The revving of the motorcycle was all Danny could hear as he tailed Johnny 13 down a vacant street in the middle of the night. Right when he thought he was catching up, Johnny sicced his Shadow on him. It barreled into Danny, and with a yelp, he crashed into the ground and rolled to a stop.
"Guys, I can't escape his Shadow," he said into the Fenton Phones communicating with Sam, Tucker, and Jazz. "Can you guys try to get Johnny while I handle this dude?"
"On it," Tucker responded as the three gathered together to hatch a plan.
"Is he coming this way, Danny?" Sam asked.
"Pretty sure," he grunted out as he tried to hit Shadow with his ectoblasts.
"Then I have a plan. Tucker, you have the thermos?"
"Aye, aye, Captain," he said as he held it up. She only raised an eyebrow before rolling her eyes.
"Good." She aimed her wrist ray at a street lamp and fired at the bottom, causing it to fall into the street.
"We're supposed to be catching a ghost, not vandalizing property!" Jazz said as the ground rumbled on impact.
"Johnny will do worse if we don't stop him. When he gets closer we'll aim at the street lamp nearest to him. He'll be too busy avoiding that one that he won't pay attention to this one... hopefully," Sam added. "Let's hide in the alleyway so he doesn't see us. Come on!" They scurried their way into the closest gap between buildings as they listened for the revving of an engine to get closer. They peaked their heads out to see Johnny coming, and Jazz and Tucker aimed their wrist rays at the street light he was approaching. As it came down, Johnny steered all the way to the left, missing it by inches. The trio came out from the alley as Johnny turned his head back to look at them.
"You're gonna have to do better than-" His statement was cut short as he collided with the other street lamp and was launched off of his bike and skidded onto the street. Tucker quickly unscrewed the Fenton Thermos and sucked him into it, giving a satisfied smile as he closed the cap.
"You were saying?" He retorted.
"We got him. How are you doing up there, Danny?" Jazz asked, looking for her brother in the sky. Shadow dodged and deflected his every move before bolting in the opposite direction, causing Danny to fly after him.
"We're headed in your direction. Do me a favor and blast this thing out of the sky."
"Affirmative," Jazz responded, causing Sam to raise an eyebrow.
"Affirmative? What are we, in a Mission: Impossible movie?" She quipped.
"Well, kind of," Tucker said with a shrug.
"Coming in hot!" Danny yelled as he saw his team on the ground. They all aimed their wrist rays and fired at Shadow. It dodged almost every blast except for one and shrieked in pain. Danny used the opportunity to use his cryokinesis to freeze him while he was distracted, the dark blob turning into an icy chunk. As it started to plummet to the ground, Tucker opened the thermos.
"I got it!" He yelled as a blue flash hovered over the ghost before containing it inside. Danny floated to the ground and bent over, winded from the fight.
"Good teamwork," he said in between breaths. After a long exhale he straightened up and looked around. "Now let's get the hell out of here." Danny flew off once more to meet everyone back outside of his house. He landed in an alley nearby to transform back into human before walking back out onto the street. He waited there for the rest of the gang, and when they arrived, he took the thermos from Tucker. "Thanks, guys."
"No problem. We're exhausted, so we're going to go. We'll see you later, though," Tucker said before he and Sam turned to walk home. Danny and Jazz silently entered Fenton Works, relieved that their dad was a heavy sleeper and their mom wore earplugs to bed due to her husband's snoring. They went downstairs to the lab where they released the captured ghosts from the thermos into the ghost portal.
"Well, that was fun," Danny commented as he placed the thermos down on one of the tables.
"How can you even fight with that hair?" She asked as she placed a hand on his head to mess up his long, black locks. "When's the last time you got a haircut?"
"The last time you were here," he answered as he swatted her hand away.
"You haven't had a haircut since the summer? We have to change that. You can't fight like that." She pulled out a chair and pointed to it sternly. "Sit. I'll be back with the stuff." He obeyed her orders and waited for her to come back with haircutting scissors and a clipper. After shaving the back and sides of his hair to his desired length, she cut enough off in the front so it was no longer blocking his vision. All in all, it was the same style he had before, just a little shorter.
"Now you look presentable," she said, causing him to snort.
"Thanks." He turned invisible to get all the hair off of him, watching as it fell to the floor. Jazz quickly received a vacuum to clean it up, not wanting their parents to wake up to a mess in the morning. She followed Danny to his room where he looked at himself in his dresser mirror, nodding in approval. "Cool. Nice skills," he told her.
"Well, I have five years of practice," she responded with a smirk. "I'm sure Sam will like it. She can actually see your handsome face," she teased as she grabbed his face playfully. He swatted her hand away once again and gave her a disgusted look which she laughed at.
"Stop it," he groaned out, feeling the blush creeping into his cheeks.
"Why do you always get so embarrassed when I talk about her? Is something wrong?" He sighed and plopped down into his beanbag chair in the corner of his room. Jazz followed pursuit and sat at the edge of his bed facing him.
"That's the thing. Nothing is wrong. Everything is right." She was confused by the tone of his voice. Everything was going the way he wanted it to, but he still sounded concerned.
