Chapter 6-The prison
Shane's P.O.V
Shane walked the perimeter of the cars as Carol and Noah were making dinner. He looks at Rick as he walks up to him. "If Lori saw us right now, she would tell us we need to shave," Rick says as he runs his hand through his beard. Shane chuckles and nods.
"I like it this way, and so does Octavia," Shane tells him as he looks at Beth and Judith. "She loves her."
"After Lori, I wasn't able to take care of her. Daryl and Maggie got the formula, and Beth took care of her. She may not be Judith's mother, but she's the closest thing she has to one," Rick says. Shane nods as he looks at the woods. "After it happened, I would daydream about ways I could see you again, ways you could be alive. I never thought I'd see you again. Definitely didn't think you'd be married," Rick says, and Shane chuckles. Shane smiles as he looks at Octavia, who is sitting against Clarke with Blake laying her head on her mother's lap.
"Being with her it made me realize how wrong I was. I wasn't in love with Lori. I was obsessed with her. What I have with her is love. I love her with everything I am, Rick. Blake, too," Shane tells him.
"I'm happy for you. So you could stay being stabbed; worked out for the best," Rick says, and Shane nods.
"It did," Shane says. "You should hate me, man."
"I don't. I never did," Rick tells you.
"The night it happened, I ended up at that house that Daryl thought Sophia was," Shane pauses. "You ever find her?"
"No," Rick answers, and Shane nods.
"Anyways, I saw people, Otis and Lori, both telling me that I should be dead, put a bullet through my head. I was going do it, and then I saw you, and you told me to fight, and I've been fighting since."
"Hopefully, one day, we won't have to fight anymore," Rick says, and Shane nods as they walk over to the fire.
Beth's P.O.V
The sun was in the sky as the group stopped the cars in front of the prison. "Holy mother of hell," Abraham says as he climbs out of the bus. "Never saw the damage."
"It was a hell of a fight," Rick says as Beth gets out of the car and sees her father's body.
"Daddy," Beth says as she walks up to the body and head and falls to her knees. Maggie sits down beside her.
"Noah, stay down here with 'em," Daryl tells Noah, who nods. "We'll clear the walkers and start digging," Daryl tells Beth and Maggie, who nodded.
Tara's P.O.V
Tara stabbed a walker in the head. "Tara," Glenn says as he points at a walker. Tara looked at the walker and covered her mouth.
"Who is that?" Abraham asks.
"My sister," Tara says.
"Keep her covered," Rick says. "Glenn."
"I got it," Glenn says as he follows Tara toward her walker. Tara looks down at her sister, who is on the ground trying to grab her. Her left leg was missing, and there were bites everywhere. Tara bends down.
"I'm so sorry this happened to you," Tara says. "I hope you're with Megan now," She says. "I love you," She says as tears slide down her face. She stabs her sister in the back of the head as Glenn lays his hand on her shoulder.
"We'll dig another grave for her," Glenn tells her.
"Megan, too. She's down by the fence," Tara says, and Glenn nods.
"Yeah," Glenn says. "Let's finish clearing this place."
Shane's P.O.V
Shane follows Carl as they move through C-block. "Clear," Abraham says. "How long are we gonna be here, Rick?"
"Two-three days. It's gonna take a little bit to get all the supplies, and we need to see what cars we can take," Rick says. "So, pick a cell," Rick says, and Abraham nods. "Daryl, you wanna go dig the graves?"
"Yeah, Glenn, Oliver, Theo, and Tyreese, with me," Daryl says as he leaves, and they follow. Shane looks at Carl as he goes into his cell and looks at a picture of him, Carl, and Lori.
'I remember when that was taken," Shane says with a smirk, making Carl look at him.
"Her grave is down there if you wanna say goodbye," Carl tells Shane, who nods as he follows Octavia up the stairs.
Clarke's P.O.V
Clarke walks outside and sees Eugene staring at the field. "Something on your mind, Eugene. Nervous?" Clarke asks as she stands by the man. "You're able to save the world."
"This group is strong," Eugene says. "I don't want anybody else dying to get me to Washington."
"It will be worth it, Eugene. The walkers will be gone. It's worth it in all of our eyes," Clarke says as he stares at the field, and her eyes widen. "You're lying."
Eugene looks at her and gives a slow nod. "I am," Eugene says. "A lot of people have died to get me here, and after Bob, I can't keep it up."
"Why haven't you told us yet?" Clarke growls.
"Abraham. He'll kill me."
"No, he won't. You are going to tell everybody. You're a piece of work, Eugene. You may not have killed anybody, but everybody who died getting you here. Their blood is on your hands," Clarke growls. "I'm getting them down there, and if you don't tell the truth. I'm doing it."
Eugene nods as he heads back to the prison.
Abraham's P.O.V
Everybody stood in the eating area. "What's going on, Eugene?" Rosita asks. "You said you had something to tell us."
Eugene stayed silent for a moment before he spoke. "I'm not a scientist," Eugene says. "I lied about all of it to save my own hide. I don't know the cure."
"You are a scientist. I've seen you do things," Rosita says.
"I just know things," Eugene says. "I know I am smarter than most people. I know I am a very good liar."
"People died trying to get you here," Rosita says.
