This would have been one of my entries for the A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words "Back to School" Flash Fiction 250-word challenge if I could have gotten it done in time. Unfortunately, RL got a bit hectic and I couldn't meet the deadline. Even so, I decided to post my two (non) entries here. This is entry 2 of 2.

"Morning, beautiful."

The sunrise is outshone by the sparkling eyes of the man lying beside her. She can't believe she picked up a stranger last night. Her nerves had been on edge, but he soothed her with just the hint of his smile.

Today she starts a new job in a new town, feeling relaxed and ready to take on her corner of the world thanks to him.

"Last night was fun," she coos.

"Not just fun, darling. Last night was amazing," he counters with a grin. "I know we agreed one night, no questions asked, but I'd really like to see you again. What do you think?"

She isn't looking for a relationship. Moving across the country for a new job is hard enough. But he calms her and makes her feel at home already.

Her answering smile tells him everything he wants to hear, and he hands her his phone.

"Put your number in my phone, and I'll call you later today. I gotta get home and get ready for work. Back to school and all that."

She can feel a small knot forming in her stomach. "Do you work at the high school?"

"No, I'm a history professor at the college. We have a new Dean starting today. A Professor Brandon, if I remember correctly. I want to make a good impression."

She types in her details, returns his phone, and watches as he reads the name she entered: Mary Alice Brandon.

"I'd say you already did."
