you. You were willing to jeopardize your entire future because you couldn't find it in yourself to put in 100% effort for…what? Like 30 minutes?" Fuyuko interjected harshly.
"It was only 10 minutes. I'm sure I did fine," Tomo replied dismissively, turning to eye the couch. If there was such a thing as paradise on Earth, it would definitely look as warm and inviting as the living room couch did right now.
Miyu then ran out of her room at the sound of their chatter. "Did it work?! My advice?"
"Of course," both twins replied at the same time instantly, ignoring the fact that she didn't really give them any advice before leaving.
Miyu smirked triumphantly. "I knew it would. You're welcome!"
Tomo walked to his little sister and picked her up. She let out an adorable squeal as he threw her over his shoulder and onto his back for a piggyback ride. "Are you sure you aren't already a hero? I felt so confident today after all the practice I got from you."
"I am! I am!" Miyu yelled out in joy as Tomo ran with her around the living room. "No one will stand in our way with our combined Quirks! The world shall tremble before our overwhelming power!"
Tomo chuckled nervously at her sudden declaration and glanced at Toru. His twin was watching them with body language that said she found that as amusing and slightly nerve-wracking as he did. "I swear she gets these ideas from you, Toru. It's those old superhero movies you watch."
"Nuh uh!" Toru yelled back, aghast at the sudden accusation. "She gets it from you when you talk about how much you want to fight All Might! Right, Miyu?"
"Yeah! Stupid Tomo!" Miyu said cheerily as she playfully slammed her hands into his chest like he was a drum.
"Hey! Don't forget whose back you're on, young lady! And don't move so much! You'll fall off," Tomo said with fake hurt in his voice.
Miyu pointed towards Toru with a finger. "Attack, my minion! To victory!"
Tomo scoffed but listened anyway and ran at Toru. All four Hagakures broke out into joyful laughter as Tomo and Miyu chased Toru around the apartment.
One week later, two separate envelopes arrived at the Hagakure residence. One addressed to Tomo, one to Toru. They decided to open Toru's letter first in her room that she shared with Miyu. His poor twin had been a nervous wreck the entire past week.
"I AM… HERE AS A PROJECTION!" the voice of All Might yelled out at the two kids.
"Oh my god, it's All Might! Can you believe it, Tomo?!" Toru yelled out as she shook Tomo back and forth by the shoulder.
"Yeah, I guess he's pretty cool," Tomo replied casually. Oh my God it's All Might!
"Young Hagakure!" All Might paused and looked off to the side at someone off-camera. "What? There's two of them? Oh, of course, right. My apologies." Then, he looked back at them. "This message is for… ahem, Toru Hagakure. I am here to share with you the results of your UA entrance exam!"
Toru squealed and shook Tomo by the shoulder. "He said my name! He said my name! The number one hero knows my name! Can you believe it?!"
Tomo rolled his eyes. I hope he's there for my letter too.
"For the written exam, Young Hagakure! You passed with a score of 65%! Well done!"
Toru squealed again. And shook Tomo by the shoulder. Again.
"However!" All Might continued, "Even if you passed the written exam, you need to do well in the practical exam as well to make it into UA! And regarding the practical portion, you scored…10 villain points! Which… unfortunately isn't enough to pass the entire exam…"
Both siblings' hearts dropped.
"Toru… I'm so sorry," Tomo began saying as he put an arm around her shoulder.
Toru started sniffling. "I kinda had a feeling…"
"If…" All Might paused dramatically. "...that was all there was to it! Please watch this short clip compilation!"
Both siblings snapped back towards the projection, wide-eyed, as a small video started playing. In it, Toru was shown helping pick a boy up off the floor. Then, it cut to her talking to someone who looked to be on the verge of tears. And lastly, it cut to her talking to a girl with an elephant Quirk before quickly using a piece of junk on the floor to destroy a three-pointer.
"The practical was not only graded on villain points!"
Toru gasped.
"How can a hero course reject people who save others and do the right thing? People who go out of their way to help others? Even if the mission matters, it's the people's safety that always comes first! That is why, Young Hagakure, there is a hidden scoring system as well! Rescue points! And they're given by a panel of judges! It's the other basic ability we at UA look at! Toru Hagakure! 30 rescue points! For a total of…40 points! Congratulations, Young Hagakure! Welcome to UA!"