"I am aware of that. Stephanie, Warren, Pam, Rex, Roger, Josiah, Dirk, Josephine, and Bob," Eugene says. "You see, I lost my nerve as we grew closer, for I am a coward... and the reality of getting to our destination and disclosing the truth of the matter became some truly frightening shit. But after Bob, I couldn't do it anymore. Clarke figured it out. I didn't want to put anybody else in danger on a fool's mission," Eugene says as the group goes silent, staring at him. He looks at Abraham. "I am sorry for the people who lost their lives, but not for the lie. It saved your life. I am still smarter than you, and you may want to-" Eugene is cut off by Abraham punching him in the face.
"Abraham!" Rosita shouts as she jumps on him. He throws her backward, and she goes over one of the tables as he punches Eugene again, sending the man onto the table and then to the ground. Abraham goes to hit him again but is tackled into a table by Shane. Abraham pushes Shane off as Daryl, Glenn, Rick, and Tyreese grab him, and Shane pushes him in the face, knocking the large man out.
"Get him to a cell," Rick tells them. Tyreese nods as he Glenn and Oliver help him drag Abraham to a cell.
Daryl's P.O.V
"Eugene," Rosita says as she bends down beside the man. "Jesus," She says.
"Get him on a bed," Octavia says. "Help me," Shane, Rick, Daryl, and Theo help Octavia lift Eugene and take him into a cell. They lay him on the bed.
"What now?" Shane asks.
"You have an infirmary here?" Octavia asks Rick, who nods. "I'm gonna need an I.V. stand, stitches, and some bandages."
"Carl," Rick says. "Take Clarke, Tara, and Sasha. Get what Octavia needs."
"What about Abraham?" Daryl asks.
"I got some handcuffs in my cell," Rick says. "We'll handcuff him to the bed and talk with him when he wakes up."
Daryl nods as Rick leaves. "You a nurse?"
"Yeah, I was only on the job for three months," Octavia tells Daryl, who nods. "You guys can't help me here. Go dig the graves."
Shane's P.O.V
Shane was looking through the guns when Blake came up behind him. "What are you doing?" Blake asks him.
"Trying to find my gun," Shane says with a smile.
"How do you know it's yours?" Blake asks as Shane pulls a shotgun out.
"Cause I know the serial number," Shane says as he bends down and shows it to her. "I also craved my initials into the stock," Shane says as he shows it to her. "This gun was given to me on my first day as a cop. I've had it since," Shane says.
"You lost it after the farm?" Blake asks Shane, who nods.
"Come on, it's time for the funeral."
Beth's P.O.V
The group stood around the graves of Hershel, Lily, and Megan. "Would anybody like to say anything?" Gabriel asks as he looks at Tara, who shakes her head.
"The day I met Hershel was the day I almost lost my son," Rick says. "I would have lost him if it wasn't for Hershel. We were strangers to him. He didn't have to help us, but he did because he was a good man, the best man I've ever met. Hershel was there for each one of us at some time or another. He kept us human and stopped us from letting our inner demons take over. He helped us keep our humanity. Hershel always told us that we all had jobs to do, and even now, that is true. Hershel wanted us to live, wanted his daughters to live, so that's what we're gonna do too. We're gonna find somewhere and live. That's how we honor Hershel," Rick says.
The group stayed there for a couple more minutes. Beth and Maggie were the last two people there. "He would be proud of us."
"He would be," Beth says as she looks at her sister.
"Bethy, are you okay?" Maggie asks her sister. "You're different."
"I've been through a lot, Maggie," Beth says. "I don't want to talk about it, what happened in that hospital. The people I had to kill."
Maggie nods as she grabs Beth's hand.
Rick's P.O.V
Rick, Shane, Glenn, and Daryl walk into the cell Abraham was in and looked at the large man who was staring at the ceiling. "Is he alive?" Abraham asks.
"Yeah, he's alive. Octavia is taking care of him. She thinks he'll pull through," Shane says.
"I didn't want to kill him," Abraham says. "I just saw red. Is anybody else hurt?"
"Rosita's hand is sprained. But she'll be fine. You'll be staying in this cell tonight to calm down. Tomorrow, we'll let you out," Rick tells Abraham, who nods. "If I uncuff you. You gonna do anything?"
"I'll stay here," Abraham tells Rick, who nods as he unlocks the cuff.
Daryl's P.O.V
That night, Daryl walked up to Beth's cell and looked at her as she wrote in her journal. "This feels familiar," Daryl says, making Beth look at him and smile.
"I found it when I came in. It was just lying on my bed," Beth says.
"You doing okay?" Daryl asks her.
"Yeah, I'm just glad he's at rest," Beth says. "I don't know if I believed Eugene, but it was nice to have hope that the world could return to normal."
"This is normal now," Daryl tells her. "We'll still build something. We'll make it better than it was here."
"Now you're the hopeful one."
"You rub off on people," Daryl says. "Goodnight."
"Goodnight," Beth says as Daryl walks away from the cell, and she continues to write.
Thanks for reading. In the next chapter, the group packs up the prison and prepares to leave. Rick decides to make another stop, and Shane says goodbye. As always, suggestions, ideas, and feedback are welcomed. Until next time.