"Then what's the matter?" He exhaled and looked up at the ceiling for a moment as if debating on saying it out loud.
"I think I love her."
"Isn't that a good thing?"
"We've only been dating for two months. Shouldn't it take longer than that for me to feel this way?" Jazz chuckled softly at his reply.
"It's not weird. You guys were already close before. Your feelings started way before you were even dating." She suddenly turned stern and pointed at him almost menacingly. "She's a keeper, though. Don't mess this up." Her response caused him to scoff, yet there was a smile on his face.
"So you approve?"
"She's risking everything to not only ghost fight with you, but to be with you. She totally loves you too." He perked up at her observation, always trusting her opinion, for the most part, considering her psychology major.
"You think so?"
"Oh, yeah. Are you gonna tell her?" He huffed and crossed his arms over his chest.
"Hell no." She laughed at his responses but he only squinted his eyes at her. "How come you don't date?"
"Please. I'm far too busy focusing on my studies."
"It's because no one in their right mind would date you," he mumbled, almost to himself, but Jazz heard and narrowed her eyes at him before suddenly getting up and running towards him. He shot up and started to run away, bouncing back and forth between the upstairs and downstairs until they managed to wake up their parents who had to break them apart. Even if it was almost four in the morning, their parents loved having their kids together; even if they were trying to kill each other half the time.
The next couple of weeks went by too fast for Danny. Before he knew it, Jazz returned to Yale to finish up the rest of the year. His sister was gone and so was his limited freedom. Even if her winter break seemed too short for his liking, he was happy they were able to spend it together.
Currently, he was in Sam's basement with her and Tucker after midnight, the only available hours he had to sneak out. He was playing air hockey against Tucker, but he was barely into the game and was absent-minded as his opponent was scoring left and right.
"Dude, are you good?" Tucker asked, shaking Danny out of his thoughts.
"He misses his sister," Sam replied in a teasing manner from across the room, eyes on the pinball game she was playing.
"And my daytime freedom," Danny added as he placed his puck down on the air hockey table before crossing his arms.
"Why don't you try to convince your parents to let you out with me again? It's been a while since you last tried," Tucker suggested, but Danny's hand moved to the back of his neck.
"Actually, I've been thinking of telling them everything. Stopping the treatments, ghost hunting... all of it." Hearing his response, Sam immediately abandoned her game and walked over to them.
"For real?" She asked, causing him to nod.
"Yeah, I just don't know when or how. I want it to be soon, but I don't know. Even just thinking about it gets me all flustered, but I know this is something I want."
"We're proud of you, dude," Tucker said, putting a hand on his shoulder, "but you know this is something you have to do on your own." Danny nodded in response.
"I know. I just figured I'd run it by you guys."
"Well, we stand behind you no matter what, but you already know that." Tucker held up the air hockey puck and smirked at his friend. "One more game?" They played another round together, this time with Danny actually focused before Tucker headed back to his house. Danny wanted to stay with Sam a little while longer, so they continued to play a little more. When it was almost three in the morning, she finally let out a yawn and collapsed into the couch.
"Man, I'm tired," she commented as Danny sat by her side. She curled her legs up onto the couch and rested her head on his shoulder. His heart skipped a beat but he laid his head softly on top of hers.
"I don't want to leave yet," he complained as she closed her eyes.
"I know, but you know you can't fall asleep here. Your parents would kill you if they woke up and you weren't there."
"I won't fall asleep."
"Mhmmm," she mumbled out, and he didn't have to look at her to know she was about to doze off. After a few moments of silence, he peered down at her.
"Sam?" He whispered, but it was clear she was already asleep. Gently, he started to shift, placing one hand under her legs and another under her back to carry her bridal style. He silently floated up to her room where he laid her down into her bed and pulled the covers up and over her. Leaning over, he softly gave her a kiss on the forehead before brushing the hair out of her face. As he started to walk away, his ghost sense went off. He mentally groaned to himself and transformed before leaping out of her window, floating in midair as he scanned the sky. To his far right, there was what looked like a ghostly, green octopus with red eyes.
"Well, at least this should be easy," he said to himself. Turning invisible, he took off after the abomination and materialized when he was close enough to punch it square in the face. The octopus used its limbs to snatch Danny, but he only fazed through them. He grabbed one of the tails and flew toward the ground, slamming it into the concrete below them. It made a strange splatting noise upon impact, yet still managed to fly away.
"Come on! Can't this be easy for once? I'm tired," Danny complained as he flew after it once again. Getting annoyed at the chase, he started to throw ectoblasts to try to knock it out of the sky. Seeing that it was managing to dodge those attacks, Danny switched to his cryokinesis. The octopus suddenly stopped and gaped at something behind Danny, but he only used that to his advantage to finally freeze the damn thing. It fell to the ground and shattered to a hundred pieces, and Danny sighed in relief. He was suddenly aware of a low humming noise in the distance, too occupied with the ghost to hear it earlier. When he turned around, he saw why the ghost had been distracted.