Toru screamed in joy and laughter, bouncing up and down in her chair. "I did it! I did it! Tomo, I did it!"
"Yeah, you did it. Congrats," Tomo replied with a smile. Her joy was contagious, even for him. She ran out into the living room to share the news.
Meanwhile, Tomo eyed his own letter, mentally preparing to open it. Toru zoomed back into his room after a few minutes, ready to watch her brother's results. Miyu followed Toru into the room and plopped herself on Toru's lap to watch.
"I AM… HERE AS A PROJECTION! All Might yelled out in the same exact manner as Toru's letter.
"Did he really record this with the same level of energy for every single applicant? Sounds exhausting," Tomo wondered aloud. Oh my God it's All Might! He looks so cool!
"It's All Might!" Miyu exclaimed with a gasp.
"Right?! Can you believe it?!" Toru replied, matching Miyu's energy and making Tomo regret having them present in the room during the video.
"Tomo Hagakure, I am here to share with you the results of your UA entrance exam!"
"Tomo, did you hear that?" Toru whispered at him with an audible grin. "He said your full name right away. That means he recorded mine first!"
"What?" Tomo asked in disbelief. The fact that his sister even noticed something as pointless as that blew his mind. "Who cares? He had to record one of ours first." He said my name!
"A good hero always notices the small details like that!" Toru replied smugly.
Tomo replied with a huff of disbelief.
The projection continued, "For the written exam, you performed exceptionally well! One of the top performers of all the applicants with a score of 92%! Congratulations!"
"Wow, did you hear that, Tomo? One of the top performers of all the applicants. You're soooo amazing…" Toru teased in a mocking, yet playful tone.
"Yeah, you are!" Miyu said seriously, not catching Toru's sarcasm.
"Thank you, Miyu." Tomo replied, opting to ignore Toru's taunt.
"And as for the practical portion…"
Tomo felt his heartbeat pickup in anticipation. All Might seemed to purposely add an excruciatingly long pause. Toru squeaked in anticipation next to him.
All Might looked towards someone off-camera again, his perpetual smile threatening to drop in confusion as he looked at his script. "Are you sure this is correct?" he whispered to the person. Then, he looked back at the camera again, clearing his throat. "For the practical portion, you scored 70 villain points! And if this clip is any indication…"
A still image was displayed on the screen. It showed Tomo sleeping cozily by the exam arena's entrance.
Tomo smirked as he admired the nap he took. Toru laughed and Miyu looked at the video confused.
"You did it all within the first seven minutes?! Young man, this…this is incredible! Amazing! Not only did you score the fourth highest of all examinees, but you did it using only seven of the ten minutes! It is with great pleasure that I welcome you, Young Hagakure, to UA. I expect great things out of you, young man."
A banshee screamed in Tomo's ear, making him wince at how loud the sound was. Toru got up from her chair and jumped up and down in excitement. Miyu, always looking for any excuse to jump in the house, copied her sister in similar levels of excitement.
"TOMO, YOU DID IT! YOU DID IT! YOU DID IT!" she screamed rapidly. Then, she happily added, "WE DID IT!"
"WE DID IT!" Miyu repeated joyfully.
Their mother burst into the room, obviously alerted by the girls' screams the results of Tomo's exam as well. The two were engulfed in hugs and kisses of congratulations. Tomo was able to withstand it for not even 5 seconds before he had to free himself and leave the room.
A curious thought crossed his mind as he thought about the video. All Might didn't mention anything about rescue points like in Toru's. Was it because I didn't get any or because I didn't need them since I passed with villain points alone? It has to be the former since I don't remember helping anyone… Whatever. Rescue points sounds like a lot of work.
A/N: Thanks for reading. Any thoughts, comments, or feedback are appreciated. A lot of this story is already written/planned out but any feedback is appreciated. Just some extra information for anyone wondering: this is (hopefully) not a story of an overpowered OC breezing through the story's problems; Tomo has his own issues and problems that hopefully help make the story interesting. The plot will mostly follow canon but Tomo's presence in canon will have some significant impacts on the storyline.
